Really, I don't use emoticons as much as I used to. I used to use them in just about every single forum post I made, but that's died down. I have however continued to use emoji, but those aren't supported all devices yet.
 
I find emoticons great for displaying emotions in instant messaging! In these more expansive forum posts I don't really feel the need to display my emotions in a quick fashion.
 
I love the emoticons from the online site japaneseemoticons, and that's where I copy/paste the majority of the emoticons I use in posts sometimes :P Haven't been doing it recently because I'm too lazy. But the general simple ones that everyone uses I rarely use in posts because my OCD kicks in thinking that it disrupts the text flow of my post.
 
I don't like using them so much anymore. I like simplicity, so when I do use them, they're the simple :) or :( ones. It's also a little ironic for me because for a very long time I was into complex ones and thought those were really ugly, but now they're the only ones I'll use. Unless I'm talking to someone who I've been talking to since before my transition - I'll still use ;; and o_o and such with some people.

I also like ?_? at times.
 
I use them all the time; they're a great way to show your mood and feelings. :] Whenever I don't use them, I don't know... I always feel robotic, so to speak, haha.
 
I use them when I'm feeling particularly playful, but other times I find myself not using them, especially when I try to be serious.

Pretty much this.

I don't use them as often as I did when I was, say, 13. And I don't use most of the ones that I did back then, either, haha.

But sometimes I just feel so.. cold not adding them in -- especially since there's not many other ways to express that some statements were meant to be sarcastic or lighthearted without the use of one.

That's true. Sometimes people interpret messages as being too serious, or anything else other than what you're actually try to communicate so emoticons are a great way to show emotion through text c:
 
Oh yes, I do all the time! It's a way to express my feelings, and how I feel towards the other person or towards a thing. :)

In IMs or any form of messaging, I obviously use it. It's a great way to express what you're feeling.

Forum posts... I'm trying not to use it that much now since it starts to look a bit disturbing.

But anyhow, my favorite emoticon is: P:

If I used an emoticon every time I wanted to, every single post would be cluttered with at least twenty, haha. Love using them, but I try not to go overboard. In the past, I've restricted myself to one or two per reply, but nowadays I'm not as mindful of my usage. Favorite one is n__n! That's one I consciously use all the time.
 
Considering I have the smilie overuser emblem, I think it's obvious. XD I tend to use them a lot because they get my point across. It makes me feel less of a fool when I act serious all of the time. XD
