As the title suggests, this is a thread to simply appreciate the beauty of classic Generation I sprites and official art (yep, no bashing! Please do that somewhere else).

One of my personal favorites would be Squirtle. Just look at its pose, it looks jolly too! (:

And out of all classic official arts by Ken Sugimori, I like this Charmeleon art a lot! Fierce, isn't it?

I liked Pikachu's sprite and artwork. Pikachu was my favorite Pokémon at the time and I thought it looked cute. I still think that but not as much as before when I was a child.

The Pikachu with white belly, right? :P Tbh, I personally prefer Bellychu over the Pikachu we're seeing today. (:

Here's an 'older' Bellychu from Red and Green (Jp ver.)

(Bulbapedia pics don't allow image hotlinking, so I'm simply posting a link.)

If I recall correctly, this is the first ever Pikachu art, which resembled a mouse.

While an another classic one, I believe this art came sometime during or after the Special Pikachu/Yellow version.

Sugimori's original watercolour art in general was the best.

I like the Japanese Red/Green sprites, a lot of them are way better than the Blue ones, and a lot of them stay true to the Sugimori art for Gen. 1

Idk why people say Red/Green has "horrible" graphics. Just people hearing that it does and spreading false rumors, I guess.

Tbh, there aren't much difference between the Japanese Red/Green sprites and the International Red/Blue (Japanese Blue) when it comes to sprite quality; not everything was bad, there were good stuff too.

  • This Pikachu image is a classic:

    Spoiler:

Very cute and was one of my favorite old Pokémon cards.

And although RB had some weird sprites there were still some good ones that stood out. Particular favorites:

Fairly nicely-drawn although Yellow's sprites beats these games by a long shot.

And if it counts.. don't forget the old production art for Pokémon RB which is pretty iconic and good to look at. How many of you guys have seen some of these?

  • The production art is always so quaint. I love how Rhydon of all Pokémon was the actual first...

RB had some interesting sprites in my opinion... for good or bad, many of them were memorable. Here are some of my favorites, and in keeping on topic, I do like all of these sprites, but maybe not for the right reasons. :>

My absolute favorite is Blastoise... he looks a little bloated.

Our favorite sprites and official arts of Gen I era

Pidgeot has this "orly" face that I love.

I always thought this one just looked off... but it's the first sprite that comes to mind when I think of RB.

Our favorite sprites and official arts of Gen I era

He just looks like he's depixelating. If that's a word.

It looks like a little sphinx here.

It will always be this one for me:

    Whilst I'm here... :P
Our favorite sprites and official arts of Gen I era

That sprite of Mewtwo really lives up to its DPt Pokedex entry.
'A Pokémon created by recombining Mew's genes. It's said to have the most savage heart among Pokémon.' That sprite really screams savage.

And oops we have new replies too.

    Spoiler:

That classic Pikachu art resembles a mouse, which isn't seen much nowadays, sadly. That isn't saying the modern Pikachu art sucks, it's just that I really love how it resembles a mouse since Pikachu is a mouse Pokemon after all!

I love the Gyarados art, similar to Hudson's favorite Mewtwo sprite, that classic Gyarados sprite really looks atrocious.

I've seen those arts and I actually wanna collect all those classic Capsule Monsters art (Pocket Monsters' former name; developing name).

    Spoiler:

Hopefully a Mega Lapras will resemble his former design, ya know, as a homage? I actually love the Lapras we have right now and that beta-Lapras. (:

You can also see Sugimori sensei's art and art style evolved throughout the years, from that beta-Red's art to Red to Kris and Silver's art, to May and Dawn (different generations, but the differences are the color usage). Go compare at Red and Nate's character art style, you wouldn't believe they were drawn by the same person!

While Blastoise looks bloated, but his facial expression looks fiercer than his subsequent generations sprite, haha. Looks like a Pokemon I wouldn't like to mess up with! I do recall when I saw Blastoise for the very first time in my Gen I game, I was like wow this Pokemon looks awesome, I have the most powerful Pokemon in the world, hahaha.

Gastly's sprite, no matter how much I look at it, it reminds me of the spray tool from MS Paint, haha!

Heh, I remember that art style for Pikachu. The anime has also underwent several changes.

    Few of my favorites:

    Ditto says hi.

Dragonair looks just as fierce as Dragonite.

Our favorite sprites and official arts of Gen I era

Like how Arcanine looks majestic there.

Dragonair and Gyarados along a few others have lost that fierceness as we progress. That's not to say the modern sprites suck a lot. There's just something so attractive with those Pokemon looking rough.

How dare you to post the refined Yellow sprites? Hey, hey easy. Just completely kidding. :P To be real honest some yellow sprites are even better than Gen II - V sprites, and oops gotta stop there before being labelled as a Genwunner, hahaha.

That sprite of Lapras is really fitting for him. Ice-type were the second type to dominate the metagame after Psychic (due to their high Special stat).

Ninetales' Yellow sprite is one of the most memorable sprites. She really looks regal with that pose.

  • I particularly love the artwork of Gengar, Nidorino, Grimer and Muk. Grimer's just like "dude no waaaaay" while Gengar's being all sinister n shiz.

In regards to sprites, I think Magikarp was done particularly well.
Our favorite sprites and official arts of Gen I era

Eevee's is also really cute. It looks so determined, aha!

But...this dude here creeps me the fuck out. Let's be real.

Dragonite looks bomb in this. Honestly, even if it turned out to be a super weak Pokemon, I'd totally catch it just for its amazing sprite.

Arcanine looks amazing that's for sure. it's a shame I never caught one in the original games!

That's what I thought about Ghastly too! Cool effect - and kind of creepy. Vileplume looks like it's adjusting its weave. "Hang on gurl, I'm gonna battle chu but lemme just fix ma weave. k all good. Leggo"

As for the official artwork, I think Nidoking is awesome:
    https://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/b/b4/034Nidoking_RB.png
Yeah, Nidoking looks like a total boss in its original artwork.

There's just something about the artwork back then that gives a lot of Pokemon (at least to me anyway) a really intimidating look compared to the work now.

    Hahaha love it.
