So, basically I was having a " conversation" with another girl who told me that designer labels are pointless and are a waste of money.

I was wondering what do you think of designer labels such as Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Chanel and Christian Louboutin?
Do you think they are pointless?
What would you think of someone who you could see was sporting a designer bag or jewellery or top?

Honestly I love these brands. They are very dreamy and luxurious and is a statement of how wealthy you are.
Yes they are expensive but I think it shows how much of a good product and how much time has gone into making it.

Some designer brands are a joke *cough*Yeezy*cough*. But I love fashion and the big design houses. They're expensive for a reason. I own a pair of Ralph Lauren boots and they are so pretty and make me so happy <3 I'd love to save up and buy a nice designer jacket as well.

So no, I personally don't think they're a waste of money. I think a lot of talent and hardwork goes into these clothes.

they're merely a status symbol. if you're insecure enough to care about that, then I guess they're cool, otherwise I can find cooler clothes at the thrift store.

I guess the closest I get to this is with my skate shoes? I donnu all the other brands let me down so I'll usually throw down a good chunk of change on a pair that was designed by an actual skater. they're super nice but they definitely attract a lot of attention

You get me so much :)
The boots are very expensive as I had a quick browse on their websites and completely jelly.
Personally I am more into designer bags, shoes and jewellery.
The brands that I can manage to afford is Michael Kors, Chanel and Ted baker.
    Ted Baker has lovely clothes.
I feel like being able to afford these brands is something that I want to work towards and I dont want to wear these brands just because they are " designer" but because it shows that I worked hard enough to buy a product that is considered luxury.

Yeah, I definitely don't and wouldn't wear brands just to wear them. For me, it stems from a long love with fashion. I love clothes and for a long time I thought about working in the fashion industry in some capacity. I also like to make my own dresses :) In high school and college I would have STACKS of Vogue, Bazaar, etc. I used to be able to flip to any ad in a magazine and tell you what designer it was without looking at the label.

So it's my love of the art form & the respect of the designer's aesthetic that makes me want to pay extra for the clothes. I could live in a mountain all by myself and I'd still buy a designer dress/coat/whatever if I could.

I think working for it is so much more fun too!

I'm poor as poop and have never owned anything designer. I feel like a lot of things are expensive for a reason but some are just way too expensive unpess they will last forever. I don't think less of people that wear anything like that but it's not for me. Sure something 20 quid might not last as long but by the time it's worn out I'll want something new anyway.

I think it depends on the brand? Some of them are no better than the shit I get at Sears, But others are expensive because they are good quality. I was lucky enough to get a pair of designer pants once years ago and they're still good.

Too poor for designer labels. But I was taught how to look cute with what I have to give the same effect.
The only difference would be the price tag, the durability, and how many outright sweatshops were employed to produce the product.

lmao people who have an interest in fashionable clothing are insecure? okay then
popping down to the local goodwill for everything isn't for everyone, darling

i have a cobalt blue birkin bag from my grandmother that i could n e v e r afford in a million years and so only use it on very particular occasions, given the level of expensiveness and the impossibility of replacing if it was stolen/damaged/lost
it's the only expensive item i own (I love being poor) and it was given to me under the condition i don't attempt to sell it until after she dies

I am familar with the Hermes brand as a lot of celebrities such as the kardashians have these and there is no way in hell I be able to afford those handbags unless I won the lottery.
Moreover I googled that bag and it looks totally gorgeous do you mind if I borrow it? I promise to keep it in top condition.

And also I am poor as well so we can all make a club.
When ever I look at my bank balance it makes want to curl up in a ball.

how are you gonna straw man me like that gurl. I'm not referring to people with an interest in fashion -- I am eluding to those who drop heavy coins just for a brand, one that's "a statement of how wealthy you are" like op mentioned. big difference yo

I got 3 maybe 4 Ralph Lauren shirts, 3 "Polo" polos and a sweater that's RL. Don't know if you classify "Levi" as designer or not but I got 2 pairs of $100 Levi jeans as well as a couple pair of older Lucky Brand jeans. I got a pair of Jordans and many fitted hats (sports and authentic). Nike/Under Armour/ Idk if that's classified as designer (I don't think it is but it can be expensive), I got alot of that as well; but I also follow sports and I'm quite athletic.

I look at designer clothing as your financial status (or for those that can afford it if they like it). I'm not rich but I got guap, (or when I got it to buy clothing after paying for other things first); that clothing is also comfortable on me which is why I wear it; The fabric just feels right, and it lasts. So no, IMO it's not a waste of money. If you can afford it and you like the clothing buy it. Designer clothing doesn't really effect your life in any way. If you like designer clothing for how it feels or looks then buy it (if you can afford), or if you like cheap clothing then buy it. Clothing is just an accessory that we wear for comfort (depending on conditions), those that judge based on your clothing are insecure. I also feel you shouldn't wear designer clothing to blend in with other that wear it, it makes you look like a tool. You gotta have the personality along with it. It's hard to explain really.

. I've had my Levis for years as well as other designer clothing and they're still running strong. Most feel weird at first but they actually feel and get better as they age or worn more. They last quite a long time to be quite honest.

To me designer clothes are like buying a piece of art. Most often it's very expensive because you have to consider the countless hours of design, skill, craftsmanship, and talent that went into creating it. Sometimes it's worth it if you like it, other times not so much. It really depends on your personal style and taste.

That's only referring to clothes that are part of the "main lines," though. Not the "lower lines" many brands like Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, etc, have in stores like TJ Maxx and Kohls. The quality of those lower lines tends to be no better than any other store you'd find in a typical mall, but their prices are much higher than everything else in the store. Those are not worth it at all because the quality of design and construction isn't there. In that case, you really are being overcharged for a label.

Personally I would never spend money on designer clothes or things of that nature.

That's not to say that they're not worth it or that they're pointless. It's just pointless for ME to own them because I see no personal value in them.

I don't seem to care about designer labels of clothing, considering that I'm from a low income family who only bothers buying generic brands of clothing. Literally everything I wear these days seems to be from Target, and its generic labels.

They definitely aren't pointless and anyone who thinks so should watch The Devil Wears Prada for a better insight into how the fashion industry actually works.

I would definitely patronize designer labels if I have the financial resources to sustain my expenditure. As true as it may be that designer clothing is often a symbol of status to the layman's perspective, wearing a brand and wearing it proud is nothing about flaunting wealth. It's the same as buying every album, every deluxe edition or platinum record, of your favourite singer and declaring your support. Designer houses usually rely on their designer products to market their other "low-fashion" clothing lines that are mass-manufactured, and they need the support of loyal clientele.

P.S. Also I'm not sure why having a status symbol has negative connotations.

Late to the discussion but I think designer labels are great to have when you're older and won't be swapping out closets every other season for changing trends. Recently I've been thinking that the more mature I get in age and life experience, the more I should invest in high quality items. That said, it's easier to not have to swap stuff out all the time with purses and wallets and other accessories like that, rather than with clothes. I rarely buy designer clothes just because I know that by the time the season it was made for rolls around again, it's not going to be relevant to the new fashion trends no matter what age I'm at and that's just not prudent spending. (Unless it's denim, but I don't wear denim.)

I'm still at the age where I'm swapping out purses and things like that based on the season or trending colors on a regular basis though, so I try to keep my brand choices geared towards the more reasonable mid-tier end-- AKA I'm definitely not about that Louis Vuitton or Prada life.

Designer labels are good in that they are usually well-made and have thought put into them, but that can be said of other clothing and accessories that aren't as designer-y or expensive. Designer clothing, too, doesn't often cater to people outside of a certain body type. So there are some downsides, but really whatever makes people happy, right? If you think you're getting your money's worth then more power to you.

I think it's pretty easy to tell between designer labels, not all are created equal in my opinion. I'd rather have a quality product like cologne from Calvin Klein, because they're known for it and make a good product, rather than some new flavor-of-the-month label like Yeezy. I'd rather pay up and have the quality, over the "it-factor" and inflated sense of social pecking order conferred by owning something.

I am just like "whateves" my brother is all into designer stuff and I think it is okay sometimes,
but other times, I'd just forget about it.

I wear whatever feels good to me.
