I wouldn't say it is just memorizing moves. If you try to play your opening and don't adjust to what your opponent plays, you are going to lose. If I am setting up a London, for example, and black rushes their queen out to B6 and I don't develop any counter play, black can have a brutal attack on your queen side and you will lose material. Sure you want to have your mainline theory memorized but there is plenty of reaction involved as well.

Don't get me wrong, I love chess, and used to love all that jazz, but I just got bored of it. The most fun I've ever had playing chess, has been playing against people that are rank amateurs, and haven't studied the game. I am not going to be the next Judit Polgar, so I figured, I may as well have fun :)
