5th Gen Official English Name Discussion

Clay fits with the Ground-type preference in my opinion. Skyla was too obivious for me; had to fit a Flying pun in there. Burgh just...augh...someboby will need to find how that relates to the bug-type and/or the Japanese name...sounds arkward. Brycen sounds cool (pun intended), and Drayden is cooler. Out of all the Elite Four names, however, Grimsley just sounds corny. I get they wanted to make the name sound dark, but that just screams 'Scooby Doo' to me...don't know why, it just does.

I think Alder suits the champion name, it reminds me of Elder...like someone with a lot of knowledge.

I don't suppose the name Shauntal has a reference to "Shaun of the living dead" does it?

That's something that struck me when I first saw it....but she's a trainer of ghosts not zombies. :p

Hm... Alder sounds to be like that the "A" is actually part of his Japanese name, while the rest seems based off "Elder". Which really doesn't fit who he really is. He's not an elderly person. lol He should've been called something like "Andre" or something, wouldn't that have been a better name? xD

Hm... good to hear that another town name has been announced. I wish to know what the English name of the hometown is. Because... I'm pretty sure Accumula Town wasn't on the leaked English town names. xD

Alder is the name of the champion. I think it's a good name. Adeku -> Alder.

I really like the names for the E4. It suits them, although I'm confused about Shauntal.

Shauntal. As in haunting Ghosts.

Anyway, I decided to spoiler the E4 for myself and I'm in more love with Grimsley. He's so dark and sneaky >=3

...for some reason, haunt wasn't obvious and I just thought it was so it sounded similar to the Japanese name. XD; Makes me like the name more!

  • Shauntal (Ghost-type) - I like this one. It fits how she looks and it fits the type she primarily uses.
  • Grimsley (Dark-type) - ... Way too predictable. I don't really like it. ]:
  • Marshal (Fighting-type) - XD; Stupid pun, but a fitting name I'm almost sad to say.
  • Alder (Champion) - I might be alone on this, but I actually love this name! It's got that wise feel to it, and it just manipulates his Japanese name. Better than anything I could come up with for this man. ^^;
Overall, I'm fine with these names. I'm just sad for poor Giima... Giima was a way better name. :x

I didn't expect Shauntal for Giima although after reading an explanation of the name I don't think it's too bad.
And yes, Grimsley does seem predictable but, I still think it's good.
Oh, and the name Marshal just reminds me of Eminem (even though that's probably not the reference for it...).

I was utterly disapoointed in Dewott and Samurott. Dewott of all names?!!? Daikenki was way cooler than Samurott. Samurott sounds like 'something that rots'. -.-'

Purrloin and Liepard are still ok, if not a bit better. The monekys have nice names too. Yamask totally puzzles me. "Ya, mask." Seriously? Lampent's name could have been better if they had put in more effort or at least let us fans give them our opinions. I totally have a better name for Lampent(which I'll tell you if you ask, VM me if you like but whatever). Chandelure doesn't sound very original, I think I've heard it somewhere on TV or books, but....never mind. Frillish is just stupid, how it anyway is it frilly? Stoutland makes me think of Scotland, but it could be because of Unova's relation to the Western side. And I really don't know where they got the inspiration for Krookodile, I'm sure everyone else was expecting much better, well I for one expected since I've high expectations of Pokemon as I was believe they were the best. xD

Diamond1304, this is actually the right thread. The last thread was for the titles of "Black and White". This one is for the Pokemon English names.

And Samurott is totally awesome. :(

(sorry, had to remove a few parts to make a few points)
Yamask is a combination of "yami" (the Japanese word for darkness) and "mask," what it's carrying.

I think Chandelure is original because not only is it a chandelier, it uses its flames to lure in opponents.

Just look at Frillish. It's supposed to look like it's wearing European clothing, which was very frilly back then.

Wait...what? How did my post pop up here? Didn't I delete it?

Yeah, I know Samurott is kinda cool but I still preferred Daikenki. :/

I moved your repost to this thread (which was originally posted in the other thread regarding "Black" and "White").

But Daikenki makes no sense to an English speaking audience, whereas Samurott creatively uses samurai and otter. :) Which I think is pretty awesome.

Well...yeah. Maybe they could have included the word 'dignity' in its name since that's what's species name in the Pokedex. I still dislike Dewott, its unusual shortness of a name irks me(Oshawott is longer than Dewott by 2 letters! xD)

Wth i cant believe they changed the name of the champion ...Really you just got beat a guy name Alder? i rather get my but kicked by Adeku its just sooo much better. lol maybe because i pronounce it like count doku in star wars

I think Mijumaru should have been called Dewott and Futachimaru should have been called Oshawott. More fitting, since Oshawott sounds more badass than puny Dewott. Samurott is cool.

If it was up to me I would of called them (on the right):
Futachimaru -> Dewott -> Samurott
Daikenki -> Samurott -> Daiott (Daioh [King] + Otter)

But, I'm fine with the established names. But, Dewott feels out of place when the "oshaw" and "samur" having Japanese basis compared to the others names.
