Harriet Tubman new face of the US $20 bill

African-American civil rights activist and abolitionist Harriet Tubman will become the new face of the $20 bill, replacing former President Andrew Jackson, U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew announced today, while Alexander Hamilton will remain on the $10 bill.

The changes are part of an effort by the Obama administration to put a woman on paper currency and Lew said that along with Tubman becoming the face of the $20 bill, images of women and civil rights era leaders will also be added to bills.

"We are putting a woman on the 20, the 10, and the 5 and we are going to move as quickly as we can get all of these bills out there," Lew said in an interview with ABC News.

The new designs will start to go into effect in 2020, the centennial of the passage of the 19th Amendment that gave women the right to vote.

The Obama administration had earlier announced plans to put a woman on the $10 bill, but the renewed interest in Hamilton, the nation's first treasury secretary, pushed the government to abandon that idea and instead target the $20 bill for a redesign.

"This is I think an outcome that Hamilton supporters can be pleased with," Lew said.

Hamilton, who has been featured on the $10 bill since 1929, has recently risen in popularity due to the hit Broadway musical that bears his name. The play's creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda won the Pulitzer Prize for drama this week. Miranda put pressure on Lew to keep Hamilton on the front of the bill, and Tweeted about a one-on-one meeting they had last month.

But not everyone is pleased with Lew's decision.

A number of high-profile women today penned an open letter to the secretary asking him to select a woman for the $10 note because a redesign of the $20 bill will take longer to complete, possibly up to 10 years.

"As a country, it is about time we put our money where our mouth is in the fight to support women," states the letter signed by, among others, Ellen DeGeneres, Katie Couric and Gloria Steinem.

They also argued that the interim plan to have a woman included on the back of the $10 bill is more an insult than a compromise.

"Could there be a better metaphor for the second-class status that continues to limit our girls?" the letter reads.

Lew defended the decision, pointing out that more images of women will now be shown on bills than earlier planned.

"On the back of the ten, we are going to tell the story of women's suffrage, it is going to have the leaders of the suffrage movement, culminating in a rally on the steps of the Treasury Department building," he told ABC News. "On the back of the five, we are going to have an image of Marian Anderson and Eleanor Roosevelt."

What do you think of all this?

I couldn't remember who was on the $20 and pulled out my wallet only to find that I don't have a $20 bill =/
fortunately the article says its jackson

Anyway this doesn't seem like a hugely important thing in regards to equal rights but there's no reason to not do it so go for it. Why some people are taking issue with Hamilton being kept on the $10, idk. Be glad they're changing something.

It is President Andrew Jackson the man who killed the fed Before he died in his bed he said that famous Quote. "I killed the bank" He is a national hero and thanks to him the United States thrived from gold mining, to oil digging, as well as automobiles. It was a clean nation where you could take your gold and get your IOU ( paper money ) and vice versa. Which means you could get $100 dollars worth of gold if you had $100 dollars right now. If it was not for him the nation would be in a worst state of debt then places in Europe right now.

So remember it so. He is more famous and important then "Harriet Tubman". She was just one of many organizers of the "Underground railroad" and wore most of her clothing on her body. She was a thin-woman but is depicted as the stereotypical "Aunt Jemima". She was caught and hung eventually. Again all Tubman really did was take part in moving slaves from the South to the North. It is not known how important she was really as many people was participating and only recently ( after WWII ) did many Original American Negros traveled from the South to the cities. Before WWII the South probably had more black people then most northern cities had at all. In fact the only other place with the most amount of people of African decent was Brooklyn.

images of women and civil rights era leaders will also be added to bills.
It means nothing at all for women as the Iron Maiden said "I am a woman and there is nothing else I can be".

We have anti-privacy and anti-freedom of speech and people feel we need to waste money on alterning prinkts of something that is not less then the value of a five dollars???

To be honest, I do not know how this will further equal rights.

Its the value of the dollar that matters- not the picture. I do not care who is on the bill. I care how much that bill can buy stuff.

If they had to choose anyone, Harriet Tubman was a pretty good choice.

I am honestly happy that Jackson is getting kicked off the $20. He passed the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and forced many Native American tribes off their land that was promised to them by a previous treaty and they were forced west of the Mississippi. Many Native Americans died while en-route to find a new place to settle. (Trail of Tears) He also didn't pay any heed to the Supreme Court after the act was ruled unconstitutional.

And Jackson caused an economic depression by closing the national bank and made it so that land could only be bought with silver and gold, which was scarce. It made paper money worth basically nothing.

Harriet Tubman risked her life actively helping escaping slaves through the underground railroad and then after the Civil War, she continued on as not only an advocate for African Americans, but also for women's rights as well. She was an important figure in the movement for women suffrage. She fought for people's rights. I am happy that she is going to be on the $20.

Harriet Tubman was not caught and hung. She died at the age of 91. Not really sure about your statement about African American population though.

It's pretty funny because the US has more debt as a percentage of its GDP than the EU average and than every member state (24 out of 28) but Portugal, Italy, Greece and Ireland.

Also gold is a fiat currency as inherently worthless as a piece of paper- the only reason why anybody will buy gold is to sell it later down the road, not to use it for anything actually useful (other than fashion, but again, "useful"), and its value depends solely on the trust of other people and how much someone else is ready to pay for it at that given point in time. In fact, you can argue that the value of the US dollar is more steady than that of gold- the mineral's value has wildly jumped up and down for no reason during the last century.

Tubman was a war spy working for the Union who rescued more than 700 people from slavery, fought an immoral law and spent her latest years fighting for women's suffrage. In other words, she spent her entire life fighting for human rights while saving hundreds of lives along the way. If you think that isn't worthy of recognition, well, that's your opinion. But having a woman in a note is important enough, and Jackson was probably the most undeserving one, so... Nothing much else to say.

We have anti-privacy and anti-freedom of speech and people feel we need to waste money on alterning prinkts of something that is not less then the value of a five dollars???

News: that there are other issues going on doesn't mean we have to drop everything else entirely. This reminds me of politicians who say "we need to create jobs!!! Why is the Government passing regulations about Co2 and that instead of Creating Jobs???" and then go back to their states to pass unconstitutional discrimination laws that destroy jobs.

Anyway, as you said, changing the print will cost about five dollars. I think the country can spare that change.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Besides, Andrew Jackson hated Paper Money anyway, why would you even leave him on the bill in the first place lmao. I think it's a perfectly fine way to give some recognition.

Spoiler:

These images of Harriet are greatly exaggerated. It will not get justice for the men and women terrorized by unlawful conduct of police officers or citizens at all. It is a slap in the face to the people. Irregardless of what Tubman did all she is remember for is being anti-slavery abolished. It is like reading about Anne Frank. A whole bunch of it is stretching the truth and filler.

What does the war against police brutality have to do with someone being acknowledged on a bill of currency?

Seriously it feels like we are going backwards by changing the face of any Presidential Bill. I imagine one day finding a picture of somebody with a bunch of $20's neatly stuck in there mouth. That is why it is stupid. It is a banker trick. It is like a slap in the face to the consumer.

My money is worth less then Andrew Jackson who secured my future over a woman who basically did what many people were doing during the civil-war. I mean great she is a woman and even had a little word here or there but the man power that was required was extremely important in making the Union win. Tell me what did Miss Tubman do

Speaking of stupid. Abraham Lincoln sold his slaves ( his wife had slaves ) before he freed the slaves. Abraham Lincoln also dis-promoted the melting pot of people between races.

Harriet Tubman might have played her part but I am certain there was more men on the scene then women. They only mention her a lot more because she is a woman.

The history books talks down about her like an animal as well.

What.

For starters, Banker trick? Your $20 bill is going to be worth the same and do the same thing at the end of the day no matter who's face is on it. What are you on about?

What did Harriet Tubman do. Alright, let's talk about what Harriet Tubman did. Harriet Tubman fought for freedom of slaves. Harriet Tubman also served the in Union Army when the Civil War went down. Harriet Tubman ALSO fought for Women's rights. All of these things in a time where Women were, for the most part, pretty much irrelevant in the eyes of society. Andrew Jackson aided in the genocide of Native Americans when he enacted the Trail of Tears, as well as plunge the country right back into debt despite him paying it off two years prior. Also, mind you, Harriet Tubman was leading slaves to freedom long before the Civil War had even broke out.

The Secretary of Treasury announced back in June that the $10 bill was going to be reprinted with a Woman, because he wanted a Woman to be represented, and Harriet Tubman is one of the most influential Women in U.S history. Simple. What you just said to me literally makes zero sense, and I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm actually kinda pissed that I had to read that, because you are basically saying that a Man deserves to be on a dollar bill more than a Woman does. And I still want to know what Police Brutality has to do with any of this discussion.

Okay so I guess these are novelty dollars and only for a limited time. So these dollars are being treated as quarters. Okay no problem. I was going to write a response but at least this news makes it okay.

No, it means that all $20 notes printed in the coming decades will have Tubman in the front and Jackson in the back. And all the old Jackson-only notes will be slowly removed until only Tubman-Jackson remain in 20 years or so.

It's not a "special collector's edition", is the new, only, definitive design of the $20 note until further notice.

So Andrew Jackson and Harriet Tubman will both be on the $20. Why are people complaining?

I'm happy that nobody's touching Hamilton because he made the case for a strong central government and that agrees with my politics.
