If legendary Pokemon had genders?

I wish people would give reasons for their choices. Like why is Suicune female while the other two are not?

I'm glad legendaries are genderless though. It means there are less of them.
 
Yeah I agree. I think when they created Pokemon, they created the gender too

a lot of people seem to headcannon mew as a girl, i feel like the only one who sees it as more of a young playful boy haha! same with most of the other small legends/mythicals. looking at this list... I think most of them I headcannon as boys, except the few obvious female ones like virizion and xerneas.

Manaphy is definitely a girl for me
I remember that movie with May and Manaphy and I was like, "aw, they make a great mom/daughter combination" and later they would say "wow, so manaphy is the prince of the sea" and my mind will just pause and twirl for a second hahaha

In my personal opinion, it should work as follows:
1. The legends have canonical genders, or gender ratios.
2. They have a "legend status" marker in the code so the daycare is like "uuhhhh this is a myth I will not take it" and thus you cannot breed it. Aside from certain ones like Lugia and such which have been shown to be in quantities greater than one.

What a topic! I used to be a big believer in assigning genders to the Legendaries that don't have one, but nowadays I'm not so sure. I'll just jot down the ones I can still think of.

Considering how there are multiples of the Legendary birds (and Lugia in the anime), I honestly think those could be either gender like Heatran. Same for certain Mythicals like Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, Shaymin, Victini, Marshadow, Zeraora and Zarude - as well as Type: Null and Silvally as artificial creations, and the Ultra Beasts. Meloetta, Diancie and Magearna (at least in personality, because she's an automaton) are always female in my mind, and Mewtwo, Ho-oh, the Legendary Beasts, Rayquaza, the Swords of Justice, Manaphy, Darkrai, Hoopa and Volcanion are always male. The rest, I haven't thought of.

Now, there are also a few whom I think are truly genderless, or at least have a gender beyond our understanding. Those would be the Regis, Deoxys, Arceus, Kyurem, Necrozma, Meltan/Melmetal and Eternatus.
 
They're asexual due to game mechanics (and maybe lore?) but they can probs be gendered still. It's just that the game doesn't bother differing between sex and gender ^^ Generally I think one can think of the legendary pokémon in whatever way they want, it doesn't really matter. Zekrom might be a badass girl while Reshiram an elegant boi. Or vice versa.

Funny thing is that's probably more accurate to the design basis of the two than what the common perception is

In the Gen V games it's presented as truth/ideals since that's a lot easier to make work for a (Pokemon) narrative, but what the Tao trio is really based off of is yin and yang (in the Japanese versions, Zekrom and Reshiram's species names are the Black Yin Pokemon and the White Yang Pokemon). And while yin and yang represent a lot of things, as far as I know two of the things yin represents is femininity and the moon (which in at least two cultures has long been a feminine symbol). Yang represents masculinity and the sun (which in at least two cultures has long been a masculine symbol).

but like you said, we're talking about fictional creature pixels and it's not really a big deal what people view each one as, but it's a fun thing to bring up
