Would it be good for voice acting in games?

I know it would take way too much resources if they put voice acting in the game for important event dialogues or maybe just a few repeat quotes in battle. However, would this make the game better overall? Or would it make it worst? If they do include it, should the main character talk? Would it hurt the silent protagonist and ruin the imagining your ideal character mentality? Would it cause too much problems maybe having to give different sets of voices to him/her or options on dialogues?

    1. I love video game voice acting. However, voice acting can usually be done for two things: big chuncks of speech and battle cries. Since Pokémon is all action-based, I would recommend the latter for it.
    2. Link. Mario. Many more. Silent protagonists are great. they make the character feel more "you" because they don't say stuff that you wouldn't. Keep the Pokémon trainer that way until we have futuristic video games where the CPU react to things that you actually say.

If we're discussing handheld Pokémon games, then no, I definitely wouldn't like to see that. :( I just love how it is currently, and am very used to it. If it were for home consoles like Wii and Wii U, then I wouldn't mind that; it would actually be pretty interesting to see how it all turns out!

If they were to include voice acting, I could see important parts of dialogue (such as intros.) and things like grunts or short and sweet sentences (like "Yeah!" and "I see." and so forth) being spoken. However, I could never see them give a voice acting role to the protagonist. It would ruin the implication that the protagonist is you. That being said, there have been plenty of games where the protag. isn't given a voice (such as earlier Harvest Moon games), so it's doable. People aside, I can also seem them voice acting all the Pokemon, much like Pikachu in Yellow and XY. (In fact, if they did act more voice acting, I can see them voicing the Pokemon more than they can the people.)

As for how I'd feel about it being added in, I don't think it'd make the game any better or worse (unless the voice acting is horrendous and there isn't an option to turn it off), so if it were added, I'd be fine with it so long as it weren't terrible.

I'm not sure... Maybe of everybody spoke gibberish (Animal Crossing Style) so we still had to read the text... But tbh I'm really happy with how it is now, bad voice acting can make or break some games. When it comes to Pokemon, If it 'ain't broken, don't fix it!

Yea I wouldn't be able to deal with pokemon if they had voices in the games. If they were going to implement voice actors into the game it should only be for your rival, gym leaders, evil boss leader guy, and maaaaaybe Elite 4. And I don't even know if it would be okay then.

I actually really dislike voice acting in games most of the time :| The only time I've liked it is in Kid Icarus Uprising. So I would prefer if they didn't use voice acting at all in these games, but I guess I could tolerate a few short sentences.

Pokemon's been silent for as long as we can remember. To add voice-acting to a game with a silent protagonist would end up leaving you wondering why he's not talking. Pokemon's a different kind of RPG, where you take the entire role of the trainer and make your own way the way you want it. Which means each trainer's opinions, insights, and ideas all differ from one trainer to the next. To give a voice to this kind of character would ruin that 'uniquely yours' feel entirely. Because then the character would end up having a solid personality.

So with that being said the most that I could ever see being added to the games as far as this goes is subtle voice-acting, like what's done in Mario and Zelda games. Where characters make a vocal sound of approval, disapproval, hum, mumble, grunt.. some of these games even have characters speaking gibberish rather than saying dialogue. (i.e Mario, Luigi, Midna)

This kind of thing could potentially work out in Pokemon, but complete and full voice acting would take away a lot of that imagination. Any full-on voiced dialogue would take away a lot of the magic, just like it would in the other Nintendo games. If any voice acting ever occurs for Pokemon I want it to be the subtle kind.

Because that actually sounds pretty cool!

I agree with you, the current formula of just text for dialogue without voicing is what I'm so used to for almost 20 years now and if Pokemon games were to get voice acting I'd only see it on the home console versions and not the handheld games.

Also, having voice acting in the main handheld games would ruin the whole thing of the player representing a "silent protagonist" whose personality is all imagined by the player.

I don't want voice acting in handheld games. I don't want them to spend any time, money or effort in useless additions to the presentation if the actual content suffers, and considering that we are talking about 3DS carts that only have so much space (and they already have all that music, Pokémon models etc) , that would be pretty much a given.

ROM size isn't much of an issue imo. Pokemon models are less than a couple of megabytes each and the games' textures are very low-res. There are several 3DS games out now on cartridges almost as large as a single-layer DVD, which puts them on par with many PS2 and Wii games that have large worlds and voice acting. For the record, X and Y come in at around 1.7GBs which leaves a lot of room for expansion.

I think I'd prefer there not to be voice acting in all honesty - one of the things I love about Pokémon is the capacity to imagine all the little details and if the voices of the characters are given to you it kinda takes away from the uniqueness of your game a little bit, just my opinion :)

I wouldn't mind voice acting. If they improved the story and made it a huge focus beyond even BW's levels, I'd think it was almost a necessity. Because I can't imagine voices in my mind, I find that in a well-told story, they add a LOT of depth to it that can't just be conveyed through text. Voices add subtle emotions, implications of the character's motives, and basically almost are as good as being the character themselves.

But if the story stayed at the same levels it is now, I'd rather they just do minor voice acting like grunts, cries of pain, maybe the other characters saying: "NOOO!" when they've lost, etc. Things like that. That'd probably be more in character with Pokemon and Nintendo as a whole.

I could certainly get behind voice acting in Pokemon games. Main series or otherwise.
Making it optional would be ideal, though I know Nintendo wouldn't. I don't know why they have such an issue with making certain features that are purely aesthetic in nature optional.

I trust that the voices that would be used would fit the characters. I liked the voices for Origins and generally like the voices for the show. I would not like Pokemon to speak like they do in the anime. What they have in the games right now is good.

I also agree with the notion that it needs to be done with purpose. Main series Pokemon games have never had a plot that would merit the inclusion of voice acting. GameFreak is improving their story writing but it still leaves much to be desired. I don't want to see GameFreak sacrifice other, more important, features for the sake of voices.

Especially since, in Pokemon, you are supposed to be self-inserting yourself into the games as the protagonist (especially in XY where you could change the character's appearance!). If there was voice acting we would be playing less of ourselves and more of a specific character that the developers had in mind.

Or they can put voice acting on all the other characters except the protagonist, kind of like persona games.

To be completely exact, Persona protagonists have seiyuus =D You know, in-battle scenes with "PE-RU-SO-NA!"
Akira Ishida for Minato and Daisuke Namikawa for Yu ;)

On topic... I don't think it would be a good idea to change the concept now...
It didn't start with voice acting so it would be kinda weird if it started after all these years =D

I dont know. Probably not, because it can be either very good or very bad, and I dont want to risk. Otherwise, if done well, why not.
