Witching Week Hexipelago (Fast/Competitive Archipelago) [Signups open until COP Oct 27th]

Hexipelago

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Fillet of an Archipelago,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of Master Sword and toe of Thunder Badge,
Wool of Diamond Pickaxe and tongue of Magicant Bat…
Adder's Blue-Eyes White Dragon and blind-worm's Lantern,
Lizard's Kokiri's Emerald and howlet's Suspended Swinging Coaster...
For an Archipelago of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and caldron bubble.
Cool it with a baboon's Go Mode,
Then the Archipelago is complete and good.

Hello and welcome to another one of our Archipelago events! We've been running a few casual/slower ones recently, so I decided to put together a faster/competitive Archipelago for those interested! Feel free to join, if you think you can dispel the foul concoction that the witches have been brewing...

What is Archipelago?

Archipelago is essentially a "multi-game randomiser". This means taking multiple games and randomising them altogether, resulting in your items potentially being in someone else's game! To provide an example:

In a normal randomiser of say Pokémon Emerald, you would expect your HM03 to perhaps be obtained after defeating the first Gym rather than in its normal location (given to you by Wally's father in Petalburg City). However, in Archipelago it might be that actually your HM03 is obtained when another player defeats Queen Gohma in their Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. This also can apply to you i.e. instead of the OoT player getting their Ocarina of Time from a random place in their game it is actually obtained when you defeat Wattson in Mauville City.

Otherwise the end goal is the same - complete your games/goals, just in this case with the assistance of your fellow players!

Or... potentially hinder the progress of your "fellow" players... who knows...

Event details

The aim of this Archipelago is something to be a bit more fast-paced, kinda matching the same energy as the one James hosted for the Get-Together. As a result we'll be looking to start either as soon as I have all the YAML files from everyone on Sunday 27th October, or at the very latest first thing Monday 28th October. Please get your YAML files to me by then, otherwise you will not be able to take part. I will provide more information on how to put together YAML files later on in this post. We will then aim to finish in a week, so looking at around 3rd/4th November, depending on timezones.

I will be running a test server probably the evening of Friday 25th October or early Saturday, so any new players or people with new games that want to test it make sure to get YAMLs to me by then!

This a competitive event where you will be split into two teams, trying to beat the other in a race to complete all games the fastest! To help you along the way, some wicked hex maniacs have opened up a little shop... you see they're trying to collect Spiritomb Fragments to reassemble the spooky Pokémon, but they're scattered throughout your games! You can trade these in for things to aid your team, or hinder the other team! Stocks are limited however! Details are below.
  1. For 3 Fragments, you can earn a free hint. There are 5 of these in total for each team.
  2. For 5 Fragments, you can remove a free hint from the other team. There are 2 of these in total for each team.
  3. For 3 Fragments, you can lock a currently connected player on the other team from playing for an hour. There are 2 of these in total for each team.
  4. For 5 Fragments, you can release an item from a game. There are 1 of these per player per game for each team.*
  5. For 5 Fragments, you can lock a currently connected player on the other team from playing for three hours. There are 2 of these in total for each team.
*there will be limitations on this. you will not be able to ask for an item which will immediately put you into Go Mode (for example, the Writ of Transit in Final Fantasy 12 will allow you to go straight to the final boss of the game) if applicable. This is designed more to introduce some sequence breaking, or maybe unlock something stuck behind a huge chain of items etc.

As a small thank you for playing, you'll also have Pokémon Slates distributed throughout your multiworlds. Trading one of these in will allow you either a Ghost/Dark/Poison Type VPP Pokémon of your choosing (based on VPP rulings), or a custom role + role icon on our Discord server! There are twice the number of Slates as people in a team to increase chances, and if someone finds more than one then they can give the extras to anyone else!

Any of these items that are released after someone finishes a game do NOT count!

What games can I play?

There are two lists of games you can use:
  • The Supported Games list. This is a list of all games that have been tested enough to fully work on Archipelago. These will also have the easiest YAML setup process.
  • The Beta Games list. This is a list of EVERY game currently completed/being worked on for Archipelago. Most of these will have a different YAML process and generally SHOULD work on Archipelago (I have yet to come across an issue with any I have used).
I will also advise that some games, especially the older ones, WILL require a ROM or equivalent to use.

How to set up YAML files

NB: this assumed you have already downloaded the latest version of the Archipelago program itself, which can be found here.

YAML files are basically config files which tells the server how to randomise your game. There are two methods to doing this.

Method 1

If you have picked a game from the Supported Games list, then the process is very straightforward. All you need to do is select the Options Page option (pictured below)

This will then bring you to a page that will let you customise what features you want randomised (image below). Make sure to fill in a player name and I would recommend all new players leave the progression balancing as it is.

Once done, hit "Export Options" at the bottom and your YAML will then be downloaded. That is the file you will need to send myself. All done!

Method 2

If you are using one of the beta etc. games, then you will need to generate the YAML manually. To do this, you will need an APWORLD file. Click the game in the top list and it will take you to something that should list the APworld (and potentially other things) link. Click that (image below) to go to the Github page and then click on the LATEST apworld file (it should end in .apworld) to download it.

Once that is done, you will need to place it into the worlds folder of your Archipelago install (located in Archipelago\lib\worlds). Once that is done, open your Archipelago program and select the Install APWorld option first, selecting the .apworld file you've just downloaded. Then select Generate Template Options. This then opens a folder with ALL of the YAMLs. Open the one for your game and start editing! Once done, make sure to save it somewhere and then send that file to me.

If there are any questions with any of this, then please shoot me a message right away!

Here's my two YAMLs, I'm playing Sonic Adventure 2 like in the other Archipelago, and a Starcraft 2 YAML cut down to just the 25 missions in Wings of Liberty.

Although I'm playing Grid in SC2, I'd like my actual goal to be to complete all 25 missions, so if you could disable automatic !release, that would work well. That being said, with the campaign being shorter and the last mission being All In, it's likely to be one of my last levels anyway.

Just establishing interest. Will edit later with yaml.

I want to switch to the photo goal, because help everyone is basically 100% and that's less fun in a race. (photo still relies on me getting 12 feathers from checks, but less of a rush for other key items besides shovel & fishing rod.)

EDIT:
YAML:
name: VendilyShortHike
game: A Short Hike
description: Generated by https://archipelago.gg/ for A Short Hike
A Short Hike:
  progression_balancing: '50'
  accessibility: items
  goal: photo
  filler_coin_amount: 21_coins
  random_walkie_talkie: 'true'
  golden_feather_progression: hard
  easier_races: 'true'
  golden_feathers: '20'
  silver_feathers: '2'
  buckets: '0'
  sticks: '8'
  toy_shovels: '5'
  coins_in_shops: 'false'
  cost_multiplier: '100'
  shop_check_logic: fishing_rod
  min_shop_check_logic: 100_coins
  start_inventory: {}
  start_inventory_from_pool: {}

Thanks both!

I will likely avoid doing this, as the aim will be to complete ASAP and I don't want the run being held up by completing missions you don't need to for the sake of a personal goal. If however it doesn't affect that in any way then be my guest! That said we MIGHT have some form of manual release anyway - I know the GT one did at the expense of not obtaining any custom items that get released as a result of doing so.

Also just a general bumping of the thread - I'll be setting up a test server now at for anyone that wants to check out their games etc!

I also have been kindly provided with the necessary stuff to get some custom things put in like the GT by James, so as long as numbers look good/everyone is happy we'll look to do something competitive!

@Vendily @Devalue @Explorer of Time just letting you know the test server is up! Link should be here https://archipelago.gg/room/oalmKjZ-T7OFaCN9iofX0A

Deva your file for Red is in there but if there's any problems let me know. Also any general issues shout either here on Discord but I will say Discord is generally quicker!

Anyone else that didn't make it in time for this - I'm happy to set up something to test if need, but otherwise YAMLs to me ASAP please!

Hexy Archipelago, huh? Is it too late to sign up? If not I can get a couple YAMLs to you sometime today.

Edit: Never mind it took like 20 minutes, here you are, made ones for Cave Story and Circle of the Moon, two games I think are spooky enough to fit the theme:

I have a minor edit for SA2's YAML, changing my goal to Chaos Emerald Hunt and forcing the Shovel Claws to generate in my own game, so I'm not stuck waiting on someone else for over half my checks if King Boom Boo generates as a level gate this time.

You're well on time friend!

Do you want to test these at all?

Thank you everyone else for testing! @Explorer of Time I'll make note of that and make sure to use the most recent one!

Do you want to test these at all?

I'd love to if possible! They're both alpha games I've never tried out before, so there might be a chance I could miss something or mess up somewhere trying to connect to a server.

Did my test on Setsuna's Archipelago room, since she may as well have some items received to ensure that it all works.
My game seems all good to me, it's the right goal, but I didn't end up finding enough feathers in the parts of the game accessible using only the items I found for myself to test the ending. I have no reason to believe it doesn't work though, given it's a supported game, and I know this goal works as a sub goal for Help Everyone.

Oh you're right I'm so sorry! I've attached the output file which should have that in it for you.

Thanks, it works great! Just gonna need a new one for the real thing.

Hello! Just letting people know signups are now closing, we've got I believe 11 players! I'll be setting up the worlds and stuff now, so will let you all know ASAP.

Because of the nature of this event, I will advise being at least able to respond on the Discord server, because it generally is quicker for people to respond in real time and stuff, as it will likely be quite a lot of checking and grabbing items and stuff going on!

I can access the Discord, but if anyone needs to contact me quickly, just a heads' up that it'll be faster to post here or PM me on the forum.
