Anybody like the idea of having a VIP battle tournament through D/P/HG/SS, B/W or X/Y in the foreseeable future?
What do you mean the DS servers will close down?I'm not so sure about that given the DS wi-fi servers will close down later this month, which effectively rules out any option that isn't X and Y. And also not everyone's wi-fi even connects to their system successfully, like mine.
I guess you haven't heard about this yet.
I guess the reason they're doing this is to encourage people to use the 3DS and/or Wii U. The latter hasn't been doing very well sales-wise, while the 3DS has been going strong. Many are hoping the upcoming Super Smash Bros. 4 can remedy the bad Wii U sales, probably due to the system lacking huge flagship titles other than the Mario games.
And I pretty much ditched my DS Lite when its hinge got loose lol.
I still own my first game system - a green GameBoy Color. It's a trooper.

As for the wi-fi thing, some people are trying to set up their own servers replicating what Nintendo has. They are hoping to get enough data collected about the system before it shuts down, and eventually they'll want to use custom firmware in the league à la Riivolution, or through hacked ROM's on flashcarts. I'm really looking forward to progress from them. Community servers are already pretty popular amongst dreamcast fans, and https://www.onlineconsoles.com also has a lot of imformation about this.

They won't. The company that hosts their servers are closing up this month as well, so any chance of the servers coming back is next to nil.
