What if Pokemon has a Pokemon Maker game?

I wonder what it would be if Pokemon has a Pokemon maker game like mario maker. You will be able to customize maps, gym leaders, etc... It will be like legal rom hacks lol.

But I wonder if the franchise will die because of it.

    What do you guys think?

Moved this over to Gaming Central since it focuses more on the games.

I was actually thinking about this recently though!! the main games would sure as heck be way less popular, especially if Pokémon Maker gave people lots of creative freedom (multiple regions, more than 8 gym leaders, etc). But even if we were limited and could only make a single region w/ max 8 gyms, I still feel like a lot of people would be able to make better games lol. which isn't a surprise since they're not dealing with deadlines, executives making decisions for you, and all the other formalities that come with making and releasing a game as big as this worldwide.

I think.... a Pokemon game in the vein of Mario Maker would be cool. But I don't know if Nintendo would ever do something like that for this franchise. It'd probably be very limited in scope of what you can do w/it. Ie: you wouldn't be able to make an entire region from scratch with it like in Rom Hacks/Fan Games. I also don't think something like that would be enough to kill Pokemon games.

I would like to see such a game, but i dont think Nintendo will release it, since creating a Pokemon game is much more extensive than creating a Mario maker level and Nintendo will likely assume that kids dont have the time to create complete Pokemon games, thus they would assume that there isnt an audience big enough to justify such a game.
If Pokemon rom hacking continues to growth, maybe Nintendo allows to customize trainer parties after finishing one playthrough.

I don't think it would ever happen but it would sure be amazing! Legal and properly distributed ROM hacks would do wonders for the community, think if Nintendo endorsed some of the most popular ROM hacks, potential would be huge! Plus, people often actually make better games than the main series releases haha, I haven't been the biggest player of ROM hacks, but have played through a few in my time and dabbled in advanced map etc.

It wouldn't kill the main series for me, cause it would probably be quite limited, but would really be cool to see community generated Pokemon games (for real)!

Definitely not to that extend. They're well aware that people would use them and some may create something that ends up outshining the originals.

I think it'd be something more akin to a battle creator. You can create trainers others can battle with including settings like which Pokemon they use, which movesets they have, items, etc. There may even be restrictions like which Pokemon you have, which moves, levels, items. And much like MM you'd need to beat that fight first before you can upload it.

I could see this work because Pokemon battles at their core are nothing but puzzles and just because GF is bad at creating puzzles doesn't mean others are as well.

While I would play the heck out of a Pokemon maker type game, I think the best that we'll ever get is something like an official version of Pokemon Showdown, maybe where you can create preset teams and trainers to battle against. I don't this would happen any time soon though- maybe as a last ditch effort to try and bring people back to the games if they start failing (and if the sales of Sword and Shield are anything to go by, they're far from it).

It could definitely work, as there are many RPG maker's out there and one focused on Pokemon doesn't sound impossible.

It's an interesting question if it would hurt the franchise. Mario Maker basically allows you infinite Mario Levels, but official games aren't going to stop anytime soon. I guess maybe it would be different for an RPG.

i feel like the success of this would very wildly on how much customisation and freedom they intend to give players. i don't really have faith in Game Freak that they're going to pull off a pokemon version of mario maker and not have it come with some heavy restrictions on what players can/can't do so it does't seem better than the originals. which... unfortunately, defeats the purpose for a game like that, i think.

i also think what Brendino said is pretty reasonable. the most we can hope for is probably an official-ish version of PS!, if anything.
