    2025 Reading Challenge

    2020 Thread | 2021 Thread | 2022 Thread | 2023 Thread | 2024 Thread

Welcome to the 2025 PokéCommunity Reading challenge!

Here we pledge to read a certain number of books and/or comics in 2025, and try to encourage each other along the way!

    FYI:
    • FIVE issues of a comic book series counts as a book.
    • ONE volume of manga counts as a book.
    • You can decide if non-fiction books align with your goals or if only fiction counts for you!

You can track what you read by posting here as you read it, log it on a spreadsheet, or on GoodReads. Feel free to share your GoodReads link with the group :)

I will start by pledging to read 10 books in 2025!

    Participants:
    • Starlight, 0/10 Books
    • Cherrim, 0/100 Books
    • gimmepie, 6/15 Books
    • Janp, 10/25 Books
    • PoryKid575, 0/15 Books
    • NipahRika, 0/20 Books

Glad to have you with us once again in 2025! Happy reading!

I'm just going to shoot for 15. If I make it, maybe I'll increase the goal.

Sounds like a good plan to me. The year is young!

I'm determinated to read more books not related to my work this year. Just like last year, because it worked so well. Let's aim at 25 again this year.

Welcome to the latest edition Janp, and good luck with your goal!

I failed my goal miserably last year, but New Year New Me. I pledge to finish 15 books.

Don't worry about it, that was some random peep called CK. 2025 PK got this!

zero promises only hopes for 10 books

No promises needed, just a goal to aim for to give yourself motivation ;)

While I managed to succeed in the past. I'm not sure if that will continue this year. So, I'm only going for 5 books.

I would say whatever number makes you happy counts as success!

I want to read 5 books!

Welcome to the 2025 challenge Yellow!

OK, I ended up not doing it at all last year... >-> I will go ahead and try harder this year with a goal of 10 books!

I am gonna update my count to let's say 20 books! If I end up reading way more I wanna increase it by 5-10. Sorry for the confusion this may cause @Starlight

No problem, you can change your goal at any time, I have put you down for 20!

    Welcome everyone!

I wish you all the best in your reading endeavors for 2025 and can't wait to see how everyone progresses throughout the year!

I have added everyone that has posted so far to the first post. Just holler if anything needs adjusting!

Welcome to the 2025 challenge Yellow!
Hi Starry, you accidentally put the wrong goal for me. My goal for this year is 5 books. :mareepwave:

I'm off to a good start: 3/15 thus far.

I've continued reading through the Re:Zero LNs. This last arc had a rough start, but it ended really strongly. I also read Gone Girl for the first time because someone recommended it to me. I liked the movie when I saw it years back but the book is even better.

    I've updated the list.

Okay, I'm not neglecting this challenge this year! I read all 10 volumes of Blame! Let's talk about it.

    Blame! by Tsutomu Nihei
Blame! is a sci-fi set in a distant future where almost the entire solar system is built up by a giant megastructure and humanity (or rather its descendants, as the series plays a lot with transhumanism) survives in various tribes and clans scattered throughout the megastructure.
The main draw is the scale on which the manga takes place. The megastructure doesn't have an internal order, it's a jumble of different blocks, stairs, pipes, etc. The rooms are more of a by-product than anything else. Alleys stretch for thousands of miles, sometimes ending blindly in a wall, sometimes in an even bigger hole. And it's all beautifully drawn. It really is a joy to look at, even though it filled me with inexplicable fear and nausea.

The story and characters play second fiddle, mostly also because the whole manga spans several millennia. The basic premise is the search for a genetically unmutated human that would bring order to the megastructure. The main character, Killy, travels around the megastructure, visiting various tribes of people, looking for clues that would lead him to an unmutated human. It's fun to see how different tribes of people behave differently depending on where they are and what they are dealing with. For example, there's a tribe that doesn't want to interact with anyone because there are man-eating shapeshifters nearby.

I quite like the retrofuture and biomechanical style, which is strongly reminiscent of Alien and Giger's work in general. Every non-human humanoid character has an uncanny valley vibe to it. It's a little shame that most characters look the same.

Overall, I'd say it's more of a visual experience than anything else, but every panel was worth it.

    [10/25]

We hit February and a mix of starting late, picking a larger book and having less time than I thought I would has left me at ~0.5 of a book so far. I think I'll be able to catch up once I finish my first book!

I've also binge read the entirety of Crows, the manga but as I read it on my phone I don't count it the same so there is reading happening!
