Please be serious about this, thank you.

But what is absolutely never okay to joke about? Cancer and aids are things I will lose respect over a person for if they're ever joked about. Don't do that. u_u

Rape and the like just... I don't see where there can even be dark humor in it. I can (depending on the people I'm around) listen to jokes about almost anything, but this I can't do.

yeah this was the first example that came into my head
and pretty much the same response too

Like... there's being tasteless and/or 'dark' and then there's just being cruel.

Everything mentioned from the previous posts, as well as people's past, people's family, life (including other animal forms') and illness.

Very few types of jokes bother me. While there are a lot of jokes that I don't find funny(cancer, homophobic, etc.) they generally don't bother me. I just tend to ignore them. Rape jokes however, really really irk me. I cannot stand them and will call you out on them.

The word retard. Why? Because it's offensive to people with disabilities. I don't care how many times you tell me that it's not what you are referring to. It still hurts. That word is used a lot to bully people who are disabled such as those with autism or intellectual disabilities.

Absolutely nothing. You can't just ban a topic from being joked about because someone might be offended by it or might have personal issues with it. No matter what the subject is, a vulgar joke will always be vulgar and a witty joke will always be witty. The joke itself and its execution matters and any topic can be addressed in a humerous way by someone able to do so, whether you personally take an issue with it or not. At the end of the day, I believe that being offended is a choice, and your choosing to be offended by humour on a topic which you have an issue with shouldn't impede on everybody else's choice not to be. Remember also that a lot of people deal with personal and sensitive issues through humour, and just because it's something that someone else might have an issue with doesn't mean that they should be deprived of their own coping mechanism.

Ricky Gervais has my thoughts on the issue.

Same here. For me, any subject is OK as long as the joke is funny and there's no malicious intent.

    i mean
i agree? but there's finding humour (coping or otherwise) in dark/tragic things and then there's just being an edgy wankstain like ricky gervais
and i wish people would focus more on the former than giving popular support to the latter

So if Ricky Gervais is an "edgy wankstain", what was George Carlin? Someone who also made fun of pedophiles, rapists, drunks, religion, etc.

Honestly, I feel like this is spot on. Humor is meant to be a tool to cure our ills, salve our wounds, and give us confidence in a frightening world.

When done correctly, couldn't that be applied to any subject? Of course there are topics (some already mentioned) that I don't have confidence in my own discernment to be able to handle so well, but when I think about some of the great historic comedians, I wonder...

Honestly if done right I can humor in the most tasteless of subjects. For me I think sometimes you gotta find a way to laugh at terrible things. I like when someone can make me laugh about things I've dealt with that were hurtful to me. Just helps me to find the humor

Oh yeah I agree completely. For sure, people who just go out of their way to be edgy and just to get laughs out of the "shock factor" still fall into the camp of of vulgar for me. I didn't mean to say in my post that any joke goes regardless of what the topic is, if that's how I came off; while I think any topic can be joked about, I don't automatically extend that to every joke about every topic being okay. I get your concern though that this attitude does facilitate the prevelance of, in your words, edgy wankstains, although I kinda like to think that immaturity - something which everyone experiences in some way - plays a big part in this too and anyone who's got even a slight sense of humour eventually realises that being an edgy wankstain just isn't funny any more.

"Hey, look! Someone we know died! Let's go make a joke about it!"

    Those people. Leave Harambe alone.

    Also, these people:

    "Kill yourself."
    "Drink bleach."
"I hope you die of cancer."

I seriously can't tell if they're actually joking about that. IT'S TIME TO STOP.

This is...more harassment than it is joking, I'd think.
But more or less, I agree.
