Well it seems Gen VII will be here in time for my eventual Einrík mafia game

So, might I suggest something? What if we actually remove the small games and large games separation and just limit all games to 25-30 players? Maybe separate the queue in a different manner?

I was thinking that if we limit all games to 25-30 players, we could have like 6 separate queues, where you can put games in an alternating way like,

Queue 1: Touhou Project
Queue 2: Merlin
Queue 3: Fullmetal Alchemist
Queue 4: Mafia Madness: Chains
Queue 5: His Return
Queue 6: MCM Scratched

Then

Queue 1: Community Mafia
Queue 2: Survivor Underground

and so on and so forth

It would be definitely faster, and for each slot, you have one queue for it, and now you only need to wait for that game to finish for your game to go next.

What do you think guys?

If we limited all games to 25-30 players

I would stop GMing

but you do you

The problem is that only a few games have ever reached the 40 mark, and even if they did, most of those who joined wither away for inactivity.

I just stated 25-30 because it is in between the current small size and the large size games, but ofcourse the the limits could be debatable

Pretty sure how the queue works is fine - small/large. There's absolutely no reason to complicate it or make things harder. The larger games aren't doing as well these days with activity, while the small games are doing much better. It'd be counterproductive to our process (which really isn't that bad) to go adding in weird queue obligations and static numbers. Some games get very active and popular, others less so. Arbitrary numbers won't help that.

No matter what rules/restrictions you set up, you will always have the problem that people might go inactive, it's just unavoidable. As long as the large games are still larger than the small games I don't see a need to merge the two queues. Let's just take a look on how the new system will work out.

30 players is a pretty generous number considering games with 30+ players have about 5 or so flakeouts later in the game :x

Thirty players isn't generous at all.

If you have a game with fifty players and five go inactive, that's still forty-five players. And that doesn't factor in replacements the GM might make.

You also have to realize that there's various factors that might make someone want to join a game, including its theme, mechanics, projected size and who GMs it, as well as their personal life and availability.

Okay, I get what you are saying but please, was there even a game that reached the 50 mark? I don't think RI or GAU got that far, I think. Even if they did, thats like 1-2 games out of about dozens of games that we've hosted.

Anyways, it seems everyone is against merging the game sizes, so that's out of the question, but what about the 1 queue for the 6 slots? It probably may or may not be an idea to consider :x

Imagine getting stuck in a queue with a snaily GM, or a game that is guaranteed to last a loooong time. You'd be gutted, it would be way more unfair than it is now.

While we're suggesting things,

I'd like to suggest a new queue for a game size smaller than the small games. Like a classic EM game size, 7-10ish. The games would probably last about a week or two, instead of a month or two. They would be a good way for beginners to learn how to play, and also allow for new people to try out GMing before jumping into a larger game. I also think smaller games would be easier for new players to understand, and playing a bunch of them "really fast" , compared to a larger forum game, would allow them to get the basics down quicker. I know these games could be put in the current small games queue but the 20 player games would last a lot longer than a 7-10 player game.

By EM style, you mean similar to Beginner's? Roles+Actions without all the added bits and pieces?

I'm certainly up for people hosting games in that style, for a small group of people, but I think a "once/twice a month" rule might work better in this case, rather than constant switch overs.

I would like to see Wiz's idea tested for sure. Especially because if it goes through, I'll be highly tempted to convert DotA Mafia into that format and simplify it out. Moreso since it'll be my first game I'm hosting :')

Do you think a game like that would be worth making for only 10 people? I know it might seem easier to grasp the format but it'll be over before you know it. For these short games its probably best if they're deadly simple, fast-paced and as undemanding on the GM as possible.

If anyone is interested in hosting an EM style game in March, drop me a message. Not promising anything but if there are willing hosts then maybe we can try something.
