[Event] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Well, updating on my run, I got 5 of the pokémon for my team before Roxanne, leveled them all up to the level cap, but Jenna ended up soloing her anyways, so it didn't matter much, I'm playing on Hard mode, so no items in battle

This is my team right after beating Roxanne and grabbing my first badge, the soft lvl cap doesn't stop exp gain, just halves it, so Jenna ended up leveling during the fight
[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Brawly wasn't as easy, I didn't level up all my team to the lvl cap, so he's Heracross (lvl 20) reckt my team using knock off, bullet seed and arm thrust, luckily I had Scarlet to save the day
[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

GYM 1:
I took the bite and traded a Ralts for the Seedot because finding that 1% with my luck is impossible, it made for a pretty fun challenge added into the mix actually! I left the Ralts in the PC and skipped trainers until I got to Rustboro where I backtrack to defeat every trainer using Seedot, having taught him the Bullet Seed TM. When DOTS got to level 10, the disobey mechanic happened but it became a fun 'coinflip game' where I would click Bide and see if Seedot/Nuzleaf would listen or choose another move (preferably Bullet Seed)

I entered the Roxanne fight on the level limit (15) and it took me two chances since DOTS wasn't listening much the first time and Comet couldn't hold up againts the Nosepass but on the second try, he got 4 bullet seed, KOing the Geodudes and taking down the Nosepass after a few more roulette spins

Now to change DOTS' name to fit the theme of my team

Unfortunately, you will need a save editor to do that. It counts as a traded Pokemon, and can't be re-nicknamed in-game.

Here's an update on the team as I'm about to enter Petalburg Woods. Yes, I thought it was a lot later at night than it actually was.

Bulma the Ralts is Lv 10 and has only Confusion and Growl.

Shu the Poochyena is Lv 8 and has Tackle and Howl.

Yamcha the Lotad just reached level 7 and therefore now has Astonish, Growl, and Absorb.

Grinding for the first Youngster (particularly without Mudkip) was a drag. I settled on Lv 7 Ralts / Lv 6 Poochyena / Lv 5 Lotad because this team wasn't great for grinding Ralts up to her first attacking move. (Astonish is largely ineffective against Poochyena and outright useless against Zigzagoon, etcetera, and I just wasn't having fun spamming Tackle.) I used Growl a few times against Youngster Calvin's Poochyena, and then I switched into my own Poochyena. I used Howl a couple times and then overwhelmed the opposing Poochyena with sheer strength. None of the fights since then have been particularly challenging. (I got lucky with a critical hit against that acursed enemy Seedot on the beach. Bide has tripped me on at that spot a few times.)

I have plans for Shu the Poochyena despite the limited move pool. First and foremost, I'm going to teach it Return, but I think when I checked it via save editor, it also has Hidden Power Poison with 68 base power. (For the uninititated, I use the save editor to check things, not to change things.) I'm not sure Hidden Power Poison will stay all the way through the League, but it will be fairly powerful when I get access to it from that one shop in Slateport sometime between gyms 3 and 4.

Anyway, grinding aside, I'm diggin' the team. I can't think of a better way to spend a Thursday night than playing Gen 3 Pokemon. Hmm? The Game Awards? What?

Well... After a not so easy fight against Watson, I finally got the 3rd badge, I literally battled every trainer I had access to at this point to level up my team, and it was still a dramatic fight, thankfully Paola is Super Effective against 2 of his pokémon, and Scarlet resists electric attacks, otherwise I would probably have lost

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

This is my team after the battle with Watson

With all the prep I did to run the challenge, I hardly had enough time to actually play. Just beat N in Accumula town recently, and I'll have a full update once I beat Cress tomorrow.

Janp (Sapphire): You're heading to Sapphire's Hoenn, and your Secret Delibird has selected a Sceptile, Gyarados, Aggron, Altaria, Flygon, and Armaldo for you. Two of these Pokemon are Dragon-types, two more are in the Dragon egg group. Aggron and Armaldo might not fit the theme, but they're both used in the team of Hoenn's champion, Steven, and can propel you to the championship as well! Your team is very defensively balanced, but you still need to look out for Rock and Ice-types! Three Pokemon in your team are weak to both types, and you have two quadruple weaknesses to Ice. Thankfully, you have an Aggron to resist both types.
Okay, this team is quite the surprise. I like that it's mostly dragon-themed. Sceptile gets Dragon-typing in Mega form, Gyarados is fake dragon and I guess Aggron and Armaldo could also pose as dragons. They kinda look like Godzilla, which (according to some sources) could be considered a dragon. I'm just wondering, why I got this team. What exactly in my post made my Scrambler make this team. Maybe the mention of "veteran". Dragon-types are usually considered as hard to master in the lore, so maybe that's why? Or maybe it has something to do with the Pokémom Champions?

I really like the team nonetheless. It feels like my run will be pretty straightforward, with some good Pokémon for each part of the game. I'm looking forward to it.

The Secret Delibird Challenge in Pokémon Sapphire

:grovyle:

Okay, let's start this dragon run. To stay in-theme, I decided to nickname my Pokémon after Targaryens.

I quickly got Treecko as my starter and named him after the very first Targaryen king - Aegon I. It's time to conquer the whole region.

Aegon I got fairly overleveled on my way through tutorial and evolved right before facing Roxanne. I think I'll have to skip some trainers in my next segment or keep Aegon I on bench, while I level up other team members.

The battle with Roxanne was easy, since I had a type advantage and was overleveled. I taught Bullet Seed to Aegon I and burried Roxanne's rocks under tons of seeds.

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

I'm looking forward the next part. I'll get Aaron and Magikarp. None of them are effective against Brawly, so that should be fun.

Team

:grovyle:
Aegon I, Naughty Male Grovyle
lvl 17, Overgrow
- Bullet Seed
- Pursuit
- Quick Attack
- Fury Cutter

Suggestions:

Robin could be Dragalge, for reasons that would spoil Awakening for new players.
Spoiler:

Byleth could be Malamar. Byleth is a teacher and Malamar is a very intelligent Pokemon.

Corrin could be Drifblim. Drifloon, Drifblim's pre-evo, is known for attempting to kidnap children in its Pokedex entries, and Corrin, as a child, was kidnapped from Hoshido to be raised in Nohr.

We also had a forum user who used Corrin as a screen-name, but she died recently, and it would be a nice thought to bring a Ghost-type named after her through Kalos in her honor.

That leaves Shez as Barbaracle. Not really sure if that fits anything since I know nothing about them.
Well, thanks for the suggestions. And about Shez, I'd say the way they dual-wield their swords kinda strikes me as the closest analogy to Binacle's two "arms". Barbaracle, though, I'm not 100% sure.

Now, onto my actual run:

Secret Delibird in Kalos (Y edition)

  • Chapter 1: Solo Bunny

For this particular challenge, I'm playing as a boy named Kiran -- named after the protagonist of FE Heroes. Had to roll with Froakie for my, er, "starter" until I got my bunny. That is, Kris the Bunnelby, named after the knight of Altea. I then breezed through Santalune Forest and made my way to Santalune City where I took Viola on with Kris on the verge of leveling up to 13. Honestly though, her Vivillon's Infestation was annoying. I had to burn through my potions just to get by -- what with Kris mainly relying on Tackle-fest.

Fast forward to Lumiose City, I finally met Professor Sycamore in his lab. Believe it or not, he actually fought me with his set of Kanto starters. Not that hard with Kris at level 14-15 at this point. He then had me pick one of these mons. And which one did I choose? Charmander. Not that I'll use it (and the Froakie from earlier, for that matter), but the two starter mons could work as my HM buddies, hence me letting them level up and evolve via Exp. Share while having Kris do most (if not all) of the fighting.

ooooo yay!!!! thank you for my team and game, i am very excited to play, especially as someone has put in Lunatone and I love using Lunatone <3

@Explorer of Time I just want to confirm - for the 4 mons I have to hack in, am I OK to do that immediately so that I essentially will start with those mons immediately (first stages obviously)?

You are OK to do so immediately, as first-stages. They should be level 5, like your starter. You may pick their nature, gender, and ability, but they need a moveset of that of a level 5 wild Pokemon of their species to start with (i.e. no Egg Moves) and no EVs.

Update 2: Misty

Current Team: :squirtle::pidgey::vulpix::trapinch:
Cupid (Squirtle), Dasher (Pidgey), Vixen (Vulpix), and Rudolph (Trapinch)

Level limit: 21 (Starmie)

Crawled through the route after Pewter City. Dislikes the number of things that can poison you there. Ran back to the Pokemon Center at least three times.

Delved through Mt. Moon. Used Pokemon beside Cupid a surprising amount. Remembered a lot more Geodudes in there. Still evolved Cupid to Wartortle.

Beat up the Grinch shortly after exiting Mt. Moon. Ended up in the red on at least two Pokemon. No faints once again. Dislikes how often Vixen is getting criticaled, though.

Evolved Dasher to Pidgeotto on Nugget Bridge. Wishes it got Wing Attack earlier than 27. Would have been a decent option for Misty.

Figured Rudolph must learn an offensive Ground move by level-up soon. Used Bite until now. Learned a new move at 17: Faint Attack. (Looking) 25 for Sand Tomb. Vaguely remembered seeing that as the first Ground move. Dig at 41. Yikes. (Does not learn that as Vibrava either. Awkward.) Remedies that with a Dig TM, of course, but still.

New party member time. Caught four Oddishes.

Oddish #1: Level 14. Bold nature. 38/17/23/26/26/15.
Oddish #2: Level 12. Sassy nature. 34/19/21/24/25/12.
Oddish #3: Level 13. Hardy nature. 37/19/20/26/22/15.
Oddish #4: Level 13. Careful nature. 36/18/19/23/25/14.

Picks #2. Remembers having the last Bellossom as Bold. Will not nearly the same tools as last time (Quiver Dance, Strength Sap). Named this one Dancer, for obvious reasons.

Where is there a Sun Stone, anyways? ...Ruin Valley, on Six Island. Aw. Is not surprised, as a non-Kanto stone. Comes after Blaine, though. Wanted Bellossom to win that fight. Stands a lot better chance than Gloom with a 95 base stat point difference.

Thinking ahead: what is Dancer's trajectory? Could do a Swords Dance set with Sleep Powder, Double Team, and Sludge Bomb. Feels way too slow for that. Is not keen on a Sunny Day + Solar Beam set for similar reasons, even with Chlorophyll. (Technically pairs okay-ish with a weak Hidden Power Fire.) Hates how awful Grass moves are in this generation. Maybe Giga Drain, Sleep Powder, Double Team, and Secret Power/Sludge Bomb?

Caught a Meowth below Cerulean City for its Pickup ability. Kind of wants a Hidden Power TM. Stands a pretty low chance of getting it (5%), but not impossible.

Tangled with some tougher trainers around Vermilion City. Had some faints around there. Is not bothered when nonsense like Sonicboom and confusion is involved.

Returned to Misty with everyone at 21. Has two fine options between Dancer (now Gloom) and Cupid (with Bite). What dumb plan can happen here instead? Dares not pit Rudolph or Vixen against a Starmie. Presumes that to be an easy one-shot (assuming it actually chooses Water Pulse). Leaves Dasher. How many Quick Attacks would it take to win? Guesses...four? Notes Swift on Starmie, stopping Sand Attack gambling. (Might shift its AI away from Water Pulse for someone else, though?) Fears base 75 Attack less than base 100 Special Attack (and STAB). Sure.

Beat Staryu in two hits with Dasher. Took one Water Pulse from Starmie for a lot of damage (maybe 27 damage out of Dasher's team-leading 64 hitpoints). Could not stay in to see if Starmie wanted to use Swift now. Opted to not take the faint risk and switched to Dancer. Chose Water Pulse, so a good decision. (Read someone's experience of usually seeing Hardens. Noooope.) Favored Swift after that, though, as a higher damage move.

Brought down Starmie with some Sleep Powders and Absorbs. Whines about at yet another one-turn sleep after sitting in several four-turn sleeps earlier. Made up for it with two Absorb criticals. About time. Swears on getting out-criticaled two or three to one.

_________

Update 3: Surge

Level limit: 24

Cleared the way to the SS Anne already. Remarks on getting a surprising amount of mileage from Rudolph's Hyper Cutter. Faced the bulk of Intimidates somehow.

Fought the Grinch quickly. Went pretty well. Beat Pidgeotto and Raticate with Dasher. One-shot Kadabra with Rudolph's Dig (at the cost of most of its own health). Confused Ivysaur into hitting itself three times in a row.

Is this the good luck update? Scored two critical Embers for Vixen on one trainer.

More confirmation of the good luck update: Up to something like six straight on hitting themselves in confusion. Dodged three straight Supersonics on Rudolph on the next trainer.

Leveled everyone to 24. Opened the lock to Surge reasonably quick. Could just use Rudolph and Dig to victory. Boring. Cannot not test Vixen's luck right now. Should, by all rights, fare poorly against this gym. Does not have good stats as just a Vulpix. Gave it an Oran Berry, courtesy of Meowth's Pickup. Should not get paralyzed by anything.

Began the fight well by making Voltorb hit itself Turn 1. Snapped out on Turn 2. Got an Ember burn, on the plus side. (Realized now that Surge does have Thunder Wave on two Pokemon. Somehow missed that.) Should have re-applied Confuse Ray. Ended up taking several Sonicbooms. Healed to try to get some extra hitpoints for Raichu later. Beat Voltorb. Defeated Pikachu without taking damage.

Fell apart on Raichu, sadly. Landed Confuse Ray through a Double Team. Fainted on a critical Shock Wave the next turn. Turned it over to Rudolph to one-shot with Dig. Knew the likely result. Hoped for better. Ah well. Expected the criticals to roll back in on the #1 critical target sooner or later.

Calculated the damage on that critical Shock Wave: 85.7 - 101.7%. Was at 73% health at the time. Would have fainted every time. (Forgot about the -Special Defense nature, also. Faints with a neutral nature too, however.) Does not exactly have great stats, as mentioned earlier (base 38 hitpoints and base 65 Special Defense).

Already opened the calculator, so approximately how bad would Starmie have gone? 5 in 8 chance of a one-shot on Vixen and a guaranteed one-shot against Rudolph (also not helped by the -Special Defense nature). Checks out.

Well, after some horrendous hours of grinding, I'm back with a new update, Finally beat Flannery and got the 4th badge, it was much harder than I expected, cuz... Well it's a Sun team, water attacks end up getting weakened, and she has a Flareon with Trop Kick, a grass type move

I ended up finding a Linking Cord at Lannetes home, when going to Meteor Falls, and besides my 2 choices, I opted to evolve Miley first, not that it mattered much, they're move sets are horrible yet lol

:croconaw:Jenna lvl 29, ability: Torrent, nature: Adamant, moves: Crunch, Waterfall, Ice Fang, Scratch

:kadabra: Britney lvl 28, ability: Inner Focus, Nature: Modest, Moves: Confusion, Psybeam, Shock Wave, Psycho Cut

I have "optimal" natures on all of them, because there's a mint shop in the game, and the mints aren't that expensive, so I ended changing the Natures of a few of them

From Flannery to Norman, there's nothing much to do, so I went to the desert, battled everyone there, and then directly to the Next gym, Battled all the trainers in the gym, and beat Norman much easier than I expected, with only Scarlet(Breloom) being knocked out, by a Counter from Normans Slacking

My last update for today, I ended finding another Linking Cord in the Weather Institute, so now my whole team is in Last stage, the fight with Winona was quiet easy, even with me being underleveled, the level cap was 36, my strongest Pokemon was at level 34 during the gym fight, and I didn't even need to use all of them
About the team, so far, it's a very solid team, none of the pokémon is being too outstanding individually, but overall I have a very good coverage, specially with me using tms always that I have them available to change up my movesets and I even managed to buy 1 ability patch to change Scarlets ability to Technician

Chapter 1 - Aspertiarations!

Annnnd we're off! Firstly we grab our starter from Bianca (obviously Oshawott always Oshawott), before immediately benching it for our ACTUAL besties for the run! Please welcome Pollux the Shroomish, Siegon the Whismur, Creta the Shinx and Tellusia the Squirtle! These were very generously gifted to me by [REDACTED].

With that, it was time to set off on our grand adventure... and straight into the EV grind. I was wanting Attack and Speed EVs on my eventual Breloom and it just so happens that Route 19 has Patrat and Purrloin encounters, which made this a perfect spot! After doing a little stat-boosting with Pollux, I decide to go to the nearby Ranch and spend way too much time playing with the Mareep... and I guess save a Herdier...

Once finished there, it's back to Aspertia to take on the first Gym Leader! I decided to use this as another EV and levelling opportunity for Creta this time, who had just learned Spark and Charge and therefore manages to easily clear the entire Gym on its own, earning our first Badge - the Basic Badge!

And with that, I've come to a stop for now but will definitely be putting a lot more time in soon!

Secret Delibird - Rich Boy Noël
Update 1 (Nuvema Town -> Striation Gym)

Time to start my own challenge! I really like this team, for the most part. I had to hack in everything but Sawsbuck, as well as hack in a Razor Fang and Up-Grade since both are locked behind the postgame. Both Gligar and Porygon were evolved ASAP, becoming Gliscor and Porygon2 at level 6, but almost everyone just has their earliest level-up moves for now. Only Porygon forgot something, in its case replacing Conversion, which had never been used, with Psybeam.

For my character this challenge, I'm never not going to give my character a name that's a pun on the challenge theme, so he's named Noel since it's the holiday season. He's a recent immigrant to Unova's Undella Town, originally from Lumiose City in Kalos, and he brought his team of five with him. For a trainer class, I settled on Rich Boy since he must be wealthy to already have a team of five before he even started on his Pokemon journey.

N's battle in Accumula was easy. Starly used Growl a lot to shut down Purrloin's attack, but it got two crits and KOed Starly. Thankfully, I had four more Pokemon and Staryu easily took down Purrloin.

Bianca's battle in Route 2 was easy as well. Starly got hit and Leered twice by Lillipup, but survived and took it down. I picked Tepig as my "starter" so it couldn't be used against me, so Bianca had Snivy, which beat Starly, then got defeated by Gliscor's weak-but-super-effective Poison Stings, the first of which poisoned it.

Cheren's battle in Striation was also on the easier side, though his Oshawott did crit and faint Staryu early on. Thankfully, Porygon2 took Oshawott down with Psybeam, set up a Sharpen, and swept Purrloin as well with Tackle.

Cress, however, was quite difficult since his Panpour had a big level advantage. Torchic nearly 3HKOed Lillipup, but got 3HKOed by it with Tackle. Cress used his potion on it, but my Starly criticaled with a Quick Attack and KOed it the next turn.

Cress sent out his Panpour, set up a single Work Up and 2HKOed Starly, taking a third of its HP in damage. I switched to Gliscor and used Sand Attack to reduce Panpour's accuracy, but Panpour 2HKOed that too. I switched to Porygon2, and Panpour criticaled with a Water Gun and nearly KOed it. Thankfully, Panpour used another Work Up and missed its next move thanks to Sand Attack, allowing Porygon2 to KO it with three Psybeams.
