With the upcoming releases of Sun and Moon, I thought I'd go back and rank every generation from 1 to 6.
Keep in mind that I don't think any of the Pokemon games are bad, I just think some are better than others. I'm only ranking by main series, but feel free to rank any way you wish.

    6. Generation IV: Too much like the other games. Physical Special split was good. Little graphical upgrade... Nothing really stands out, started the legendary bloat, controversial Pokemon designs/evolutions (Rypherior, I'm looking at you) very slow and unpolished imo... 7/10

5: Generation VI: Huge graphical upgrade, removal of legendary bloat (kinda, gen 3 terms) lots of QoL, horrible story, Megas can go either way for me, okayish Pokemon designs, not much endgame... meh. 7.5/10

4 Generation III: Nice graphical upgrade, 60fps, Abilities, good-ish story, natures, unique region, great pokemon designs, intriguing endgame (but wasn't long), 8.5/10

3 Generation I: It started the series! Everything we know and love started here. Classic Pokemon designs, interesting but not too invasive plot, more focus on catching/trading. It doesn't really stand up today (I'd give it around a 7 or a 7.5) but back then it was around close to a 9-10.

2 Generation V: Amazing story, new Pokemon adventure with new Pokemon only, better graphics, didn't improve much overall but a very solid entry due to it being distinctive. 9.5/10

1 Generation II: Color graphics! Sprites that aren't horrible! The perfect amount of Pokemon that can be caught in a reasonable amount of time! Day/Night! 2 Regions! Less focus on story, but it's not terrible, just simple. Evolutions of some of our favorites, great designs, albeit a few weird ones, memorable rival, gyms, etc. Also added a plethora of new mechanics, shiny pokemon, breeding, weather, the list goes on. I am proud to give these games a perfect 10.

6th - Gen 5, I don't think any of the games are bad but I absolutely have to put gen 5 as 6th because it gave me an anti-urge to play it.. I had to force myself to even rush through it, beat the E4, and then give it to my little brother to mess with.. Can't judge on it's gameplay since I barely touched it for more than a couple of days but no Pokemon game has been like this for me, I usually love to explore every nook and cranny while learning all the aspects of it's gameplay.

5th - Gen 6, I love what they implemented into the games, such as character customization, but the downsides really outweigh the positive aspects. Horrible post-game (if you can call it that), story was ugh, outside of Lumiose there's not much content, Team Flare was garbagely pointless, and I don't even want to start on the rivalries and dialogue... cringes

4th - Gen 3, this gen felt a bit awkward and boring to me. Post-game was lacking, until Battle Frontier in Emerald came along (so fun), and was the beginning of the cheesy rivalries that slowly degraded over the generations.. coughgen6cough

3rd - Gen 4, this gen probably takes second for most hours played right behind GSC. The new evolutions were weird and there was an abundance of legends but I didn't see much else wrong with this gen. HGSS remakes in the 4th gen though. *-*

2nd - Gen 1, nostalgia lol. FRLG weren't too bad, Sevii Islands were a nice touch. Competitive aspects are stupidly hilarious compared to today.

1st - Gen 2, I was at the age where I could fully understand Pokemon and mechanics when GSC was released and not mindlessly wander around. Although lacking in new Pokemon, it made up for with a little bit of everything. Graphics, day and night, eggs, the good stuff. Post-game content was just right, the amount of Pokemon that you could catch was just right, almost everything felt right. It seems like I'm always doing a playthrough of the original GSC or a hacked version, can never get tired of it.

RIP rivals ;-; (3 and 4 you guys were ok..)

    From favourite to least favourite.

    Generation IV
    Generation III
    Generation VI
    Generation V
    Generation II
    Generation I

    This is surprisingly easy.

    6. Gen V. Whilst I enjoyed Black 2, there is no getting around the fact that Black very nearly put me off the franchise entirely and, coming off Gen IV, it was especially bad. Part of my dislike of this gen comes from unfortunately raised expectations: I'd heard a lot about how the story for this gen was supposed to be better, and the reality of the situation was not what I had been led to believe. I was immensely put off by the standalone nature of the first titles - and it didn't help that, due to a lack of appealing designs, it took me a very long time to put a team together - and the adjusted EXP growth rate that made training a horrific slog and not particularly enjoyable. Unova itself wasn't very well presented either; it was a very drab and uninspiring region and, after the beautiful colour palettes HG/SS had treated me with, it was even more off-putting. Gen V is easily my least favourite Generation. Much as I like Meloetta.

    5. Gen III. Those bloody trumpets! Yes, the music is a major reason I dislike Gen III. It's horrible. Apart from that, Gen III was released at a time where I wasn't particularly interested in the franchise. Going back to a single region after GSC felt like a step backwards, and it wasn't even a particularly large region. With Team Magma and Team Aqua it felt like you were only getting half the story with each game, too...and Emerald pretty much confirmed that when it was released. As with Gen V, there aren't many Gen III Pokemon I like either.

    4. Gen VI. Gen VI was a disappointment for me. Kalos felt very threadbare and unfinished; it was a test run for the 3DS and little else, I think. The new polygon models lack the charm of the sprite models of earlier generations, too. ORAS did little to excite me either, being remakes of what had been my least favourite generation before Gen V...and having that incomplete story flaw present in RS.

    3. Gen I. I'm fond of Gen I, although as time has gone by and Pokemon has improved it's been bumped down somewhat. I'm not someone who is typically blinded by nostalgia when it comes to video games - I am capable of recognising and acknowledging that games improve as the formula is refined and, whilst the core gameplay has remained the same, Pokemon has evolved far beyond what Gen I was...and playing Yellow recently has only highlighted this. That said, I enjoyed Gen I a lot more than I did later generations, so it's still ranked fairly highly for me.

    2. Gen II. Oh god, Gen II was so exciting! Still the biggest games in the franchise in terms of things to do and explore (excluding the remakes, anyway) I still love the second generation for all the things it introduced to the franchise - day/night cycles, eggs, shiny Pokemon, etc - and for being a great continuation of the Gen I titles. It felt great to revisit Kanto at the end, and the way the plot followed on from those games, despite being threadbare, was a nice touch. Being able to play as a female trainer for the first time in Crystal was a novelty, too.

    1. Gen IV. Easily my favourite generation, which got me back into the franchise in earnest. Diamond and Pearl were fantastic games that breathed new life into the franchise for me with a huge number of Pokemon I loved from the get-go, a more expansive feeling region than Hoenn with Sinnoh, and some great Legendaries, despite the high number of them. The physical/special split and online features also allowed me to trade and battle online with my friends for the first time, which I loved. Platinum was even better. Then HG/SS were released, bringing what had been my favourite generation before this to the DS, cramming it with a ton of features I loved - the Pokewalker, following Pokemon, etc - and finally letting me explore new regions again. Generation IV was amazing, and Game Freak have yet to reach those heights again, in my opinion.

    #6 - Generation V
The only thing I personally felt it had going was the story, but it didn't feel enough for me. I was not particularly fond of excluding all non-Gen. V Pokémon from the region's roster.

    #5 - Generation VI
Not factoring ORAS due to that being more Gen. III material. Counting XY only, it's a toss-up between this and Gen. IV. Huge points for improved graphics and atmosphere. Lots of throwback material.

    #4 - Generation IV
Not factoring HGSS due to that being more Gen. II material. Counting only DPPt, it's a toss-up between this and Gen. VI. The game had an illusion of being way bigger than it actually was due to the region's environment. It's not a bad thing; sometimes we need that feeling.

    #3 - Generation I
    Nostalgia.

    #2 - Generation III
Not factoring FRLG. The overall feel of the environment was huge for me, probably due to a combination of having a close "rival" character as a neighbor, your father as a gym leader, etc. Everything felt connected and made Hoenn feel like home.

    #1 - Generation II
The atmosphere of Johto is by far my favorite and the fact that it was two games in one. While Gen. I started it all, I felt Gen. II really established many founding game elements and mechanics.

    RHYPERIOR IS AWESOME GODDAMMIT!!!!!!

    1. Gen IV
    2. Gen I
    3. Gen II
    4. Gen V
    5. Gen VI
    6. Gen III

Get ready to see an unusual pick for number 1. From worst to best:

    6. Generation 6. Other than not caring for ORAS very much, I also did not enjoy the "feel" of these games. I can't explain how much the washed out aesthetics kind of drained my enjoyment and made the battles feel very... dull. I was also not fond of the fact that each area had a bajillion different Pokemon to catch. It was confusing and there were too many options. And I absolutely HATE Lumiose City. That place is not only confusing, but having listened to that music for so long being lost in it has driven me crazy and made me hate the theme too. Thankfully, the Pokemon designs followed in Gen V's footsteps for me. Being quite good, if sparse. (It introduced my favorite Pokemon, Braixen, after all) The small amount of Pokemon was bothersome for making a team made almost entirely of them. But hey, it added Mega Evolution. I liked that.

However, these games made me lose a lot of vigor and interest in Pokemon due to how... unfulfilling they felt in comparison to other generations. You didn't really have to put in the time and hard work anymore to train your Pokemon, even without the EXP Share, and the difficulty just danced all over the place. Then there was the extensive Gen 1 pandering. I don't dislike Gen 1. Not at all. But this just felt... really ingenuine and like they were tooting its horn far too much. Going as far as to include Kanto starters as an option during the main game and give you its legendaries as an option. The story being a step down from Black and White also grinded my gears quite a bit. Lots of potential, and a whole lot of nothing. I just want to forget Gen VI ever existed (other than the Pokemon designs), to be honest, and was absolutely glad that they were skipping a Z version to just move on to something new.

    5. Generation 3. This was the only generation I skipped over entirely and I just really don't care about it at all. I don't hate it. I just... don't care. I loved the Pokemon designs, but not the Hoenn region too much. Also, it had a lot of weird idiosyncrasies. It refined the Pokemon formula, but that lack of a special/physical split in spite of seeming so much more advanced than what preceeded it really made it feel so primitive. It was just this awkward hybrid to me of Generation IV and Generations I and II. A teenage stage. Also, I kind of resent it for removing the more humble nature of Gens I and II. It just feels more... commercialized and mainstream. Just much cleaner due to being the start of modern Pokemon.

    4. Generation 4. An improvement over Generation 3 and how I got back into the series after that hiatus, but I wasn't the most fond of it. The first half was... really lackluster to me. All I remember from these games is Cynthia. I also disliked or was "meh" about the whole batch of starters it had to offer, which wasn't a way to excite me. There were a lot of cool designs though. (Luxray, Staraptor, and who could forget Lucario?) And it finally introduced the special/physical split and Wi-Fi, two features that changed a lot. Further, HeartGold is one of my favorite games in the series. If this generation had just HGSS, I'd rate it higher. But I have to put into consideration the MAIN games, and I just didn't enjoy my time with Diamond as much.

    3. Generation 1. Another one I kind of skipped over, having started with Gen 2. It's primitive, it's clunky, it's goddamn slow, and the graphics are ugly as sin. (Not counting Yellow, which improved them slightly) Also, too many Poison-types and a lot of bland designs that I just kind of forget exist. (Farfetch'd, Pinsir, both of its fossils) But it has a charm to it, I won't deny that. It feels much more sincere than the other generations, because it doesn't know what it wants to be yet, and it doesn't know that it's going to be a big hit. That sincerity and humbleness makes it a more refreshing experience. It's just... really odd and that's entertaining in its own way. I suppose I could call it "quaint."

    2. Generation 2. Biased here, I know. It was my first generation, after all. I've played through Gold and Silver so much, they're the only Pokemon games I know by heart. Honestly, I'm not even fond of the Johto Pokemon too much. It introduced even more bland and forgettable ones. (Sunflora, Quillfish, Magcargo) But it had some of my favorite cross-gen evolutions as well, and ones that fit in perfectly with the older designs. (Umbreon and Espeon especially.) And it was just... so weird and quirky. It is unlike any other Pokemon game released after Gen I, because it is a direct continuation. Its Pokemon aren't redundant for the most part and it isn't afraid not to follow series "traditions" that I find tiring. There are no fossils or Pikachu rip-offs. The fact is as well, it improved upon its predecessor immensely. It added such key features as genders, breeding, splitting items into different sections in the bag, etc. And of course, TWO regions. The main billing that people still won't get over to this day. I find these games to be a masterful series of sequels. These are how you improve upon a series whilst still keeping the same feel of it.

    1. Generation 5! The ever unpopular Generation 5. Yes, they surpass my first games. Why? Well, because when I play a video game, there is one thing you can do to really make me like it. That's making me care about its characters and story. Now, Black and White aren't Final Fantasy level. These aren't the deepest or best stories ever told. But for a Pokemon game? They set the bar much higher than what I had seen before. This was the one time a Pokemon game surprised and impressed me.

The graphics and sprites also had this very fresh and lively feeling. They moved in a... somehow more fluid way than the models. I loved the interface. And some of the human designs were even INTERESTING to me, which rarely happens. (Bianca, Elesa in BW2, Alder, Cheren, Professor Juniper, N) Speaking of humans, the human characters.. they actually had a personality beyond a few sentences. They really grew on me, particularly Bianca, who I could relate to because of her father disapproving of her journey.

Then there was the music. The story wouldn't have had nearly as much as an impact if I hadn't loved that phenomenal music. I found most of the tracks to be very memorable. Elite 4, legendary battles, gym battles, all so full of energy. And then there was that one piano song that plays when Bianca is speaking to her father... that was the most emotional track I've ever heard in a Pokemon game.

These games were just so odd compared to the rest, and that's what I appreciate. Oddity, breaking norms and patterns, standing out. They didn't let you use older Pokemon; they forced you to use entirely brand new ones. (Admittedly, some of those were rip-offs of older ones, which I don't like so much. But I still appreciate the feeling of a reboot) Other people, they complained and complained about this. Me? I loved it! Everything new, everything fresh. (Was quite disappointed when brought back the older Pokemon for BW2) Also, there were loads of great designs. Not just the trash and ice cream Pokemon as others like to fixate on. But things like Mienshao, Zoroark, Excadrill, Serperior, Scolipede, Lilligant, etc. It was really difficult for me to decide what to have on my team.

And it introduced my favorite legendary of all time. Reshiram. Look at that thing. It is so beautiful and perfect, I can't explain to you how much it pleases my aesthetic senses. A pure white graceful bird/mammal/dragon hybrid. If these games weren't my favorites, I'll be honest, I wouldn't have ranked Gen 6 as low as I did. But they gave me enthusiasm for the future of Pokemon, which set me up for massive disappointment in the current gen. I only hope that Sun and Moon emulate the parts of Gen 5 that I absolutely love.

I'm going to leave out Generations I and II, since I barely played them and don't have enough nostalgia to stand the graphics. From worst to best:

Gen IV: Too many legendaries, loses points for introducing several Pokémon that I dislike.

Gen VI: Quite fun, but the games were too easy, but I wasn't a huge fan of some of the graphics and the 3D models of Pokémon were bland and boring. Also I'm not really into the story of XY.

Gen V: I haven't finished playing it at the moment, as I skipped over it the first time, but I like what I see. It uses 3D well without going overboard (I'm looking at you, Lumiose City!) and I like the gym leaders having a more active role in the story, which is something I always wanted.

Gen III: My first generation! I have so much nostalgia for it, and even ORAS can't beat Emerald in my books. I love the graphic style, no 3D is often better in my opinion, and it was before we started getting really stupidly designed Pokémon because the creators were clearly out of ideas.

Gen IV: It was big leap, but somehow I enjoy Platinum and Johto Remake than Diamond/Pearl and yes way too much introducing legendaries, good story overall and was thrilling challenging

Gen III: Graphic was good, story was good and I enjoy Hoen more than Kanto remake because what I find in LG was very lackluster of postgame (exclude mewtwo)

Gen VI: the story on XY wasn't very much entertaining and downright bland, the 3D was just bit edgy than the sidegames like Gates, overal I enjoy ORAS more than XY

Personally I count remakes by the gen they were made in. From worst to best:

    6. Gen 3.
Ssssoooooooo overrated. Yeah, I just don't see the appeal. I've never had access to play that gen, and once I did, guess what? By that time, I had ORAS, which outclasses this overhyped peice of turd by twice the diameter of the earth. Uragh.

    5. Gen 1
See above, but hey, at least it started the entire series and it's mons werent too horrible, I'll give it that.

    4. Gen 2
Well suffice to aay I'm more lenient on this one as I find it to be the best gen mon-wise. Nothing more to add.

    3. Gen 5
Finally the gens I've played. I used to like BW1 a lot for some reason for a short period of time but now I don't like it as much now. But I guess it's because I haven played it in a long time, but it isn't bad because of that. Black 2 is still mehsies tho.

    2. Gen 6
When XY was revealed, I was angry. INFURIATED, even. But why is it so high? Because yep, I underestimated it. Sure XY's plot left something to be desired, but other than that, I like everything else about it, and it's probably my 2nd favourite game. As for ORAS, I repeat, It literally outclassed it's origin by twice the diameter of the earth.

    Aaand the winner is...
    1. Gen 4
Shocked huh? But Hate all you want, but this is my pick. It didn't have a trash final game like Gen 5, nor did it have bad mon designs like Gen 6. And I'm not saying that it's perfect, none of the gens are. However, I feel this one has the least disadvantages for me, and so this is why I feel I like it the most. Sure, I can see why some people don't like some of the mon designs, but even then, I wouldn't say it was that bad, and I actually did like the cross gen evos(I know a few people who don't like those either, but I understand since I get it isn't good to see a mon you like get weirder looking when they get stronger, and I know others have opinions). But the main reason why I like this gen is more for the games.
As you might know, Plat and HG were my first games(yeah, this gen was my first gen) and for some reason, I have more fun with these 2 games more than all the rest. It could be nostalgia, the fact I find them to be just more fun, or I just like them in general. And with all that in mind, their generation is as a result, my favourite of all the 6 in my opinion. See? Looks like you don't have to favor your first gen solely from nostalgia.

Yeah, I posted something like this in my blog a while back and my opinion didn't change :P

    1. Generation II - GSC
Two regions for the price of one, nice improvement on sprite design, more depth to cities while retaining a classic/retro feel, Miltank was introduced. The starters are a bit meh for me. I like the designs but they're boring to use. Lots of new additions to the games such as breeding, steel type, Battle Tower, happiness and a legendary encounter included in the main story.

    2. Generation I - RBY
This probably would have been number one for me if GSC didn't let you revisit Kanto. Although I think GSC is better, I have more love for RBY. How do you like my nostalgia tinted spectacles.

    3. Generation Vi - XY
A lot of people didn't like the story and felt it was too short. I agree that the writers could have done the Champion (I can't even remember her name) more justice. I really enjoyed the story, I love exploring the region, all the shops in Lumiose. New features such as Pokemon Amie, Wonder Trade and Friend Safaris make the game much more fun for me. Trainer customisation is something I've been waiting a long time for and I hope this is expanded upon in future games. The new starters have great typing and movepools but I'm not keen on their final evolution designs.

    4. Generation IV - DPPt
The introduction of wifi was huge for me. At the time, the only person I knew that played Pokemon was my sister's annoying friend so I made good use of this feature. Without it I wouldn't be playing Pokemon anywhere near as much as I do. I hated the new legendary designs, with the exception of Shaymin. Piplup was the only starter I liked. The graphics enhancement was sweet - I remember being very excited to see that when I first played.

    5. Generation V - BW/2
The only reason this isn't last is because of the Dream World. I like that the story wasn't as typical as some of the others, Pokemon Gym interiors were a lot more dynamic, cities actually felt like cities rather than big towns. Some of the Pokemon designs were... strange. I hated the starters. I don't hate this game but I feel like others have more important additions. I wouldn't mind seeing something similar to Dream World again. I'm not sure how likely that is.

    6. Generation III - RSE
I love a lot of the new Pokemon in this generation. The starters are amongst my favourite. But I don't think enough features were added to the game for me to place it higher. Wireless Link and updated graphics are all I can think of. I also don't like the region that much and if I don't like the region, I ain't gonna have fun exploring it.

6th) Gen IV; I just don't like many of the Pokemon, and the games were pretty mediocre. I don't like the OST very much as Cynthia's Theme is the only track I find memorable.

5th - 2nd) Gen I, II, III, VI; These gens are all pretty much the same to me. Games were great fun at their release, I like the majority of the Pokemon, tons of great music tracks. They all excelled at some things, but failed in other places. But none of them have any replay value to me, other than maybe HGSS.

1st) Gen V; Black & White were pretty mediocre, if it weren't for Black and White 2, Gen V would fall to 3rd place just behind Gen II and VI. I love the Pokedex; Gen V has a TON of my favorite Pokemon. Black and White 2 were also super fun and had A LOT to do. It also has my favorite soundtrack of any generation.

However, if I were to pick my favorite era of Pokemon in general it would be Gen I because not only were the games great for their time but the anime was awesome and Mewtwo Strikes Back is my favorite movie. Not to mention just the general 90s Pokemon hype when Pokemon was literally everywhere and everyone brought their gameboys to school.

    Le Sigh. Here we go...
FYI: Generation 2 is exempt from the list, as I have never played a Gen 2 Game. Oh, and I will be factoring in Spin-Offs.

5th) Generation I: Eh, call me crazy, but I just can't stand the old games. This is probably due to me being an impatient teenager who likes to run everywhere tho. The OG 151 just aren't my favorite mons.

4th) Generation V: BW had a great story, BW2 had the PWT, Conquest was awesome. Thats about all the redeeming qualities of this gen outside of possibly Serperior, Samurott, and Galvantula's existence. G2I was aids, BW2 was pointless, no Hoenn remake, and BW had 0 replay value.

3rd) Generation III: Hoenn has a few really cool Pokemon (looking at you Sharpedo), and it's story was good but outclassed by BW. However, XD and PMD1 exist, bumping it over Gen 5.

2nd) Generation VI: Meg-Ev was silly, but the Fairy Type is cool. What lands Gen 6 here is character customization, PSMD, and the Delta Episode. And functional breeding mechanics. And 3D. And customized characters in 3D. And 3 of the greatest pieces of music to grace the series (Lush Forest [sue me], VS Wally, VS Lorekeeper Zinnia). However, the rest of the truly great music...

1st) Generation IV: ... can be found here. Dialga's Fight to the Finish, VS Cynthia, VS Giratina, even VS Cyrus. Every dang peice in this gen was awesome. Music aside, Gen 4 introduced the greatest region (Sinnoh), the greatest pokemon, had an acceptable story [sue me], And had fucking PMD2. Add this to the fact that I still consider HGSS to be the best games in the series due to their huge selection of awesome features, and you get something I would be surprised to see beat anytime soon.

    1. Gen III/RSE - i think this is my favorite gen. imo it had the best starters, the pokemon and the region were unique and enjoyable. it was the first time the region itself had character. it was very different from kanto and johto, which to me were very basic regions with a typical layout and setting. secret bases, contests, and the frontier were really nice side additions. this was the first region that gave you other things to do than just the main story line and i really appreciated that. i think compared to other regions hoenn still is very diverse and different, it stands out among them.

    2. Gen VI/XY - i really enjoyed this gen. i think the quality of the pokemon really increased from gen V... which after gen V i was seriously afraid for any new pokemon designs. they introduced a lot fewer than before, but i think the saying quality not quantity applies here. the 3D was beautiful and made pokemon more life like than they ever were before. also the customization feature was amazing. maybe it's the girl in me (tehe) but i loved finally being able to make my character look how i wanted. also this gen introduced my favorite city ever Laverre... really wish they took it further and really got spooky with it. i'm also a big fan of fairy types and i think they brought the type in pretty well unlike the way Gen II introduced steel and dark types. only complaint is that the region was def too easy the gyms, team flare, and the champion all way too easy.

    3. Gen IV/DPPT - i'm a bit torn on how i feel about this region, idk if it's my nostalgia googles or if it really is that good to be in the top three... because i'll be honest i have not played it in a long time. As I talk about this gen I'm mainly speaking on the behalf of Platinum. I like how long of a game it was and I feel as though it was actually challenging. It has a really strong Pokemon feel to it.. the same feeling gen I and II give to me. team galactic is on par with team rocket. the members of the team actually had personality and they were interesting. the actual myths surrounding sinnoh were interesting to follow... i kind of liked how old of a region it was. Cynthia was a very worthy champion and her character was enjoyable.

    4. Gen I/RBY - my nostalgia googles are strapped on for this one. i can't lie i find the pokemon pretty flawless and the gym leaders are memorable. it's hard to really pick this gen apart because it is the first gen so it set the standard. i guess i ranked it below the halfway point because it's a bland region. it's pretty much a copy/paste of buildings that make towns and cities... but idk it's not really bad to me it just is what it is

    5. Gen II/GSC - ya know this gen is one of the gens i put the most hours into, I LOVED this gen, but overtime it just lost its luster for me. these games were very directionless to me. you were kind of just left to do what you wanted for most of the game which was nice, but also unfulfilling. i get that the region was lacking a lot of typical things because it was a conjoined region with kanto, but it left me wanting more. going back to kanto at the end was really cool, but often times by the time i got to that point i was already sick of playing. it's very similar to kanto in that the region is pretty bland and offers nothing that exciting. it's not god awful to me, but it's just meh.

    6. Gen V/BWB2W2 - okay so now that time has passed i don't hate this gen with complete disgust anymore, but i still hate it lol. there were some really bad looking pokemon in this gen. the starters were ehhh. Serperior and Samurott looked cool, but i found them to be very mediocre. I've played this gen the least, but I ditched my starter every time after a certain point. the characters in this game were so annoying. Practically everyone was annoying... B2W2 improved on this. Something about these games does not feel pokemon like. it's hard to explain, but it just doesn't feel natural? Idk this was a very weird generation for me and i often like to pretend it didn't happen, but i will say there are some very cool pokemon sprinkled into the bunch and the introduction of tms not breaking was lifesaving.

    1. Gen II. GSC have always been my favorites. I have so many fond memories of Johto, and I love the mechanics that these games added. Though I technically have more hours in some of the newer games, I feel like I put the most time and energy into gen II. Gen I started it all for me, but when I think of nostalgia, I think of Gold more than I think of Red. I'll count HG/SS in this category too, which I had a lot of fun with.

    2. Gen I. As some others have said, nostalgia definitely plays into this one, and many of my favorite Pokemon come from the original 151. For whatever reason, these games have held up quite well for me, and I'm having a great time playing gen I again. I'll also count FRLG in this category, which I enjoyed a lot.

    3. Gen 6. This is a bit of a toss-up with the next one. In some ways, I'm surprised to find myself ranking gen 6 so highly. I was annoyed when the games came out about the lack of post-game content and the limited number of new Pokemon, but these games have really grown on me. I wish they were a little better fleshed out, and I wish the story were a bit better (parts of it are cringe-worthy), but I've had a lot of fun breeding teams and training Pokemon, and the mechanics make it more doable than in the past (i.e., I don't have to sit in front of my computer with a timer and an RNG calculating program trying to figure out the exact moment to turn on my game, collect an egg, etc.). There's certainly a nostalgia element as well; parts of Kalos are very reminiscent of Kanto. I do wish the game's pacing were better (very slow to get the first two badges, which makes you think it will be a long game, followed by a much faster remainder of the story).

    4. Gen IV. I enjoyed Sinnoh a lot, though it's been a while since I played these games. What I remember these games most fondly for, though, is wifi. I recall spending many hours the first summer after they came out, setting up trades and getting a sense for the Poke-economy. These are fairly close to gen VI in terms of rank.

    5. Gen V. I wanted to love these games. I really like how BW2 have a lot of postgame content, and in general, the story in gen V was quite well developed. Unfortunately, other elements stopped me from getting as into these games as I might have. The experience point system in those games bugged me a lot, and I wasn't that fond of the gen V Pokemon (especially when it turned out I couldn't get any older Pokemon in BW until after the main story). I think I was also going through a bit of a Pokemon slump at this point, so I wasn't as invested in these games. Gen V is the only one where I've never completed a Pokedex, and at this point, I don't have that much desire to do so.

    6. Gen III. By this, I refer to the Hoenn games (which I liked relatively less than FRLG). I liked Emerald, and the ORAS games are fine, but R/S really didn't do it for me. I suppose I was bitter about cutting off access to my favorite Pokemon on Gold, and I couldn't even obtain many of the Pokemon I liked until FRLG and/or Colosseum came out a little while later. I know gen III is many people's favorite, and there seem to be more and more forumers who started with gen III these days, but those games still round out the bottom of my list. That being said, I still enjoyed them quite a bit, and there is no main series Pokemon games I consider to be bad.

If I were to include the GameCube games in gen III, the ranking would jump quite a bit, possibly to third or so (maybe fourth). I really enjoyed Colosseum and XD, and feel like they're definitely underrated these days.

    From favorite to least favorite:

    1. Gen 4, I started of in Gen 4 and that was all I had at the time, I finished Diamond multiple times and this was the first generation in which I completed the Pokedex, shoutout to my old Infernape <3
    2. Gen 2, I like Gen 2 a lot, because it was really cool when I found out that you could travel back to Kanto. The epic final battle on Mt. Silver gave me chills all over and I just found it really enjoyable overall
    3. Gen 1, Although I despise the graphics of this generation, I found it pretty enjoyable overall, such as most Pokémon games. The only minus point is.... Koga's Muk.... Do you even know how many time I failed that gym.... just because of a Muk. ._.
    4. Gen 6, ORAS was a total hype for me but X and Y kind of, ruined Gen 6 in my opinion. I plainly don't like the Pokemons added in X and Y (Exceptions are Aegislash and Greninja). And the game was WAY to easy.
    5. Gen 3, I don't like Gen 3 at all, but neither do I dislike it. Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald as well as the the Kanto remakes made me go "Mehh..." and that's not really positive.
    6. Gen 5, Ugh where do I even start about Gen 5. I don't like the story of N at all I don't know how other people do, the Pokemons in this Gen are just... No (Only exception is Haxorus), they also introduced the THIRD fire/fighting starter in a row -_-. The only thing Gen 5 has coming for itself is the world tournament, just because the other Champions and Gym Leaders who WERE enjoyable are in there.
