    Do you use complex words in order to appear more intelligent? Do you know people who use those kind of words, even though they have no idea what they mean? Are you one of those people?

    I don't use complex words online because I think I sound more intelligent when I spell things properly. I have a large vocabulary but I spell like an elementary aged kid :/ I'm more of a math and science person anyway.
     
    I've always had a thing for longer words, not to appear smarter than others, but rather because they seem more appealing to me \: Although I don't use words that no one would understand, rather I probably use synonyms to words that could be said in an easier fashion. This is especially evident in my essay writing; I've always hated using personal pronouns in essays so whenever I can use big words in them, I reap them for they're worth XD
     
    I've always used big words. I found a fanfiction that I wrote when I was about 11 the other day and I one of the characters had smiled "sadisticly". Sure, I spelled it wrong, but I was shocked that I even knew that word at that age.

    I don't feel like my vocabulary is particularly large because I use it every day but I've heard it is.
     
    I only use big words when someone makes me mad because they call me stupid or something so I start using my entire dictionary to insult them and the majority of it gets lost on them because they use simple words and can't even use/spell those right half of the time. And a lot of my exes who are ♥♥♥♥♥es try to use big words on me by putting whatever they're typing to me into a word editor to put synonyms of words in for other words usually turning whatever they're trying to say into some incomprehensible mess because it substitutes a word in for every word even if it doesn't make sense or need to be substituted.
     
    I use words because I understand their meaning and speak in a fairly consistent manner unless I'm particularly provoked or perturbed. I actually obtained this manner of speaking through writing essays in college and reading many field guides and other scientific works. It ends up having a dry but intelligent sounding prose, I suppose. I don't really consciously think about trying to sound intelligent; honestly, if I type like a moron, it will irritate me.
     
    I tend to use bigger words in text rather than in speech. So for example I would use a bigger and more "professional" words in an essay rather than while I'm talking to my best friend. If I don't know what a word means, I'll either look it up and find out what it means or I won't use it.
     
    I can use big words, but I decide not to. I think if you constantly use big words, you might be trying too hard to sound smart. The only time I'll ever use big words is when I'm yelling at someone, or trying to make them feel dumb. It doesn't happen often, as I don't like to do those things, but it has happened before.
     
    I remember posting a thread regarding this topic at the Discussions & Debates section. I avoid using simple words and try using a more complex vocabulary whenever I type my messages or speak irl. This is basically because of how people use to talk in jargon words back in the old days, and how it's also a necessity in regards to being part of politics. In addition, it's a solution on decreasing the number of people with low intelligence by abandoning simple vocabulary and speak in archaic format, as shown from these following images.
     
    weirdly I tend to use more big words when I'm speaking as opposed to texting or typing or something. there's no real reason for it, nor am I making a conscious effort to do it. I rather like it though.

    No, it makes me laugh when I see it. In most cases I think if you're trying too hard by using complex synonyms, then it's to compensate for something. Anybody can use an online thesaurus or drop a word they learnt in school the other day.
     
    I use more intricate words when trying to debate or write a thoughtful post, but not to intentionally "sound smart," just to effectively get my point across.
     
    It's not the size that matters; it's how you use it.

    ie: I'll just use whatever words I see fit for purpose. Simples.
     
    Communication is making the listener understand your thoughts accurately. I keep things as simple as I can, and use common words as much as possible.
     
    I personally don't use big words, because, well, I sort dislike them; whatever I say comes naturally from my mind. If there's any word that you rarely see used, chances of you seeing me using it would be very unlikely. :] Only time I'd ever use them is when writing something that requires their usage, such as some form an important paper. I see a few people use complicated words here and there, and that kind of... annoys me, unfortunately, haha. Since I'm not very used to them, they make things harder for me to understand. I am able to figure out what they're trying to get across, but it takes more time than it actually should, which I don't really like.

    I never use longer words for the sake of using a long word; but only when they're useful for getting a point across. I just say what comes naturally.

    I tend to use simple words in an English conversation, and I don't know any big words in my own native.

    But when my and my siblings goes all scientific, especially regarding Physics... Whoa there, I need a good word for this conversation.

    The next thing I know I'm using somewhat big words in this post lol

    I find debate novel topics super fun and if you have to stop to ask what a word means you lose. If you can't think of the right word, you lose.
    So yeah you get pretty good at words.
