Online mainly because of interests I get mocked for IRL, but also because I'm able to bypass my social anxiety with it. Well, most of the time - sometimes it's still there - but it's definitely easier for me to strike up a conversation with a stranger online than one IRL (definitely easier). Online communities feel more 'welcome' to me and my kind of problems; I feel less pressure to be 'perfect' in my interactions, especially because you can think over your messages without experiencing the stress you do in a 'live' interaction, and I have room to share my interests with others and build my friendships on that. I don't always feel 'safe' when interacting with RL strangers and online I do.
I don't have significantly more online friends than RL friends, though. At least not anymore; I used to be very active on a different forum and back then I had a lot of friends. But despite that, I know that the people I've interacted somewhat with online wouldn't mind me reaching out to them again to talk - a stress I do feel with RL acquaintances, when I don't dare to send people a message unless I'm really 'friends' with them. Not reaching out to RL people makes it hard to make actual friends, but in my defense that also has to do with a lot of other factors... Ah, social anxiety is a bitch.
