no shitposting thanks

What's your career? What drew you to it? How rewarding is it today compared to when you first started out/were studying for it?

What I have right now can't be called a career, I work minimum wage doing warehousing type stuff. :(

I would absolutely love to be doing something involving computers, especially programming stuff, but I currently don't have the credentials.

I really need to get my butt back into school. :/

My primary interest is zoology. I have wanted to work with exotic animals for my whole life. I started out by volunteering my time at a nearby zoo to gain experience and I studied to get qualifications. Now I work at a national park/wildlife sanctuary. It is a very competitive line of work and one that needs passion because its not a high paying job.
I do enjoy my job but it is worth remembering that your dream job might be something you love but still hard work and not always what was expected.

If you're willing to, you can start building up your reputation by freelancing. Start small, such as free projects for friends and families, or you could get in touch with small start up companies (preferably a company that isn't IT focused) and offer to help them get started on a system. From my experience, most employers, especially in entry-level programming jobs, would prefer a person with experience over a fresh college graduate whose experience was wholly within the classroom.

My main expertise is perl programming, and nobody told it's practically useless in most places. :'(

Also, with what I know about hacking, I wouldn't dare write programs for any company knowing the insecurities involved with it. :(

At least I got my really young cousin started with a linux computer, I take that as a small victory! :P

Edit: Besides, I have a goal in mind that doesn't involve making any money, so I really don't care, as long as I have a roof over my head. :P

I guess I have a career as a development engineer at a research institute. Not entirely sure I'll work here my whole life, or even as a researcher/chemist my whole life, but for the foreseeable future I think I have a good thing going. I'll try to climb in ranks so to speak, and get some more project responsibility and learn as much as I possibly can to become a specialist like my mentor p much is. But I highly value to not be stressed out by my job and have a stimulating life outside of it, so I won't push too hard too fast :)

Studying for IT manager so that's hopefully gonna be my career path.
Had the thought of being a pro gamer in my head but at this age I think I passed that dream tbh

The career I'm trying to get into is French to English Translation. I'm almost there, but it's tough breaking into the industry. Currently working on my resume and gonna fire it off to a few agencies in the city when it's polished and ready to go. I'm also waiting on results to see if I passed the practice exam for becoming a certified translator.

It's been 1 month since I started working. I can't really call it a career but at least it's a good start, nice working environment and good hopes for the future.

that's a highly specific field! when one becomes a certified translator, what kinda job opportunities do they have?

Spent a year working as national head of marketing for a global non-profit (humble brag) which was a lot of fun. Showed me that marketing is the field I want to go into, despite it not being what I studied in un. Specifically digital marketing, I think it's a really exciting and dynamic area.

Back at uni this semester but graduating soon so looking for marketing-related jobs as well, particularly those in the non-profit sector so I can combine marketing with doing something good for the world.

I edit reality TV

It may not be the Most Artistic but it's honest work that brings joy and entertainment to a lot of people. It's very fulfilling and an industry full of tv/film/game/comedy/music nerds so I'm right at home. love my job.

All sorts of things, video games, medical journals, marketing, resumes... I'm not really sure what I want my specialization to be in, but I'm leaning towards technical (manuals, software guides, etc)

Hairstylist.

Went after it since sophomore year of high school because I tricked myself into thinking I wanted to make people feel good about themselves.
Honestly I had a revelation about a year or two ago. I only got into it because I was one of 3 openly gay kids at a school in a small town along the Bible Belt. So I had to fit into a certain category as a gay and stick to it, otherwise I wasn't worth anything. So I became the fashionista and hair kid in school, carried it into cosmetology school, and even a little afterwards getting started in salons.
To be honest I rather hate working in customer service and hate working under people. Hair now is just an art outlet for me. I enjoy doing hair still, but I'd rather do more artful designs than the everyday client wants (trim, root retouch, or a refresh on highlists = kill me). Recently I've been into barbering more, as you can get a lot more creative with that.

It's rewarding when I feel I do a good job. Doing the same junk everyday drags on me miserably, so I'd like to get some different clients I think.

Dude that?s amazing.

Before getting sick I was on my way to earning an education degree and at the beginnings of a career as a dance coach. Obviously being an invalid has put a spanner in the works but a friend (also a dance teacher) and I are looking into starting a business of our own that I'll hopefully be able to participate in sometime in the near future.

I'm a library tech and I'm working in both a school and a public library. It's really great because my tasks are quite varied and I get to promote reading and learning to my patrons.

Heck, last week, I spent a few hours of work time crafting pumpkins, cats, and bats for a Halloween display. It was great!
