YOU'RE GROUNDED!

Sure, they like to be out. But most kids enjoy playing video games and watching TV as well, whether they have a social life or not. I think it's just a waste of time when compared to alternative punishments. For most kids, it's not going to be a huge deal and likely won't teach them a lesson.
No they're not going to get unhealthy, but if they're not allowed to spend time with friends for a matter of months it can be potentially damaging to that friendship.
sure they do but who says they aren't going to take those away. you don't have to take the word grounded so literally and assume that it can only mean staying at home, when i was grounded the internet router was switched off, my phone was taken away and my ps3 was taken away. some people might enjoy watching tv all day everyday for a week but i was miserable, and it made me think twice about skipping school again because i didn't want to have to go through that again. basically i'm saying your parents usually know you or at least have an idea of what you like to do from observing, so the grounding can and many times will be tailored to the individual.

what entails months of grounding? i'm not saying there isn't anything but you usually get "sentenced" to a week or two rather than a month for minor things, so if what you're doing is bad enough to deserve a lengthy punishment it's your fault for doing it in the first place. consider it another part of your punishment. though i don't think your example happens very often, or at least it's never happened to anybody i know who's gotten grounded for that long. you still get to go to school and if they're a friend you've met outside of school why do you deserve to see them when you've done something bad enough to warrant months of grounding? not that i believe being grounded would really destroy relationships in the first place.

you could say the parents are over reacting in giving them a long grounding over something minor but you shouldn't then say grounding is an unfair punishment, because that's the fault of the parent. if i was wasted off my ass and couldn't open my car door with a car key does that mean car keys are ineffective?

Never been grounded. I'm just a kiss-ass :D

Not really, I've been rebellious, but never so much to land me with a grounding.

Then that's different if you get everything you enjoy taken away, although I still think isolating your child and then subjecting them to pure boredom is not really a productive method, but views on that vary from parent to parent, obviously.

Maybe for you it made you think twice, but I know it had literally no effect on any of my friends. They would get grounded and their behaviour never changed at all. If it is in the case you presented before where everything is taken away, then I have no doubt that it can be an effective punishment method, even if I personally think it's going over the top.

I wouldn't know, I haven't been grounded. But it does happen. "Why do you deserve to see them if you've done something bad" unless you've committed armed robbery with your friend, I think saying that you don't deserve to contact them is going way over the top. This is meant to be a punishment to educate youngsters, not imprisonment.

When I was still young enough to be grounded I never did. I got threatened a few times but that was it. But I never did anything that would get me into huge trouble anyway. Well, I never got caught... lol jk. Sort of >_> The only thing that ever got me in trouble with my parents was my inability to not ~back talk~ them.

Have you been Grounded?
Nope, my parents do not see much of a point in the punishment.

And I think that pretty much answers everything else, haha. When I do get punished, I always have to do some sort of labor to "pay off" my deeds. That way, my punishment is more productive than being confined to the inside of your house doing nothing. It teaches discipline and is a positive punishment, imo. I really do like my parents' style, lols.

Have you been Grounded?: Yes, a few times.
If You are grounded what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?: Usually, it's for not doing what I'm supposed to do.
Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?:
What's Your Grounding Punishment? Not allowed out of the House or something taken away from you?: They take away my right to use the Internet or limit it.
How Long are you usually Grounded For?: Around a few days or a few weeks.

You have very smart parents. lol

Have you been Grounded?
Yes, but not very often at all.
If You are grounded what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?
It's mainly for behaving inappropriately or refusing to do homework, though I've learned by now and hardly ever get grounded which is a good thing, no?
Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?
Keeping me in my room is no fun, but I'm limited to certain activities outside of the house such as not going far out when I want or getting on certain electronics.
What's Your Grounding Punishment? Not allowed out of the House or something taken away from you?
Usually I'd get my laptop and certain electronics taken away, but I just so happen to hide some electronics so I can get on sneaking, which is bad but hey we all do.
How Long are you usually Grounded For?
My groundings have never been severe they usually only last a few days or sometimes even a day or hours, entirely depends on a parent's mood, well for me at least.

I have never been grounded.

My parents don't even know such thing as being grounded existed, however, as I was growing up I did face ways of discipline that never gave them any such ideas at all.

I've never had anything taken away from me and my dad always did call that a rather impractical way to discipline me. Other parents can do that to their children, but he always said he wouldn't do that to me because of the amount of trust he has in his child. And from that...came the bond of trust we're incredibly strong till this day.

I get grounded sometimes. Why? Mostly bad-mouthing. I'm bad at keeping my mouth in check.

But I was grounded differently. Kind of like when your friends shun me. My mom did that, and because of that I don't do it anymore.

Have you been Grounded?
My parents don't know the meaning of grounding, so no, I don't get grounded. :D

Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?
Well, they don't ground me... But usually they just yell at me if I do something wrong, but that happens rarely now compared to when I was a child

My biggest grounding -- and the only one I actually remember -- was back when I was living in Japan. I accidentally locked my parents out of the house*. Went to bed, woke up to them pounding on the door. Got grounded from electronics during my winter break. What sucked most is that I couldn't play Pokemon Stadium 2, which I got for Christmas. </3

To this day I still think it was completely unfair that I was grounded at all, considering it was a honest mistake.

* Gotta love my parents, not actually having house keys on them ever! They still hardly lock the house. -_-;; Sometimes I wonder how I manage to do it every day when they never did until they moved into a house that automatically locked itself.

Have you been Grounded?
I haven't... but my sisters have been plenty. Though I didn't know it was called being grounded until I was 8.... My parents called it being on restriction.
If You are grounded what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?
Bad grades, misconducts, the usual things.
Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?
Again, I myself have never been grounded, but it was usually very isolated and quiet... (I lived in the boonies at the time whicch would make it that much worse for the groundee/restricted)
What's Your Grounding Punishment? Not allowed out of the House or something taken away from you?
Isolation and quiet time. Couldn't even read... Just sit and think. My oldest sister hated it the most.
How Long are you usually Grounded For?
Varies on the cause. anywhere from 3 days to a month.

Have you been Grounded?
Plenty of times.
If You are grounded what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?
Attitude; Goody-goody brother; bad grades
Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?
They just say it.
What's Your Grounding Punishment? Not allowed out of the House or something taken away from you?
No... internet! T_T
How Long are you usually Grounded For?
Two weeks tops, unless it's something horrible like an F on my report card. That calls for nine weeks.

Have you been Grounded?
Not in ages, and even then... not really, I was more so just sent to my room, but that didn't really happen too much either, not from my parents anyways.
If You are grounded what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?
I was usually sent to my room by my older siblings when they watched me, and it was for annoying them or not listening to them I suppose.
My parents sometimes sort of grounded me by not letting me go out for a night, and that was usually because I went somewhere without telling them first.
Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?
I don't think I've ever been grounded for more than a weekend, and even then, I was only not allowed to leave the house to hang out with friends. I could still use my computer, watch tv, etc.
What's Your Grounding Punishment? Not allowed out of the House or something taken away from you?
Not allowed out.
How Long are you usually Grounded For?
A night, like I said I was never really grounded for long or anything. And I was never really grounded all that much anyways.

Have you been Grounded?
Yep, who hasn't! XD

If you are grounded what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?
Just doing something bad. I was a trouble maker in Primary School.

Parents - How do they Ground you? How Bad Do they Ground you?
Not games, no TV, just work and reading.

What's Your Grounding Punishment? Not allowed out of the House or something taken away from you?
Answered above.

How Long are you usually Grounded For?
I have never done anything so bad to warrant a long grounding. Only like a week.

I hated my parents grounding me, but looking back on it, I do respect them for doing it. I am their kid and they were only doing what is best for me, and I love them for it.

// Have you been grounded?
Of course I have. I just haven't been in years. I think the last time was when I was ten. I'm not stupid enough to let myself get caught doing something I know I'm not supposed to be doing.

// If you are grounded, what is it usually for? Curfew? Bad Grades?
It could be for anything. Bad grades, attitude, doing things I wasn't supposed to be doing, that sort of thing.

Parents - How do they ground you? How bad do they ground you?
My mom is very forgetful, so sometimes she'll forget all about it.

What's your grounding punishment? Not allowed out of the house or something taken away from you?
Anything fun, can't do.

How long are you usually grounded for?
A few days, a week tops.

I don't see bad grades as a reason to be punished, as you can't exactly control difintively what grades you get.
I have been grounded but my DS is usually in my room and my dad's ibook which he lent me. :P

I've been grounded numerous times for different things, but the majority of the groundings were from getting after-school detentions at school. One was from going to a beach party and pretending I was at a friend's house and getting caught, but that was ages ago. Most recent would be grounded from being in a band for almost the whole of my final year of school, which I completely didn't agree with. The second guitarist from one of the bands I was in had left just before I got grounded so that band just crumbled after I was forced to leave by my parents, and my other band was just me and a drummer (two-piece band) and the drummer is in another band at the moment so basically it ruined my whole musical life. What's really stupid is that the amount of school work I did was exactly the same before and after being grounded, the only difference was instead of playing music and having fun with friends at rehearsal studios in my spare time I was watching television and going on forums. Now I've finished school, and in my parents eyes that makes me ground-free. I don't know how parents are still able to ground 19+ year olds.
