I love how when I bring about pessimism I'm rebutted but when I'm optimistic about our world as it is all the nay-sayers pile in and tell me we live in a cave filled with rotting garbage. How perplexing it is!

In all honesty, there are powers above us (by above us I don't mean merely human) that have a level of luxury that makes us look like mushrooms in the dark being fed horse feces. The sorts of luxuries they have are along the lines of worry about hunger and thirst, dealing with the corruption of money, and even things such as work and learning. Materialistic things are so shallow and so… human.
 
I always stood for the pledge. I come from a military family, and a simple thing like standing for a few seconds to give thanks never seemed liked a hassle in my book. I guess it's just me.

Drone-striking, political correctness, suppression of rights to certain individuals (gays in particular), big corporation protection by government (which I consider cheating), overblown military budget, high incarceration rate, the War On Drugs. I could list other reasons, but I'm sure people could argue against these being reasons for not being proud of your country.

But I suppose if they aren't, then I guess my answer would then be, no I don't have a reason to not be proud of my country, but I also can't think of a good reason why I should be proud of it either.

I'm just not sold on patriotism and nationalism. To me it just seems like its a whole lot of posturing.

I agree with a lot of stuff you just wrote. You basically hit the nail on the head with a lot of these points.

I guess it really depends on how exactly we view saying the pledge of allegiance or the national anthem. Whenever I say it, I don't exactly think of it as "I love my country woo hoo!" but rather I say it as a thank you specifically to all of our troops out there. It might seem narrow minded, but that's my reason for saying it; while the motives for fighting overseas might not be true, they're putting their lives on the line and that's something braver than anything I could even fathom doing. That's also why I'll stand and salute my troops whenever there's an opportune moment.
 
I think it'd be a lot less mindless if we were praising and revering those who make an effort to better our world through selflessness rather than a group of people in uniform that go and shoot people who they don't even know because some old white dude in a suit told them to.

That sounds kind of unlikely.
 
Video game graphics nowadays have significantly improved over the years. Most of the look so realistic that you can't even tell if you're controlling real humans or computerized. Sooner or later we'll be able to see 3D gaming, or even virtual reality gaming a la Sword Art Online. xD

I'm still waiting on a game like Sword Art Online. 100 floors with their own unique worlds and unique bosses at the end and still playing like an RPG? That would be hella' fun.

Although hopefully we won't be trapped in the game and if we die we don't die in real life.... >_>".
 
Graphics can still get better. If the human eyes were considered cameras, they would have around 576 megapixels. As long as we can process that amount of data, graphics can still get better.

Interesting. If that's the case, what quality/size would you say we are currently at?

By that math, our eyes dimensions square would be 24,000 square pixels. My educated guess as to color depth would be around 32-bits per channel.
 
^ that made me laugh harder than it should. That's a lot of money that we all owe one another. Holy smokes.
