I know that a lot of people hate on noob's fics, and let's be honest, most of that anger is justified, but have you ever seen a noob who has had a good story?

None yet. Then again, hadn't check much of this place out yet. I've been busy with many things.

How long had your longest written rant been?

Don't usually rant. It was a couple paragraphs, though.

How long has your longest chapter been?

Thirty pages in word. Not NE, though.

Sorry but since I'm new, what's a N00b fanfic? Just wondering is all.

A Fan Fic that completely ignores all the basic rules of the English language.

Usually posted by noobs, hence the reason they are called noob Fics.

EDIT: Holly crap, beaten by two people. this makes the 8th time I've been beaten today.

And welcome to the forum.

There hasn't been many but there's been a few.

How long had your longest written rant been?

Never had one, go me!

How long has your longest chapter been?

About six or seven pages, but not my fanfic.

If you could meet one character from a Fan Fiction of yours, who would it be?

I guess Maxi since I don't have many characters to meet. He is very outspoken and not and is said to see things, hehe

I hate school, first day, blaaaah -_-

No.

How long had your longest written rant been?

Ummm...I wanto to say five or six pages?

How long has your longest chapter been?

Not a chapter, but I have an unfinished one-shot that's in excess of forty pages. It was written all in one day (and I wrote a different one-shot directly afterwards in the same day). I don't know if I'll bother to finish it.

In chapterfic terms, somewhere between 27 and 30 pages. I no longer remember.

I know that a lot of people hate on noob's fics, and let's be honest, most of that anger is justified, but have you ever seen a noob who has had a good story?

People seem to be getting the definition of "noob/n00b" and newbie mixed up. A new person is simply a newbie; a noob or n00b is a newbie who also acts a moron. So:

A n00b fanfic is a fanfic written by a n00b, or new writer.
Incorrect. But if that's the definition being used, then of course. Many of them.

A Fan Fic that completely ignores all the basic rules of the English language.
If that's the definition used, all such 'fics suck by definition and therefore no, I have never seen one.

Shame, some random guy bumped Just A Brother by 2 days. xD

Anyway...

I know that a lot of people hate on noob's fics, and let's be honest, most of that anger is justified, but have you ever seen a noob who has had a good story?

It's hard to define "n00b". It can mean some guy with bad grammar, or just a story written by a beginner writer, or something else...but...
Well, I read... Until My Finest Hour. Yeah, that was probably the best fanfiction by anyone I've read in a while.

It's hard to define "n00b". It can mean some guy with bad grammar, or just a story written by a beginner writer, or something else...but...
But Negrek did define "n00b/newbie" correctly. I thought that the terminology wasn't that difficult to grasp, since I quickly picked up on the difference when I first entered the Internet.

To make it easier, I'll expand a bit on Negrek's definitions.

n00b: A n00b is someone who does not see the need for improvement. They act like they snorted some household products, get told off for acting like a rule-breaker, and don't improve their behavior. They become a member that you don't want to see on the forums. There's no hope for their improvement, and you just want to see them banned forever because they made the forum experiences that unpleasant.

newbie: A newbie is someone who does not have experience in the situation that they are in. They join the forum, post their fanfic, and try to see how the place works to get an idea of how to fit in. When someone posts a review on their fanfic that is not 100% praise, they take a look at the critical parts of the review and improve. With time, they become a member that people might look forward to the posts of, and accept the member as a beneficial member of the forum.

With that said, I shall answer all the topics that I missed.

What is your favorite genre to write about? Read about? Why?
I pretty much read anything and everything. For fics, I tend to shy away from fics written about Pokemon canon characters, because those irk on me. Also, aside from the early days of the anime and three specific characters from Johto/Hoenn, I'm horrible at remember who's who. As for game and manga canon, I keep away from those completely since I don't know that canon.

But for the basic genres, I'm open to anything. Romance, OT, action/adventure, sci-fi, fantasy. As long as the story is well-written or the author is well-known, I'll read it.

For writing, I stick with OTs. I understand the hatred that that genre gets from the fandom, but I'm of the opinion that I should write the story that I want to tell. And I'll let everyone else have their opinion. I write OT fics because I want to explore the Pokemon world in a way that I can't completely stick a canon character into the fic and make it work. (Though, it also helps that I write an animeverse AU fic.)

Do you tend to write ideas and/or first drafts of your stories in notebooks or do you use Microsoft Word or a similar program all the time?
It depends on how much time I want to devote to the fic. My OT fic is written in a notebook, where I can easily flip back and forth between old chapters and new chapters to keep my facts straight. As for the short story I'm writing now, I started that in Microsoft Word because it's just a simple short story that I want to finish as soon as I can.

As for the basic ideas themselves, the majority of those just stay in my mind when I think of them, though I do keep a notebook with me at all times. It's just that my mind is now used to working creatively at a set time, so I don't get that many random bursts of inspiration anymore.

How often do you procrastinate when writing/reviewing a fic? And if so, how long does it take you to actually accomplish the task?
Writing? Not often. I poke at the fic I'm writing for a few minutes everyday to get something written. The writing process I enjoy doing because it tends to quiet my mind enough so I can sleep (that and reading).

Reviewing takes me a long while. Most of the time, I can't focus my mind on the story at hand enough to write some sort of review that doesn't just say "I read this! Trust me!" My mind tends to wander when forced to read something critically, so I don't review all that much anymore.

Though I do think I win the prize for how long I had something written and never posted it, though I could have: four years, and still waiting. The fic now sits in an old notebook on my second OSC shelf.

If the anime writers wanted to base an episode/movie on your fan fic, would you give them the rights to?
I'm going to pull a Card and say in twenty years.

Besides, my fic could easily be placed into the animeverse, if it wasn't for the absence of a particular anime character the writers love. Aside from the fact that my fic mentions that "death" topic the anime tries to ignore as hard as it possibly can.

How long does it take you to go over someone's work?
Beta? I tend to procrastinate until the last minute, which is when I rush through and find the most basic mistakes and send the chapter off, hoping I did well enough.

To review? Well, I think poor Sike has been waiting for a review for quite a while now. Plus there's a fic that I want to review for someone, and I'm running out of time for doing so, since... Well, for now I'll keep hush-hush about the whole deal.

Under what conditions do you find it easiest to write?
I can write at any time. But for the thoughts to flow quick enough, I like to listen to some sort of music, sit in my room with the door closed, and periodically throw a certain six-year-old against the wall to get him to shut up enough so I can do something.

Am I one of the few people in this forum who doesn't post fics on SPPf? O_o
I plan to keep PC as the home forum of my Pokemon fics, since circumstances have changed to allow me to follow that plan. SPPf and that other dinky forum only four of us are on is where I lurk to be amused by the posters.

Have you ever had a dream about one of your Fan Fiction characters?
Yes. A few scenes of my fanfic came to me in dreams so vivid that I had to write them down right away because it was that intense. Plus, there have been a few crack-like dreams that only one person knows about because the dream was just bizarre. But I do dream of my fic characters in situations that I either use in the story, or just try to forget but I can't.

If you could meet one character from a Fan Fiction of yours, who would it be?
Pokemon canon: Harrison
Original: Aden

Digimon canon: Takeru (Adventure 02)
Original: I dunno, do the Chosen Children's children count? If not, then Shinrai.

OSC canon: Andrew
Original: Angel

How long had your longest written rant been?
Before I just kind of forgot about it, the rant reached four pages.

How long has your longest chapter been?
I have a short story that reached sixty pages when it finally ended. If I were to go back to edit it, I'm sure it would be a rather long short story.

For a Digimon fic I was writing, there was a chapter that reached thirty-four pages before I just threw my pen against the wall and threw the fic out. But after that, I never had a really long chapter. I try to set some sort of limit.

I know that a lot of people hate on noob's fics, and let's be honest, most of that anger is justified, but have you ever seen a noob who has had a good story?
According to my definitions: No.

n00b: A n00b is someone who does not see the need for improvement. They act like they snorted some household products, get told off for acting like a rule-breaker, and don't improve their behavior. They become a member that you don't want to see on the forums. Hah. It makes me feel better that I'm a newbie not a n00b. :D
Thanks for clearing that up for me!
Oh, Astinus is back. Sort of. Yay.
If there aren't any posts since July, it's a bump, right?
You won't lock Just a Brother for that bubblewrap's bump, right?

Anyways...now to attempt to be on topic... uh...
Well, I've never written any long chapters or had long rants...
I wonder if I've even ever ranted...xD

You won't lock Just a Brother for that bubblewrap's bump, right?
That was by a reviewer, not the author him/herself. Short spammy-like reviews occur all the time, but doesn't result in the thread being closed- unless of course the posts are high in number and aren't about the story at all, and depends on the mod/situation, etc so forth... but no, that wouldn't be a thread-closing bump that, so don't worry.
Plus - Astinus still isn't a mod, just a regular user like us now, popping in every now and then. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE MISERABLE SLIME LIKE US, ASTINUS? ;) ('Course, you don't have to worry about closeing threads now - has its pros I suppose. :P )

To illustrate.

Newb fic versus n00b fic

See the difference? (Readers sensitive about the Kingdom Hearts franchise or just concerned about the English language in general, beware: what you see on the second link may be detrimental for your health)

What is your favorite genre to write about? Read about? Why?

OTs have always been my guilty pleasure within this franchise, but anything with a good horror element or original concept to it will also be loved. Romance fics...aren't really my thing, but virtually anything that's written in an interesting style goes for me. Conversely, a bad or generic writing style drops my interest in a fic, a lot, even if the idea itself isn't bad. :\ (though in the latter case, I usually drop a review to encourage developing the idea)

In writing...pretty much what I enjoy reading. XD I'm horribly undisciplined about it, though, as I'm sure most of the regulars here know by now.

Do you tend to write ideas and/or first drafts of your stories in notebooks or do you use Microsoft Word or a similar program all the time?

Word hates my guts; it has a habit of freezing and/or crashing my computer at the most annoying times, so I don't really use it for anything but basic spelling checks and as a placeholder. The most of my writing is actually done using the advanced reply box. Something about the forum ambiance just helps my writing. XD

How often do you procrastinate when writing/reviewing a fic? And if so, how long does it take you to actually accomplish the task?

As often as the little voices in my head demand. I'm usually a bit more timely with reviews than writing since I have this feeling of owing it to the writer (whereas while writing I'm the only one who's expecting anything), but I can slack off pretty badly with both. Unfortunately, I only make good reviews when I'm in the right mood, so I tend to avoid reviewing when I'm not because the end result will end up lame and non-helpful. Quality over quantity and all that.

If the anime writers wanted to base an episode/movie on your fan fic, would you give them the rights to?

If someone approached me with that, I would demand to know how the heck they got their hands on my unpbulished and not-yet-revised writing. :< Anyway...I'd probably be an absolute prick about the conditions for using my work. No 4kids involvement at any point, under any circumstances, would be the main clause, but I'd also be adamant about not having any of the questionable content censored or - worse yet - edited. The original plotline and character personalities must be adhered to as far as mortally possible. And no fillers, either. I'd require a respectable team of writers and animators to boot.

So, to make a long story short: the anime writers whom I could actually agree with about an anime/movie version of any writing of mine would have to be pretty set on making it happen. XD

Totally seconding Thesis' approach if it's the GX people. <<

How long does it take you to go over someone's work?

As long as it takes. This depends so much not only on the length of what I'm reading but also on the quality of it. The more I have to correct, the longer it will take, obviously, as making corrections in a way that's actually helpful takes a lot more work than pointing out merits. Needless to say, I don't do Beta work; I just stalk certain pieces of fanfiction from time to time, purely on a freelance basis.

Under what conditions do you find it easiest to write?

In front of my computer, with the advanced reply box open, when I'm fairly awake and not overly hungry or thirsty (a little bit of either might actually spur my creativity, though). Having something already written in said box is also a huge boost to my productivity, as few things discourage me quite as much as empty text documents/reply boxes.

Am I one of the few people in this forum who doesn't post fics on SPPf? O_o

Apparently, but you're not the only one if that's what you're implying. I haven't posted anything I would seriously call a fic on any forum yet, but when I will, it will definitely be PC.

Have you ever had a dream about one of your Fan Fiction characters?

Dreams, daydreams, delusions caused by going without sleep for two days' straight of wartime drills and being on nightwatch to top it off. All of these things cause strange and largely unexplored reactions in my mind, resulting in the occasional burst of inspiration. Sadly, I'm highly adept at forgetting a lot of the good things before getting them written. But yes, I have.

If you could meet one character from a Fan Fiction of yours, who would it be?

Motivating my response would be huge spoiler, so pass on this for now. Unless we count RP charactes as fanfiction too, but I don't. =P

How long had your longest written rant been?

Let's just say that I discovered the upper character limit for PMs empirically and leave it at that. I can get very wordy about things when I'm on a roll, as most people who have had an extended VM-convo with me would know.

How long has your longest chapter been?

All of my chapters are still subject to heavy editing, so pass. Personal record for an RP post (which, in my mind, is a hecukva' lot less than a proper fanfic chapter) is something like 10 000 words, 7-and-something pages in Word, using standard font.

I know that a lot of people hate on noob's fics, and let's be honest, most of that anger is justified, but have you ever seen a noob who has had a good story?

That would be a paradox. A n00b fic is bad fanfiction; if a person writes good fanfiction then it's not a n00b fic anymore. =P

Not necessarily.
It could be really extremely meg awesomely well written except for some parts but the n00b gets pissed if whoever reviews points out the bad parts.

PS. I think we need a new mod. Should we have a vote or something?

If the majority of the fic is good then the person writing it is not a n00b writer; just an obnoxious person. n00bness specifically requires the combination of ridiculously defensive and self-important attitude and a complete lack of skill. If one component is missing then we're not dealing with a true n00b anymore.

PS. I think we need a new mod. Should we have a vote or something?

Umm...no? Staff members are not chosen by regular members; staff members are chosen by existing staff. Specifically, higher staff. Once they decide on someone suitable for the job you will have your new mod, but until then you'll just have to survive on the good graces of s-mods and the like.

It must be quiet and dark. I can't have any distractions and that means the internet as well. I also prefer being in a house in the middle of nowhere because then I can't decide to hang out with my friends instead. Oh, and there can't be any other files on the computer/laptop, if I found one I would probably read it.

...

Yeah, I'm really bad when it comes to putting words on a page.

If you could meet one character from a Fan Fiction of yours, who would it be?

Er, either David Rain, to tell him that I'm sorry for getting him to inhale toxic fumes, putting him into cardiac arrest and getting eaten alive by a Muk or Noah Fowl, because he's my favourite character that I've ever written about.

How long had your longest written rant been?
Ahahaha. I don't know, quite long. I could link some people, but I'd probably be banned, rejected and kicked in the shin because of it.

How long has your longest chapter been?
Er, ten pages when I'm writing fan fiction. Thirty-four for my novel I will never finish.

Also, can everyone (okay, not everyone, but the usual suspects) stop whining about the need for a new moderator? The sane members of the forum have posted here, saying that the higher staff will choose a moderator in good time. You guys continuously ranting about it isn't going to help.

And besides, reiterating is is pretty repetitive anyways.

That was an excellent definition.

See the difference? (Readers sensitive about the Kingdom Hearts franchise or just concerned about the English language in general, beware: what you see on the second link may be detrimental for your health)

Those examples, along with Astinus' definition, should be sticked and titled: How not to be a n00b.

I agree. The subject of mod has been brought up several times, and if they had read posts above them then they would already know this:

The staff make the staff decisions at their leisure, the commoners do not need to be involved with such an event.... When a mod gets picked, the mod gets picked and asking about it is pretty useless.

Holy crap, it's a ghost!

I read that second one. I was like "wooooow." And that's not good coming from me.

Just thought I'd toss in a nice, concise post to foil all of the really long ones suddenly popping up. ;)

Nuuu...English 9, I HATE you. You're making me over-analyze my fanfics. ;_; Fuega wasn't supposed to be as philosophical as it's turning out to be! Blame school!

If you could meet one character from a Fan Fiction of yours, who would it be?

Hm. Probably Kai, an upcoming character in My Name Is Fuega...of the entire Fuega cast, he's the only one who isn't insane, aggressive, angsty, or dead. Plus he's just a nice guy.

Spoiler:

Funny, I'd expect him to be the first to have at least one of those character traits. XD *nuked*
