Instant messenger programs and you

Most of us here use IM programs, often on a daily basis; they range from the video and voice call-focused Skype to other, more basic programs like Pidgin or Trillian.

What is your preferred program for instant messaging? Do you use more than one IM program? Have you switched up what programs you used for IMs over the years? Did anyone use MSN Messenger back when that was alive, too?

    Nowadays I only use Skype.

At one point in time I used Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, AIM, Windows Live Messenger, and Skype at the same time. After a few years of that, I switched to Trillian; although I only combined Gtalk and AIM. I stopped using Yahoo and I continued to use MSN and Skype separately for their exclusive features.

I used to use just about every IM platform under the sun, with the exception of AIM and ICQ, so I eventually just decided to consolidate it all into Pidgin - keeping Skype open on the side. These days I tend to only use Google Hangouts and, when that's having a funny moment, Skype as a backup.

    Skype and FB Messenger.
I barely use any of them. I prefer texting.

I use Skype for the most part, but I only do a lot of IMing. XD I did use MSN A LOT back when it was alive. I actually miss how you could customize your username with colors and stuff. :( I used to be a pro at making mine look awesome. At first, I was reluctant to get Skype. I had used it before, yet I didn't really like the change I guess.

I ended up moving over when most of my friends did. Now, I'm absolutely addicted to it the same way I was with MSN. I do have Skype on my phone, but I hardly use it. The damn thing literally drains up my battery. D:

I used to have so many different IM programs because I had so many different online friends who all had their own preferences and if I were to talk to any of them it would be me having to make the effort to download that one extra IM program.

I eventually ended up just staying with MSN since the friends I had from a certain game all had it. I also used Yahoo! Messenger for family, but that was sorta rare and shared with family.

I eventually moved to skype when I started going on forums because that's where everyone seemed to be back then and I still use the most frequently nowdays. I'd say Facebook is also pretty on par with skype in terms of how often since I only have my online friends on skype and use it more for my real life friends.

I loved MSN, and am not happy at all that they killed it. It was something I used a lot after AOL and AIM stopped being so popular. That was the place where I got to know all of my formerly close and important friends.

Nowadays, I AM on Skype. But... I rarely use it. I don't care for it at all. Hate the interface, hate how laggy it is, hate the small avatars and how I can't see mine when I'm responding to someone, hate... just everything. I hate the feel of it and sending files to other people. It's only really good for voice/video chatting, but I don't really have anyone else to do that with either. Nowadays, I haven't neither the time nor motivation to talk to people on IM. Most of our conversations go nowhere and die, and are just boring. So I don't really bother logging in.

What I do use a bit is Trillian, but that's only really for sending links and roleplaying with my fiance because we both hate Skype. We live together, so it's unnecessary to IM each other otherwise.

I too only really use Skype, though in the past I had things like AIM and MSN but those services aren't really to my liking anymore. The fact that MSN is now dead is pretty disappointing.

I used to use MSN (then later WLM) for talking to online friends and AIM for talking to offline friends, though I always hated AIM in general - but everyone had it. Nowadays I usually just use Facebook messages and texts to talk to offline friends.

Skype is my main IM client now since WLM got killed off, though I still only use it to talk to online friends. I despised it at first, and I still much preferred WLM, but I've gotten used to it and have learned to appreciate some of its features like permanent group chats and things like that.

I never use Skype anymore and I never really used it for IM. I always used WLM because, frankly, it was the best one around. But since they phased it out, I haven't really gone to find another.

I started out with AIM, since AOL was our internet provider back in the day and my mother didn't like me using MSN. I started using that when I got my own laptop, and then switched to Windows Live Messenger when MSN was done away with.

I switched to Skype after that, although I don't really use it all that much. I mean, I'm always on it, but I rarely start conversations or pay much attention to it, and I haven't had a voice call with anyone for about a year now. It's just something I have open so people can get in contact with me quickly if they need to, and not something I start my laptop up just to do, as I used to.
