Crystal hack: Pokemon Sour Crystal (improvement hack)

How do I evolve Tangela, Lickitung, Sneasel and Gligar ?

Im not sure, did you download the new update?
Yes, I'm using the 2.1 version.
When I'm patching with the IPS file, everything is fine. But when I try to compile with Cygwin64 (without any error) my game don't contain the Pokegear and the unique sprites. But everything else is working. Whats wrong? I would like to use my own compiled game because of some edits.
 
Hello again.

This 'improvement hack' of Pokemon Crystal has been 5 years in the making.
I created it with mindset of updating Crystal to 'current-gen' standards but without losing the nostalgic feel of the original.

The hack has many features that may make playing it more comfortable for newer players such as the "PPS" system (pokeride).

UPDATE: 7/11/20
-Added a fourth Time of Day: EVENING. Day ends at 5pm and Night starts at 8pm. During EVENING, wild encounters are the same as DAY.
-Updated more movepools for some pokemon
-Various bug fixes


This hack includes:
- +200 new animated front sprites and static backsprites with updated normal and shiny palettes (all done by myself)
- Dark Type is now physical and Ghost is now Special (phys/spec split is NOT present)
- Pokemon that evolve via trade or trade with items now evolve by 'using' said item or via using a 'Covenant Orb' (graveler/haunter/kadabra/machoke)
- Updated movepools/basestats for many pokemon that reflect up to Gen 8
- Updated attacks/effects/basepower/accuracy that reflect up to Gen 8
- Addition of routes 47/48 and cliff cave from HGSS
- A somewhat different Yellow Forest taken from Polished Crystal (with permission from Rangi ofc)
- Kanto region has been expanded to 1:1 in size with its appearance in Gen 1
- A new Pokegear App. The "PPS" or "Pokemon-Pager-System" allows the player to summon a specific pokemon to
use HM moves in the overworld, thus, eliminating the need for HM Slaves.
Each pager is received when you acquire the corresponding HM move.
- Reusable TMs. HMs still exist and no longer need the Move Deleter to overwrite.
- All Trainers and Gym Leaders in Kanto have had their levels increased to be similar to HGSS' curve.
- Fruit Trees have been split into 'Berry Trees' and 'Apricorn Trees'. Apricorns and Berries will visible on the trees in the overworld when they are available.
- Kurt now gives the Player their finished Apricorn Balls immediately after giving Kurt the Apricorns.
- Apricorn Balls now have their own unique palettes in battle.
- The GS ball is obtained when you enter the pokemon center in Goldenrod after completing the E4 the first time.
- The Odd Egg now has a 50% of hatching a Shiny.
- Many Kanto-only Gen 2 Pokemon can now be obtained in Johto such as Houndour/Murkrow/Slugma.
- Viridian Forest/Seafoam Islands/Cerulean Cave have been added from HGSS.
- Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres/Mewtwo can now be obtained in the same locations as in HGSS once the player has acquired all 16 badges.

Is there any way to make this game harder? I downloaded it last night, I love the new sprites btw. My dream Rom hack would be crystal with what you've done so far and also new move animations with a harder difficulty. But let me know if it's possible to increase the gym leader's team and the level curve. Thanks again for the aesthetically pleasing game.

Definitely agree with this! A hard optional latch would be really nice with the already included features!
 
I love this hack! I can't tell though, have you fixed the original's bugs with the catch rates? Status effects such as paralysis and sleep are supposed to increase catch rate by 5 but don't do anything, and certain Apricorn Balls (Fast, Love, and Moon, if I remember correctly) have their catch rate improvement prerequisites set incorrectly and thus don't work as intended, with the Moon being no better than a normal Poké Ball. If this has been fixed (or if not, if at the very least it's planned to be) I would be the happiest Pokémon player alive. I have an older patch and only just now got an account to make this comment, so I don't have many of the newer features/fixes, if any. Because the fact that those Apricorn Balls are glitched has annoyed me for years, and while I know HGSS fixed that, it's not the same to me.

Edit: I also should have asked before patching my ROM, but if I already have a save file on my system for Crystal, is that save file still good to use with Sour Crystal or do you recommend I start over? I only ask because of the much bigger features that were added in Sour Crystal

I've just started my journey in Sour Crystal and I really wanna congrats you on all the little updates you made !
It keeps the game as it is but enhanced so many little things that I really think Nintendo should be jealous. ;)
And the sprite animations are awesome. Great job. ✊

PS : I've just got my first shiny ever !! Are the rates changed or I've just got lucky ? :D

All the apricorn balls are fixed and work as intended. Except perhaps the FAST BALL which works as it doesn in gen4+
Everything else you mentioned is also fixed so dont worry :)

It would be really nice if you could add Mew, the Kanto starters, the other two Johto starters and the Fossil PKM, so I can finally complete the Dex in this perfect Hack. Running shoes could also be useful.

Very good to know, thanks! But you didn't answer my second question, is it possible to convert a save file from vanilla Crystal to Sour Crystal or would I need to start over from the beginning? I'll use the Pager Card as an example. If I were to go past the point where Elm would give the Pager Card, would the Pager Card automatically be unlocked, would I just be able to talk to Elm again to get the Card, would I have to go through the whole cutscene where he gives it to me, or am I just locked out of the Pager Card for the entire game, preventing me from using that feature entirely?

-Added the Pokemon Mansion to Cinnabar Island. As well as the ability to obtain Mew. Try and figure out how!
-Updated more movepools for some pokemon
-Various bug fixes

Hey, sorry to ask this again, but I wanted to get your thoughts on something since my question wasn't answered last time. Regarding this:

- All Trainers and Gym Leaders in Kanto have had their levels increased to be similar to HGSS' curve.

Any desire to update Johto trainers as well? I know the Gym Leaders (in most cases) had their Pokemon levels increased, along with the Rocket Executives I believe. Like, Falkner's Pidgey and Pidgeotto going from levels 7 and 9 in G/S/C to levels 9 and 13 in HG/SS for instance

I played your game up to the end! I want to say that I really loved it! It's awesome, very well done and it was very fun in most cases! It brings back memories from HGSS in Kanto, which is really good!

What I really liked in your game:
- The new sprites for the Pokémon, as well as the new mini-sprites for them! It feels like your game is really unique, and in some cases, better than the original! :) The fact that each Pokémon has it's own mini-sprite is really awesome, and it should have been this way in the originals as well! Very good job! ;) ;)
- New movesets for most Pokémon! This makes your game more unique, and exciting too, and different too! ;)
- You kept the original 251 Pokémon and the same moves as Gen 2! It's very important for trading with TGB DUAL with all games, including originals! ;) Thanks for keeping those the same! ;)
- The moves got updated up to Gen 8! This is truly awesome, coz I do this in all my Gold version games (since 2018 precisely), but I keep them up to Gen 7 (which is very good enough), and always, coz I want the same basis for all my Gold version games, and my future ones too! I'm very glad that I'm not the only who do this! Thanks for doing this as well! Very good job! ;)
- TMs compatibility have also been updated up to Gen8 for most Pokémon (Well, I tried teaching Sweet Scent to my Teddiursa via TM12, but it can't learn it, even though it learn Sweet Scent via level-up, but it's alright and i don't care much about Sweet scent, coz it was just for trying it!)! This is really awesome that you did this as well, and I do this too in my Gold version games as well! Very good job for this too! ;)
- The fact that TMS are reusable all the time, like HMs! This is a huge improvement, and I couldn't believe it!!! This is REally awesome for sure! I was feeling like I played Black2, the best and last game I bought! It's really fun to have TMs that are reusable! It should have been this way in all games since the first one! A very good job for this significant and important change! ;)
- The fact that use of HMs are replaced by a brand new fonction, the Pager! This is also very huge improvement, and it's so convenient and awesome!!! I didn't believe it too, and it could have always been a feature present in all games since the first ones! Because of it, we don't need to teach weak or useless moves in fight like Cut and Flash anymore, and it's a very welcome change! Thanks a lot for doing this too! A very well done job too! ;)
- The fact we can reuse a repel when one is finished! I remember this feature was in Black2 too, and it's really convenient too! Thanks for putting this too! Well done! ;)
- Kanto Gyms and most Kanto trainers got updated and stronger! Thanks a lot for this, coz Kanto was really more fun and more challenging than the original game! ;)
- The new areas (Viridian Forest, Cerulean Cave, Seafoam Cave, Yellow Forest, Route 47-48 and Pokémon Mansion are all really awesome and very well done! They really feel like we're playing HG/SS in most of them. However, the brand new one: Yellow Forest (instead of Safari Zone), is really cool too, but I wonder where it come from? Whatever, seeing new places is always awesome in a game, and love differences! ;) Good job for all of this! ;)
- The new musics for Routes 47-48, Yellow Forest, Cerulean City and Routes 24-25, as well as legendray battles musics, are all very well done and enjoyable! Very good job for this! ;)
- Blue's Gym was really cool and awesome! A great memory from HG-SS! ;) Thanks so much! ;)
- GS Ball is obtainable in your game, and so, we can get Celebi!

However, here's what I liked less in your game:
- Well, most trainers in Johto, including the Gyms and Elite Four, are the same as in the original game! However, since there are new movesets for Pokémon, it's not that of a problem! But, I would have liked some differences, even little...
- Most dialogs (like 98%) are the same as the original game. However, it's not that of a problem too, since it's still Johto and Kanto... It's alright!
- It was funny that a boy in Cerulean City talks about Cerulean Cave in the past form ("There used to be a cave...), when in reality, in your game, the cave is still present and we clearly see it! :) It's just funny and weird!
- Why would we buy TM29 (Psychic) at Celadon Game Corner when we can get it for free in Mr. Psychic's house in Saffron City? At least, there's a verification of this! (Good job for this! );) Also, the fact that TM33, TM41 and TM48 are both sold in the two big marts (Goldenrod and Celadon) is redondant. I think all TMs should be sold/obtained in one place...(it's not that of a problem, but it would make more sense.)
- The new Pokémon Center on Route 3 is nice, but if you lose a battle after exiting it, you're sent back in your home, in New Bark Toen (Johto)... I know a solution: Make a jealing house with a tilest from an house (like the one on Route 26 where you can heal your Pokémon) The reason for this is the Pokémon Center tileset (well, it's this way in a gold version game). Believe me! ;) Otherwise, it's not so "grave", coz we can always use fly via the Pager to return all the way to Pewter City, and so to Mt.Moon or Route 3.
- The fact the adventure is mostly the same as the original game, but it's not a big problem... I was expecting this, so it's alright.

Bref, I'm really proud to have played your game, and I will keep it in my games for sure, coz I want to play it again in the future! You did a very excellent job (sometimes even better than me!). I truly respect your work and your skills, and it's clear that you put a lot of work, passion and love into it! :) I felt it all the way in my adventure in your game! ;) Also, I think we have things in common in this domain, and I sincerely love what you done, and I'm sure that if we were to know each other in the real life, we could get along very well, coz it's clear that we have a passion for creating games and Pokémon! ;) However, i don't think this will happen ever, but it's alright! ;) Don't worry! ;) I just support you! ;)

If you have made some other games (Gen 1 or Gen 2 with same original Pokémon and original moves (but moves can be updated up to Gens later, like 3 to 8)), I will be very interested to try them! ;)

I sincerely wish you the best success and luck in your fututre projects, if you have some others! ;)
