It's absurd, but it makes sense in some way. It sucks for some more popular games like the older Pokemon games, but at the same time a lot of people either have copies already, are willing to pay, or willing to emu. Especially with how collecting has taken over retro gaming, it really creates a big wall for people like me who have wanted the whole "experience as it was meant to be" thing and can't because holy crap it's 500$ just to be able to play one game.

They could just continue the VC thing they did with RBY and GSC on the 3DS.
Dunno if those were all code-in-a-box, but the Crystal VC I have was. Pity they'll become unplayable if you don't download it before 3DS online shuts down though.

I am quite mixed on digital games. In all honesty, it's easier to get deals with them, but on consoles, you might risk that after a new console generation, not every game passes to the new console, so you're stuck with a game on an older console. That happens with physical games too of course. I read though that on some stores when you purchase a game, you're not technically buying the game (it's more like you're renting it), so if people decide to remove the game from that digital store, your game is gone. Do your research to see how true is that. I personally wasn't interested enough to check more sources.
So, i'll be honest and say that for these reasons, Steam is probably the best service.

One of the good things about Steam is that you keep any games you buy in your library, even if they are pulled from the store later on.
I got like a dozen games in my Steam library that I can still download and play that aren't available in the Steam store anymore =D

You are right. But if Steam closes one day, the games don't belong to us. It's written in their terms of use :(

I think I read it as "you don't buy the game, you just buy a license to play the game". However, it also needs to be said that marketing very much suggests that buying is owning. At least in the past it did due to these types of services not existing. This change in the industry is something we have to thank the proprietary software market to thank for. They've been doing these practices for way longer than games did.

The difference being that open source software exists. Whereas with games it's a lot harder to find that niche. ^^"

Funnily enough, some games on Steam are actually DRM free. So, if you install it you can copy it whereever and continue using it even if Steam isn't available.
