Thank you for participating in Member of the Year 2013! If you have yet to see the results, you can click here and take a look. If there's any comments, questions, or feedback to be given regarding Member of the Year please use this thread to vent such. Any constructive feedback is appreciated, and honesty even moreso; if you liked something, say so! If you hated something, say so! And if you want to see anything in particular in the future, say so!

When the dawn of the new year becomes us once again, staff will review this thread again and keep comments in mind for the future.

Thanks once again, happy new year on behalf of the staff team!

I found the meth one to be really, really inappropriate. I know it's a joke and all in good fun, but I know if I would have gotten something like that, I would have been incredibly, incredibly insulted. And considering the people who won that award, I think, actually do take some drugs recreationally, I do consider it somewhat offensive even though it's not intended to be that way.

That's really the only feedback I have.

I really think MotY went very well this year. I don't have anything negative at all to say, really. I do wish though that there was consistency in the topics, because not all section-specific MotY topics had the other sections' links to them, which could prevent other MotY topics from being seen, even though they were listed in having one.

I know when I was on staff it was something you guys wanted to avoid but there it seemed like a lot of people voted for staff simply because they were staff. Not sure what can be done about that though...

I think the issue is, has been, and always will be that staff are generally more prominent everywhere. And people basically vote for their friends and who they see around. Which are often staff, ex-staff, or soon-to-be-staff. There used to be certain cliques that won absolutely everything basically because they were the well-known ones. It's what MotY is about, though- who are the people that are most well-known? Who are the major contributors? Who do people see around a lot and take note of? It's gonna be the active people. It's often gonna be staff. I don't think it's a sucking-up kinda thing, it's more often just what people see.

I really don't think there is, Nica. Like it or not, staff are known throughout the forums because of their status. Status equals popularity. And MotY is essentially a popularity contest, in essence. That being said, many of the winners actually weren't staff, iirc. A good chunk were recent promotions, too. Guess there's some correlation there.

Anyway, I thought it went smoothly. Kudos to you, Dave. Only thing I'll complain about it how I got fourth for next top model, and how that means I'm inferior to Finnick, but that's a different story.

wait no i thought i got fourth for next top model what is this

For my first MOTY it went smoothly. I don't have anything to compare it to, but nothing bad to say about it either.

Hehe, this was my first MOTY too. Runner-ups ftw. \o/

I have to agree that this years MOTY went quite smoothly. Everything fell into place without any hiccups. It was a good job for all orchestrator, participants, and winners. Congrats to everyone. :)

I liked how this year's MOTY was organised.

My only criticism is that one or two categories were blatantly aimed toward certain members, and in most cases such members one that category. Eg. "Most likely to live for the applause" It's not a massive deal; just a small thing I noticed.

I think majority who entered had some fun, including me; so in that respect MOTY was a success! I'm looking forward to next year's. ;D

It's a popularity contest. People vote for those that are more popular, obviously. Nothing to be surprised about.

I was okay with this MoTY. Great people were the contenders for the main award and that's good.

I can't comment on everything right this moment since I'm heading off soon, but as for the awards that seemed inappropriate or tailored for certain members, they weren't created with people in mind, but rather with popular things from that year in mind simply for people to be voted in for fun. 'Most likely to live for the applause' obviously refers to a popular single by Lady Gaga, the meth-related one is a famous callback to the final season of Breaking Bad and so on, though in retrospect the latter does seem a bit offputting and we'll keep that in mind in the future.. Nothing was specifically created with the intention of being bias towards a particular group, just wiping the suspicion now.

I'll reply in length next chance! Thank you all for the feedback thus far.

That's really the only feedback I have.

I don't really think I understand why you'd be offended by this, haha. I won this category, you're right in thinking what you're thinking about recreational drug use, and I just... found it funny. "Offended" and "insulted" aren't words that'd come into my head thinking about this. Like, at all.

Then again, the fact that we're sat here discussing drugs in a community event thread probably means that they aren't the best thing in the world to bring into MotY. So that's fair enough!

I know when I was on staff it was something you guys wanted to avoid but there it seemed like a lot of people voted for staff simply because they were staff. Not sure what can be done about that though...

Yeah, I kinda agree with this one honestly. Anna has a point in that that's just the way it is, by nature of having a staff position, but I still feel like it's a bit unfair and deflating for everyone else. Maybe not a direct case of sucking up but... yeah. Hrm. I remember in my first MotY (and only because I ended up losing it because of this, haha) staff were removed from the main vote and I really liked it that way. I feel it'd mean a lot more to a regular member than to a member of staff to win that vote and I'd really, really like it to be that way again. So I'll put that forward for next year. When staff already have the favourite moderator and favourite hstaff categories anyway, I don't think we need to be included in the main MotY category.

As usual I think we should work on cutting down on directive (although that wasn't a problem so much this time) or obscure (see: gaga and breaking bad references, only one of which i'd have understood) references and keep categories as straightforward as possible; I know that personally I had no idea what "Live for the applause" meant until Minzy pointed it out just now, and even still, I don't think I'm entirely sure about it right now. d: i totally should've brought this one up before it was posted, haha

Other than that, I think this went really really smoothly. Looks like we've figured out the logistics of how MotY should be handled now and we just need to iron out the kinks. So really, really well done to everybody involved. 8)

Staff can be presented as part of the community. They're so active and popular (and thus deserving of their position) that they're dominating the MotY. Not saying you guys don't deserve it, of course. It's just that they seem to be expected to get that popularity status, if you know what I mean.

Other than that, cheers for this member of the year! I quite loved the way it was handled (and the promo in every forum was really nice)

As you staff people already have heard, I don't like MOTY at all :D I only voted in one of the section-specific rounds since we usually have a similar voting competition in the Roleplay Corner anyways and I knew how I wanted to think when I voted there.

PC is important to me and I do my best to be well liked here, I'm not going to pretend otherwise. I just prefer when popularity isn't outspoken like this because imo putting numbers on how many people cheer for you kind of ridicules the concept. So in my fantasy future, MOTY never returns but good things come to good people anyways. But I know I'm a minority and that MOTY will likely always return, so I'm not going to moan for long about it. Just giving feedback ;) all in all, the system this year went smoooothly. One thing though is that while mods should be available for voting in the general thread, I think they should be banned from receiving votes in the section-specific ones. They shouldn't need the confirmation there :)

I think MOTY is a very interesting competition but not everyone can vote for everything because they don't know which user fits the criteria the most...
That's pretty much why I only voted in section specific because I knew people that fit.
I strongly believe the section voting is easier than the global one...
And staff deserve the awards because they are those who do the most for PC.
So obviously they are in everyone's eyes and everyone knows them.

To sum it up... In my opinion it's fair that most categories go to "bold" (as in BBCode, not as a characteristics =D) users =)
It may sound like discrimination to other users but they should just do something more for PC, right? =D
