Hmm, I'm not too sure about that. I wasn't too crazy when BW did that, but I wouldn't dislike it or anything. I just like when you can catch older Pokemon too.

Pokemon as a series would have ended with that generation. No more Pokemon. Least not Pokemon as we know it. You might eke out a Pokemon Plasma Version, but that would be the last game; and probably be a boring one.
