New friends, but oh so weak. Getting all of them to level 10 was doable. After that... oooof. With my team around level 12-14, it appeared to be quite troublesome to beat even wild Pokémon of the same level, even the ones that gave a crappy amount of experience (who'd have thought that Hoothoot could be this annoying?). After a while I decided to push on instead. Wild Tentacool, albeit level 10-24 (mostly lv. ~18) were the perfect target for grinding. Little Defense, no good attacks - Constrict? Pff yeah. Poison Sting or Acid? Only Poison and Ground here. Toxic Spikes? Hahaha. - and worth quite a decent amount of experience points, providing your Pokémon are say 6 levels lower, which they were.
Staying safely near the coast, as Xander still required a visit to the Pokémon Center every 2-4 Tentacool, his Pokémon had been killing Tentacool for some time until suddenly the boss appeared: a lv. 20 Tentacruel. His entire team together was only able to chip the monstrosity's health to about half. Hoping for a lucky throw, Xander lobbed his sole Ultra Ball at the wild jellyfish Pokémon, but it broke free. A Great Ball then? Wobble, wobble, wobble... click! Gotcha, Jelly was caught!
Now, Xander dared to Surf further into the sea. Fleur appeared to be quite capable of defeating all the swimmer's Pokémon and quickly evolved into Gloom. Jelly's huge special bulk provided a backup in case things went awry.
Still underlevelled as heck, I only blacked out twice against unsuspectingly strong trainers when back on land at the other side of the ocean. Ah well, the wild Gloom, Tauros and Girafarig near the Safari Zone would be the next victim of my grinding session.
Much later, Xander's team's levels were about the same as the old team, still much lower than the Gym Leader's. No matter. Chuck's Pokémon have fallen victim to the worst passive aggressive strategy ever. Primeape could spam Double Team all he wanted, but that didn't change the fact that he was slowly perishing from Shadow's Curse. Meanwhile, instead of actually trying to attack him, Jelly spend this time to lay out two layers of Toxic Spikes. Poliwrath's doom had already been laid out.
You know what's the fun thing about Curse? You can use it twice, equal to the number of Chuck's Pokémon. With Curse and Toxic Poison, his fate was sealed. Sure, two Hyper Potion extended his life a bit, but me swapping Pokémon between Muddy, absorbing Surf entirely, and Snek for some extra Intimidate spam meant his damage output wasn't too spectacular.
Storm Badge get! Who says you need levels or even damaging moves, right?
