The "it's quiet" remark was about how no one here is talking and are just just posting numbers.

Yes, 'cause it will only be 0OF tomorrow morning as opposed to -10OF this morning.

They close school at -10F in your district? My school only ever did 2 hour late starts even if it was -20F even with windchills of -40F. The Superintendents my district had when I was in school never closed school unless it was state mandated or if the head of the bus company they contract said his buses couldn't drive in the conditions forecast or currently happening.

And I'm staying home on Wednesday and Thursday, because it's supposed to go all the way down to -20OF both days. And the wind chill is supposed to be -40OF...

Where the heck is that cold patch coming from that's causing it to drop that low where you are those days? It's forecast to be -14 tomorrow morning and then -8 Thursday morning here, and I'm about 2 or 3 hours north of the MN-IA border. Granted, I'm near Minneapolis and not way out in the western prairies of the state, where Pipestone is currently at -6, but still!

EDIT: see attachment for windchills here Wednesday. -37 does not figure to be fun, but at least it's not -50.

While you're all freezing, down in Australia it's 100 degrees Fahrenheit! I honestly prefer the cold over heat because it's much easier to get warm in the cold than it is to cool down when it's hot. In the cold you can just go in a warm bed, put on some comfy thick clothes, put on the heater system, put on the fireplace, have some hot cocoa, etc.
Also cold allows for fun snow if you're in the right place, but unfortunately in most urban areas of Australia it does not snow :(.

And we just got our first snow of the winter.

My city is considerably far from the MN-IA border, so it's not as cold here as it would be in a town right on the border. And no, they didn't cancel school or delay it yesterday, but they did delay it today 'cause of the 7 inches of snow we got yesterday, a lot of which was not totally plowed. And they are definitely canceling it tomorrow and Thursday, 'cause of the -40 range wind chills.

Ew, 7 inches. All we got was an additional coating of maybe an inch or two and then oodles of black ice on the roads, which is a different kind of mess.

And yet my 10 year old sister's school day was not canceled or delayed, which I think was a terrible decision, especially since a sizable number of the high school students in the district drive in from distances greater than 5 miles out via country roads.

You say this, but you'd probably sing a different tune if you had the weather that's here right now for any period longer than a day. It's true you can typically add enough layers to compensate, but at that point the limiting becomes mobility and visibility. With the windchill levels we had here this morning, frostbite sets in within 15 minutes for exposed skin, and with tomorrow's, it'll be somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes.

And I know 100F is definitely not fun. I roast in anything above 85F unless it's a dry heat.

It didn't even snow at all in December, and then 2015 comes, and hey, 7 inches of snow just for you!

It hasn't snowed much here lately. We maybe got over an inch last night, and barely any of it stuck.
