My standby delivery order is: pepperoni, green olives, and mushrooms. Tomato sauce and mozzarella too of course. Oh, or sometimes quattro stagioni. Which is a little different everywhere, but roughly: tomato sauce, mozzarella, artichokes, mushrooms, prosciutto, and black olives. Both pizzas have a pretty balanced flavour palette, you get a bit of everything.
If I'm out somewhere I tend to go for:
- Something loaded with mushrooms. A good one I had recently had buffalo mozzarella, gorgonzola, roasted garlic, rosemary, thyme, pecorino, and a heck of a lot of cremini mushrooms
- Pizza bianca of some kind. Simple. Like ricotta, mozzarella, and garlic.
- Something with pesto. I ordered pesto, goat cheese, grilled chicken, grilled eggplant, and sundried tomatoes from a local place a lot
There's a trend I like now, where there are officially certified neapolitan pizza places. There's a couple downtown here. They offer what's known as VPN pizzas. Naples, Italy certifies these pizza providers based on ingredient quality, water, using only approved equipment, pizza-making methods, oven temperature, baking time, shape and size standards, etc. The country of Italy gaurantees you that you're eating something authentic XD It's kinda cool
Italian stuff aside, one of the more interesting (and tasty) pizzas I've had was a pumpking pizza. Goat cheese, caramelized onions, squash (might have been actual pumpkin? Don't remember), herbs, and pumpkin seeds. Served with some hot apple cider. :B
