Smart words make me sound more photosynthesis.

I try to use simple words, but often get stuck mid sentence, because for some odd reason I simply lose track and even forget words. So in order to somehow finish the sentence I try to improvise which often leads to strange constructs, often containing older expressions.

That happens quite often especially on internet plattforms. Every time I reread my sentences I just think "What monster did I just create (again)?" xD

I use "notwithstanding" any chance I get. I think the fact that it sounds smart is just a fringe benefit, though. I don't use it because of that, I use it because it's an awesome word.

I use 'big' words simply because any other educated speaker of English ought to know them.
It's not about being smart, it's about saying exactly what one means.

I rarely say "big" words, I prefer using the simple ones and I think it's due to the fact I'm not that in English :p

But when my and my siblings goes all scientific, especially regarding Physics... Whoa there, I need a good word for this conversation.

Haha, I like to use the long, and winded terms that I learned during my studies in psychology on people c: Makes me feel like I know my stuff, but in actuality I probably wouldn't be able to explain most of the concepts XD I have an issue with using big words, but then not being able to explain the definition to people \:

[PokeCommunity.com] Smart words make me sound more photosynthesis.

I seriously can't believe we went through this entire thread and no one thought to post this gif.

I naturally know numerous lengthy words because English is my favorite subject. Also I use Google a lot.

Uh no. lol. I try to keep things simple and understandable, especially in verbal conversations. I generally sound a lot more intelligent in writing than I do when speaking.

I'll use whatever word that I come up with first that suits the situation like every normal human being does. Naturally I don't think to use big words so I don't use big words, as simple as.

I think my vocabulary is pretty alright, only time I would use big words is because I wouldn't know an alternative word that is more simple :P

Also... when trying to explain people why their car needs fixing and they don't understand car mechanic language.... it's hell :(

Spoiler:

Anyone that uses long complex words frequently will eventually be compared to the above in my eyes. You have been warned.

The only time I've ever purposefully done this is when I've used a word so many times in one post that I look up synonyms for it, and usually choose the most complex word available, haha. Otherwise, whatever I know in my head, I'll use. Personally consider myself relatively well spoken, but at times, and this is even more the case when I'm tired or posting at a late hour, my vocabulary probably seems to be lacking. d:

Whenever I use complex words (or "words for fancy-pantses", as I like to call them), I always look up synonyms or their actual definitions so I know what they mean. I do it to broaden my vocabulary and to avoid being repetitive (i.e., using the same word or word combo over and over again). However, I don't use them too frequently, otherwise I'd feel like I were a pompous erudite.

I prefer using simple words. It's quick and too the point, no BS included. I'll catch myself from time to time trying to use bigger words around certain people/communities. Which often gets me tongue-tied and rambling. I'm not smart enough for that.

Sounds really unnatural when I do that, though. I don't usually use a word until I've heard someone else pronounce it three to four times. I'm weird like that.

I don't make a conscious effort over what words I use - I use those that come to mind and best suit my requirements.

I tend to unconsciously pick up the use of language off my peers and from reading books. I've been reading a lot of classics the last couple years (free out of copyrights on my ereader - booyah!) and the language as crept into the way I speak. My husband called me out on it one time. However this wasn't necessarily an increase in the use of large words but an increase in the use of particular words and the arrangement of my sentences.

I like the word betwixt, but this out-dated gem hasn't made it into my vocabulary yet.

I'm not gonna use words that I don't understand. I don't see the point in acting intelligent. But obviously if I'm writing essays, which I have to do all the time, I'm gonna use long words to make my writing more interesting.

I use big words when they concisely express what I'm trying to convey. If the only alternative is using like, 10 smaller words, obviously the bigger word is the better choice :P

On the other hand, it's a little silly when people do it to sound intelligent (except like Charlotte said, if it's for a report or an essay or something, trying to sound intelligent is understandable xD)

Like Gold warehouse I follow the Orwellian school of writing. Usually longer words have a narrower definition and it's inappropriate to use them when you're talking about something more general because you're ascribing whatever you're talking about with connotations that might not be there.

I try to avoid using words I don't actually understand so I don't look like an idiot. I did use a lot of big words for a long time now, but they gradually slipped out of my vocabulary as I got more and more tired of having to explain what they meant.

When writing an assignment though, I practically spam overly-technical jargon and long words that I'm 90% sure most of my lecturers probably didn't understand. Anyone who says "using big words won't improve your grades" is lying.
