it's encouraged to where i live in alabama, but i don't really do it.. i used to when i was younger and lived in alabama (for a short time before moving over and over again) but after i lived in new york for so long i just grew out of the habit.
But seriously, outside of male teachers at school, I don't think I've called anyone 'sir'. Literally never think I've called anyone ma'am, although if I met the Queen, I'd be given a 20 minute lecture on how 'ma'am' is the correct turn of phrase.
literally never. not while i was in school, not when i was working in retail, not in a job interview, never. don't particularly want to work with people who expect me to use false respect terms like that, and i absolutely hate them being used in me too
I use sir/ma'am with ppl I'm not super familiar with but everybody gets a mr. or miss. who's older then me out of habit. I think it's pretty common here
At work sometimes. You'd be surprised how many people will leave stuff behind and walk away and just saying "excuse me" or "hey" or anything like that won't get their attention, but people stop when they hear "sir/ma'am" for some reason.
in the classroom, i definitely call my teachers "mr/mrs _" but not in a casual conversation. i just stay as polite as possible while treating them as a human and not jesus
