Tug o' War Pokémon edition

Really glad you liked the idea FCG! ^^ Though it looks like we'll be goin' against each other on this one. :p I've spent too much time shiny hunting in Gen 9 not to lol.

I could vote for either.
If we're talking about the game's mechanics then gen 9 wins easily with how much of a buggy mess gen 1 was and gen 9 just having better QoL features.
That said if I go by the Pokemon themselves which to me are the most important part, I'd go with gen 1 as gen 9 just doesn't have as much Pokemon that I like.

Red is the one in which I caught Zapdos just by Burning it with my Charizard's Flamethrower, then a few Ultraballs!
Sleep status ? Paralyzed status ? Lowering stats ? Balls who catch better in the dark, or in water, or heavy Pokémon, or lower levels, or quickly, or after lots of turns, or making happy, etc... ? No need! ^^

I lack any nostalgia for Gen 1. (born too late and missed it).

However my issue is less to do with Gen 1, and more that I don't like Kanto as a region. When I played it later, it felt like a massive trainer gauntlet without much breaking the monotony in between.

Gen 2 and Gen 3/Gen 4 kanto have the same issues.

If we're talking about just which of the two had better Pokemon overall, I still think Gen 9 has it for me. Gen 1 has a lot of really great Pokemon originating from it and Gen 9 doesn't have that many that truly wow me, but the ones that do are some of my favorites now, and it also gave me my favorite starter in the series. (now if we were comparing literally any Gen's Pokemon with the ones released in Gen 3, Gen 3 would always win for me lol, it had so many cool Pokemon)

I will always remember how happy I was to finally get the Red version one morning, and how it also made me forget the previous night, an awful, unpleasant, sleepless one in which I was sick.

I'm sorry you had such a bad night before that FCG... But I'm glad you got something you enjoyed so much right after it. 106 for making your bad night into a good day!

I liked how you could go into everyone's houses, and talk to all the npcs in the old games, plus the pokemon center was a cozy little building you could visit. I don't mind there also being the new more self-service outdoor booth for travelers on a particular a route, but still would like to keep the texture of full-scale facilities in the cities. I think gen 9 is cool, it's just little intimate touches like that would make me choose gen 1.

Hm

I don't know if I would agree about it being easier to get lost. I think from a modern perspective, Generation 1 is going to be more familiar to navigate because Kanto has been done so many times. Yet by Pokemon standards, it's pretty cryptic if you play with absolutely no idea on what to do next.

Gen 9 follows a normal open world game design in which the player is always pointed towards getting back towards the right path (or some form of civilization). Which is why it feeds you so many map markers and pointers. They want to design an open world but not cause player frustration.

The Champion and elite 4 were done better in the gen 1 games, with more charismatic leaders, stronger teams and rooms for each member that said something about the elemental type they specialized in. At the end of all your trials you also went into that Hall of Fame to be inducted with your Pokemon in an official ceremony- I love that part!
