How often do you change your team?

Are you the type who tends to stick to your team as soon as you complete it, or do you sometimes swap things around?
I usually tend to swap out only one or two Pokemon, unless the challenge I'm playing either forbids it or mandates that I swap out more.

I like to pick out a final team of six before I start, but if I can't catch something until later in the game, I'll usually fill its slot with a temporary early-game and/or mid-game party member, until I reach the point where I can catch the planned permanent team member. Usually, since I like either monotype runs or other themed teams, the choices I have for team members are quite restricted. If the only available Pokemon that fit the theme aren't useful, or if they're close enough to the permanent team member that would replace them that I don't have to use them for any gym battles, I usually don't bother at all.

Has there ever been a time where you used multiple teams (swapping them out at certain points) throughout a mainline game story?
In my run of the GT 2023 Challenge, I had to use 29 different Pokemon, since my party, apart from Gardevoir, kept getting declared ineligible. It was fun but also kind of exhausting.

Rarely. Occasionally changes one in a first playthrough. Hates doing that, however. Either evolved into something dumb, cannot evolve, or was performing terribly. Tends to be when 2 out of 3 of those conditions have been met.

Usually plans challenge run teams to not need to switch out Pokemon (when not locked into a team). Runs into exceptions sometimes, such as the current challenge, due to availability. (Created a full team that shows up after Gym 2 or 3. Cannot afford to get stuck with the beginning options.) Potentially discovers some team weakness or shortcoming along the way too.

Used 25 Pokemon in the Proof of Affinity (Valentine's Day 2022) challenge. Briefly had 3 teams due to leveling way too quickly. (Had the EXP Charm from the DLC, plus Lucky Eggs.) Tried to maintain a healthy stable of Pokemon to make easy connections. Trained Pokemon waaaay quicker than the partner ever could on HeartGold, especially with PokeJobs. Had enough time to EV train everyone.

Starting in gen 6 because of the exp share I have began changing up my team a lot. For instance, in S/V because you can switch pokemon out of the box on the go I am usually switching up pokemon back and forth. That means that each time I go to the gym, fight the star battles, or the giant pokemon I usually have a different team comp each time. In gen 6 I had about 10 pokemon that I would shuffle through, and in gen 7 it was often around 12. Gen 9 I find myself shuffling through 30 different pokemon at a time. I honestly enjoy this type of playstyle a lot. Before I would strictly use 6 pokemon that I'd plan out and nothing else. I do not have a problem with playing that way either.

Once I complete my team, I don't change it up until post-game, but only to evolve certain Pokémon or to make room for eggs.

Not often once I get my squad of six assembled. I'll swap around a bit for the beginning portion of the game, but once I get my full party, I'll stick with them unless I need an HM user or to evolve something.

Depends on the game and circumstances.

Without the modern Exp. Share, there wasn't much of a choice. It was a pain for boxed Pokémon or Pokémon caught at low levels in the late game to catch up. The grinding wasn't worth the trouble, so basically just get a decent team and stick with it, no need to swap except for HM duties. In some cases, I would also use a couple early game Pokémon temporarily if most of the Pokémon I wanted for my team appeared late.

In the modern games, I typically end up using around 10-12 Pokémon, and swap them around because of level caps. Made an exception for the Indigo Disk DLC in the latest games, since it focusses entirely on double battles I picked three additional Pokémon to play around this format. I don't really like training and using too many Pokémon.

And I'm not a fan of building teams to counter specific trainers either. Some heavy difficulty rom hacks are designed around this concept but I prefer sticking to one team as much as possible and don't change unless it's really necessary. If my current team can legitimately achieve victory I don't care if there are other Fire types that could have done a much better job than my current Fire type in one particular battle or section of the game. I believe part of the fun in playing Pokémon is that you can't have the best counter for everything, so you have to work with what you have.

Usually once I settle on 6, I stick with them. I get too attached to them and don't want to switch anyone out. This bit me in the butt in Sun because I already had a full team before catching Solgaleo, much to the dismay of middle school me who wanted the cool box legendary on my team.

However, in my ongoing mono-Water run in Diamond, I'll definitely be switching out some teammates for Water-Ground types like Gastrodon for the Electric gym lol.
