your thoughts on Emblems

    We have an emblems system here on PC, which has been around for at least half a decade by now.

    What are your thoughts on it?

    What emblems have you managed to get?

    Emblems are emblems, not much to say to that, tbh. I mean you can get them for whatever event or purpose they're for, but at the end of the day, noone besides yourself really get something out of them.

    As long as I've been around here, I've never seen anybody come say something like "omg, you have so many emblems, lolz", if you know what I mean.

    At the same time they don't really hurt anything, since there's no real benefit that could lead people to run after them. Or maybe that's a bad thing? If emblems had certain effects that could potentially liven things up whenever need be.
    If there's a section that suffered from insufficient frequency of posters that could offer an emblem for activity, that also offered a certain benefit, maybe that could get things back up running again. Or if, let's say, different emblems had effects only in certain forums, then it could be used to give those sections some other special gimmick, that no other forum has (outside of receiving an emblem).

    Just some random thoughts.
     
    I personally LOVE emblems. I dunno, I just really like them :D They're nice to have even though people don't care for them much.

    Being here for six years, I feel like Emblems have become a staple for me. However, these days...and I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like they are not being used as often as before. Back in my active days, they were like "the must have" but now it's like "wait, what are they??" It's kinda sad, really.

    If only the Emblem system was refreshed a bit then we could have that spark again. I would like to explain this in detail, but I'm tired and I'll get back to this.

    I've also been here for almost 6 years (geez) and I recall emblems being such a huge deal. I recall being excited for getting those emblems, and now it's just meh.

    Imo, I'd like to see emblems be replaced by something more meaningful, and more noticable.
     
    I've been to other sites that use this and they all just seem to be the same. Hey you get a small square for doing this and that's it. You get it and then forget about it. You don't really have to work hard for them and you don't really get much for having a certain amount. It just needs to be something different.

    How could we make it more noticeable? And in what way could we make them feel meaningful?
     
    I got the Gem Amongst Granite emblem prior to becoming staff and that meant a lot to me because it meant I was being noticed, which was incredibly important to me at the time. Since then, Chattier than a Chatot recognized my Chit Chat & Polls presence (which I've always loved) and that about sums up the super meaningful ones. The rest were nice when I got them and I like looking on my past ones to reminisce, but I wouldn't say that emblems are hugely important to me at this juncture.
     
    i know it sounds geeky but i kind of get excited when i see i've gotten an emblem. it's kind of a cute way of recognition, someone acknowledging my existence on the forum is nice, i don't care if others see it or not. however, i feel like emblems aren't given out as randomly as they used to be (by looking at emblems others have). they're not used as general acknowledgement, they're moreso rewards for participation.

    the images for two of my emblems are broken and it's just an eyesore atm :( other than that, i like emblems and i wish for them to be used more frequently. hopefully this makes sense, i'm tired and i don't feel like proofreading.
     
    This topic has resurfaced numerous times both in the public and staff forums and numerous ideas have been generated in how to rejuvenate the system, whether that be to remove them completely or change things up in some way. My stance on the topic has always been the same: let them go. They're tired, old and not all that rare or valuable anymore. There is no appeal, at least for me.

    As a side note: will any change come about from this thread? Every time this topic has been brought up so many really interesting and fresh ideas have been brought to the table only for everyone to leave it and for those ideas to spoil. No joke. There are one or two threads with pages and pages of ideas just sitting there. Will any actual progress be made?
     
    Honestly I'd like to see more emblems become requestable or rather well...explained. Most of the set of emblems we have now are kind of undocumented and most of them don't really explain what conditions there are for them.

    Some emblems like Level Up, Gem Amongst Granite and even Super Noobcake are hopelessly subjective criteria as well. So oftentimes I feel like people get passed up for emblems like these pretty often unless they're really cozying up to the right staff members which kind of demeans their value if you ask me. Don't even get me started on how emblems like these come easy for popular people either.

    There also should be a place; a thread hopefully; set aside for people to simply poke staff members to check and see if they qualify for any emblems, or nominate other members for emblems that are non-requestable. Staff should award them more frequently. The main issue I see with emblems over these years is that they really aren't awarded enough. There's no real easy way to nominate people either for them aside from PMing a staff member and hoping they concur with your idea.

    Emblems I think could become something big and nice again. Perhaps most of your subjective emblems could become emblems that any user can nominate you for in the proper place; and staff can keep track of how many nominations a user gets and award these emblems based on how many nominations you get. I can see emblems like Level Up or Gem amongst Granite being something that you could amass 2-3 nominations for, and as long as you aren't on the naughty list according to staff, you could be awarded the emblem!

    I know for a fact there are a few non-requestable emblems that I should already have under my belt; and would have them if I were a more popular person on PC. But I won't name those emblems or spill any more salt than that on the subject.

    Hopefully. What members think of it all is kind of crucial though, so don't think what you say here is not noticed! (: there's just plenty of things happening on PC now, so nothing can be rushed.
     
    Emblems used to be such a high point for me at PC (at least around 2009 - 2011). Hell it made me really happy getting the Gender Bender emblem after wanting it for so long.

    I liked the way that honey and antemortem put it. Especially during my first few years on PC, just being recognised for existing, being active on PC and members appreciating my presence on this forum in general did really make my time here. I would get really excited of staff member that I really looked up to back then awarded me an emblem even if I hadn't talked to them personally much.

    I think one of the reasons I got really excited about emblems was because everyone else was just as excited. There was such an atmosphere around getting them and certain staff giving them that it made you want to earn those emblems too - and by that I mean personal staff emblems/ general emblems/ not earned by an event. When people lose the excitement, the emblems don't feel as exciting anymore.

    Especially since most of the ones that I have as do a lot of people have are either from Get-Togethers or other forum events, I guess a lot of us have gotten too used to the idea participating = at least one emblem for participating (Heck 29/41 emblems I have were from Get-Togethers and other events, but the remaining 12 are probably my most favoured ones - this is totally not because I gave myself like 7 iSketch emblems when I was hosting the event 3 times xD).
