In Pokemon Yellow, you are forced to have Pikachu as your starter. Unfortunately, the first gym is all Rock/Ground types, and Electric doesn't effect ground.

I caught a Caterpie and trained it to a Butterfree. I also trained a Nidoran-M and taught it Double Kick. Nidoran-M was mostly backup.

Pretty sure Butterfree was also how I did it. Not a whole lot of choices to pick from for the first gym. Brock not actually having any Rock type attacks+Confusion being a special attack makes it an ok pick.

A combination of Butterfree's Confusion, Mankey's Low Kick, and Nidorina's Double Kick.

I did the Mankey from route 22 with low kick too! I remember being stumped and reading about that strat in some guide at the time. My little-kid brain wasn't smart enough to think of that on my own 😅

Little me tried to use Pikachu for tackle, because using thunderbolt was useless.

Growing up and returning to the game, I leveled up my Butterfree and Nidoran (female) so I have a type advantage.
