Okay this thread isn't about Charles, but it's about Triple and Rotation Battles. These were both introduced in this generation. A triple battle is what it sounds like -- three vs. three. Rotation is similar to a triple battle, in which three Pokemon are on screen, but only one is in the line of fire and can attack. You have to plan accordingly as to whether or not you want to rotate your Pokemon and have someone else make a move against your opponent. But keep in mind your opponent can rotate out as well!

So, did you enjoy these battle styles? Which of the two is your favorite? And of course, add more if you like. We could even discuss Charles. lol

Triple battles are alright, but I actually really enjoy rotation battles. I love the strategy that comes along with not only being able to "switch" and attack on the same turn, but also having Pokémon on the field even if they aren't battling. So you can keep stat changes and such even when that Pokémon isn't active! Really cool stuff.

I wish there were more instances of these battles in BW. It was one of their many version differences, with rotation battles being more common in Black and triples being more often in White. But there were so few overall that a lot of people forgot they were even a thing!

I think instead of having the Striaton Trio with a Type advantage over your starter battle you solo, they should have had all three challenge the player to either a triple battle in White or a rotation battle in Black. That would have been even more unique than the approach they took (which was already unique), and also established the new battle style(s) early on. And the elemental monkeys were basically the poster-children for triples in the BW pre-release period--they even all know Acrobatics, which was heavily emphasized for its ability to reach across the field in triples!

As for Charles, well, he says it a lot, so he must be a heartbreaker!

Okay but... can we still talk about Charles? I'm still really confused on why he exists and why he wasn't given more of a spotlight?

I really liked the idea of triple and rotation battles, I just wish they had more of an official place in the series instead of only appearing in optional battles and only like... twice. What stopped them from including them as maybe gym battles was the fact that they were so strict with following the old formula. With Sun & Moon moving away from typical 1v1 gym battles, we might get to see more of these matchups in the storyline!

tbh I agree about Charles like why don't we get to know more? How did he break someone's heart? What if it was actually his heart that was broken and he's just lying to cover up the pain? What if he invented these kinds of battles as a means of distraction? I NEED TO KNOW, CHARLES.

Oh absolutely, he's just lying. Our first clue is that he says he learned about these new battle styles to try to get the attention of a girl he liked. If he was such a heartbreaker, he wouldn't need to do that. Then there's also the fact of when you turn down his offer for a battle he admits that getting someone's attention is really hard to do.

Charles, the heartbreaker with a broken heart.

Unless Charles is just really a hardcore Biker thug that cuts the heart out of those that mosy on over to his turf...

I was really disappointed with Rotation Battles, actually. Not that they were bad, but because they weren't as prominent in the game as they should have been. I can only remember Charles himself featured in a Rotation Battle. I can only recall only ever once or twice being able to experience Rotation Battles outside of the Subway (Subway? Tower?) and it was a huge shame. I don't think they lasted long either, considering they were nowhere to be seen in Generation VI... Oops. My bad. I guess my memory isn't what it used to be. I forgot the Restaurants offered Rotation Courses.

His name... Charles... He met this girl, Cynthie or something a few years ago. They dyed, they were cool... but she had ambitions. She wanted to become part of the elite four one day. She wanted to be the greatest trainer ever. But Charles... he was cool just riding his bike. Travelling to Cycling Road, meeting fellow bikers. That was his destiny. He figured his girl wanted the same. She was a biker chick after all. He decided he'd get her a Gabite, and propose with that. She accepted the Gabite, and the proposal. But her heart longed for something more.

She secretly began making plans to join the e4. Charles began making plans to leave for Unova, to make a better life for them.

A few months later she broke it off. She didn't have the time... but she kept him in the back of the mind. She trained the Gabite - and it became her partner Garchomp.

Charles on the other hand... he proposed to every girl, only offering a Magikarp. If that was good enough to her, he was good enough to her. But they all said no, and wanted a better Pokémon before they could accept. Charles broke it off with every one. He became known as the Heartbreaker. Charles... the Heartbreaker.

A little girl he met on his travels with crazy hands and black hair told him about her favourite battle style. Charles, inspired by her ideas, decided to create his own battling style to win his love back..

When he found her again she was too busy with champion duties.

Years passed and Charles continued to wander Unova. His girl, they say, now visits Unova specifically to find Charles. To show him Garchomp.

    She hasn't found him yet.

    ....

Triple battles were cool. Rotational were boring tbh. Too much effort lost me lol

^take notes Game Freak, you now got a whole backstory for Charles already made for ya for when you do Gen 5 remakes
Better yet, have us play as Charles.

I never really got into rotation battles tbh - just didn't quite appeal to me for whatever reason. Maybe I should give it more of a chance if it sticks around in gen 7... Triples I do want to try out a bit more regardless, if only to use my Ludicolo army. >:]

I liked the concept of both Triple and Rotation and I wish they would have been used more. But. I came here for Charles. why would u make a thread and not want to talk abt charles he is the best character in the game t b h

@Nica best backstory 10/10 this is canon now

Rotation battles!!, triple battles were great too, but I had better time with rotation battles. Rotation battles were confusing, you had no idea which Pokemon was going to attack,. This was fun to do and i enjoyed more. I also felt they should've been addefd more in the game.

Ah yes Charles. A random character with no backstory other than apparently being a big deal in Driftveil who yapped a bit before a forced tutorial on Triple/Rotation Battles. If we ever get Gen 5 remakes can we please bin this guy.

Triple and Rotation Battles were a different take on battling but weren't really in the game enough to be memorable. Rotation had more potential but since hardly anyone uses them they are forgettable.

h o n e s t l y how dare you come in and diss charles like that!!! he is the love of my life

Charles is great and all, but I really don't like the triple OR rotational battles. They seem to take far too long and I feel like the battles become tedious when it comes down to constantly rotating between 3 Pokémon all the while the opponent is doing the same.

I hate triple battles, theyre weird and awkward and i never remember which Pokemon can hit what.

However ROTATION BATTLES ARE THE CRAP I LOVE THEM. I love the switching and the fighting and thethree Pokemon out ar once but still only one fighting at a time, it would be so cool if theyd add in more rotation battles to the games really.

Rotation battles were a ton of fun and it's a shame there weren't a few more of them. Even if making a good move could be pretty much guess work. Also definitely agreed that we could have heard a little more about Charles. He had character, somehow.

I quite enjoyed Triple Battles. I did wish they were included in the main story more though. Maybe extending them to Rival, Villain, and maybe even Elite Four battles. I'd have to agree that Rotation battles seem more of a PvP type thing since the AI seems to be pretty errr.... underwhelming.

    I want to discuss Charles.

Anyone find his character a bit disappointing? Like there could have been so much potential. I want to know his story but we get NOTHING. It bothers me that there is no depth to his character whatsoever. :')
I think he's great and memorable BECAUSE of that actually! Like he's an absolute mystery and the wild speculation that can come of that is fantastic~

Triple battles felt really gimmicky and I felt like they were just implemented because double battles exist and Game Freak wanted to experiment, that isn't a bad thing I just think they weren't really necessary.

Rotation Battles on the other hand were pretty cool, they added an interesting twist and some strategic element to the game. It was an entirely new concept and, for the most part, it was done pretty well be GF.
