> A KARP THAT COULD - PART 1

The day was drifting into a peaceful late afternoon and Raph had finally managed to calm down after his ordeal. He lay on his back atop a rather comfy, soft wooden bottom... floating atop the serene waters of Route 2's lake. The sky above was gleaming down at him with pearlescent blue, the wind was calm and he could hear it whistle just above him along the edge of the small boat he had taken out onto the still freshwater pool. It was beautifully relaxing, perfectly calm, not an ounce of concern or ruckus. Finally, peace. "This is more like it..." He mumbles to himself, shuffling a little to settle in even more comfortably in his newly found utopia. Just beyond the wooden edge of the boat he heard the occasional splash of water to break the raw monotony of the silence he had found. Bounding up and out of the lake, Vito was eagerly flopping away along the top of the waters surface. He was a water type after all, it was obvious in hindsight that the small, rotund pokémon would enjoy this kind of environment. Raph had quickly decided that, Vito was a little too much for him most of the time... only when he stopped rolling around at the speed of sound did Raph find him amenable. Otherwise? He was exhausting to have around.

Not that that was Vito's fault mind you, but Raph couldn't help his less energetic nature either.

So this seemed the perfect solution for both of them. Raph explained to Vito to stay near, plopped the pair of them down somewhere where Raph could relax and Vito could burn off some of his endless amounts of steam, then they went about their business. It was strange, neither of them interacted much during this time, but as Raph was content and he watched his new pokémon soar over his resting place with a big grin every once and a while, he felt like he was really bonding with Vito. He still held fast to his belief that he and Vito were a real mismatch of personalities, yet they shared a common trait of acceptance... and this acceptance lead them to within the course of the day, form something of a budding friendship. Once an understanding was reached, even opposites could get-

A surge of water bursts up from the liquid below, into the boat and crashes into Raph's face. He barely flinches, but after a momentary sigh opens his eyes as he feels a rocking at the edge of the boat. As he turns his head, he sees Vito sitting there, a sly smirk spreading across his snout. "Sphee!" He exclaims gleefully before diving into the water below.

Well... maybe they still needed some work.

Raphael pulls himself to sit upwards in the boat with a groan. How long had he been lying there even? After the dreadfully tiring experience prior, one that had stressed him out to no end, he had decided to take it easy but... maybe he was overdoing it? After all how long would the situation at the station take to resolve really? Maybe he was pushing his luck.

T H U D

The boat shakes a little and Raph nigh stumbles a little, he furrows his brow in light irritation soon to follow and calls out to the water. "Vito...? Look water gun is one thing but if I fall in and my dex is ruined then we're not going anywhere fast you know?" He doesn't raise his voice, but the irate tone is enough to get Vito to surface with a confused look... some fifteen feet away. Raph raises an eyebrow in confusion in response. "Okay, you're not that fast... so how did you..?"

"...karp."

"Eh?"

In response to the sound, Raph turns his head eastwards, to see another water type gazing up at him, it has a rather dumbfounded expression, as if it fails to understand what has stopped its progress while swimming. With furrowed eyes it glances at the boat before it, then its expression slowly shifts up to Raphael, meeting his own gaze curiously. "...um, hello."

"...karp!" With a sudden and rather excessive show of force, the fish pokémon panics. A magikarp, just lovely. It's body flails out of the water aggressively, splashing with panic and vigor in any which way it can and should please, water is sent flying up from multiple directions... soaking Raph as he flails and shouts in protest. Throughout bouts of water he catches glances of the Magikarps body, shimmering orange as expected, but a pink scar mars its white tail. Unusual for such a pokémon to be marked by battle, but he doesn't have much time to consider those implications.

Finally managing to clear the vessel and leaving Raph thoroughly soaked through, the Magikarp awkwardly flops back into the water and begins swimming rapidly away from the boat, deep beneath the surface of the water, in the direction of the Westmost shore... where a large enough gathering of people seemed to have formed.

A light bulb metaphorically sparks above Raph's head... and he lightly smacks a fist against his soaking wet palm with a half-hearted "Alright, fine." before picking up the boats oars and getting ready to return, slowly, to shore. As he did his best to ignore Vito's ongoing laughter over his now soaking wet appearance, he thought back to a newsletter he had received in his mailbox that very morning... he hadn't thought much of it at the time, the ceremony was on his mind, but there had indeed been talk of an event involving fishing, happening right here on the lake of route 2.

How convenient... if that little almost-sushi thought it could get away with drenching him for no reason, he'd soon prove it wrong. That sounded like a pretty 'trainer-y' thing to do right? He'd actually be doing something productive, rather than worrying about missing the train.

The fact that fishing was pretty low effort, as far as productive activities went, hadn't factored into his decision of all... probably.

Chapter 1-3 / I choose you!!

"Here we are."

Pia stood in front of the Pokémon Laboratory building with her newly acquired Pichu at her side. She tugged at her backback and took a deep breath. It sure looked dark inside and the fact that it was uncomfortable for the girl could be read on her face. Of course Sonia had mentioned that but now that she was here it was...

"Pichu!" The yellow mouse Pokémon screeched at her, interfering her line of thoughts.

"Ah yes, Sonia asked us to catch her Yamper. It's sucking up all the power from the Pokémon laboratory." Pia explained. She grabbed her backpack and took out Pichu's Pokéball from between her shizzles and dazzles. "I'm not going to bother you with this so please go back inside your ball."

"Chu!" Pichu refused. She ran around in circles on all fours around Pia and ended up stopping right in front of her making Pia sigh at the sight and put the Pokéball away. Did Sonia hate her or something? Pia knew she came off easy with getting a Pokémon without having to pay for it so helping Sonia out with an issue she was having was the least she could do but why did it have to be this? Sonia knew that her little Yamper wasn't fond of the girl at all so why her of all people? Why not... Valerie? Valerie is super friendly and Yamper loved that girl a lot.

While Pia was spacing out and kept on wondering why she was stuck with this kind of request, Pichu nonchalantly walked inside the dark building without the girl noticing.

"What do you think? Should we go ask someone else to do it?" The blonde girl asked, not really believing her partner's ability to tame a hyper active dog Pokémon. After noticing that the tiny ball of floof that was more head than body had disappeared, she hastily looked around her. She glanced at the door that was halfway open, the only thing between her and that eternal darkness in front of her. It couldn't be... Did Pichu walk in on her own? Why would she do that? Now Pia has to go inside. If something happened to this tiny Pokémon now she'd get an earful from Sonia.

That's what she thought but as she got closer to the door, her body froze in place on the thought that she'd had to enter that dark place. She took a deep breath. And another one... Then she rummaged in her bag for the cheap flashlight that she bought earlier and turned it on before going in. The flashlight made everything a little less scary at least.

"P-Pichu...?" Pia trembled as she went inside, still she searched for the tiny Pokémon, forgetting entirely about her quest but trying to keep her cool. Her face was turning as pale as freshly washed white sheets but she still kept her head held high. At least... until something zoomed right past her. Pia screamed and turning the flashlight in the direction she heard the zooming stop but just as she thought that she saw something, the flashlight flickered and eventually turned off.

"N-No! It got jammed! That stupid boy broke the flashlight!" Pia whisper screamed in panic. She gave the flashlights a few taps. For a second it seemed like it was working again but that hope was short lived. The girl was so startled from the sounds she heard somewhere further inside the establishment that her legs gave out. Was Sonia keeping ghost Pokémon here?! Ghost Pokémon were an absolute nightmare! Pia hated dark places! She hated Ghost Pokémon!

"YAAAMMMMMM!!" Pia heard something coming straight at her. The sound was echoing through the entire building and was so terrifying that the girl broke out in tears.

"Someone! S-Save me..." Pia whimpered. She grabbed her ears to deafen the sound but it became louder and louder. Pia felt her heart explode and salty water drops rolled down her cheeks, staining the jeans she was wearing as her entire body trembled. All sort of thoughts crossed her mind. They had learned about ghost Pokémon in the trainer school. Some really had malicious intend and Pia has always been terrified of them! What were they going to do with her? Was this really going to be her end?! But she still had so many things she wanted to do! She still wanted to become rich and live that luxury life! She had not even gotten the chance to leave Wedgehurst yet. How unlucky!

Just when Pia thought she was about to pass out, the loud sound that had been coming for her stopped. It sounded like something else crashed into it just before it could reach the girl.

"Chu Chu!" Pia heard a familiar sound snuggling up to her and resting on her lap. A glow started to surround the cheeks of the creature, becoming a night lamp in this darkness and revealing Pichu to be the creature snuggling up to the poor scared girl. Pia was stunned and her sobbing immediately stopped at the sight of Pichu hugging her to comfort her. The cheeks of the small Pokémon gave off enough light that they could see a the Yamper they were searching for just a little bit away from them. It looked a bit upset.

"Y-You came to... t-to?" Pia stuttered with her eyes focussed on Pichu. All the creature did was nod and snuggle even more. Pia just couldn't help herself anymore and hugged the tiny Pokémon while crying even more. What an adorable little creature this Pokémon was! But then she was met with a tiny shock.

"Ouch!" Pia screeched, holding the Pokémon away from her face. Pichu had it's ears down and was prepared to be scolded but instead Pia smiled at her. "We're going to have to work on that." She just said, making the Pichu so happy that once it was put on the ground, it started running in circles.

"Chu Chu!"

Pia glanced over to the Yamper. While she and Pichu had been reconvening, the dog Pokémon had gotten away! Probably to break some more havoc. Pichu and Pia exchanged glances and nodded.

"Let's do a tag team!"

"Pichu!!"

Pia got up from the ground, brushed the dust of her clothes and wiped away the tears she had been shedding. It was time to show this Yamper whose boss!

"Pichu! I... I don't know what your attacks are but do... something that lights up the place!" Pia commanded the Pichu who happily went into battle for her. The Pichu used a thundershock to and surely enough the Yamper was visible in the corner just behind the desk. "Let's close him in!"

"Chu!" Pichu gave her a trusting smirk and ran towards the Yamper with full speed before stopping right before it and wagging her tail in front of it, it was a tail whip to lower the Yamper's defenses. It got succesfully distracted and while it tried to escape the other way with the speed of light, it was caught by Pia in her backpack.

"Where do you think you are going?" Pia asked the little troublemaker. She grabbed it by it's neck and pulled it out of her bag. "Are you done now? Will you give up?" She asked it. It seemed like it was far from done playing but it yielded. "Good boy. Let's bring you back to your owner. You really made quiet some trouble for her so you better be good now!"

As Pia kept lecturing the poor dog Pokémon, the light was turned on behind her. It seemed like catching the Yamper was enough to make it stop sucking up all the electricity.

"I see you were able to catch him." A familiar voice sounded behind the trio. The quest giver, professor Sonia, had just arrived the scene. "I heard screaming so I thought I'd come check but it seems you have everything under control."

"Of course. What do you take me for." Pia said with a sheepish grin spreading across her peach coloured lips. "Also, you must have heard that wrong. There was no screaming." Pia claimed proudly. Sonia briefly glanced at the Pichu beside the girl but it was crossing her arms and shaking her head rather quickly. She gave a thumbs up to assure everything was fine.

"I see. Well, I promised a reward so here goes." the ginger haired girl walked up to take Yamper of Pia's hands who had been licking her hands this entire time now. Yamper seemed relieved yet sad at the same time. He wanted to play a lot more! Poor Yamper!

"This is a magnet." Sonia placed a small magnet in the hands of Pia. She was visibly confused.

"Wait. No money? Just a little magnet? I went through all of that and you're not giving me money?" Pia whined.

"I thought nothing happened and everything was under control?" Sonia asked.

"Of course it was! But... Money would've been great..." Pia pouted and crossed her arms.

"Not everything is about money, Pia! Money can't buy happiness!" Sonia sighed.

"It sure does make things a lot better though." Pia playfully grinned and held up the magnet. "So what does this do, professor~?"

"If you give this to your Pichu, it will boosts it's electric type moves." Sonia scraped her throat. Pia was sure able to get her on edge but the girl meant well. The professor only now took the time to take a look around her laboratory. "What happened here?!" Sonia shouted. Her desk had been misplaced, her documents were all over the floor, cabinets with open doors with files that were almost falling out with a few that were already on the floor and it seems like Yamper had knocked over one of Sonia's experiments. Sonia legit looked like she was about to faint.

"Ahhh! Look at the time! I really need to get going if I want to catch that train. Bye Sonia! Thank you for giving me Pichu!" Pia swinged her backpack back on her back where it belonged and ran off to the door. "Let's go, Milla!"

Pichu blinked a few times. Had her new trainer just given her name?

"Hey, don't space out! We're late. Let's go!" Pia winked at the creature. "Milla~" She called out again.

Milla had a cute laugh all across her face upon hearing her new name. It was so happy, it jumped around a few times before running to her trainer. Pia held out an arm for her on which she could jump and so Milla did.

With her new Pichu on her shoulder, Pia left on her journey. All that Sonia could do was smile at the pair and shake her head.

Chapter 1-2: Adding Up

Clovis walked... well, angrily walked. After the incident with the stone steps, Clovis just silently trodded towards the tall grass of Route 2. Cortex, meanwhile, was observing his surroundings as he sat on Clovis' shoulder that DOESN'T hurt. "Alright, here we are... after reminding myself of the layout of Route 2, there should be some Dark-types we can battle against. It's a fair ways down to the lab, but it will do some good to take a look at any options for capture. Then, we may just find a suitable catch for our capable team." Blipbug hummed in agreement, still eyeballing to and fro. Passing any unnecessary Pokemon Clovis deemed, he made his way to just past the small, stone bridge. That was, ALMOST past the bridge before suddenly-

"rreeEEEEE"

"Huah!" A monochrome blur rushed between Clovis' feet, nearly tripping him over. A wily, agitated Zigzagoon was biting and hissing at the trainer. "Alright Cortex, let's show my intellect at work, as you trounce this animal." Blipbug looked at him with a questioning look. "Our intellect at work, of course." With a nod, Blipbug slipped off, and landed before the rambunctious Pokemon. But just as Blipbug hit the ground, Zigzagoon jumped around, and began to kick up sand violently. Both Blipbug and Clovis tried to shield their eyes, with Clovis crying, "Agh, little weasel! Cortex, Struggle Bug!"

Blipbug shook in concentration, before a surge of green wisps left it's noggin, striking at Zigzagoon repeatedly. "rrRRREEEE," screamed the Zigzagoon. It turned at Cortex, and went at a full body Tackle attack. It sent him flying at his trainer, making Clovis fall over onto his butt with a, "OW, damnit. Little cretin. Cortex, Struggle Bug again!" And again, green streaks of energy flew out to strike the Zigzagoon. "Rrrrrr," it growled, before another hard tackle. And again, Cortex was hurled a bit by the heft of the attack. "Cortex! I refuse to let us lose to a rabid weasel! Use Recover!" With a soft glow, Cortex's injuries and scrapes seemed to have vanished, before he rose tall. Zigzagoon tilted it's head, angrily snarling in confusion. "Now, Struggle Bug!" With a final sweep of striking green light, the Zigzagoon was knocked out. "Excellent, excellent Cortex! Come here, and I'll heal you with a potion."

Slowly, Cortex crawled a bit before it stopped, looking at something in the grass. "Cortex? What is it? Is the Zigzag... oh." Standing up and patting the dirt off his bum, Clovis noticed that there may had been a reason why the Zigzagoon was so furious. Without even realizing it, a mushed berry of some sort culd be seen. Both Clovis and Cortex fell silent. "... Oh, no." Lifting one foot, Clovis sighed, and confirmed berry on his right shoe. "Well Cortex, come along, we better get moving," Clovis muttered, before scooping the Larva in his arms as they headed back towards the edge of Wedgehurst Town.

On the way, Cortex noticed a small, flapping creature following behind them. "Maybe if we get enough distance, it'll forget we stepped on it's lunch. But for now... we really should catch something appropriate for my team... but what?" Clovis thought this, unaware of the flapping follower. "Rrr! Rrrrr!" Cortex hummed. "What is it, Cortex? There's no way that-"

peck, peck, peck

"Ow, ow, ow, what?! What is that? Cortex, Struggle Bug!" Clovis called, without realizing he may as well be holding dynamite in his hands. But, be that as it may, Cortex complied, and green streaks of energy flew again. "HoooOooOt!" A tiny "thud" could be heard, before Clovis spun around, rubbing his head with his free hand and glaring at the rude creature that attacked him. A Hoothoot, knocked down by the surprise attack, began hooting angrily, pointing it's wing at Clovis specifically, then back at the way they came from. Trying to communicate something.

"Well, Cortex, look here! A Hoothoot, a fine addition to our team! Let's teach this little rabble-rouser some manners! Again, Struggle Bug!" Cortex sighed, but complied once more. Green streaks, again, hit the Hoothoot. To little avail. "Unfortunately, this is an uphill fight, but great intelligence can overcome any challenge!" As he said that, a grin as wide as the berry puddle he left could be seen on his face.

peck, peck, peck

"Augh! Not again! Wait... Cortex? CORTEX!"

Cortex was being attacked by a series of Peck attacks. Poor Cortex was hurting, but this gave Clovis an idea. "Cortex, strike again with Struggle Bug!" Despite the great pain, Cortex understood what Clovis was thinking. A surge of green energy shot from Cortex's noggin, hitting Hoothoot all at once, and knocking it prone. "Quick, Re- Oww... my head...." The pain on Clovis' skull persisted, stopping his command... and starting to annoy the young man. "No, this is it." Without thinking, Clovis pulled out a Pokeball, pressed it, and threw the ball at the bird. "This is it, owly," Clovis groaned with frustration.

"Hoo... hoo- Hoo?!" Hoothoot stirred, seconds before the ball conked it on the head and began the process. The Hoothoot hooted angrily before it was converted to light, and sucked into the ball. The ball, then, fell to the ground.

"Hoh, Cortex! Here's the moment of our time!" On his hands and knees, Clovis stuck his face right up to the ball, observing it shake repeatedly.

"One shake... rnnggh, two shakes! RNNGH, I COMMAND YOU-"

pop

"HOOOOT!" The Hoothoot angrily flew out, and just attacked Clovis again, pecking his head repeatedly. "AUGH, NO, OWOWOWOW!" Ripping another ball, Clovis yelled, "GET IN THE BALL, OWLY." Clovis bonked it against Hoothoot's head, capturing it again.

shake, shake.... shake, shake....

ding

Silence... as silent as can be in a rural area with wildlife and being outside a cozy town. But still, silence fell between trainer and Pokemon. Cortex has rubbing his poor head with his little nubs, Clovis looked on with panicked eyes. His eyes glued onto the ball, not realizing Hoothoot was actually caught. Well, until the gears clicked.

"Haaahahaha! Excellent work, Cortex! See, our brilliance overcame this challenge of type difference!" He swiped the ball, and clipped it to his belt. "Come, Cortex, let's get you properly healed. Then, we can wait at the station and have a respite... I know I need it." Wearily, Clovis and Cortex in tow, they began the short trek to the Pokemon Center, before they went to wait for the train at the station.

Wedgehurst Town

As the hours of mid-morning had rolled in, Simon's favorite café, The Boofy Bean, was bustling with activity from weekend diners eager to grab breakfast or brunch. The invigorating aroma of the shop's coffee was just what Simon needed to get his day started, though he found himself as more of a tea person in terms of taste. It seemed Scatterbug and Caterpie were just the same, as the pair munched lightly on the tea leaves and mint he'd gotten with his drink, resulting in a rather under-steeped tea. Simon dug into the slice of pound cake he'd ordered.

"Sho the plan ish, righ'-" he began, before swallowing the cake, "-we take the next train as close to Motostoke as we can. Then make our way through the wild area, through the city, and officially sign up for the league. Then we can start collecting badges!"

"Sca?" his Scatterbug asked, tilting its head.

Simon took another piece of the cake. "Nah, my fam's way up in Ballonlea." he replied, and swallowed. Realizing the two Pokemon knew nothing about the world past the tall grass of Wedgehurst, he added, "It's a nice place actually, full of little critters like you guys. Hopefully you'll be able to meet my old man before winter comes around, he knows some great hiking spots." He paused for a moment, his smile fading slightly. Home wasn't always fun to talk about, and it reminded him of too much every time he did. But hey, they're the reason I'm doing this. he thought. He took a sip of his bland tea, taking a little too long before putting it down.

His short train of thought was broken by a gentle tap on his shoulder. "Pardon me, my boy?" He looked up and saw a short elderly woman smiling back- Gramma Tina, a friendly local who everyone knew from her seasonal bake sales.

"Oh! Hi there, Mrs. Rowe!" Simon waved, his two Pokemon politely chirping out a greeting.

"That's Gramma Tina to you, Simon," Tina scolded playfully, "Sorry to bother, darling. May I borrow this chair from you?" She gestured towards the empty chair at Simon's table.

"Of course! I'll do you one better- let me take it to your table." Simon smiled, getting up.

The old woman chuckled. "And they say chivalry is dead."

Simon placed the chair in front of her table and invited her to sit. "You know, gramma, if there's one thing that would stop me from leaving Wedgehurst, it's your winter cinnamon buns."

"Oh, don't be silly!" TIna replied. "My cinnamon buns aren't going anywhere. The thrill of youthful adventure, now that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, Simon. That's what I told my Timmy, and I hope he remembers it."

"Oh, your son Tim? How's he doing?"

"He got himself a nice job at a nursery near Motostoke last week. He's following in his dad's footsteps, and I couldn't be prouder of him." Tina smiled. "I'll be writing him a letter to wish him well. A little old fashioned, but there's more charm in snail mail, don't you think?"

"Definitely!" Simon nodded cheerfully. "Well, if you can fit it in there, let him know the future champ said hi!"

With that, he waved her goodbye and returned to his seat. To his dismay, his pound cake was now almost entirely gone, and on his plate was a satisfied but guilty-looking Caterpie. The bug-type pointed one of its feet at Scatterbug, letting out a small chirp as if to say "it was her."

------
One new slice of cake later, some time had passed and Simon sat at his table, idly using his phone while he waited for the announcement that the train tracks were cleared. In front of him, Scatterbug and Caterpie seemed to be engaged in a riveting conversation, their antennas waving wildly.

The sound of a scuffle behind him suddenly caught Simon's attention.

"Get- away- you rascal! No!" he heard Gramma Tina's voice yell, and quickly turned around, in time to see a daring Corvisquire fly off with something in its claw. "Somebody, please help!" Tina called, frantically looking around. "It's taken my letter!"

"I'm on it, Gramma!" With no hesitation, Simon sprung up from his seat, snatched both his Pokemon, and bolted in the direction the bird had gone in.

Noticing that the Pokemon hadn't flown very high up, Simon realized he could stop it before it got out of reach. "Scatterbug, Caterpie! String shot it!" he ordered. The two bugs, now on his shoulders, squeaked in unison before shooting out thick strands of webbing at the bird. Unfortunately for Simon, he was running upwind, and the two strands came quickly back at him, hitting him right in the face. "Ah!" he exclaimed, blinded, and struggled to rip off the string. When he finally did, the Corvisquire had gotten much further away- and he could still see the letter in its claws, fluttering in the wind among other things. Suddenly, a small, shiny item fell out of its clutches, bouncing on the stones below with a clink. He briefly paused his chase to pick up the metal object. "A pendant," he realized. "The shiny thing must've been what it was aiming for - pretty sure Corvisquires don't do literature."

It seemed the bird hadn't noticed that part of its bounty was missing, as it kept flying back towards route 2. Simon swiftly avoided the crowds of village folk and trainers near the route's entrance, keeping his eye on it. After some more time, he saw it circle around briefly, before landing in a small tree off the side of the route. Simon stopped running, glad he could finally catch his breath.

"Alright, now we know where it lives." Simon looked at the Corvisquire's nest. "That's step one to threatening someone, this one Spikemuth girl told me."

"Caterpie?" the small Pokemon on his shoulder asked.

"Nah, we prolly shouldn't, tiny. Last thing I want is to chase this thing again. We're gonna need to stratemagize."

Scatterbug looked at its new bug partner, closing her eyes and shaking her head, as if to say 'this never ends well.'

Simon sat on the floor, crossing his arms and eyeing the roosting Corvisquire. Every bone in his body was urging him to grab his net and charge, but he knew the impulse had to be controlled; there was more at stake than just a Pokemon capture - the possibility that he could never taste Gramma Tina's cinnamon buns again. He thought of possibly attacking from afar- but neither of his Pokemon had moves with enough reach to touch the bird. Scaring it off, perhaps? No, he would just end up exhausted and running in circles. As he pondered the idea of simply throwing his net instead of swinging it, his hand absentmindedly brushed against a chain hanging from his coat - the pendant he'd picked up earlier. After closely examining it, he noticed it had a familiar shape- it was red with black dots, with a head, and six little arm-like shapes extending from the sides, just like a Ledyba.

x0TYh7I.png

"That's it!" he exclaimed, grabbing Scatterbug and Caterpie off his shoulders. "It wasn't after the letter or the shiny, it was after this! It thought Gramma's Ledyba pendant was a meal!"

Both Pokemon opened their mouths in realization- with Caterpie catching on much quicker than Scatterbug. He hurriedly crawled back up Simon's arm, and into his hood, as Scatterbug stood in front of them, confused.

A sly grin grew on Simon's face- one he only had when one of his strategies was in action. "Hey Scatterbug, I'm gonna need a favour."

Sly as a Fox part 1

With the cliche graduation music still ringing in her ears, Melody almost managed to walk by the train station without noticing the sound of a forming riot. Almost. If it wasn't growing louder by the second, that is. The shouts come one after the other and it's difficult to make out what's actually being said, just that it's being said in a very angry way.

"... You think they'll give us a free train pass if we go down there and break it up?" Melody asks as she looks down at her satchel. The black flap lifts ever so slightly to reveal two large, yellow eyes peering up at the new trainer.

"Dreee?"

"I'll take that as a yes. Let's go." Melody declares before swinging the train station doors opened.

"I have a presentation at work in an hour, and my notes are in that briefcase!"

"My wedding ring was in my handbag! You better find who did this right this instant or hand over 20,000 poke!"

A crowd of people had formed around what appeared to be a terrified baggage-claim attendant. It didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on around here: There's a thief among us (also that woman's out to make a quick buck. Who keeps their wedding ring in a handbag?) Now, the question is, did the thief grab what he could and make off with the goods, or is he hanging around, waiting for someone to get desperate enough to offer a reward and then suddenly find the missing luggage stashed in an alley somewhere?

Melody leans against a wall as far away from the roaring crowd as she possibly can, taking in the chaos and observing the crowd. If the thief was going for plan B, he would be hanging around and listening. Hm… no, there doesn't look to be anyone waiting around, only angry passengers and very worried-slash annoyed staff. Of said staff was a janitor sitting in one of the waiting chairs. It looked like he was in the middle of waxing the floor when this mob descended upon the station, and it was clear they had all set up camp exactly where he wanted to be next, as, upon giving the floor another the look, Melody realized the area they were encircling was the only one without a nice little shine to it.

That place, and the very subtle but very present paw print-shaped dull spaces leading to the emergency exit. Quirking an eyebrow, Melody follows the pawprints to the door. If something went through this door, why didn't the alarm go off? The answer becomes plain as day once she gets close enough to the door: A small wire that connects the door to the alarm trigger has been cut. "Looks like our thief isn't working alone."

Melody glances over her shoulder to the screaming crowd. Even if she could get their attention, she doubts she can break them from their mob mentality. With a roll of her eyes, she pushes into the door with her shoulder and makes her way out. "They can't have gone far, not with everything they were carrying." It would be too obvious if a Pokemon went walking through the streets with a mouthful of hand bags and suitcases.

"Dree?" Nightshot peers out from the satchel and points to a toothbrush lying in the middle of the cobblestone path. Not far from the toothbrush is what appears to be a lipstick. The tiny dragon phases out of its trainer's bag and floats past the lipstick to pick up a white washcloth between its nubbed hands. "Dreepy!" It calls and motions down the street. Several more toiletries lead down the cobblestone road to a warehouse with a slightly ajar door.

"Well that was… easy." Melody furrows her brows and pats the fabric of her satchel. "Stay close, Doom Noodle."

The ghostly dragon gives a small nod and quickly back to its trainer, this time choosing to float just above her head, keeping himself steady by placing his arms right behind her ears.

Melody sidles through the door slowly, careful not to let in any access light or cause the door to creak. Once inside, she ducks down and slides behind a large cargo box. After several seconds pass in silence, and it seems clear that they weren't spotted, she peers around the side of the large crate to get a look at their surroundings. As expected, a collection of luggage is piled on the left side of the room. A Thievul sits, slightly crouched, beside the pile with its ears slightly pinned back. Slightly obscured by the darkness of the old warehouse, a man is crouched on the other side of said pile, rummaging through its contents.

"Not bad, but not enough." The man says as he stands up, an action that causes the Thievul's head to duck down.

"Don't give me that look. You know what you need to do so I'll release your precious pups." The man sneers. "The next train is scheduled to come into town in half an hour. You better be ready for round two."

So that's what's going on, Melody thinks to herself. This man is forcing that Thievul to steal for him by holdings its babies hostage… but why hasn't the Thievul ripped the guy to shreds yet? As Melody's eyes adjust to the lack of light within the room, the answer becomes clear: Around Thievul's neck is a black collar with a small box in the center. A shock collar. A shock collar and helpless baby hostages… this guy sure was covering his bases.

Melody slides back completely behind the cargo crate as the shady jerk walks to what she can only assume is an office, tossing a small box up and down in his hand. That has to be the controller for the collar. Someone sure is proud of himself. Once he shuts the door behind him, Thievul lies down on the ground beside the pile of stolen goods. The poor thing must be exhausted.
Silence falls over the warehouse as Melody surveys the area around them. If the nine different varieties of crime scene investigation shows her mother would watch had taught her anything, it's that criminals like to keep their hostages close by. They don't want to risk them escaping and running for help or finding their way back to their parents. The Nikits must be somewhere in this warehouse.

Epoch 1: Wedgehurst Town
The Start of a New Chapter!

"Litten, the Fire Cat Pokemon.
A Fire type.
Litten show few emotions and prefer being alone. It takes time to build any level of trust.
"

A young teen with vermillion hair sat on a bench, looking down at the small green tablet-like device in her hands. Her parka was left open, allowing people to see her halter top. She has placed her ATC in the small slot she found in the back. It activated and since then, she's been trying to work the different apps and gadgets inside. Right now, she was making sure the pokedex function was working; if not, she'd have to ask the professor for another one. For the test run, she has the pokedex scan her partner, Tora the Litten, a mischievous kitten who likes to tease others, but for some reason, hasn't done it on her-- oh wait. He's done it once, but then after, never again...she can still remember how they first meet and the aftermath...

*Flashback*
Ten year old Sachi was walking down the sidewalk to her house, carrying two bags of light groceries. It's been about two years since they moved to Wedgehurst, and so far, she still didn't know half the people.

Suddenly, a black and red feline jumped in her path, causing her to stop in her tracks. The cat was dirty, some fur was different shades of brown from all the dirt clinging and the critter looked a bit skinny. The feline glared at her, glancing at the bags in her grasp, then back at her.

Sachi stared back, unnerved by the Pokémon's glare, but she was curious about the new Pokemon. Why were they here? Did they need something?

The feline hissed, it's fur puffed out and tail lashing, teeth bared, trying to look intimidating.

Sachi blinked, but otherwise, did nothing else. What do I do? What are they doing?

The feline jumped and cut the bottom of one of her grocery bags, jumping back a safe distance.

Sachi heard the apples and berries drop as the bag suddenly grew much lighter. She looked down and saw the fruits and berries scattered, some covered in dirt. She glanced at the feline, who was hissing, as if daring her to approach. However, instead of doing so, she crouched down and took off her black jacket, revealing her white t-shirt. She placed her sweater on the ground, careful of her green pleated skirt, and slowly grabbed the fallen food, placing them on top of the jacket.

The fruit and berries... I have to grab the before the five second rule runs out... I should have some money left if something happens...

The feline slowly stopped hissing, confused.

Sachi blinked, hearing another tear, but from behind her, where she placed the other grocery bag. She turned and saw the milk knocked over, but luckily not spilling. However, now that the bag was ripped, she would have to carry the milk without the help of the bag, which helped with the milk's weight. She turned back and tied her sweater so the fruits and berries wouldn't spill over. She grabbed the tied knot with one hand and turned, using her other to grab the milk's handle and slowly lift it up.
That should do it... now... She stood up, hesitantly and a bit wobbly, the milk was heavy and she had to use all her strength to not drop it then and there.
She glanced at the feline, giving it a small bow. I don't know what happened, but be safe little guy. Sachi took slow steps, slowly walking home with the added weight causing her to strain her muscles.

The feline stared at the child, confused and shocked, as she passed by.

Sachi was about a couple feet away when she heard a loud cry, pausing her step. She turned--

*Flashback Ends*

"Mroooow!"

Sachi glanced at her lap, knocked out of her thoughts, where the fire cat was sitting up, staring at her with annoyance. He meowed again, pawing at her hand that was laying beside. Oh right, I was petting Tora while testing out the pokedex feature...

The girl mumbled an apology, placing her hand on his head and continued petting the feline. The cat purred, closing his eyes and leaning into the warmth.

Sachi looked at the tablet, seeing Tora's information come up: his species, ability, moveset, biology… She carefully read through it all. If she was going to be his trainer, she needed to learn as much about him as possible.

Forgetting her previous thoughts, she was so focused on the tablet, she didn't notice someone sitting down beside her. On the other hand, Tora did, reacting with a small hiss, leaning his body in a protective manner.

Sachi closed the tablet like she would a flip-phone, placing it in her parka's left inside pocket, opposite of where her ATC is(in the parka's right inside pocket). She closed her eyes for a sec, taking a deep breath and exhaling, then opened her eyes and turned to her left. Beside her was a young adult with messy black hair, gray eyes, lean built, and is about a head taller than her. He wore gray glasses, a black jacket with cream-colored fur (around the hood, bottom of the jacket and wrist cuffs), a red with yellow-lined pattern t-shirt underneath, blue jeans, black and yellow sneakers, and a gray hip pouch around his waist.

"How is it like being a graduate?" asked the male, watching the people walk by.

"Freedom," Sachi mumbled, looking down at Tora, who stopped hissing when he felt the familiarity between his human and the male human. But that didn't mean he liked him, hence the glaring and twitching tail.

"I see… that is true. What are you going to do about your dad though?"

Sachi was quiet for a bit turning to the male, "**** him."

The male lurched, choking on his spit. After a few seconds, he regained himself, staring at the girl, shocked. "Where the **** did you learn that?" Sachi stared at the male, confused, before pointing at him. "Well ****."

"What are you teaching her?!" a female voice raged. Suddenly, a hand slapped the male's head, hard. The male yelped, leaning down as he held his head.

Sachi placed a hand on his shoulder, worried, but a pair of arms wrapped around her shoulder. The person whose arms belonged to was standing behind her, she can feel their chin resting on her head.

"Woman! What was that for?!" cried the male, glaring at the person behind Sachi, his warm grey eyes now narrowed in anger.

"That was for teaching Sachi a curse word!" scolded a female voice, the arms around Sachi tightened a bit.

"You've cursed before too! How is that any different!" countered the male, pointing a finger at the figure. The arms around Sachi retreated, the figure behind her moved to stand near the male. The figure was a young adult with chin-length orange-red hair, fringes curved to the side, and bright blue eyes. She stood at a height of five feet and five inches, her mouth was curved into a scowl.

"I may have cursed, but at least I don't do it around innocent youngsters!" rebuked the woman.

"Tori. Seto." The bickering adults stopped, looking towards Sachi as she stared at them. During their small argument, she had stood up, her bag slung over her shoulder and Tora on her left shoulder. "Is it alright if I go?"

"There's no need to ask Sachi! You can go anytime you want!" the red-orange haired woman, Tori, assured.

"Wait! I still want to talk to you more!" pleated the black haired male, Seto. He stood up to walk over to the girl, but Tori kicked behind his knees. The male spluttered, almost tripping over, but managed to hold his balance. He glanced back, glaring at the smirking female, "Y-you! What was that for?!"

"I just wanted to." Tori replied, crossing her arms over her chest, her smirk turned into a grin. "If you are going with Sachi to Route 2, keep her safe."

"No need to tell me." consulted Seto, grinning as he stood beside Sachi placing a hand on her head, "My pokemon are in tip-top shape!"

"Sachi, if anything happens- just throw this idiot at the pokemon. That should serve as a good distraction and give you time to run away." suggested Tori, earning a gasp from Seto and a worried look from the young teen.

"Good distraction?! I'm not a chew toy?!"

"You let your Mightyena use you as a chew toy, why not wild pokemon too?"

"H-hey! He likes to play around and chew stuff! What else am I supposed to allow him to chew?"

"Actual chew toys?"

"They cost too much!"

"Seriously?! A chew toy is like $10-15 pokedollars! Your glasses cost like $30 pokedollars! Buy less expensive ones and you'll have enough money for more chew toys!"

"I like expensive ones, they come with cool patterns and features…"

"They're all glasses! The same, dude!"

"I need these kinds though! My pride depends on it!"

"Boi!"

Sachi watched as Tori and Seto bickered, a small smile formed on her lips. I'm going to miss their arguments and bickering... And Tori and Seto more... She looked at Tora from the corner of her eyes, she saw the feline watching with a blank look, his tail swishing around lazily.

"I'm leaving." Sachi announced, turning around and heading down to Route 2. She wanted to check out the route as soon as possible, it was going to be her first time out of town and she was pretty excited.

"W-what- Hold up!" Seto grabbed his glasses from Tori, who grabbed them during the argument, and speed walked over to Sachi, placing his glasses on.

"Remember Sachi! Seto can be used as a pokemon shield anytime! Don't hesitate to do so!"

Sly as a Fox part 2

But where? They won't be out in the open, and they won't be anywhere super obvious. Melody slowly scans the room twice before finally realizing a door on the other side of the warehouse. It's easy to miss in the darkness, and it's half obscured by stacked crates blocking half of it from view. That's got to be it. Even if Thievul realized that's where they were, it would have a hard time getting that door opened without shoving the crates aside and making a commotion. Melody glances up to lock eyes with the small ghost dragon latched holding her head. "I've got an idea." She whispers.

"Pyy?"

"I bet that door's locked. Can you phase through it and open it from the inside?" She asks as she points to the half-blocked door.

Nightshot looks at the door in question and gives a determined nod.

"Open it slow, in case it creaks." Melody adds, giving an encouraging thumbs up.

With another nod, the Dreepy floats along the floor and phases through the half blockaded door. Melody, not wanting to stand up and bring attention to herself, lest that shady guy come back out, begrudgingly crawls across the floor. Of all the things she envisioned might happen upon becoming an official trainer, tracking down a thief and crawling through a warehouse was pretty low on the list.

The doorknob slides downward and the door opens just a crack. Silence. Another inch. All good. Two inches. Another--

Creeak.

Melody fills the rest of the gap between her and the door by rolling. Fortunately, those boxes that are obscuring the door from view are also obscuring her. Seconds tick by without a sound. No footsteps coming to investigate, no other doors opening. Looks like they're safe-- as long as the door doesn't nark on them again.

Melody pushes at the door with the smallest amount of force capable of making it move at all. Once it's wide enough for her to siddle through, she stands up and slips inside. "That… was way more nerve-wracking than it needed to be." She admits with an exasperated sigh.

"Dree…" The ghostly dragon murmurs with eyes downcast.
Melody gives the Dreepy a gentle pat on the head. "It's not your fault this place is falling apart." She flashes something akin to an encouraging smile. "Come on. We've got Nikits to save."

"Py py!" Nightshot whispers while clasping his little nub-hands together.

It's a small room with not a lot in it. Just a desk, a desk chair, and a small coat closet. The only place the Nikits could possibly be is under the desk chair-- which, upon a very quick glance, the duo is able to determine they are not.

"Damn it…" Melody grumbles. "Might be time for plan B… we could jump the guy when he comes back out."

Nightshot tilts his head in concern. "Py…" His large eyes widen. "Dree-py-py!"

"Huh? What's up?"

Nightshot floats over and taps at his Pokeball that's hooked to Melody's belt. "Dree-pyyyy."

"Pokeball?" She asks-- and then the shady guy's words flash back into her mind. He said he would release the Nikits once the job was done. She took it to mean he would let them out of a cage, but he could easily mean release in the literal, Pokeball related sense. "You're a genius, Doom Noodle."

"Py~" The Dreepy hums happily. If his skin were not so dark, one would be able to see a small blush on his cheeks.

Melody opens the top drawer of the desk chair. Not there, but the force of pulling did cause something to rattle. She pulls open the next drawer and-- voilà! Five Pokeballs. She reaches for one and taps the activation button, causing a burst of white energy to lunge out. The white light hits the floor and takes the form of a very frightened, very young Nikit. The tiny creature barely has time to register that this isn't the human he expected before more bursts of light are called forth. In total: Five Nikits.

"Is that everyone?" Melody asks.

The five Nikits quickly bundle together. Four of them squeeze their eyes shut while the fifth, one with a tiny tear in its ear, gives a discrete little nod.

"Good. Let's go get your mom."

The Nikit with the torn ear taps each of its siblings with its tail, causing them to open their eyes. It quietly squeaks out some calls that cause the others to open their eyes. They then all turn to the human and give simultaneous, determined nods.
Melody jogs to the door and opens it fully-- to come face to face with the shady guy.

"Thought you were bein' reeeeeal sneaky, didn't ya?" The man asks as he taps a crowbar against his palm.

Before he can make any movement, Nightshot flies from behind the desk and smashes into the man's head, the force of the impact sending the weak little dragon flying backwards. Immediately after, the five Nikits follow Nightshot's lead by launching their own quick attacks at the man's stomach. Alone it likely wouldn't have been enough, but together it was enough to send the man falling back. Instinct takes over, causing him to drop the crowbar in an attempt to grab onto something.

Both crowbar and son-of-a-***** have hardly hit the ground before Melody snatches said crowbar. She lifts it over her head and brings it down forcefully onto the man's knee. "Run!"

Five Nickits and one Dreepy charge from the door and into the open space of the warehouse, the five tiny foxes all crying out for their mother.

In a blur, the larger fox has made it across the warehouse. As the man attempts to rise, she lunges onto his chest and pins him down, sharp claws digging into his shoulders. He attempts for his pocket to grab the shock collar's controller-- only to have his hand smashed back down and held in place by the crowbar. "Let's go!" Melody calls out-- delivering one downward swing across the guy's face for good measure. It leaves him stunned long enough for both Melody and the Thievul to dart for the exit.

Once outside, the teen forcefully shoves the door to the warehouse closed and shoves the crowbar through the handle. That should hold their thief long enough for her to get back to the station and tell the angry mob where he is. They can handle it from there. "Is everyone okay?" She asks.

Thievul swishes her tail as she inspects each of her children for injury. Once done, she looks up to Melody and nods her head.

"Py py!" Nightshot calls as he floats up to latch his little nub-arms onto Melody's shoulder.

"Good. You guys get out of here. We can handle that son of a ***** from here." She turns to head back to the station, pausing only when she feels a gentle, fluffy head nudge against her palm. She looks down again to see Thievul-- with something in her mouth: A bit of fabric covering a thin, plastic square. She pushes it against Melody's fingers, causing her to laugh. "Did you rip this out of that guy's jacket or something?"

Thievul nods with a mischievous swish of her tail.

"Oh. Awesome." Melody grins as she opens the plastic square to see what's inside: A silver disk with the number 23 on the top. Melody can't help but laugh. "The thief had the ™ for Thief?"

Thievul tilts her head. Those words mean nothing to her. The human looks pleased, though!

"Thanks. This'll really come in handy." Melody slides the ™ into her satchel.

"Kit-kit!" The Nickit with the the torn ear trots over hoists himself up onto two legs, resting his front paws on the teen's knee.

"Hm? What'cha got, little red?" Melody kneels down and the young Nickit places a small, red berry in her hand. Where… did it get that? Was it hiding it in its tail? "Thanks." She says as she gives the small Pokemon a gentle pet on the head. "You guys take care of yourselves, okay?"

With a simultaneous nod from the Nickits and another soft nudge from Thievul, the family takes off for the town's exit. Melody slides her hands into her jacket pocket and makes her way back to the train station, Dreepy still latched onto her shoulder.

"Do you think, if I tell professor Sonia what happened, she'll give me my rod back? You know, for self defense?"

Epoch 1.1: Wedgehurst Town
Entering Route 2! New Discoveries!

Sachi pushed away a low hanging branch as she walked by, letting go once she had passed.

Thwap!

"****!" Seto grumbled as he rubbed his aching cheek; he had tried to push back the branch like Sachi, but he let go too soon and it slapped his left cheek, leaving a red mark.

They were on the trail an hour earlier, but Seto believed he saw a pokemon and dragged Sachi away, wanting it to be her first catch. However, after pushing past bushes, walking through undergrowth, and passing oak trees, they arrived at a small clearing. They stared at nothing as a small breeze went by, pushing them to the side. After a few seconds, Sachi sighed, turning around and walking back the way they came with Seto following dejectedly. Sadly, after a few minutes and a couple turns, they couldn't find the trail.

"I'm sorry Sachi! Please forgive me!" cried Seto, following the girl around like a lost puppy. He really wanted to help the vermillion teen catch a pokemon, be there for her very first catch. But his excitement led them off-trail and now, they don't know where they are! Sachi's always been bad with directions and she was depending on him! Seto stood up straight and placed a hand on Sachi's shoulder, catching the girl's attention.

Sachi was looking around, hoping to catch a glimpse of the trail, but her misdirection was in full blast. She couldn't believe it… her first time out of town and she was lost… A hand on her shoulder snapped her out of her thoughts, causing her to turn to the owner, leading to Seto. The male was standing beside her with a charming smile, pointing at a random direction.

"Let's go that way! I believe that's where the trail is!" Seto declared, his smile turning into a grin as he got ready to walk, but the girl pointed in the same direction with a confused expression.

"... didn't we come from that direction Seto?" Sachi uttered, causing the male to freeze. He slowly let go of her shoulder and lowered his head, groaning.

"****…" Sachi blinked, but before she could comfort the male, she turned her head away, as if she heard something.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

"Alright, let me think… if we came from there…" Seto snapped his head up, pointing at the opposite direction of his previous choice, "Then this has to be the way!" He knew this had to be it! He knows they never took any turns, only went in a straight line, so the easiest route is going straight back! He turned, but his happy expression morphed into panic; Sachi was nowhere! "****… Tori's going to kill me…"

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Sachi walked over to where she heard the noise. Pushing some bushes away, she found a Yamper barking at an oak tree. She looked at the top of the tree and saw a Purrloin laying down on one of the branches, holding an oran berry.

The Purrloin was smirking down at the puppy pokemon, holding the berry close as their tail swished. Yamper barked as they tried to go up the tree, but they couldn't jump high enough and didn't have claws like Purrloin. Barking was all they could do.

Sachi kneeled down, taking off her case-bag and placing it on the ground in front of her like she would a briefcase. She unzipped the case and lifted the lid, revealing all her belongings. Inside, the layout was very similar to how the inside of a suitcase's layout would be: clothes folded neatly inside the lid's zipper-pocket, a small food container, just the basics [still more stuff, but I don't think you want a list of it all]. Sachi grabbed the container and zipped it open, revealing pink poffins.

The smell attracted the Yamper, who stopped barking and turned towards their direction.

Sachi grabbed one poffin and placed it on the ground in front of her, waiting for the Yamper.

Said pokemon looked between her and the treat, glanced back at the Purrloin with his stolen oran berry, then back at the treat. In a matter of seconds, the poffin was consumed and the Yamper was standing in its place, standing up at Sachi with doe eyes, panting.

The vermillion girl blinked, surprised at how fast the puppy pokemon moved, but kept her observations to herself. For a sec, she thought she saw electricity, but it was too quick for her to catch. She held out another poffin, which was consumed as well just as quickly.

Tora, who was clinging onto Sachi's left shoulder, glared at the Yamper. This mutt better be grateful, his human was being kind enough to share her-- wait… she made poffins for pokemon… his snacks! Tora meowed, pawing the air towards the poffins.

Sachi glanced at Tora, grabbing another poffin, and handing it over to the feline, who took it happily. She turned back to the puppy pokemon, who was eating his third poffin. She grabbed the container, closed and zipped it up, placed it in the case-bag, closed the case-bag, then grabbed the straps, placing them around her shoulders once more. She slowly stood up, earning the attention of the Yamper. The moment Tora finished his poffin, the Yamper barked at her. The girl gave the puppy a wave before turning, leaving the area to find Seto.

Yamper stared at where she stood for a few seconds before barking once again. Nothing happened. He barked louder, but nothing. He huffed before barking, but this time, he ran after the girl, forgetting about the Purrloin and his stolen Oran Berry. Around his tail, sparks of electricity appeared as his tail started to generate electricity.

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

"Sachi!" Seto called as he walked through the dense woodland with Yen the Mightyena beside him. He had called out his pokemon earlier to help him track down the lost girl, but his pokemon wanted his "treat" before doing so.

He hesitantly took out a small container of red poffins and opened it, grabbing one and throwing it at the Bite pokemon. "I never should have given you Booze, now you're addicted to it. Luckily, Sachi showed me how to make poffins so I can make them with booze… makes things easier." Seto sighed, closing the container and placing it back in his bag as Yen happily munched on the treat. "Now will you help Yen?" Said pokemon barked happily. "Perfect!"

- - - - - - - - - - - - -

Sachi stopped at the bridge, turning back to the Route they just left, blinking once. This was the first time she got to a destination without human help. A bark got her attention, turning to her right and looked down, seeing Yamper sitting, staring up at her. Ever since she left the area to look for Seto, the Yamper has been following her, but since he wasn't doing any harm, she let him be.

"Sachi!" a voice cried and she was hugged suddenly, causing her to stumble a bit. "I was so worried! Don't vanish like that!" Sachi turned her head to the left and saw Seto with tears. Was he really that worried? "Who knows what Tori will do if i returned without you?!" Oh… that's why. Sometimes it feels like the only reason Seto hangs out with me and stays my friend is because of Tori… Seto's embrace was uncomfortable for the girl, but she didn't say anything, just let him do what he wanted. On the other hand…

"The ****?!" Seto leaped back, holding his bleeding cheek; it had three scratch marks, luckily, they weren't bleeding. The pressure and strength used wasn't enough to break the skin, but enough to cause pain and discomfort. Behind the male, Yen watched with narrowed eyes, growling lightly.

From her left shoulder, Tora was glaring at the male human, his right paw out and claws glinting. First, he hugged his human and almost caused her to fall! Second, he was crushing him and somehow didn't see the struggle he was putting to breath! Third, she was uncomfortable with the hug! This human deserves it!

"Sorry about Tora." Sachi mumbled, bowing her head a bit, as she placed a bandage on his cheek.

The male flinched when pain bloomed, but grinned otherwise, "it's alright! It's not your fault!" he glared at the feline, who flared back. Tora wrapped his tail around her neck, as if claiming the trainer his territory. Seto pouted, but blinked when he heard growling from behind. He turned and saw Yen growling as he glared at the feline, who turned towards the bite pokemon and glared back.

"Seto." Sachi called, "Time to go home." The girl moved towards the small trail leading back to Route 2. She didn't catch any pokemon, but there was still tomorrow.

"W-what?! But you didn't catch a pokemon!" whined the male, following after the teen like a lost puppy. "Shouldn't we look for one first?" He really wanted Sachi to catch her first pokemon as soon as possible, it was important!

"No. I want to check something." Sachi briefly explained, pushing past a long branch, using her hand to push forward. Once she was past, she let go, forgetting about the male behind her. Seto quickly ducked, the branch going over his head. He stood straight, sweat dropping as the girl was trying to speed walk through the forest.

Yen jumped over a root as his trainer stepped over, but before he could walk more, he heard a bark. He turned and saw a Yamper approaching with sparks of electricity around his hind quarters, growling at the wild pokemon. Yamper stopped, staring at the bite pokemon for a few seconds before barking. He tried to move around him, but Yen stood in his path, refusing him. The yamper whined, wanting to follow Sachi, but the Mightyena wouldn't let him!

"Oh. You…" a soft voice spoke, Yen turned as Yamper lifted his head, his tail wagged when he saw the human from before!

Sachi blinked when the yamper swiftly ran around Yen and jumped at her, causing her to catch the pokemon before any damage was done. The yamper barked happily, staring at her with child-like innocence. His hind quarters sparked electricity, but the sparks were slowly going out.

"Sachi? What's-- You found a pokemon! Perfect!" Seto grinned, placing a hand on her shoulder, but quickly pulled away when the Yamper growled at him, electricity sparkling from the fluff around his neck. "What the-! Another one!"

"Do you…" Sachi trailed off as the Yamper stopped growling, turning to her at the sound of her voice, his mood changing from anger to happiness. "...want to come with me?" At her question, the Yamper barked, wagging his tail, and his fluff stopped sparking. She placed one arm around the Yamper as she grabbed a pokeball from her Parka's pocket. She pushed the white button, causing the pokeball to expand, then moved it to be near the Yamper. "...are you sure?" Yamper barked again, but this time, he moved his head and pushed his nose to the device, causing the capsule to open suddenly. A red aura overtook the Yamper as the device opened, absorbing him inside the capsoul, and the device closed, the white button flashing red as it beeped three times before stopping.

"The hell? That was the fastest catch i've seen!" commented Seto as Sachi pushed the button, opening the capsule and letting the Yamper out. The puppy pokemon barked, looking up at Sachi, as if awaiting orders. The girl took out her tablet and opened the Pokedex app, facing the camera towards Yamper. She didn't pay attention to what it did, but she saw the information appear on the screen.
"Yamper… the Puppy Pokemon!
An electric type!
This Pokémon is very popular as a herding dog in the Galar region. As it runs, it generates electricity from the base of its tail. This gluttonous Pokémon only assists people with their work because it wants treats. As it runs, it crackles with electricity.
"

"Hold up-- Only assists people for treats?" Seto questioned, looking down at the puppy pokemon. "So the reason he followed us was only to 'assist us'?" He kneeled down, poking the pokemon on the forehead, but jumped back when the Yamper growled, his fluff sparking up. "****!"

Sachi ignored Seto as she looked through the app, seeing Yamper's moveset and ability. So it's a male… has the ability Ball Fetch… and his moveset…

"Sachi! Get your puppy!" Seto called as he climbed a nearby tree and layed down on the lowest branch that was sturdy enough to hold his weight. Yamper was below, barking up at him, the fluff still sparking with electricity. He wanted to play with the puppy, but he accidentally poked the puppy too hard on the forehead, causing the puppy to try and bite him. Seto quickly ran over to a tree with the puppy following, resulting in what's happening now.

"He doesn't bite." Sachi called back, looking at Yamper's stats.

"Yes he does!" Seto called back, trying to get out of the tree, but Yamper wouldn't relent.

Sachi stared at the information, recalling the way electricity sparked whenever yamper ran, and he was very swift, almost like a… "Bolt of lightning…" She turned and saw Seto trying to get out of the tree, but every time, Yamper would bark and jump, resulting in the male retreating back to the branch. "Bolt." Yamper stopped, hearing her voice. He turned and ran back towards her at record speed, electricity sparking from his tail. "Your name… Bolt." Yamper, now Bolt, barked happily, running around Sachi before halting infront of her.

"Thank goodness…" Seto climbed down from the tree as Sachi picked up Bolt, Yen walked over and sat beside his trainer, gaming Seto's attention. "Why didn't you help?" Yen raised an eyebrow, opening his mouth and pointing in response. "Really?"

Aeliana looked at the TM disc with mild curiosity. Upon leaving the boutique, Michael had fumbled out of the store to give her a TM as an added gift for her assistance. Again, the pink-haired woman really wasn't sure that she deserved something like this, but the man had been adamant in her taking it along. Tampa once again rode on her trainer's shoulder in a piggyback style, the Totodile watching the scenery pass by with glee as they stepped onto grassy knolls of Route 2.

"Apparently it's supposed to teach the move Attract," Aeliana mused as she moved her focus from the TM in her hand to her Pokémon. A smile graced her lips as she spoke. "It'd be a waste to use it on you though, Tampa. You've just got that natural charm!"

The comment seemed to have a positive effect on the Totodile. Tampa's cheeks suddenly became blessed with a rosy-red blush. Her chest puffed out proudly. The sight of it all was enough for Aeliana to slip into a fit of giggles. It seemed like her Totodile was quite easy to flatter. Whether or not that was a good thing, the young woman wasn't sure. At the very least however, it seemed like Tampa was rich with personality.

"Alright, this looks like a good spot," Aeliana said, coming to a small clearing.

Tampa looked up and took in the sights around herself and her trainer. The duo were standing just short of a pond on the route. There was a bridge not too far behind them that would lead the duo back into town. Up futher ahead, there was a small house in the distance. The Totodile didn't really know who lived there, but in the end she figured it wasn't too important. Rather, she turned her focus back towards her trainer. She watched quietly as the trainer slipped her backpack off of her back, before opening it up and pulling out a pair of earbuds and her smart Pokégear. The young woman glanced up at her Pokémon and smiled.

"I thought since we're still waiting for the train to get moving, I'd get a bit of practice in," Aeliana explained. "I guess you kinda figured it out by now, but... dancing sort of my thing. Helps me relax and helps pass the time? Maybe it'll help us get closer to the train departing." The woman wasn't sure if the Totodile understood. Still, the smile never left her face as she quickly came up with an idea. Reaching into her backpack once more, the trainer pulled out a protein bar. She removed the wrapper from the bar, handing it to her Pokémon with a giggle. "I love these things. They're good for a quick pick me up after a dance session or workout, or just a quick snack. This one is maple glazed flavor, but I know you'll love it! Go ahead, try it!"

Tampa took the bar cautiously. The Totodile sniffed the bar, as if checking to make sure it wasn't some sort of trap or trick. She then slowly brought the bar to her mouth and chomped into it, her eyes lighting up as a pleased gurgle escaped from her mouth.

"I knew you'd love it!" Aeliana exclaimed. She placed her earbuds into the phone before placing them in her ears and turning on some of her favorite music. The faint, bouncing rhythmic taps and screeches of rap echoing out of the buds. "Now, you enjoy your snack and be a good girl! We'll head back into town and check on the train situation in a bit, okay?"

Tampa offered a quick nod before returning her focus to her bar. Gnawed on the treat with glee, occasionally watching the pink-haired trainer moving in rhythm to the music blaring out from her earbuds. The Totodile would occasionally try to mimic some of Aeliana's movements, however the bar in her hands was too tempting to ignore for too long. Deciding to work on her own moves later, Tampa put her focus into devouring what remained of her treat. The only problem for the Totodile was this caused her treat to disappear all too quickly. Soon, the bar was completely gone. In its wake there was naught, but a Totodile feeling satisfied yet wanting more.

Tampa looked about, her eyes coming to rest upon Aeliana's bag. The gator Pokémon recalled her trainer pulling out a bar from there. Maybe there was more inside of it? She figured that it was worth a quick check. Tampa watched quietly, making sure the pink-haired woman was distracted, before quietly slipping off of the rock she was sitting on and making her way over to the bag. The Totodile nervously waddled forward. She stopped every other step to check and see if her trainer had noticed. Thankfully, Aeliana was completely distracted. Smiling with glee, Tampa began to reach towards the bag... her tail wagging back and forth with anticipation. She gently pulled the backpack open and peered inside.

Tampa peered inside of the backpack, her eyes widening at the sights before. There were so many things inside that the Totodile had never seen before in her short life. Just what was all of this stuff that her human was carrying around with her? Some of it seemed a bit superfluous. She figured that she could always find out with Aeliana later, but for now she was a Totodile on a mission. Tampa stepped up on her tiptoes and began to rummage around in the bag. She tossed out a few other things, some extra pairs of clothes, a couple of poké balls, a few CDs... Suddenly, her eyes widened. The sight of the familiar bar wrapping caught her eye! With a gurgle of glee, Tampa pulled the bar out and quickly began to scurry away to the rock she had been sitting on earlier.

Her claw like hands began to fumble with the wrapper covering the treat. It was very tight, that much was certain. She had tried to open it the way Aeliana had earlier, but the wrapper seemed to be hanging onto the bar with all strength it could muster. A small, feral growl of annoyance escaped the Totodile's mouth as she strained to pull the bar free. Her claws dug into the wrapper, eyes closing tight as she tugged and pulled... until suddenly, the wrapper opened up wide. Tampa fell back onto her backside, a gasp of surprise as the bar flung out of the wrapper and flew into the nearby bushes. Panic overtook Tampa's facial features. The Totodile quickly scrambled to her feet and chased after the lost snack. Her snout sniffing with every step, trying to find just where her new favorite snack disappeared to. Glancing around in the bushes, her eyes narrowed as she took in the scenery. That was when she saw it.

Her precious bar of deliciousness... being munched on by someone not her?! Unthinkable!

The Totodile huffed in annoyance as she stormed her way towards the snacking creature. It was a round, blue creature. A vacant expression was worn on his face, which also contained a small, duck-like bill. On the top of his head was a large lily pad. A Lotad was stealing her snack! Unconceivable!

The Lotad looked up as Tampa made her way over towards him. A wave of nervousness rushing through the wild Pokémon's body. Furious gurgling and snapping escaped the Totodile's mouth, her claw-like hand extending forward as she demanded that the wild Lotad return her precious treat. Lotad nervously looked down at the bar in front of him, and then back up at Tampa... before firing a quick Water Gun in the Totodile's face. Tampa gasped in surprise as the cold squirt of water sprayed into her eyes, the gator Pokémon quickly rubbing her eyes in an attempt to dry them. Tampa glared with annoyance at Lotad... only to see the Pokémon was nowhere to be seen. The Totodile looked around with haste, quickly spotting the Lotad running out into the clearing as he took her bar with him!

Tampa wasted no time in chasing after the wild Pokémon. The Lotad carrying what remained of the protein bar between his bill in a furious attempt to keep it away from Tampa. The Totodile slammed into the wild Pokémon with all the strength she could muster. Her claws scratching and scraping at the Lotad in an attempt to get her bar back from the creature in a wild fury. Both Pokémon cried and wailed in response to the other, enough to the point that the commotion got so loud that it finally managed to snap Aeliana out of her dance practice. The pink-haired trainer turned, eyes wideneing in shock at the two Pokémon fighting over the protein bar... as well as the sight of her various belongings scattered about the area.

"Hey, hey, hey!" the girl called out. "What in the heck is going on?!"

As if they were two children being lectured for sneaking cookies before dinner, both Tampa and the Lotad instantly dropped whatever fuss they were in the middle of. Tampa nervously looked down to the ground, an apologetic look covering her face as her tail gently scraped against the dirt. The wild Lotad on the other hand, kept his eyes on Aeliana the entire time. His body trembling with fear at the sight of the much, much taller human.

"Tampa, if you wanted another bar all you had to do was ask," Aeliana sighed, she pointed to her belongings. "Now, pick all of that mess up!"

Tampa nodded in response. Defeated, the Totodile made her way towards Aeliana's belongings. She began to scoop them up into her hands, before dumping them all back into the backpack one item at a time. With her Pokémon now focused on fixing her mess, Aeliana turned her attention to the wild Lotad. She could tell the creature was absolutely petrified in fear, so instead of lecturing the wild Pokémon, she offered him a small and comforting smile.

"Alola, little friend. I see you met Tampa already, huh? Sorry about any trouble she might've caused ya," Aeliana began. She noticed the remains of the bar in front of the wild Lotad and handed it to the Pokémon gently. "Are you still hungry? Go on, finish it."

The Lotad cautiously took the bar and began to nibble on what remained. A pleased look took over his face, the Pokémon clearly enjoying the protein bar as much as Tampa had before him. Perhaps he liked it even more. Aeliana felt her smile grow wider. A sudden idea coming to mind.

"You know... I have a lot more of those bars. I bet they're much more tasty than the bugs or algae or... whatever it is you actually eat is, yeah? In fact, I could give you a lot more... if you decide to go with us," Aeliana suggested. Tampa, who was busy stuffing the girl's poké balls back into her bag stopped on that note. Slowly, she turned and watched her trainer curiously as she continued. "You see, I'm putting together a crew of sorts. A dance crew, to be exact. Of course, we're gonna be doing contests and showing Galar just how to really get down and cut loose... but you seem to be a pretty strong little dude. I mean, you managed to hold of Tampa for a bit and she's one of the strongest Pokémon I know!"

Tampa snorted at this, clearly not pleased at hearing how the Lotad was holding her back in their scuffle.

"Sooooo... what do you say, little guy? Wanna tag along and see how far we can get?" Aeliana asked.

The pink-haired trainer held one of the balls out that Tampa had not yet managed to collect. The wild Lotad stared at the ball in her hand, his feet shuffling nervously in the dirt as if he was mulling over all the pros and cons of whether to join the duo or not. After what felt like an eternity, the Lotad slowly and cautiously lurched forward. His bill tapped the button in the middle of the ball, before suddenly being pulled inside by a bright, red light. The ball shook only once in Aeliana's hand, before coming to a stop. Aeliana rose up with glee and cheered.

"That's the spirit, little dude! Welcome to the team, Fiesta!"

Route 2

"SCATTERBUG!"

"You're doing great! Yell louder to get its attention!" Simon shout-whispered, crouched behind a bush. Across from the Corvisquire's nest, on a tree stump, Scatterbug lay wrapped up in a bundle of leaves, the shiny Ledyba pendant used as a makeshift ribbon to tie it all up. The trap was set, and all they had to do was wait.

"She seems kinda nervous… I don't want her to get too scared. You think she's got this, Caterpie?"

"Ca- Cater!" his Pokemon nodded its head vigorously, a small bead of sweat forming on its head.

"If you say so... You're right, I should believe in her!"

It didn't take long for the Corvisquire to notice the bright, Scatterbug-stuffed offering in front of its tree. It eyed the bait for a while, then quickly stood up and jumped off of its nest, gently gliding to the ground. From the bushes, Simon clutched his net, holding out for the right moment. The bird slowly hopped towards Scatterbug, pausing every few seconds to look around.

"Not yet…" Simon muttered.

It made its way to the stump, and hopped on top. Scatterbug let out a terrified squeal.

"Not… Yet…"

The Corvisquire eyed the trembling bug-type. After taking a moment to think, it leaned down to pick it up with its beak.

"NOW! HI-YAAAAH!!" Simon screamed, leaping out of the bushes. With a masterful overhead swing, he quickly brought down his net on top of the Corvisquire. "You're done for, post thief!" The startled bird thrashed about in the net, the Scatterbug beside it wriggling to get out of the way. "Caterpie, go for his nest! I'll hold him d-"

He was interrupted as the bird suddenly yanked his net forward and flung Simon to the side. "Squiiire!" the enraged flying-type screeched, swatting the net off of its head, and looking around. As its eyes laid on Simon, it let out another screech and flapped its wings menacingly. Simon pushed himself up, regaining his footing right before getting blasted by a powerful gust of wind- nearly knocking him off balance. Caterpie gripped his sleeve, barely holding on. The Corvisquire cawed at them again and looked down at Scatterbug, who had managed to wriggle out of her package and was slowly backing away. Ignoring the leaves and pendant, the bird picked her up in its beak and flew up, retreating back to its nest. In its mouth, Scatterbug squealed, tears welling in her eyes.

Simon got to his feet and ran after them. "Don't worry, girl, this is all part of the, uh, plan!" he called out. This was not part of the plan.

He watched the bird take Scatterbug back to its nest and put her down beside the letter. It was too too high for him to swing his net at, and so were any branches he could potentially climb on. Desperately, he began looking around for rocks to throw at the nest - it could possibly ruin the letter, but what mattered more was his Scatterbug not becoming a meal.

"Caterpie!" he suddenly heard in his ear. The little Pokemon whispered a few cries to him, and his eyes lit up.

"You're a genius, tiny!" Simon whispered back.

The Corvisquire looked down at the items in its nest, pleased with its loot for the day, most of it stolen from the village. With one Talon, it held down the squirming Scatterbug, eyeing it with a devilishly hungry look. It lowered its beak, ready to peck at her, when suddenly a large rock went flying past its head. The bird reeled back in confusion, and looked down, only to find the bothersome trainer from earlier who had tried to ambush them. It cawed a few times at him again, glaring with piercing red eyes. Simon responded with a bird of his own. After it was done screeching at him, the distracted Corvisquire returned to look at his meal.

"Scatterbug, NOW! Stun spore!" Simon commanded.

Before it could react, the bird was blasted with a cloud of black dust from Scatterbug's collar. Stunned, it reeled backwards and released its grip. In a flash, Caterpie appeared from under the nest, and shot at the Corvisquire's ankles with a string shot.

"Quick, jump down!" Simon yelled from below, holding his net. The dazed Scatterbug and Caterpie leaned over the edge, jumping down just in time to avoid a blind swipe by the dazed Corvisquire. Timing his swing perfectly, Simon swiftly caught the two. He quickly looked up at the screeching bird above them. "Alright lads, we're not sticking around for this!" he said, and began running back to town.

Once they had gotten sufficiently far away, Simon sat down to catch his breath, and let out his two Pokemon. Scatterbug was trembling slightly, still shaken by the ordeal. It looked at him with teary eyes, and began hurling what he believed were the pokemon equivalent of insults at him.

"Sca! Scatterbug! Scat-scatterBUG! Scatter! BUG!" it protested.

"I- I'm- But-" Simon struggled to get a word in. Realizing that nothing he could say could console her, he grabbed the Pokemon and hugged her tightly. "I'm sorry, girl. I shoulda never put you in danger like that." He pet her head. "I shouldn't have let myself get blinded like that."

"S-scatterbug?" the Pokemon sniffled in his arms.

"I promise." Simon smiled, putting her on his hat. He turned to his other Pokemon, who was still halfway inside the net. "Hey Caterpie, how are you feeling? I know we didn't manage to get the letter, but it's alright. Sometimes we don't always succeed at what we want, and what matter is you're both safe and-"

"Caterpie!" The worm Pokemon turned around, revealing a slightly crumpled envelope behind him. He looked at Simon proudly.

Bag_Reply_Mail_Sprite.png

Simon's eyes lit up and a wide grin grew on his face. "ALRIGHT!" he pumped his fist in the air, giving Caterpie a tiny high five with his finger. He picked up the envelope and looked at it; it thankfully wasn't torn. He jumped back to his feet and placed Caterpie on his shoulder. "Let's go get this back to Gramma, quickly!"

------

"Goodness, Simon, you really didn't have to go through all this trouble for just a little letter!"

Back at Gramma Tina's house, the old woman had offered Simon's two Pokemon a well-deserved bath and rest, as well as some lunch. Her little cottage was nothing like the dormitories Simon had stayed in- and far tidier, cozier and warmer than his place back home. He sat at her dining table, enjoying a homemade Shuca coconut curry, his favourite from her autumn offerings. He reminded himself that this would be the last one he'd have for a long time, and tried his best to savour it as long as he could.

He smiled and shook his head at Tina's comment. "Naw, it was nothing! Just doing my part as a new Pokemon trainer, gramma."

"What a gentleman." She chuckled, and examined the envelope. "My letter seems to have gone on quite the adventure already. Just like you and my Tim! Seems fitting, don't you think?"

Simon laughed. "Hah, hope it's not gonna be competing with me for the championship."

After some time, Simon and his two Pokemon were ready to head out. As he waited for Gramma to return from the kitchen, he checked his pockets to ensure everything was on him, and took a quick look in the mirror to adjust his hat. He briefly noticed the odour of a familiar pastry coming from gramma's kitchen… After a moment, the old woman walked out of it, carrying a stack of a dozen boxes. Simon looked at the massive stack in disbelief, amazed that TIna could carry all of it in one hand.

She handed him the letter with her free hand. "Here you go. I was going to send it through the post office, but I feel it would be safer, and cheaper-" she winked, "-to have it entrusted to you. Tim's address is right on the front."

Simon nodded, still in awe at the sweet-smelling boxes.

Tina put them in his arms, breathing out as she let go of the weight. "And this-! Is your reward from me! I know you love my cinnamon buns, so I went ahead and made you a few for the journey ahead. Save some for my Timmy if you've got any left!"

Simon looked at the huge stack of pastries, unsure if he wanted to laugh or cry.

Epoch 1.2: Wedgehurst Town

A Smart Flip-Phone?

"*****! I knew something was gonna happen!" Tori snarled as she wrapped an arm around Seto's neck, her other hand pressing her knuckles into the male's head.

"Ow! Ow! OW! I'm sorry! Sachi's misdirection rubbed off on me!" whined Seto, using his arms to try and pry the woman's arm off, but it was futile.

"Rubbed off on you?! You're the one who rubbed off on her! If her Litten hadn't scratched you, I would have done it myself!" Tora raged.

She was protective when it came to the younger girl, it's been an instinct she gained ever since she first met the teen years ago. When she learned about her past and family situation, she took it upon herself to become the 'tough older sister' with Seto as the 'nerdy older brother'. She trained in martial arts up to a black belt and decided to train Sachi in martial arts with herself as the teacher, using the same teachings that were used on herself, but taugher her mainly for self-defense. Her work was well rewarded when she saw Sachi give a man a 'Shaolin Front-Ball Kick', who tried to touch the teen inappropriately. Tori still beat the man up afterwards, but was proud that the teen now knew a man's greatest weakness.

"Just don't ruin my glasses woman!" pleaded Seto.

He was what people would call a nerd, he preferred tinkering with technology rather than going outside. He never did try to train his strength unlike Tori, so he's at a disadvantage when this occurs. Like Tori, he gained a protective instinct towards the teen, but at a later time than Tori. He would often mess with some of his creators and make something to give to the teen for protection, but Tori would break it every time, "They're not strong enough," was her response. Luckily, he trained in martial arts alongside Tori, but was never able to beat the girl for some reason. He never figured it out, but gave up trying and just stayed tinkering with stuff for now.

Sachi walked over to the two and placed a hand on Tori's shoulder giving the woman a look. Tori looked at Sachi for a few seconds before sighing, releasing Seto from her clutch.

"You're lucky Sachi is here…" Tori glared, watching Seto crumble to the ground, taking deep breaths. She rolled her eyes, "I didn't choke you that hard, idiot."

"I thought I was going to die!" Countered Seto, slowly standing. He placed a hand on Sachi's right shoulder to help him balance, but the teen stumbled a bit from the sudden weight. "You need to remember your strength, woman!"

"Bolt." Sachi called before Tori could retaliate. Said Pokemon appeared at her side instantly, his usual electricity sparkling around him. She picked him up, showing Tori her new catch. "His name… is Bolt."

"A Yamper?" Tori questioned, looking closely at the puppy. She placed her hand on his head, petting the critter. Bolt accepted for a few seconds before shaking his head, removing the woman's hand. Then he barked and cuddled into Sachi's warmth, earning a smirk from the woman. "I see... He seems really attached to you, girl."

"He's also protective... Like Tora," added Seto, quickly moving his hand before the feline could scratch him. "Seriously?"

"The cat hates you man," Tori smirked, crossing her arms. She blinked, remembering something. "Wasn't there something you wanted to give to Sachi?"

Seto was trying to place his hand on Sachi's shoulder, but every time, Tora would try to scratch him. He stopped and turned to Tori, face lighting up at the sentence. "Yes, I almost forgot! Thanks for reminding me!"

The male opened his pouch, grabbing two small-sized objects: they were rectangular, about the size of their palm, and came in different colors. One was blue and black while the other was green and silver, both having different colored lanyards attached: one has a pokeball pattern with a black background while the other has a black stars pattern with a green background.

"It's my latest creation! I borrowed some flip phones and used them to create these babies! They are now smart flip phones!" Seto showed the females the familiar flip phones, but they also looked different from before.

"So... basically upgraded flip phones? Cool but I believe they were made from scratch... What a let down..." Tori sighed and shook her head, causing Seto's eyebrow to twitch but he held in the annoyance.

"I'm not that far in the inventing world! I can create… but I need a base first." Explain Seto, handling Sachi one of the phones. The teen moved a bit away from the two, sensing another argument coming...

"That's lame!"

"I guess that means you don't want yours then..."

"I-I mean it's amazing! a new phone… cool!"

Sachi held the device with one hand, observing the device. She saw a camera lens, but waited until Seto explained to figure out what it could do. She turned to ask the male to explain, but stopped seeing as he and Tori were still bickering.

"Just give it!" Tory whined, reaching for the phone

"Why should I? I thought it was 'lame'?" Inquired Seto, using his height to his advantage, standing at 6 ft, he held up the phone from her reach, smirking down at the female.

"It's not lame! Not lame!" Cried Tori, panicking when she saw Seto loosened his grip on the phone. She was getting a free phone, but she had to open her mouth! Karma was close to bitting her back...

"Are you sure?" Ask Seto, "If I drop this… I would not be able to fix it..."

"Yes it is cool and awesome it is the opposite of lame!"

"Good!" Seto let go of the phone, barely giving Tori time to catch the phone, but luckily... she managed to.

"Work?" Sachi inquired, once she noticed they stopped bickering. She had the lanyard over her head and around her shoulders, motioning towards the phone in her hand. With her other arm she was holding Bolt and Tora was on her left shoulder, tail wrapped around her neck possessively.

"All right! Let me explain how it works!" Seto then started to explain how the smart flip phone worked.

30 minutes later…

Tori was once again holding settle in the chokehold, but she was snarling at the male, her hold on his stronger than before.

"You did what?!" Tory hissed, "You could have gotten Sachi in trouble, idiot!"

"I'm sorry! I wanted to test something so I needed her Pokedex to try it!" Seto explained trying to appease the woman. It had the opposite effect though, he felt the arm tightening around his neck, almost cutting off his air supply.

"Test?! Ask for permission first, fool!" Scolded Tori, "And why does not mine have the feature as well?!"

"That's what got you?!" gasped Seto in disbelief, forgetting about the chokehold for a sec. "Seriously, woman?!"

Sachi opened her phone, looking at the information displayed on-screen, transferred over from the Pokedex. It was the same information the tablet displayed about Tora and Bolt after scanning them. She placed the contact information of her friends, Tori and Seto, and some of those from the academy as well. She opened the camera app, tilted the phone sideways- putting it in a position similar to a camera -and started to record the two adults shenanigans.

"I will kill you if they blame you for the hacking of the Pokedex!" Warned Tori as she sat on Seto's back, grabbing his legs and pulling them back towards her. "Did you forget they might have a security detail on that thing?!"

"Ow ow ow ow! They are not supposed to be like that woman!" Cried Seto, slapping one hand on the ground and the other trying to reach for Tori but failing. "And I know about the security, but I still wanted to try it!

"You knew and went with it?! Clutch Time!"

"Stop it! My legs!"

"It's punishment for what you did! Repent!"

"I said I'm sorry! Sachi help-- don't record this!"

"Sachi's not helping this time!" Tori laughed, then looked at Sachi, who was still recording. "Send me a copy of the video! I want to keep it to remind this idiot to never do it again." Sachi gave her a thumbs up, earning a groan from the male.

Isla Wright - Playing Around Route 2

Isla spent the morning alone at her usual spot. The large oak tree near Route 2 had become like a second home to her, one she shared with her friend Winston. Usually shared, at least. It was a shame, that, considering how beautiful of a day it was.

Said friend had gone back to his home in Postwick immediately after graduating, to "settle something" apparently. He'd been acting strange lately. She couldn't quite describe it though besides him feeling off. He made it clear though that he might take a while, and that he didn't want her waiting for him. "You could use the head start if you wanna keep pace with me," he'd said. And he was right.

During school Winston was always there to help her, but now she had to figure things out herself. It wasn't like she was completely lost. She knew the general ways a trainer was supposed to get stronger. She'd managed to retain at least that much from school, and the nearby Route 2 was the perfect place to get started. But…

Isla currently found herself just playing around with her starter, the little pink mime pokemon she'd named Woop because it was the first word that came to mind after seeing it hop and twirl when they met. While she mused at the tree about serious pokemon trainer things, Woop was imitating passerbys. Isla thought it looked fun so she abandoned her thoughts and joined him.

More specifically, she found herself copying Woop, fascinated by the ways he tried to compensate for differences in height or props he didn't have. She was also mildly amused by the idea that she was imitating an imitation. Woop leaned forward as it copied a girl who was being dragged along by her Snubbull on a leash, and Isla did the same.

This, of course, earned confused and even judgemental looks from the subjects of their mimicry. Isla was too busy having fun to care, and Woop was too busy trying to copy said looks with its own face. Mime Jr. was never a pokemon Isla thought about much before. Not something that would have made her list of favorite pokemon for sure. But here and now she was glad she'd gotten one as a starter.

Every now and then Woop would move to a different part of Route 2 in search of new subjects to mimic. Isla didn't stop him, curious to see where he would go. For the most part she'd left her starter to its own devices since becoming partners, and the Mime Jr. made the most of its autonomy.

She continued observing her pokemon until it stepped into some tall grass and out of her sight, on account of being so short. It quickly ran back out of said grass, hopping in front of Isla to grab her attention. "Mime, mime!" It seemed like Woop had enough of being independent for the day.

A diminutive growl came from the grass as a large-headed blue pokemon followed after Woop. It was a Chewtle, with its trademark expression of eternal irritation. It glared at Woop, unibrow furrowed. Woop looked at the Chewtle, then curiously looked back at Isla.

This was a prime moment for a beginner trainer to shine, her first battle with a wild pokemon. Or it would be if Isla was concerned with battling the Chewtle. She was more concerned with how cute she thought the Chewtle looked, with its balloon-like head ending in a point and its furrowed unibrow. Amazing.

Without thinking, Isla knelt down to pet the Chewtle. The Chewtle responded by clamping down on her hand with its teeth. She winced, pulling her hand back and bring the Chewtle with it. It seemed the turtle pokemon had no intention of letting go. "Oh my…" she muttered.

Her hand hurt, not helped by the Chewtle tightening its grip. She turned to her starter. "Woop, do you think you can do something about this?" She lifted her hand to show Woop, lifting the Chewtle off the ground with it.

Woop tilted its head in confusion.

"I see…" She supposed as a trainer, she should figure out a proper order to give her pokemon. She wouldn't be surprised if Woop had never even seen a pokemon battle, much less been in one. But she wasn't really sure what order to give.

Isla pulled her pokedex out of her pocket and pointed it at Woop. Maybe something would come to her if she could remember what moves he had. And sure enough, there was one that stood out to her. "Here we go. Can you use Hypnosis, Woop?" The Mime Jr.'s eyes lit up, having a command it could actually follow.

It gazed at the Chewtle, its eyes lit with a mix of blues and purples. But the Chewtle didn't fall asleep. At this point, Isla had lost most of the feeling in her hand. She made a soft frown, realizing her hand might be at risk. She liked that hand and would prefer not to lose it.

She searched her mind for a reason the move might have failed. "Hmm… Do you think you can try it again, Woop?" she asked. Woop nodded, and let its eyes glow once more. This time Isla awkwardly tried to tilt the Chewtle so its eyes met with Woop's. "A little to the left, please," she asked her starter so she wouldn't have to twist her Chewtle-bearing arm quite so much. The two pokemon locked eyes, and before long the Chewtle's grip began to loosen. It fell off Isla's hand and dropped to the ground in a deep slumber.

Isla looked at the damage, flexing her fingers to try and regain feeling in them. Blood dripped down her hand, her wrist pulsing with pain. She pulled one of her blank shirts she'd intended to decorate later and instead used it to bandage the wound. She could tell it would be a pretty bad bruise, but she'd worry about that later.

Right now she had to deal with the culprit responsible, sleeping peacefully at her feet. "What do you think?" she asked her starter, crouching down next to their foe. Woop gestured toward Isla's hand.

"Mime, mime!"

"Yeah, it got me good. I'm okay though. It's pretty strong, might make a good teammate?"

Woop pondered that for a moment. "Mime."

"Let's try it, then."

Isla fetched a pokeball from her bag and tapped it against the sleeping pokemon. Its body was enveloped in white light, then dragged inside the ball. It shook in Isla's hand. Once. Twice. Three times. It stopped, sealing with a satisfying click. She smiled, her face returning to its usual expression.

Of Squawks and Skulls

"Congratulations on your first catch!" Nurse Joy smiled beatifically as she held out the tray over the counter. The young man on the other side took the pair of pokéballs from it and reattached them to his belt with a big sigh.

"Right, thanks. Keep up the good work." His voice was so utterly devoid of enthusiasm that she tilted her head in mild curiosity, but didn't lose any of the warmth in her expression as he wheeled around on his heels and made for the door.

Once the doors closed behind him, Jasper hustled off to the side, getting just far enough around the corner that he wouldn't be making a scene. He pulled a pokéball off his belt, one that had no sticker yet and squinted at it. After a few seconds of gawking, he let out another big breath and gave the ball a lazy underhand toss. A beam of white and blue blazed out of the ball as it flew back into his hand and coalesced into a Munchlax, letting out a big yawn. Only after finishing its second favorite ritual did the Munchlax actually notice Jasper, whereupon it simply raised an arm by way of greeting and let out a happy "Laaax!"

"Alright, this is your one chance to go back to your life." The trainer said bluntly to the pokémon with a deep scowl. "I hope you learned not to fuck with people's lives and pay a bit more attention to your surroundings, if you don't you're, just gonna keep getting your ass kicked. Bottom line, you've already proven to be trouble. I don't need trouble, or for anyone on my team to be anything less than a hundred percent committed, so if that ain't for you, get a move on." The Munchlax looked at the now-empty pokéball it had come from, then the trainer's face, then watched his hand as he pulled out his pokédex, processing what he'd said. It continued to look between the three points of interest for an entire minute before it turned around and began to lumber off back towards the wilderness.

Jasper's face twinged at the time the little blue bear had wasted making him wonder and he let out a final sigh, holding the pokéball up to the pokédex's scanner.

Alright. Second attempt to set her foot outside this town is a-go. She'll cut across this alley and take a short cut. Melody had successfully transferred the angry mob's reign of terror from the innocent train-station employees to the shady guy trapped in the warehouse… with no free train tickets to show for it. Oh, well. Easy come, easy go. At least they got a ™ and a berry out of it. Now they're back on the right track, a track… blocked by an all too familiar face.

Melody's shoulders slump at the sight of Jasper; a classmate that she had spent considerable time at the academy sneering and snarling at. Sonia quickly learned that pairing them together was like tossing a lit match into a puddle of gasoline. She figured he would be one of the first students out of the little town, but no, he's still here. Giving a poor Munchlax grief, from the looks of it.

She leans against the nearest wall and watches the two interact. Huh. He caught that Munchlax-- and now he's letting it go? Well, more like he's telling it that its life is going to be miserable if it doesn't leave. That's… the nicest thing she's ever seen him do. That's right, roll on, little Munchlax. Go live your life.

She waits for the Munchlax to get a decent distance away before she lets her presence be known. "Munchlax is pretty rare around here. Why'd you let it go?" What? He doesn't know she's been here the entire time. He doesn't know she heard the whole spiel. She's also… not sure she believes him completely.

That was not the voice Jasper wanted to hear - not that he wanted to hear any at all - behind him. Ah, shit. He stopped watching the Munchlax waddle away to turn his attention to Melody, probably the classmate he'd clashed with the most. Probably quite literally if Sonia hadn't paid enough attention to them. "What's it to you? I don't need something around that just wants to sleep and eat all my food. I caught it for the challenge."

That answers her question about Sonia giving her rod back. Their Professor's probably not going to be arming Melody as long as there's a chance she might cross paths with Jasper again. They nearly came to blows far too many times even after the confiscation. At his response, Melody rolls her eyes so drastically it could probably be seen from space. "If all it does is eat and sleep, what's the challenge?"

"There was a whole stampede of'em angry about being woken up coming at me, and I was between them and food." Jasper grunted. "And it updates my pokédex." Jasper allowed his annoyance to take background duty for a moment so his pale blue eyes could bore into her bold red ones. "And to what do I owe the 'pleasure'? There some reason you're interrogating me?" It just had to be her he ran into. Anybody else was easy enough to just curse at dismissively and walk away, but Melody always found a way to draw him in.

Oh, she would have paid good money to see an army of Munchlax charge at Jasper. That brings a little smirk to her face. She folds her arms over her chest as he goes about his sneering. "I thought I was taking a shortcut out of town. I didn't think I'd see anyone lurking around." And she has a feeling he'll hang around and block her path just to spite her. Fine. She'll go the long way. She turns on her heels. "You know, you already went through the trouble to catch it. You could have at least kept it around to trade for something."

There it is. She just wouldn't let it go until she got an answer she liked, would she? "I don't wanna trade anything with anybody. I'm gonna get strong by getting strong. Nothin' wrong with a little help now and then but I still need my strength to be mine. That enough for you? What do you want?" He growled the last part. "I don't have anything to justify to you. You want the Munchlax? Take it, maybe then you can stop hiding your little Doom Noodle from everything all the time."

It's very likely that Jasper can see her entire body bristle. Here she was about to leave him be and he had to start. She quickly surveys the ground around her for something to throw; a stone or an old can or something. Nothing. Damn streets being kept so clean. She whirls around to face him again, too focused to notice the gentle clink of a small, silver skull hitting the ground below. "Like hell I'm taking one of your handouts." She waves her hand dismissively, her middle finger raised slightly above the others before turning around and making her way back to the street.

He snorted as he watched her walk away. "Heh, suit yourself." He began to turn the other way - despite Melody going in the direction he'd planned to go - when he caught himself looking off in the direction the Munchlax had gone. He snorted again and prepared to leave when the swivel of his head caught a glint of light on the ground. Jasper knelt down and grabbed it, eyes widening when he pinched it between two fingers and looked closer. The little skull from that necklace? Mother of f- "Hey! You dropped something!" He shouted after the girl, holding the skull up enough to catch the light so she could see it clearly. "Keep better track of your shi - "

Swoosh A black blur shot past and just like that the skull was gone, tearing Jasper's gaze to a retreating Rookidee, flying off with the skull clenched in its toes. "Motherfucker! Get back here you jackdaw-jackass!" He blurted out, chasing after the little bird without a second thought.

Melody looks over her shoulder to see the little glittering object. Instantly her hand flies to her neck and feels the distinct lack of a chain. Damn it, should have put that thing on a thicker chain. Before she can turn around to jog back for it-- swoosh.

Did… did a freaking bird just jack her necklace? "You son of a bitch!" She shouts. "Get back here!" She darts after the fleeing bird as Nightshot phases out of her bag and attempts to float up enough to snatch the necklace from the Rookidee. Unfortunately, he's not nearly fast enough.

They were lucky none of the woodland in the area was too close to Wedgehurst proper. If that Rookidee made it to the woods it would be nearly impossible to catch. Less luckily...the woods were exactly where it was heading. There was no way a pair of teenagers could catch up to it before it found safe haven, and neit
her Larvitar or Dreepy are especially fast pokémon. I could try to catch it, but what about the necklace? What does a pokéball do to something like that? Hold on! Faust can still help! Trying very hard not to lose his balance and eat dirt, Jasper slid to a stop in his pitching position, Faust's ball in hand.

"Bean that bird!" As the words left his mouth, the trainer rocketed the stickered pokéball up into the air and right into the Rookidee's back. The troublesome bird in question let out a pained shriek and dropped Melody's necklace to the ground, but quickly wheeled about to make a dive for it. Unfortunately for Rookidee, the pokéball had hit it directly on the button, and before it could reacquire its prize, Faust landed right next to the necklace, stepping over it and crossing his arms.

As the necklace falls, Nightshot makes a dash for it; however, due to how much heavier Larvitar is, he hit the ground beside the necklace far before Nightshot could get close to it. The little ghost-jet alters his trajectory so that he phases into the ground a good five feet away from Larvitar and the charging Rookidee. He then rises from the ground and floats back to Melody with an apologetic look.

"Don't-- worry. They don't want the necklace, just the bird." Melody says, pausing mid-sentence when she takes note of the bloodthirsty look in her fellow trainer's eyes. Well now… this might be interesting to watch.

When the Rookidee let out a cry of challenge and began to circle above Faust, Jasper got an almost bloodthirsty looking smirk on his face at the sight and stepped forward eagerly."Think you can just snag anything you want, huh? Think you're fast enough to snatch something out of my hands? No sale, You little shitthief!"

Jasper stepped forward and picked up the necklace, clenching it tightly in a fist so it couldn't be a target during the battle. "Rock Throw!" He wasted no time ordering Faust, who began to fling stones of increasing size at the Rookidee. The bird pokémon nimble dodged each rock before flying in to Peck at the Larvitar who'd gotten in the way of its treasure. Even as Faust was pushed back, Jasper didn't seem concerned. "Oh I've been waiting for a good one-on-one. It's unfortunate for you that I don't have to worry about friendly fire." All at once the wind took on a harsh tone, bits of sediment began rapidly flaking off of Faust and being pulled from every bit of loose dirt, gravel and sediment to start a Sandstorm. "Faust's no ordinary Larvitar!"

The Rookidee didn't care for or about any of the guy's bragging about his pokémon, but it sure cared about being buffeted by merciless streams of sand and grit. It became harder and harder to avoid the rocks Faust was throwing and even when it did avoid getting hit the sand alone was hurting it bit by bit. Faust himself didn't even seem fazed from the earlier Pecks thanks to his extreme durability. That was when a series of squawks, chirps, and calls came from the woodland a short distance away. "Ah, shit, you've gotta be kidding me!"

"I think it's got friends!" Melody calls as she ushers Nightshot into her bag. There's no reason for him to get buffed by the sandstorm. She turns to the direction of the angry caws and squawks and charges for the woods. What's she going to do? She hasn't gotten that far yet. Bat them away with a stick, maybe? "Finish it! I'll keep them away!"

"Wait wait wait!" Jasper shouted after her, totally flabbergasted. "Why should the person without the type advantage pokémon run at the birds? I've got this!" His words mattered little though, an entire flock of other Rookidee had already arrived, and were beginning to circle the trainers, threatening to dive bomb them like a squadron of attack planes. The birds were hard-pressed to attack efficiently through the sandstorm, but the first Rookidee was undaunted. It had been Honing its claws ever since it heard its friends approaching and now it slammed a Power Trip into Faust that scored gouges out of his stony hide. "Faust?! No no…Alright, shitbirds… Faust, use Ancient Power! Just like we practiced!"

To answer his question: It's because it's only right to let him finish his fight without interference. Unfortunately, she didn't have as much time as she thought, and the flock descended upon them before she could meet them in the wooded area. "Hey!" She shouts. "Back off, you little shits! Let them have a fair fight!" Is she really trying to reason with angry Pokemon? No, she just wants their attention… and it works. Several of the birds break off and begin to dive bomb the punk teen, sharp beaks pecking into her fist as she raises her arm to protect her face-- and eyes. She's seen that movie.

Faust nodded at his trainer's words, and all of the loose rocks it had been throwing earlier began to move as if under psychic control, they rose up into the air and began to swirl around in the sandstorm. Several of the rocks moved all at once, knocking several smaller Rookidee out of the air. Each time one got struck, an aura of shifting colors grew thicker and thicker around the Larvitar's body. Most of the Rookidee began to back off, and the next time their leader attacked, even with Power Trip, Faust didn't move. Both trainer and pokémon smirked in sync as the sandstorm fell away to reveal a field of floating stones surrounding the Rookidee. "Queen to B4." Jasper snapped his fingers and the rocks converged. Rookidee tried its best to avoid them, but several of them scraped against it until it was off balance and one finally knocked it out of the air, pinning it to the earth. "Down goes the Rook."

Jasper approached the fallen pokémon. " Checkmate. Not really a fair fight, I know. But it's a fight you chose, so take your lumps." Nearly all trace of hostility was gone as he tapped a pokéball to the Rookidee's head. Saving it from its painful position to go into the ball instead.

A determined, angry Nightshot quickly flies out of Melody's satchel, his ghostly tail glowing as he does a spin in the air, slamming it into one of the Rookidee's and sending it flying back.

The birds are about to turn their assault onto the little dragon when they see their allies hitting the ground. With a sharp caw from one of the birds, they join the charge on the Larvitar and its trainer. Melody freezes, mid step, when she hears Jasper speak.

"... Really? A chess joke? Right now?" She's not sure if she's impressed by his enthusiasm or embarrassed for him. Horrible pun aside, he did it, and he's got a pretty determined new ally to show for it. She folds her arms over her chest and flashes him a very discrete smirk. "But… that was a pretty impressive show."

Jasper knelt down to give a Faust a rather vicious looking noogie, he had to rub as hard as possible for the Larvitar to really feel it on his rock of a head. "Good job, all that practice paid off again, Sonia was right… as usual." He grumbled the last part with obvious annoyance before standing straight again and strolling towards Melody. "I just got lucky, Sonia said Larvitar was the perfect partner for me, and here Faust is. That and Ancient Power made him way stronger with use so he could put on a good show. I don't think he could have used it any more than he did though, it's really tiring." It occurred to him that he should deal with matters at hand before singing his pokémon's praises, so he held out his arm and unclasped his right hand, dangling the necklace in front of the girl by its broken chain.

"This is yours, right?" He asked just before a loud Click! Sounded behind him.

"Yeah, it's mine." Melody nods. She decides to give him the chance to hand it over before she snatches it from him. It's okay to have a couple minutes of truce since they faced off an avian army together, right? Not that she believes for a second that he chased that bird down for her, but he did take the time to make sure the Rookidee dropped it before catching it. So… he's not the most selfish person in the world. She holds her hand out as the soft click! chimes behind them, causing her to peer around him. "Looks like you've got another hard hitter there."

Jasper lowered the skull into the palm of her hand and let go of the chain before something tapped his leg and he looked down to see Faust holding the now full pokéball. He took it, squinted at it, then looked back at Melody. "You good?"

"Yeah, I'm good." She clasps her fingers around the charm. She just has to find a new chain for the skull. For now, she slips the necklace into her back pocket. "Don't hang around here too long, or you'll miss the train." Which she's starting to think is cursed. She headed to it once, it was delayed because of a thief (and some Munchlax apparently,) she took a walk to kill time before heading back and got her necklace jacked by a very bitchy-bird. Maybe the third time she heads for the station, she can actually get to it. "And…" She pauses, shoving her hands into her jacket pockets. "Thanks. For getting that back. I owe you one."

"You don't owe me jack or shit." Jasper responded dismissively. "I don't care if it's mine or not, no damn bird is gonna take something out of my hand and just get away with it." He stared at the pokéball a moment longer, then scanned it with his pokédex and tossed it. The flash of light revealed a tired and bruised, but mostly okay Rookidee. His hand found the Medicine pocket of his backpack and quickly fished out a bottle of Potion. The Rookidee tried to hop back when Jasper approached it, but he firmly grabbed its head and held it in place while he sprayed both of its wings, then its chest, then anywhere else he saw cuts or bruises. "That's that, now that you've learned a thing or two about stealing and ass-kickings, get a move on."

With a last double check that Rookidee's data was updated in the pokédex, he scanned the pokéball that caught the bird and untagged it, releasing it. "Please let the train not be too crowded." Was the last thing he said to the air before walking off towards Wedgehurst station, more than ready for the day to be over.

He can say that all he wants, and he can say it in the least appealing way possible, it doesn't matter. Him doing her a favor is going to hang over her head until she finds a way to repay him. Which… looks like it's going to be awhile. She'll have to catch him off guard since it's clear he's not going to take anything from her willingly. They're headed for a long train ride, she'll have plenty of time to begrudgingly think about what she can do.

Do they serve lunch/dinner on the trains? She could pay for his. That would be quick and easy enough. "Ri--" She begins only to stop talking when he tells his new catch to leave. Again?! Is this his thing? Is he trying to have a gimmick? You know what? She's not going down that road by asking again…

"This has been a weird day." She says with an exasperated sigh. As she takes a step to make the trek back to the station, a flutter of wings can be heard. She whirls around to see the newly released Rookidee flying towards her-- and lands on her shoulder.

"...Can I help you?" She asks, not hiding her degree of annoyance.
"Dee~" The Rookidee holds its wing in front of its head like a shield while flapping the other aggressively. After a few seconds of… that, it resumes its normal stance and looks at her expectantly, giving a small hop.

"Uh." What?

Her confusion earns her a small peck to the forehead, though it's not painful… it's not aggressive at all. It's more like he's trying to point, maybe? "Me?" She asks. "You wanna come with me?"

"Rook!" Another bounce.

"Well… you are pretty tough. The way you held your own against a rock type was pretty cool." Melody glances to the floating Nightshot. "What do you think?"

"Pypy!" The Dreepy agrees with an excited clap and a small circle in the air.

"Guess you're in," Melody smiles just slightly as she reaches for an empty Pokeball, "-- but if you steal from me again, you're dinner." With that, she holds the Pokeball out to Rookidee, who happily taps it with his beak.

Shake. Shake. Shake. Ding.

The teen's smile grows as she tosses the ball slightly into the air, calling their new friend back out. The vibrant light lands directly on her shoulder before taking shape again.

"Looks like we're a trio now."

Jasper, who'd been watching the exchange once he heard the bird's words, shrugged. "It must have been impressed by your guts facing down its friends. Don't disappoint it."
Oh, is that what it was trying to do by holding its wing over its face? Imitate her? "That right?" She asks the Rookidee.

"Rook." He nods-- which is more of a bob with its whole body since it doesn't really have a neck.

"I can dig it. You're pretty tough yourself." Melody says as she walks by Jasper. "-- Hey." She says, stopping to wait for the other trainer. "Once I train this guy up some more, want a rematch?" They both know this little bird won't be weak to rocks forever.

"Sure, why not?" Jasper agreed, knowing they'd run into each other again on the journey anyways. "If it's a pokémon battle, even Sonia wouldn't get in our way."

"... Does that make us rivals?" Melody asks after a several second pause.

"I guess?" He shrugged. "Why do we need to label ourselves?" Jasper began to make his way back towards town proper again only for something to fling itself onto his back, causing him to stumble and barely avoid a makeout session with the dirt. "What the fuck!? I'm being ambushed, I thought we scared all those birds off! And why is it so heavy!"

Melody could tell what was on him right away, and after another moment of struggling they both heard a loud, happy "Lax!" At that Jasper stopped moving so suddenly that the Munchlax fell to the ground and had to regain its balance as the trainer turned on it. "It's you? The'hell d'you want?" The Munchlax smiled, reached a hand into its fur and pulled out what looked like an apple? Before the trainer could question it further, the blue bear took a huge bite out of the apple, then held it up so both trainers could see as… the bite grew back and left a full apple again?! "What?!" Jasper exclaimed, genuinely shocked. "Is that apple magic?!"

Jasper's big thigh pocket beeped and he pulled out his green pokédex. When he held it up to the apple, it scanned it the same way it did pokémon and pokéballs. "Leftovers: A mysterious food item found only in the possession of Munchlax and Snorlax. This apple-like article seems to infinitely regenerate any damage done to its body and continue to be edible. It provides no nutrition and cannot supplant real food, nor can it be eaten by anything other than a pokémon. However, pokémon who ingest bites of Leftovers do recover from their wounds over time. To this day scientists and pokémon professors wrack their brains over the origins and potential uses of Leftovers, but as of yet no further information or practical applications have been proven."

He took the Leftovers from the Munchlax and stared at it in unabashed awe. "Holy crap...and I can have this?" The pokémon nodded vigorously as Faust joined them to stare at the enigmatic apparently-not-an-apple. Jasper rubbed the back of his head and closed his eyes for a few seconds before bending down to eye level with the Munchlax. "I don't know where you got this thing or how it even exists, but sure, thanks. Looks like you really did learn a thing or two about not being selfish from that ass-kicking, eh? Alright, fine." He took the same pokéball that had contained Melody's new Rookidee only a little over a minute ago and held it out. "This is a good enough reward already, but why don't you come with me? I think you've proven yourself well enough." It didn't even hesitate to to slap the button offered to it, disappearing into the pokéball with an elated "Lax!" And an undeniable Click!

"That's that, is it?" Jasper questioned nobody in particular, looking at the pokéball for a few seconds before setting it on his belt.

This day is just one twist after another, huh? Melody shoves her hands into her jacket pockets and walks past Jasper. "Now I get it." She says in a teasing tone. "They have to give you something to earn a spot on your team." No, that's not it and she knows it. The Pokemon get to choose whether they come along with Jasper or not. That's… actually nice. Jasper's got a nice side, eh? That might just be the biggest twist of them all.

"Nah, I just don't want anyone with me that's too soft or gonna run away after a harsh word or two." He deflected the statement. "It's not like I need payment...just...proof." That, at least, felt right to say. "Long as I know I ain't wastin' my time." Still poking at him as ever, but he had some ammo of his own, so he matched her tone and fired back. "What happened to not takin' my scraps?"

"Are you calling my Pokemon a scrap? I should kick your ass for that." She says, her tone still very much teasing. The Rookidee puffs out his chest in defiance. He's got her and she knows it, but she's not bad at deflecting either. Truthfully she was not going to pass up on a very strong, very determined Pokemon just because it belonged to this jerk-sneasel for about seventeen seconds. It also seemed pretty douchey to tell Rookidee that, no, he couldn't come along with her, because of forces beyond his control.

Jasper smirked and looked right into the Rookidee's eyes. "It's definitely scrappy, and there's nothing wrong with that." He allowed the pokémon one honest compliment and went back to moseying on his way. "Keep it up, little bird. That lady's gonna get you in plenty of trouble."

"Oh, yeah, and your new Munchlax is so much better off." She says, stretching her arms out before resting them behind her head. She can see the outline of the station coming into view now. Looks like they might just make it to the train after all. "Walk fast. If we hang around, we might get roped into doing more good samaritan work." She glances over to her fellow punk one final time. "And we've way overdone it on the good deeds already."

Epoch 1.3: Wedgehurst Town
The Shepherd's Cry for Help! Mystery Past?

"So you only managed to replicate the data transfer and information thingy from the Pokedex to the flip-phone?" asked Tori, staring at Seto with a blank look.

The male hesitantly nodded, flinching when the women started to glare. "I-I tried to do the same to the scanner, but I couldn't figure out how…"

"Thank Goodness!" exclaimed Tori, kneeling down and put her hands in praying position, looking up at the sky. "Thank arceus…"

"Excuse me?!" Seto exclaimed, but closed his mouth, seeing Tori give him a glare.

"Your lucky fool! If you did replicate the scan, imagine the trouble you'd be in! You never asked for permission either! Luckily, I told Sachi to not tell anyone about that function in the new flip-phone, or else your ass would be hauled away instantly!"

"You're saying it like Sachi would tattle-tale on me! She'd never!" Seto assured, placing a hand over his heart. He turned towards Sachi, blinking as he stared. "Tori… where's Sachi?"

"She left. Said she'd call us when she was on the train."

"What?! I wanted to walk her there!"

"What are you! Her boyfriend?!" Tori sassed, but then narrowed her eyes as her own words registered. "I'll remind you that anyone who wants to be with her will have to go through me first!"

"Who said anything about a boyfriend?!" Seto exclaimed. He took a deep breath, then sighed, "I was hoping to make sure she made it to the train safely…"

"She'll be fine. She has Tora and Bolt, I doubt those two would let anything happen to her." assured Tori, then gave the male a smirk. "Unlike Yen, Bolt doesn't have an addiction to booze and ask every time."

"Don't bring that up!"

"Mister Samuel… is everything ok?" The old man with gray hair and beard, Samuel the Shepherd, turned at the voice. He saw a familiar teen standing behind him, holding a Yamper with her feline partner, Tora, on her right shoulder.

"Ah… Sachi, dear. How have you been?" the old man smiled, waving the teen over to the bench he was sitting at.

He'd known Sachi for a while, remembering when she would offer to help round up the Wooloo, only to end up covered in grass at the end of the day. At first, he thought that her parents were around and allowed her to roam free... but after seeing no parents for a while, he asked her and she said that her father is working, so she comes outside since the house is lonely. He concluded that she didn't like being alone in the house and went out helping people to relieve her loneliness by being around others. Even though she doesn't speak much, she's very polite and willing to help anyone and comply with any request.

"Good… caught Bolt." Sachi motioned to the Yamper in her arms, who was looking around, his nose twitching. Samuel smiled at the pokemon, noticing that the Yamper looked like it wanted to run around in the large field, but at the same time, didn't want to leave Sachi's warmth. He chuckled before waving his hand, motioning the girl over. Sachi walked over to his side, looking over the ranch that belonged to Samuel.
Spoiler:

"I didn't want to burden you, Sachi dear… But since you have a Yamper of your own, could you help me with one last problem before you leave?" Samuel requested, looking over at the teen with a smile. He knew that Sachi would be leaving for Motosuke soon and would miss the young teen, but it can't be helped. It's her time to leave the nest, thankfully her father is on a business trip, so he can't stop her from leaving.

"Help… I can help." assured Sachi as Bolt barked, as if agreeing.

"I see… that's good." Samuel smiled, looking out at his ranch before signing. He looked at Sachi, who gave him a worried look. "You see…" Samuel explained his situation: a shipment of wool was due yesterday, but he wasn't able to make the deadline. His Wooloo are scattered around the ranch, so he needs them rounded up so he can get the wool trimmed off them and immediately send off before his business is impacted. And worse, his Yamper is at the PC because his paw is injured and can't help with the work today. He needs to round up the Wooloo quickly before it's too late, but he can't think of how to do so without his trusty partner's help. That's when Sachi appeared with Bolt and he thought of a solution.

"Teach Bolt to herd…?" repeated Sachi, blinking as Samuel smiled, nodding his head.

"Yes. I hope you don't mind… it might take some time off your day, but it might be useful in the future." Samuel assured, looking around the ranch for a hint of his Wooloo. Alas, he couldn't find them, but maybe…

"Might be a good idea." mumbled Sachi, looking down at Bolt, who stared up at his trainer with a confused expression. She thought for a few seconds before looking at the Shepherd and nodded, earning a smile.

"Alright. It would usually take up to weeks for him to learn how to herd, but I have a good feeling about this little Yamper."

A Few Hours later…

"Well… i'll be! Arceus, this little fellow is a very fast learner!" praised Samuel as he watched Bolt herd another Wooloo into the barn. After an hour and a half of teaching Yamper how to herd, he let him roam the fields. However, he didn't expect the little one to already know how to herd, nonetheless found the Wooloo so quickly and herd them back to the barn. "That or he's had experience before…. Did you just catch him today Sachi dear?"

Sachi nodded, watching Bolt with a surprised expression. If he had experience herding, does that mean he used to have a trainer? Where did he learn to herd?

"I see… He must've had training beforehand, probably from his previous trainer who trained him." Samuel suggested, watching as Bolt brought over another Wooloo. He had a dozen in his ranch and Bolt found about half of them so far. "That or he's a fast learner and natural, but I doubt it. Even if he learns fast, it still would take him at least a week to learn, not just a couple hours."

"..." Sachi didn't reply, she didn't know what to say. Bolt had a previous owner, but why wasn't he with them? Did something happen?

"I also noticed how quickly he got attached to you." Samuel added, remembering how close Bolt was to Sachi despite barely knowing her. "Did you meet a Yamper before by chance?"

"I… don't recall…" Sachi trailed off, seeing Bolt return, but with two Wooloo this time. That makes it eight Wooloo he found and herded back so far. "I've met pokemon before, but father never let me catch one. The only reason I managed to keep Tora was because the Professor suggested it and father didn't have the heart to refuse a Professor's advice."

"Hmm…" Samuel stared at Sachi for a few seconds before looking out at Bolt, who ran out the barn and into the grassy field, looking for more Wooloo. "It sounds like you met him before, but you don't recall. However, he certainly remembers you." He saw Sachi's expression and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Don't force yourself to remember."

She turned to Samuel, shocked, "How…?" How did he know she was upset? She was upset at herself for not remembering if she had met Bolt before or not. And for not convincing her father more to allow her to catch a pokemon back then. She wanted to remember what she did to make Bolt very attached to her…

"I can see it, Sachi dear." Samuel smiled, motioning to Bolt, who returned with three Wooloo this time. He was running beside them as they ran to where the puppy pokemon was directing them. If one tried to move away from the small group, Bolt would pretend to try and bite their feet, which gets them back in line. "Don't worry, it'll come to you. I don't blame you for forgetting, your father never really let you be around pokemon alot."

Sachi nodded, remembering her childhood in her home region and here in Galar. An image of a black haired woman with green eyes so much like hers and similar hairstyle to her own flashed through her mind. She shook her head, removing the thought. I can't think about that right now… still not time… The teen grabbed her phone, flipping it open to see the time, "It's almost time for the train, Mr. Samuel. I have to leave soon."

"I understand. Thank you and Bolt for your help, I don't know what would have happened if you didn't come by." Samuel thanked, holding a small box. Sachi blinked, staring at the Shepherd. When did he get the box? "This is for you, Sachi dear."

"For me?" Repeated Sachi, confused. She hesitantly took the box, and the contents inside shocked her when she opened it. "Moomoo Milk? Are you sure Mister Samuel?" In that instant, Bolt ran over to her side after rounding up the last Wooloo, making sure the gate closed afterwards.

"I'm sure Sachi dear, you've helped me more than you think. Now take this and go, your train is coming." Samuel gently pushed Sachi away a bit, towards the direction of the train. "And don't think much about Bolt's herding experience. Wait for it to come, there's no need to rush those kinds of things."

Achille Béringer || 18 || ♂️
Location: Route 2
Current Status: Gone Fishin'

Fishing, Achille decided, was a sport for idiots with nothing better to do. His little pokéball styled bobber sat on the river's surface with nary a single dip beneath the water, as it had for the past hour. As he looked across the shore and saw the adult fishermen with their expensive poles left leaning on stands, their owners chatting and drinking idlely, he couldn't help but feel a little lied to. He had the same basic rod they gave out to everyone without one, the same rods that were being given to the winners of this tournament. Unfortunately, this rod wasn't one that he could just leave on the shore and walk away like those, being little more than a rod with a spool and line. At least, if he didn't want to have to fish it out of the river later that is.

"Do the rivers in Galar not have fish," he muttered under his breath, waving the rod trying to make the line wiggle and hopefully attract a Magikarp. All that maneuver achieved was getting him a few dirty looks from the people around him and the feeling that he just succeeded in scaring away the fish. With one more sigh of frustration, he reeled in the hook and packed up to go to a less crowded area, Joiuse following behind him.

As he walked along the edge of the river he watched the other fishers to find what he had been missing with this Arceus-blasted sport. A family sat on a plaid picnic blanket as their daughter, a young blond kid in a pikachu shirt, cast the rod and reeled it in over and over. At least she is having fun I suppose.

He passed someone close to his own age on his shore that somehow held the rod in his lap while he read through a schoolbook. Beside him a Yamper napped in the sunlight, yipping softly at something in his dreams. Achille stopped to watch the dreaming pokémon with a smile before a fish decided to bite the owner's hook, at which point Achille hurried away.

As he neared the end of the tournament grounds he decided that a small bend in the river looked like his best bet. Being this far away from the judge's table meant the only people out here was one very stern looking old man, entirely concentrated on his bobber, and a couple who weren't even part of the tournament.

He took a seat near the river's edge, a decent distance from the couple (who had annoyingly taken the only nearby shady tree). He started prepping his rod for another Arceus-forsaken round of fishing, but realized he had somehow tangled his fishing line while moving locations. He muttered some words that had no business in polite company as he set to work trying to untangle it. He fumbled the thin line in his fingers, not able to find where it was twisted in on it's self. His frustration only lead to mistakes, which further tangled it into an incomprehensible mess of lines and loops. One bad pull of the line and he realized he formed a tight knot that he doubted he could even untie. He let out a not so muttered curse before calling over Joiuse and using her sharpened edge to cut the line.

He tied his hook again and pulled out some of the bait the organizers gave him. He pricked his thumb while baiting the hook, letting out an angry fais chier which earned him a stern hmm from Joiuse. The sword pokémon had decided the her vigilant guard was apparently too much effort, and her new job was watching Achille's misadventures and chiding his language.

With line fixed and bait set finally, he cast his line into a promising stretch of river.

And he waited...

… and he waited...

… and he waited...

.. Merde this is a lot of waiting...

… and right when he was sure that he had dozed off, Achille's line tugged so hard it nearly pulled the fishing rod from his hand.

Achille snapped to attention and dug his heels into the ground. The grass proved too slick for him to get a good foothold, and he soon found himself sliding towards a river. As the shore approached he feared he was going to be pulled into the river, before a shape suddenly moved in front of him and caught his foot. The sudden foothold helped him find purchase with his heel, and he quickly scrambled to a standing position and began trying to tire out the fish. As he began what was sure to be a long battle, he glanced down to identify his savior. Below him, wedged in the ground, was an unsheathed Joiuse.

After several minutes of work wearing the fish down, which earned him the attention of the three prior river occupants and a woman who happened to be walking by, he was finally able to begin reeling the fish in. Still, he feared his line was going to break each time he started pulling the fish in and lost progress several times as the fish hit a second... third... forth... fifth wind. He started to consider cutting his losses and cutting the line when the water's surface was breached for the first time, revealing a large Magikarp with a harsh looking scar across his forehead.

"I've got you now, petite enculé." Achille got his own second wind at the sight, and redoubled on trying to drag the monster onto shore. The more seasoned fisherman on the other shore got visible excited seeing the Magikarp, and shouted something Achille couldn't hear over the violent splashing of his battle.

Achille reeled until he was sure his arm would fall off, and the beast was almost beached. Joiuse decided to lend a helping hand, slipping between his shirt and jacket and pulling back (thankfully with her sheath back on). It wasn't a lot of force, but Achille's muscles appreciated every little bit. Finally, as his muscles reached their breaking point, the Magikarp jumped at the same time he yanked the line towards himself and was flung towards Achille.

Realizing that the now airborne fish was on a collision course with himself as a consequence of his desperate pull, Achille dropped his rod and reached out his arms.

It took a few seconds for him to realize what happened next. He first realized he was lying on the ground (well, lying on Joiuse). His shirt was really wet and there was something struggling in his arms. He opened his eyes, squinting at the sunlight as he realized his sunglasses had been knocked off in the collision. He pulled his head up to find what he even had his arms around, and realized he had somehow caught the now very angry Magikarp.

"Fils de pute! Victoire!" He shouted at the sky, kicking his feet a few times in excitement. "The rivers of Galar now bow to me!"

His celebration was cut a bit short when the other fisherman's face came into view. "You okay lad?" The man asked, the concern in his voice being undercut by obvious excitement.

"Oui. I had a sword to break my fall"

"Here, lemme help you up." The man said, grabbing Achille's shoulder and elbow, helping pull him to his feet. Achille would normally insist he could get up himself, but the thought of trying to find his footing while fighting a slippery Magikarp did not sound appealing in the slightest. "That was some ruckus." He said, once he'd gotten the 'lad' steady on his feet again and made sure the Magikarp wasn't going to slip out of his grip. "I take it this is your first time fishing."

"Ou- Yeah..." Achille said, out of breath and holding onto his catch like his life depended on it. The adrenaline was coming down a little and the acute stinging of overexertion was being replaced with the dull throb of overwork. Still, he felt a lightness from the joy of accomplishment. That or he was lightheaded from an intense workout followed by suddenly falling on his back. "I've got... mixed feelings... about it." He wheezed.

The older man let out a deep belly laugh and wiped a bit of sweat from his brow with his flannel sleeve. "That's how the first big catch goes, alright. Most of our first catches also isn't Ol' Scar Eyes." He leaned down and grabbed Achille's sunglasses since the trainer was otherwise occupied.

"You are acquainted with this fish?" Achille asked the man, his breathing slowed enough for him to at least get full sentences out now. Something began to move under his jacket, nearly causing him to drop the Magikarp. Once Joiuse floated into view he realized that she had been there the entire time and just now decided to leave. She floated over to the fisherman and accepted the glasses onto her hilt. Achille offered a quiet pardon as she took her normal place floating behind his shoulder.

"Ay, let's get over to the judges table 'fore your arms fall off. I'll tell you along the way."

In the momentary excitement Achille forgot about the tournament, and the prospect of finally letting go of the struggling fish had a certain appeal. He hurried up to the old fisherman's side and matched pace with him. He waited with eager ears for the story behind this Magikarp, and the old man adjusted his cap before clearing his throat.

"That is Ol' Scar Eyes." The man began. "A few years back this river wasn't nearly this good for fishing. A pack of Barraskewda terrorized the other fish and were frankly too dangerous for anyone other than a skilled trainer to fish up. Vicious little buggers. A lot of the other water types left, and those that remained were driven away from the hooks by the Barraskewds, who wanted the bait themselves.

"What ended up scaring off the bastards was a bunch of Magikarp of all things. They like to switch between a few different feeding grounds, and enough of them got right pissed at losing this spot to do something about it. It was a full blown war between the two, for about a year the two would fight it out and take the spot back and forth. The Magikarp proved to be tough enough bastards that the Barraskewda decided it wasn't worth it, and let them keep the area.

"Now, there were a lot of Magikarp that showed up to fight it out over that year, but there were 6 of 'em that showed up to most fights and fought like proper hooligans. Scar Eyes is one of them."

"Sounds like a real salaud." Achille said, earning him an annoyed "hoonnn" from behind him. He turned his head to the sword at the blatant hypocrisy between her treatment of the two humans. "That one wasn't even that bad."

The fisherman chuckled at the lad's chiding before calling his attention ahead of them again. "The judges table isn't that far away, why don't you go and get that submitted."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Achille left the judging with a sense of smug satisfaction. Scar Eyes hadn't been the largest Magikarp caught that evening, but it was by far the largest caught by a new fisherman and easily broke into the top 10. When starting this tournament he didn't even care about the prize itself, but now fuck it he won that shit.

The real question for him now was what to do with the Magikarp. It had settled down and allowed itself to be judged, but now that he held the fish in his arms to release it to the river it fought him again. He originally joined the tournament to find a Magikarp like this for his team, but he was also strangely moved by the story? The Magikarp was here keeping the peace, albeit in a strangely violent way. It was with a heavy heart that he leaned down to release his scarred captive into the water.

And the fish fucking slapped him in the face with his tail as soon as he let go. It was no accident, he released it far enough away from his face so that wouldn't happen. This fish threw himself into the air to do this.

"You want to go, asshole?" Achille yelled, earning him a very shocked gasp from Joiuse and the attention of pretty much everyone else that milled around the judge's table. A few members of the crowd snickered, piecing together what happened, while the more "upright" members tutted their disapproval. Ignoring the crowd, he pulled out an empty pokéball and dropped it on the ground in front of the orange hell-fish. "We can fight if you want, Scar Eyes."

Scar Eyes responded by diving beneath the water. A few seconds passed, excruciatingly slowly, as Achille felt embarrassed for even challenging a fish like that. The water's surface suddenly broke as the Magikarp leaped out of the water, spitting out a round stone towards where Achille dropped his Pokéball.

Achille broke into a wide grin at the return of his challenge. He turned around to look at Joiuse. "Shall we?" He asked, reaching his hand his head. He heard a hum in reply, and felt the grip hit his palm. He secured his grip and felt the weight of the Pokémon drop into his hand before swinging her in a large vertical arc, ending the motion when he was pointing at the Magikarp. "Let's settle this." He declared, dropping Joiuse to begin the battle as he pulled out his Pokédex.

He sat back and let Magikarp make the first move (like a real gentleman). The orange fish accelerated suddenly towards the shore, leaping out and delivering a flying Tackle to the now-upright sword. The Honedge was knocked to the floor by the Magikarp's slam, her eye wincing from the impact as the Magikarp landed on her again.

"Get out from under him," Achille shouted, glancing down at his Pokédex to confirm his next move. "Hit him with Shadow Sneak!"

The Honedge's shadow expanded beyond where it should naturally end, stretching like a longer blade made of blackness. As it reached about a foot-and-a-half beyond her body it suddenly jumped up like a scorpions tail, a flat sheet of darkness floating in the air. The shadow curved and darted for the Magikarp, impacting it's belly and knocking it off of Joiuse and further from the river.

The water-type bounced a few times before rolling to a stop. With no water to propel him forward he resorted to weak flopping on the ground, a harmless Splash attack. Achille could have thrown the Pokéball at this point to end it, but this was just sad.

"Make this fair please." He shouted a second command to the steel-type, receiving a look of concern from his own Pokémon at the act of mercy. "Look, let's not win when he can't even fight back. Just Fury Cutter him into the river again."

Joiuse turned back to her foe warily, levitating across the ground to the helpless fish. She pulled off her sheath with her hand-like ribbon, revealing the polished blade underneath. The blade glowed a faint green as reached the Magikarp, and the sword Pokémon did a single flip through the air. As her blade neared the end of it's arc she angled it to impact her foe in a way that he was sent flying back towards the river, splashing unceremoniously into the body of water. Joiuse resheathed herself and waited for her next command.

The water was still for another few seconds, which left Achille wondering if he had acted too harshly towards the exhausted fish.

His wondering was cut short when the Magikarp launched himself out of the water again, even faster than his last tackle. Joiuse was caught off guard and unable to avoid the attack, taking the full weight of the fish straight to her center of (anti?)gravity. She was nimble enough to avoid Scar Eyes from landing atop her again. She quickly righted herself (although she was still a little wobbly from the Tackle) and created a bit of distance between them.

"The idiot is trapped again," Achille said, sighing and putting his head in his hands. "Look, just Fury Cutter him again. I care if you send him back to the river or not."

The Honedge pulled her sheath off once more and moved in to deliver the final blow. As she neared her gasping enemy a mischievous glint spread across the Magikarps eyes. When Joiuse was in range he suddenly started Flailing violently on the ground. The desperate move generated a lot of force, and it was all being directed at Joiuse with the few attacks that actually made contact. The ghostly weapon managed to free herself from the onslaught and retreat while the fish finished wearing itself out.

Achille watched the entire thing with joyful surprise. That bastard was slippery, faking being helpless like that. "This is over." He announced, turning back to the crowd who were watching with great interest. Even the stuffy ones who had tutted about his choice of language earlier couldn't help but watch the epic struggle between man and sentient sword versus fish. "Aerial Ace him back over to me please, Joiuse."

The wobbly sword gave a shout of her own, speeding towards the karp and slamming her blade into the now deeply gasping fish. The Magikarp bounced over to the feet of Achille. The trainer kneeled down next to the wild Pokemon and smiled. "I win," he declared as he primed a Pokéball and dropped it on the Pokémon.

There was a token wiggle of resistance from the Pokéball once it landed, but after that it stood motionless and clicked to indicate a successful capture. Achille collected his Pokéball, stood to face the crowd, and bowed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the tournament well and truly over, Achille sat on the edge of the river away from everyone else and released his new teammate. Scar Eyes appeared in a flash of light on the rivers surface, now fully rested. The first thing the Pokémon did with his newfound freedom was splash water on Achilles shoes.

"You really are an asshole, aren't you." He asked the Pokémon with a chuckle. The Magikarp looked up at him proudly, and Achille could swear he heard a chuckle coming out of that fish. "Well, I do suppose you need a better name than Scar Eyes now that you're not just a punk anymore."

He sat and thought for a few minutes for something that fit the fish before snapping his fingers. "You don't seem like one much for authority... so what about Proudhon?"

The Magikarp... no... Proudhon jumped in the air with agreement.

Achille's phone buzzed, receiving a message about the stopped train in town. The Rail Blockage has cleared. The Wedgehurst station is now returning to it's regular departure schedule. The 4:30 train will be leaving as soon as final inspection is complete.

"Shit, I think we need to be on that train." He sheepishly admitted to his Pokémon, before scrambling for his stuff.

The Quest of 100 Friends

Friends Made

1

......

vs. Cyndaquil

Before Valerie graduated, she was one who had the lowest grades in the class, or perhaps, very close to it. She was not partiularly interested in studying as she was in just meeting new friends with pokémon and with her classmates. That was a admirable trait of hers, according to Professor Sonia, but she was lacking in everything else. One day, she called Valerie to the classroom to have a chat with her alone. "...Honestly, between you and Ralph, you both don't have a single ounce of concentration!" she started. "That's a feat within it self..."

"Whoooa, you mean it Teach?!" Valerie beamed.

"That wasn't a compliment!" the professor said with a followed up sigh. "Look, you're on the verge of failing this year. If you can just take your studies a bit more seriously..."

"Awwww, blimey Teach, I hate reading!" Valerie complained. "Sides', I ain't as smart as Jassy or Clo-ers or Raphie, anyway. I just wanna meet all kinds of new friends, y'know?"

"I know that, and it's great you wanna meet new friends," the professor said with a more sullen look. "But you need to learn more about the pokémon world too." she then sat Valerie down and took a glance from the window that led to outside. "In this world, we humans live alongside pokémon as friends. At times we play together, and at other times we work together. Some people use their Pokémon to battle and develop closer bonds with them. But, we don't know everything about Pokemon as of yet, because it's always surrounded by mystery. There can be many obstacles in your path, and many things along your journey you can use to learn about yourself. That's why we have schools like this one to help nurture new and upcoming trainers to go into the world on their own, to help unravel these mysteries too."

"Uhhhh huuuuhhh..." Valerie could only reply, somewhat mystified. "I totally hear ya', Teach!"

"Is that right?" the Professor replied, giving Valerie a suspicious look.

"Totally! It's all in the vault!"

"Care to repeat what I said in your own words, then?"

"No prob, teach!" Valerie reassured. "The pokemon world is uh... something something something, because we live with pokemon and um... something about mysteries and journeys because we are all friends and that's why we have um... something, because of something else! See? Told ya'!"

"Wow. My work is done," the professor proclaimed, rolling her eyes. "But just in case Valerie, why don't you read over some of the past pokemon material that was taught in class?"

"Awwww Teach, do I have tooooo?" Valerie pouted, only to be replied with a soft chop on her head.

"Don't talk back, just do it," the professor ordered. She silently then exited the classroom, leaving Valerie finally succumbed, pouting her way to the nearby bookshelf, and grabbing a few books. As she went back to her desk, she peered outside the window, to see a couple of her classmates having a battle against each other. One was using a Bulbasaur, while the other was using a small blue-backed and beige coloured pokemon. The Bulbasaur and the other pokemon tackled against each other, resulting in the smaller pokemon being pushed back. The Bulbasaur's trainer was proud of its power, while the other trainer was left seemingly irritated.

"Wonder what's that?" Valerie mumbled to herself. She flipped through the pages of a book that has quite a few pages of a few pokemon. She quickly flipped through each page until she found the page where the exact pokemon was listed on. The page had its picture, with the name of the pokemon inside. "Cyn...da...quil? Hope I said that right... And the green guy is... Bulbasaur, right? Gaaah, hope Teach doesn't put this on a future test..."

****

That following night, Valerie at least tried to continue to study, but her short attention span was in the way. Constantly. So, in her own change of pace, she decided to take a short walk out in the night. The calm, peaceful atmosphere in the town was always a nice feeling for Val, as in her own words, she likes to go outside during this time to just... think about things! Though her small thought process by the sound of thumping from a short distance. Curious, she decided to follow the source of the sound.

Eventually she came across a small field from the outskirts of town. It wasn't a field that was dense of greenery, but the trees and grass still made it quite a serene place to relax if you were so inclined to. At any rate, the sound of the thumping came from nearby. Valerie saw a small pokemon, hitting itself against a tree over and over. But, it was familiar to Valerie. "Isn't that... what's its name?" she pondered for a few moments, until after the Pokemon hit the tree once more. "Aaaah wait, it's... Cyndaquil!" The Cyndaquil was using its Tackle attack against the tree. Eventually it stopped, but then tried to force out something... maybe from its back? Valerie didn't approach it and just kept on observing it. It was pumping itself up, over and over... but then toppled over itself. It shook its head and got back up, seemingly disappointed.

"I wonder what he's up to...?"

****

The next day, Valerie quietly sat at her seat, moaning as she (tried) studying a few books. Nothing was more boring. That was until, she heard a few sounds from outside - it was from a couple of students, who were practicing some battle techniques in the school's courtyard. One trainer had a pokemon who had a small black-striped shell, which was a perky little Turtwig, and the other had something that Valerie was quite familiar with by now: a Cyndaquil. Valerie could hear them calling out orders.

"Tackle attack!" the student with the Turtwig called out.

"You use Tackle too!" the other with Cyndaquil responded. The two small pokemon ran towards each other. When the two eventually collided with their attacks, the Cyndaquil got the worst of it and was sent flying back. "Come on, why are you so weak?!"

"Heh, check this out! Turtwig... Razor Leaf!" the Turtwig sent out a barrage of leaves towards its target, hurling them in a spinning motion towards the Cyndaquil.

"We'll just have to burn them off with Ember! Go!" The Cyndaquil tried, clenching its hands together, attempting to call its fire-type attacks, but nothing happened. Soon it was struck down by the flurries of leaves from the Turtwig's Razor Leaf, causing it to collapse. "Uuugh, not again! This useless pokemon--"

"Are you sure it's just the pokemon?" the other student laughed.

"I could of won if I had a different pokemon! Literally anything else!"

Valerie meanwhile, turned back to the book she was trying to read, but soon, Professor Sonia came in the classroom. "Ey' yo... Teach?" Valerie greeted her as she walked in. "Can you tell me what you know about a Cyndaquil?"

"Cyndaquil, huh?" the Professor repeated. She was intrigued by Valerie's sudden initiative, and so, she happily decided to oblige her. "Well, let's see... Cyndaquil is a Fire-type pokemon, mainly found in Johto... oh! It can also ignite flames on its back."

Ignite flames from its back... that's what he was trying to do? Valerie sat in thought. "But Teach, how does it... ignite its flames?"

"Oh, ah... you know it has four red spots on its back, right? Those can erupt into flames," the Professor continued. "Cyndaquil are capable of defending itself using these flames, and the fire grows more powerful as it becomes angry or defensive."

"Hmmm..." Valerie sat to absorb what she learned. She didn't quite understand it fully, but... if a Cyndaquil gets mad enough, it ignites its flames? Still though, why couldn't this one ignite its flames? That's when the classroom door flew open.

"Hey! Professor!" it was the same student who was using the Cyndaquil. He got out the pokeball it was apparently staying in, and slammed it on a desk nearby. "I don't want this pokemon anymore, it's too weak! Can't I practice with something different, please?"

"You shouldn't call a pokemon too weak, it's doing its best!" the Professor scolded. But somehow, she gave in. "Alright... I'll see what I can do." With an excited cheer from the student, he blazed out of the door, pumping his fists in the air. The Professor picked up the pokeball. She gave it a pitiful, saddened look.

"...Not again..."

"Muh? What's up, Teach?" Valerie asked, after overhearing the professor's mumbling to herself. She to turned to Valerie, still holding the pokeball.

"Students always seem to be complaining about this particular pokemon," she explained. "Remember when I told you that a Cyndaquil can ignite flames from the red spots on its back? Well, this one can't... for whatever reason. Maybe its too young, or maybe too inexperienced, but..."

Valerie stared at the pokeball. That stinks... is that why I saw it that night? Was it... training?

****

The Cyndaquil went back to training that following night. He used his tackle attack over and over against the same tree trunk, building up his power enough to ignite his flames. But every time he tried, he would fizzle out, and stumble over. His latest attempt when he tried this time, it only caused him to hit face first against the tree's trunk. He got up, but this time, more discouraged. He hadn't remembered the first time he started training like this, but no matter how hard he tried, he could never have beaten pokemon that had true talent, or was strong from the get-go. He couldn't even make flames, like the other Fire-type pokemon from the academy. He then started to walk away, but was stopped by a lone figure.

"S'matter, bro? You taking a break already?" It was Valerie, who was once again watching the Cyndaquil from a small distance, but this time decided to approach him. The Cyndaquil gazed on Valerie, but then turned away, focusing his attention back to tackling his target. Val rubbed the back of her head. "So uuuuh, you're trying to make some flames, right? Cause I think it's super rad!"

Cyndaquil glanced briefly towards Val, then back to his target. Valerie gave him a soft smile. "I'm sorry about your loss the other day, Cynda-bro, buuuuut... I still think you're one amazing lil'guy!"

"Cynda."

"Nooooo you dummy, I'm not just sayin' that! It's cause you're working hard to get strong and make all sorts of new buddies, right? That's just like me!"

"Cynda, Cyndaquil..."

"I totes get what you're saying, Cynda-bro, and y'know, I'm kinda the same way!" Cyndaquil turned back at Valerie. Although, Valerie couldn't really understand what Cyndaquil was trying to say, she always went with a I think I can get the gist of it approach. She crept closer to the young fire pokemon. "Heeeey, you know something, flame-bro? I'm a failure too, y'know. But no probs, no probs! We can graduate from failure academy together!" The Cyndaquil looked at Valerie awkwardly. That was... certainly a strange way for comforting him. Still, Valerie just laughed heartily. She then had an idea.

"Ding-ding! I just remembered!" she started. "You can ignite your flames after getting super pumped up! Right?"

"Quil.

"Then we just gotta do some super-special-awesome, super-secret-killer training! Then you'll be all, KABOOM! WOOSH! BAM! Owning all those other newbies and noobs!"

"Cyn?"

"No worried, mate! I've got the first training thingy in mind!" Valerie walked backwards a few feet, and assumed a defending ready stance. "Ready, Cynda-bro? Hit me with your best shot! Gimme your best tackle!" The Cyndaquil looked questionably at her, and became a little reluctant. It's not everyday where someone tells a pokemon to just... attack them? But Valerie was serious, with her cheerful, exciting grin. "C'mon, c'mon, c'mon! My body is ready, Cynda-bro!"

The Cyndaquil gave it a moment, but finally complied. He assumed his usual battle-ready stance, and once he was prepared, he kicked off with his feet, and lunged full-on towards Valerie. Valerie charged in too, attempting to counter back with... a tackle-like attack of her own. As it turned out, the Cyndaquil was knocked back, while Valerie dstood tall from the spot she stood in. "Don't tell me this is all you got, Cynda-bro!" Val cheered on. "You got this bro! Let's get it!"

The Cyndaquil, having more determination, lunged forward a bit more sharply, and more force than the previous attack. Cyndaquil still was pushed back, but this time, landed on his feet, while Valerie stumbled a bit. "Ooooh... I felt that one... That's the ticket!" Valerie said in glee. "Buuut you can do better! Give me all you got!"

"Cynda!"

"I don't plan on losin' either, Cynda-bro! Let's freaking go!"

The two continued on, training and fighting against each other. The sounds of rigorous clashing echoed, with the force even causing just a little bit of leaves to be knocked from the tree nearby. After their latest hit, Valerie and the Cyndaquil continued to square off. "Alllright, can you beat my ultimate-Valerie technique, final skill?!" Valerie charged forward, faster and tougher than she ever was previously. The Cyndaquil responded in kind, kicking off from his hind legs to deliver his hardest-hitting tackle attack.

But this time...

As a result of the clash, the Cyndaquil managed to overpower Valerie, and caused Valerie to be knocked off her feet. Her face even hit the ground as she tumbled over, with a cloud of dust quickly forming from the impact of where she landed. She slowly lifted her head from the ground, spitting out the dirt that flew into her mouth from impact. She then dusted herself off, only to then find an incredible sight: the Cyndaquil had ignited his flame. seemingly right before the impact of the two attacks. Valerie was starry-eyed and in complete bliss.

"Woohooo! Cynda-bro, Cynda-bro, yaaaaas queen!" she cheered on. The Cyndaquil's flames illumined the area. He took a moment, processing what just happened, but when he came around, the flames on his back died out. It was quite a fantastic feeling - it was the start on his path on becoming what he had sought for, to become a true Fire-type pokemon. Valerie excitingly picked up the Cyndaquil and swung in circles around and around with him, in celebration. The Cyndaquil happily wailed too, as this was a set accomplishment for him.

After a while, the two calmed down, and ended up sitting together on a bench within town. Valerie and the Cyndaquil exchanged glances, but then looked up at the starry sky together. "I think Teach might be right," Valerie said softly while continuing to star gaze, with the Cyndaquil turning to her. "I think there are a lot of cool things we should learn about the world of pokemon. And y'know something? I think I'm gonna learn all I can, and graduate from the academy!"

"Cynda!"

"After all, I can't just let you one up me, right?"

"Quil!"

"Btw Cynda-bro, when I do graduate... will you be my first friend? And my first pokemon?"

"Cynda? Quil! Cyndaquil!"

"Awesome-bellossom! Oh! And when the time comes, I wanna rematch with you! I won't lose next time!"

"Cynda! Cyndaquil!"

"Yup. We'll graduate from us being total failures into champs with 100 friends! Piece of cake!"

The battlefield nearby the town and the academy was at a buzz, with Valerie at one corner, and Johnny with his Zigzagoon at another. Valerie giggled in delight. "Maaaan, it's our first battle together, Flame-bro!" she said to her partner Cyndaquil. The Cyndaquil turned back towards her and nodded. Like Valerie's dream to make 100 friends, Flame wants to battle and meet as much strong pokemon as he can, to be the strongest Fire-type pokemon around. Valerie directed her gaze across the battlefield, to her opponent. "All set when you are, Johnny!"

Johnny huffed confidently, after he combed his hair thrice. "Sure thing, girlie," he said to her, as his own pokemon, prepared his battle stance. "Hope you're ready for a top-percentage fight!"

"We're ready for a top-percentage win!" Valerie confidently boasted, wasting little time for the battle to begin. Her Cyndaquil ignited himself, reading his battle stance too. "Go get em' Flame! Hard-hitting tackle! Give em' hell!"

"We won't lose this one, Ziggy! Show em' a tackle they'll never forget!"

The two pokemon ran up towards each other as fast as they can. When the two were in proximity of one another, they hit their bodies against one another with a strong tackle, creating a strong force between the two of them.

The two young trainer's clash was finally set to begin.

Chapter 1- 3 | Priceless Princess

Wedgehurst Town
761.png

Ruben sifted through the miscellaneous items that had been shelved in the gift shop. The only section he refused to browse was the crisp section. Despite his journey, he still had a diet to upkeep and it had to be tighter now that he wasn't able to train. The damn cast on his leg made sure of that. He arrived at the station at a reasonable time, so there was no need to rush and, for the most part, he'd avoided the traffic of fans who would surely mob him had they spotted him in a place as public as a train station. A couple of autographs signed already, but nothing too arduous.

He caught himself flipping through the pages of some downright strange magazines: Sailor Gardevoir? Cardcaptor Buneary? Who reads this stuff? He thought to himself with a snort. It wasn't something he was particularly interested in, but it would be completely dishonest to say that he hadn't spent a fair amount of time absent mindedly scanning the pages. He tossed them down, refusing to get any more invested than he already was.

Again his attention wandered, this time to his starter pokemon. Lesca, the little Bounsweet, had assembled herself a mini throne by plucking an obscure ensemble of cushions, books, and sun hats. What amused Ruben the most was the two Corviknight plushes she'd stationed to protect her creation. How could he not?

"Hi, umm…how much for that?" Ruben asked, pointing the woman at the counter toward the mess his pokemon had made with an apologetic smile.

"I could quote you a price for the cushions and the teddies, but the basket isn't really for sale. I'm sorry!" The woman cried out her apology, seeming genuinely hurt by the fact she had to refuse. She quickly counted up everything the Bounsweet had pulled together. She handed Ruben a receipt that stated a price of sixteen hundred poke and returned his apologetic smile.

"Throw in the basket and call it a flat twenty?" Ruben bartered with the utmost confidence, even going so far as to slip a ten across the counter. "No one will even know it's gone, and if they do, you've made profit off it." Although incredibly uncomfortable, Ruben's pressuring did just enough to get the girl to relent.

---

As he prodded forward, the clink of his crutches in full motion, Ruben scanned the station. With Lesca on his shoulder and the impression from his completely impractical new purchase bulging through his duffel bag, he was reasonably happy with how the day had gone so far.

"Hey! Isn't that Ruben Sancho!" A voice called out. Either side of a blink, Ruben had a clear view of the station, then his peripheral was filled with strangers demanding his attention.

"Sancho mate, you're a nightmare to play against in Pro Evo Football. Your card's so fast. Do you play Pro Evo? Can I get your Gamertag?"

*FLASH*

"I think you're gonna be the best in the world one day. You just gotta keep at it. Keep workin' y'know? Keep workin'. What you wearing that cast for then?"

*CLICK*

"How did you not finish that chance you had in the cup semi final against Hammerlocke United? My nan could've scored that with her left foot. And she's an amputee mate."

*SCRIBBLE*

"Can you sign my breasts? I want my boyfriend to see your name on me."

"What?" Ruben paused. The bizarre request stunning him back into reality. He raised the felt tip marker away from the heavily pierced goth girl's bosom and shook his head. "I'm sure your boyfriend's a great guy, I'm sure I don't have anything he doesn't." He explained, to the disbelief of the little grass type on his shoulder.

Lesca, the Bounsweet, had watched in awe as her trainer was mobbed by fan after fan. This was her trainer, adored in mass. The redhead woman in the labcoat had chosen well. This was what she deserved after all. With her trainer, what she deserved is what she'd get.

"The twelve thirty-five train to Motostoke will now be departing at sixteen fourty-two from platform one. The train was delayed due to an obstruction on the tracks. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused." A voice echoed from the overhead PA system.

"Thank Arceus." Ruben sighed.

---

Once he escaped the rabble of the main station, Ruben found himself in a segregated booth that overlooked the train platforms. Many sat outside and waited in the cold for their trains. Once again, he wasn't one of those who had to face normality. The more he had to face that fact, the more he was getting used to it. Enjoying it even. Being a celebrity came with some benefits after all.

His Bounsweet certainly enjoyed it. He had already set up the throne for her and she was quite content basking in the luxury. He even went so far as to get her a crown. It wouldn't hurt if he joined her. Would it? He was already in VIP, it wasn't like he had to feel guilty if he couldn't see other people with less than him. That was it. He finally found contentment, stretching out in the leather coated VIP seating and resting his cast laden leg on the opposing seats. His eyes finally closed.

"May I say…" A voice squawked, causing Ruben to tense up. It was a thick Wyndon accent. If he wasn't sitting in a train station right now, he'd have sworn he was being beckoned by royalty.

"Sorry, I can't sign anything right now." Ruben sighed, making no effort to hide his exhaustion. As he reached out and opened his eyes though, the woman was clutching her belongings in an odd-looking mixture of fear and disgust. She looked every bit a plumb sucker as her accent promised. Pokemon fur around her neck, expensive rings covering every bit of skin on her fingers that wasn't covering a joint, even her head told the story of a woman who expected nothing less than flawless with any hint of a grey hair dyed to a shimmering silver.

"Sign?" The woman questioned, looking at Ruben with a face full of skepticism. "No young man, I'm enquiring about that delightful little princess you have beside you." She smiled as she edged closer to the pokemon in question. Ruben could tell his Bounsweet was loving this already and she made no secret of it either. The conceited little grass type was peeking with one eye opened, the moment her value was called into question. That watching eye lingered expectantly on Ruben.

"Oh, her name's Lesca. I've got to travel around the region to earn my contract and I guess she's joining me in that. It's more complicated than it sounds." Ruben shrugged, much to the dissatisfaction of the Bounsweet.

"Sweeee." Lesca cooed, burrowing into her cushions like a cherry into the icing of a cake. She peeked again, smirking as she noticed the woman swooning at the sight of her.

"Ten thousand!" The woman exclaimed, chequebook in hand. While she had no concept of the numbers being quoted, the pokemon was more than happy to see such enthusiasm at the prospect of being allowed her company. She snuggled in her makeshift throne and watched the old hag haggle.

"Yeah, sorry, she's not really for sale."

"Twenty thousand." The woman's final bid caught the Bounsweet's attention; Ruben sat resolute, shaking his head. "You're driving a hard bargain young man, but I understand the situation." She sighed, frustration growing in her tone. She pulled out her chequebook. "I can offer you fifty thousand, but that's as high as I'll go. I'm sure someone of your background could benefit greatly from this sort of money." She huffed.

"Wait…who?" Ruben mused aloud, his brows furrowed and his fist clenched. Even on his bad ankle, Ruben sprang onto his feet and confronted the woman.

"I'm saying that someone of your…" She paused, finding the right words. "…of your disposition, diaspora simply doesn't stumble across opportunities like this very often, yet you choose to be stubborn." As she explained herself, Ruben could see her clutching her bag, holding her distance.

"Nah hold up, hold up…" He began, seeing nothing but red. "I've lived a quarter of your old ass life and I'm still here with you, so who ain't seen money? I bet my wage is twice whatever allowance your husband gives you to buy summer dresses on the weekend and I ain't even twenty yet so-" He paused. The room was silent. Everyone was watching. At a glance, he couldn't see a single ally amongst the crowd. "She's not for sale." He said simply before easing himself back into his seat.

"Disgusting attitude, typical." The woman mumbled as she stuffed her things in her bag and began away from the scene.

"Sweeee!" The angered voice of Lesca cut through the room. If not for Ruben's intercepting hand, she'd have been halfway to chasing the invasive old woman.

"Leave it."

"Swee!" The Bounsweet hissed again, this time directed Ruben himself. She continued to rant and ramble, only intensifying as her trainer did no more than roll his eyes at her.

"Look, I don't know how much of this you even understand but…there's not point. Dress an Ampharos in as much wool as you like but don't try to convince the Wooloo it's one of them." Ruben said with a sigh. "She liked you, so she'd got some taste at least." He smiled, attempting to pet his starter pokemon. Lesca was having none of it. She slapped his hand away with the leaf on her head. "Ow."

"Swee." The pokemon huffed, turning away from her trainer. She kicked her basket, knocking the Corviknight plush onto the floor. With a heavy sigh, Ruben leaned down to pick it up.

*THUNK*

A light piece of plastic bounced off of his hair and fell onto the ground. It was the little tiara he'd brought for Lesca.

"What? So because I get berated by one woman, you're not a princess anymore?" Ruben scoffed, but again the little pokemon turned away from him.

"That was awful what she said to you mate." An onlooker, who had watched the whole scene, said as he approached. Ruben gave a half-hearted smile in return. "I know it might be a bad time, but do you think I could maybe get tickets to the Wedgehurst v Motostoke derby next week?"

Ruben paused, unsure what the appropriate response even could be in this situation. He looked down at the Bounsweet who still refused to meet his gaze. She didn't care to bask in the attention right now. Ruben brushed his hair back and poked the little Tiara through with one arm, while scooping up his Bounsweet with the other. The pokemon could only side eye her trainer curiously.

"Sure mate, courtesy of Lesca the Bounsweet. Who do you want me to make it out to?" Ruben smiled, ready to take note.

Corey (Male, Blaze) - Flame Charge, Double Kick, Headbutt, Agility

A Sweet Thief

Just as Haleigh was going to make her way into the shop, a frantic looking young man with blond hair and wearing a flour stained baker's apron approached her.

"Y-you! Yes you, the lass with Scorbunny." Haleigh raised an eyebrow in response, wondering what he was fussing about. His irritated tone made her think she'd be scolded for loitering or something like that, but instead he said, "Hey, you're a Pokemon trainer, right?"

"Yeah, mate. Just graduated from the Academy, got my Pokemon and everythin'!" She pulled out her trainer's card, proudly flashed it with a wide grin on her face. "See? Certified Trainer!" The Scorbunny perched on her shoulder puffed out his chest and helpfully chimed in with another cry of "Scor!"

"Yesyesyes, congrats and all, sure you're the best there ever was but-" His rapidfire response was cut off with an exasperated sigh. "Look, I'm in a bind here. One of my mums is up my arse here and she told me to come and find someone to help us. Let me show you what I mean."

Haleigh followed the hasty young man into the bakery, the sign above it reading "Whitmere Bakery and Sweets". The event had piqued her curiosity wondering what a simple bakery could be up to that'd require help of a Pokemon trainer, especially one as cute and quaint looking as this one.

Once the young trainer got into the bakery, she could see that what must have been an orderly display of all sorts of baked goods was all in disarray, with signs knocked over and some of the pastries crumbled into crumbs and scattered all over the floor like a coating of dust. From a first impression, it appeared almost as if the place was ransacked in a burglary gone wrong.

Haleigh's eyes lit up as she realized that she could be potentially gearing up for a good ol' brawl. Not only that, but a brawl with her new partner! The trainer asked the young man with a rising tone of excitement in her voice, "Woah, did you guys get robbed or somethin'? Is that why ya need me?!"

"N-no, why do you sound so happy about that even if that were the case?"

Haleigh gave him a sheepish grin and scratched the top of her head, "Eheh, I got a bit of a thing for fightin', that's all. Really gets the blood pumping." Corey seemed to share in his trainer's enthusiasm, bouncing up and down excitedly on her shoulder on the balls of his heels and balling his front paws up into fists.

Seeing that the man did not share in her enthusiastic mood given the state of the store, she pivoted towards a more remorseful look and quickly added, "I-I'm sorry about your store though, really I am."

The blond disregarded the eager trainer's demeanor and sighed. "We...we're actually not quite sure why this has been going on. At first, I thought it was a burglary like you surmised, but nothing has been stolen unless you count half eaten pastries and there's been no sign of forced entry."

Haleigh raised an eyebrow and replied, "How odd. How long has this been going on?"

He looked up and stroked his chin. "Let's see...I think it started yesterday. What was going on then…?" He hummed in thought for a few moments before his eyes lit up for a second and snapped his fingers. "Ah, that's right, we got in that new shipment of Lava Cookies from Hoenn. It was sometime around then the weird stuff started happening. The doors kept opening and closing by themselves, stuff kept going missing and reappearing somewhere, all the shelves with all of our goods on it got knocked over this morning. It's almost as if-"

Their conversation was interrupted with a faint noise, a long, drawn out howl of some kind. It startled them and focused their attention on the source of the noise: somewhere from behind the counter where the ovens were. Corey was the first to react as he climbed his way off of Haleigh and sprinted towards it.

Haleigh and the young man ran over to meet up with the Scorbunny to see what the commotion was all about. They ran past the clutter of the wrecked bakery and jumped over the front counters to get to the back more quickly. When they all got to the back of the bakery, what they encountered explained everything. Standing a mere 2 feet tall on the floor, munching on a pastry was a ghost Pokemon.

"Woah!" The purple haired trainer quickly whipped out her Pokedex and a mechanical voice informed her of who the little scoundrel was.

"Corsola, the Coral Pokemon. In Galar, sudden climate change wiped out this ancient kind of Corsola. This Pokémon absorbs others' life-force through its branches."

"Alright little fella, your pastry snatching days are over!" Corey assumed his position besides his trainer and stood at the ready, ready to take orders.

The Corsola squinted its eyes and tried its best to look intimidating (which was not very effective despite its status as a ghost Pokemon due to its diminutive stature), gearing up for an attack of its own.

Haleigh took charge and commanded her Scorbunny. "Corey, use Ember! Make it count."

"E-Ember? Are you mad?! You'll burn this place down!"

"It's the only way I can land a hit on 'em, I can't just attack a bloody ghost with-"

The Corsola took their bickering as an opportunity to high tail it out of the bakery. It levitated off the ground and started floating away from them, a pastry still sticking out of its mouth.

"Oh no you don't!" Haleigh took off bolting after the ghost Pokemon, practically ramming the door open in her haste and leaving the bewildered shopkeeper behind. Luckily for her, the Corsola proved to not be very fast as its ability to phase through the door rather than having to physically open it saved only a few seconds.

Corey and Haleigh burst out from the bakery onto the streets, a small crowd of people moving out of their way as they remained hot on the Corsola's trail.

In between pants, Haleigh told her Pokemon partner, "Well I suppose...we did our job, yeah? But y'know what...maybe…"

Haleigh quickly shuffled through her bag to fish out a red and white Pokeball. She held it tight and closed one of her eyes to get a better view of her target. She had to wait for just the right moment and then-

Got it! She put her right arm behind her to gain momentum for her throw and let go, letting the ball arc through the air towards the still fleeing Corsola. The ball opened up and emitted red rays of energy, ensnaring the Corsola in it and sucking it in until it dematerialized into the ball.
Haleigh waited by the Pokeball to catch her breath and watched anxiously as the ball jiggled back and forth. After a few agonizing seconds, the wiggling stopped and the Pokeball's center button stopped glowing

Grinning widely, Haleigh said to Corey, "So, I guess that's one way of ending our little chase, huh? Let's go make a proper introduction this time." The trainer scooped up the Pokeball and walked back towards the grocery, eager to show the shopkeeper her success not only with ridding him of their problem, but also of acquiring yet another partner in her journey.

Chapter 1-3: Division
Featuring...
Spoiler:

After Clovis took Cortex and his newly acquired Hoothoot to the Pokemon Center, he tended to his own wounds while they were being treated.

"Hrnngh… some part of me regrets catching that Hoothoot in the first place. However, a genius can work around any pr- OW, owowow… any problem," he sulked to himself in silence. Luckily, after he left his grandfather's study to pursue his own academic goals, his grandfather was generous in being sure Clovis was fully prepared. A med kit, extra money of his own, camping gear, and the tutelage he needed to survive on his own.

For reasons.

His grandfather's words echoed through his mind, as he finished cleaning off any dirt on his person. "Clovis, remember this well. Try not to make enemies of everyone around you, please?" Clovis scoffed. His eyebrow twitched in annoyance. "Why not? Everyone is an idiot, outside of geniuses… they don't know what they want." Memories began to course through his skull, his free hand gripping the wadded up tissues of blood. "Eugh, enough of this. I need to freshen up and continue. I have a journey to continue."

After standing up and washing his hands, splashing water on his face and taking a long look in the mirror… a soft voice rang out. "Clovis? Your Pokemon have cleared their check-up and are back in good condition." With a sigh of relief, Clovis left the waiting area. Nurse Joy (of this center) held a tray that was holding his two Pokeballs. Clovis merely bowed a bit from the wait, and walked away. "Young man? May I give you some advice?" "...." He stopped, awkwardly turning. "Y-Yes?" A small frown appeared on the young nurse's face, a clear look of concern. "Your Hoothoot was quite aggressive at first, before I could calm it down. Try to make a good first impression as it's trainer. Okay?" He only gave a small nod, and walked out the front doors. "Oh, my… another troubled trainer."

~~~
"Cortex, come out," called Clovis, as the Blipbug beamed outward, forming on his shoulder. Blipbug cooed, and patted his small nub hand on Clovis' head, able to hear is inner owies. "It's fine, we need to head to the station. Everyone else is ahead of us, and I don't like being behind those not worthier than myself. Our intellect WILL win over." Clovis stepped toward the station with haste. Cortex simply looked over at Clovis' face, before he continued observing his surroundings.
Finally. They managed to make it to the station without getting sidetracked by thieves or kleptomaniac birds. The problem? It seems the train had been delayed due to the Munchlax and the aforementioned thief holding up departures. Fantastic. Melody found a seat in the far corner of the station and sat down. Nightshot phased through her bag and flew in a circle around her lap before settling in and closing his eyes.
Moments pass in peaceful silence as Melody taps away at her phone.
Give me a cool name for a Rookidee. She texts. Seconds pass before a reply comes in.
Rook.
It's not going to be a rook forever.
Knight.
I regret ever talking to you ever.
Bishop?
… I kind of like that one.
She takes out her Pokedex and scans the newly caught Rookidee's Pokeball, registering it under the name Bishop. She also takes the time to scan the Thief ™ she was given earlier and teach that to the aforementioned bird.
Well, that was a nice way to kill three minutes. Now what? Melody leans her head back against the wall and begins scanning the area-- and locks eyes with a familiar face. Oh… Clovis. She'll… give him a nod of acknowledgement.
Slowly walking in, Clovis caught eyes with… some girl he went to class with at the academy. But, because he was so absorbed in his studies… he knew nothing of his classmates. Except the ones that tried to bully him. He notices that she gives him a nod, but he merely scoffs, and sits a ways away from the girl.
He sits in one of the chairs in the station, and pulls out a little, black book. Hesitantly, he begins writing the information he gathers, as he uses his Pokedex to scan the Pokeball that is containing Hoothoot. Still unsure of this new capture, he decides not to nickname the Owl Pokemon. Still unsure, Clovis writes down only basic information in pencil. All this time, Cortex has observed both Clovis and the young girl that acknowledged his trainer. But, deemed her someone not to interact with.
Melody responds to the scoff with narrowed eyes. Same old Clovis. No, they didn't interact much… if ever. He was there a lot, sure, but his nose was stuffed in a book and he never said much. What he did say was conceded garbage about his own intellect. That little poindexter bug is the perfect Pokemon for him. Melody reaches for her satchel and starts to dig for her earbuds. "Better hope a drought starts soon. With that nose of his shoved in the air so high, he'll drown if it rains." She mumbles… maybe not as quietly as she meant to.
With that inadvertently audible quip, Clovis eyebrow twitched in annoyance. Cortex, however, shuddered at the amount of rage he could feel from his trainer. But at the same time, began to glare at the young woman trainer. Clovis noticed this, and… felt a bit calmer at seeing his partner share his feelings. In fact, it managed to make a small grin appear on his face. "Relax, Cortex. Anyone without talent will always sneer at those above them. It's the natural interaction for geniuses," he muttered aloud, as he stroked the Blipbug's head with a free hand. His eyes, violet and sharp, rolled over to the young woman. "Hmm… clearly, an underclassman. Probably a typical, strifeful slacker that looked to pick fights." He thought this to himself, glaring at her for a moment, before putting away his little black book with a smug look on his face.
Oh wow. He's joking, right? This is an act? A gimmick? Is he trying to make a name for himself by being 'the smart trainer'? Melody cuts her eyes to the glaring duo and responds with the most obvious eye-roll she can manage. "Insecure. Adjective. Not confident or assured; uncertain and anxious. Commonly boast to make themselves seem bigger than they feel." She says as she continues to go through her bag. Of course those things would fall to the bottom. Nightshot opens an eye and slowly lifts his head. Is Melody talking to him? No, it doesn't look like it. Is she talking to… the person and the angry bug? The tiny ghost dragon returns the glare and gives a very tiny, hardly intimidating in the least, growl.
"Did you hear that, Cortex?" Clovis says to Cortex, a snarky tone in his voice. "I think she's practicing to be the first human dictionary. How precious. Not only that, but the squeak toy accompanying her." Clovis and Cortex both snark at the pair, but not before her face finally begins to ring some bells in Clovis' mind. "Oh, wait… yes, I remember. She was one of the rare individuals that could keep up with me in the classroom. However… let's see if she can keep up in battle." Clovis clears his throat, and says aloud, "Although… I suppose if anyone could, it would be a fellow student that could manage grades similar to my own. But, maybe you'd be more interested in a battle," he says nonchalantly while petting his Blipbug.
"Talking to me through your Pokemon is also a sign of insecurity." Melody states in the least interested tone she can muster. If he sees how badly she wants to pick up this chair and beat him with it, he'll be even more smug-- if that's possible. She can only imagine there's only so smug a person can get before they turn into a black hole. However, her own expression becomes significantly less board when he mentions battle. She now gives a small grin and lifts Nightshot into her arms so that she can stand without dumping him on the ground. "Clovis is going to take his nose out of his notebook long enough to have a fight? Hell yeah I'm interested."
"Yes, yes, I can spare some time from learning to engage in a battle. It's only fitting that a genius begins his journey battling with someone of… similar standing." Clovis struggled with that last bit, but felt she was owed that much. He rose from the seat with vigor, Cortex standing tall. "I happen to have two Pokemon. Yourself?"
Ya know, Clovis would probably be something closely related to likable if his every other sentence didn't begin with a genius such as myself… As he is now… at least he should be fun to battle. All that time with his books and his notes mean he's got to know a thing or two about how to battle. Nightshot slowly floats out of Melody's arms so she can grab Bishop's Pokeball from her belt loop. "I've also got two." Admittedly… she wasn't planning on using her Doom Noodle in battle yet, but he looks incredibly determined to square off against that little bug.
"Fine then, two on two. Clearly, a referee won't be necessary… or available," Clovis looked around, clearly no one around looking qualified to act as referee. Shaking his head, he turned back to Melody. "Well, it's not quite official, but… Occipt, I choose you." Clovis would come to regret this decision. As the pokeball was thrown, releasing the Owl Pokemon….
peck, peck, peck, peck
"OWOWOWOW, STOP, I NEED YOU TO BATTLE!" Clovis cried, as Hoothoot began to peck his temple, furiously. "Cortex, do something!" Clovis flailed his hands, trying to stop the Hoothoot himself to no avail. "RrrrrrRRR!" Cortex cooed loudly, surprising both Clovis and Hoothoot. The latter of which, having a modicum of respect for being able to beat it so easily. You know, despite Hoothoot focusing most of its aggression on Clovis. Hoothoot nodded at Cortex, and glared at Clovis accusingly, before flying out before Melody. It hooted passive-aggresively, before Cortex sighed. "Listen, this is our first battle. I know this is much short notice, but I… I see a great potential in you," Clovis pleaded. Hoothoot turned, giving the stink eye. Almost as if it's saying, "Don't screw this up," with its expression.
That… happened. While Melody won't admit it, she does feel the slightest bit of relief that her opponent is using a Pokemon he's never battled with before. That will make things considerably more even. "Well, you can't say he's not… passionate?" She half asks, half states before tossing her Pokeball into the air. A burst of white light takes to the air before forming into the shape of another bird. "I've already seen what you can do. Now let's see how we do together."
The Rookidee turns to Melody and then looks at its opponent. The rage in the HootHoot's eyes seems to fuel the once-flock leader's excitement for battle. Its eyes fall back to Melody and it gives a very determined chirp.
"Alright, Bishop! Use Hone Claws!"
"Occipt, use Growl!"
He's not going to let Rookidee power up. If she tries to Hone Claws again, he'll growl again and cancel out the power boost. That's just fine, she got what she needed. Status lowering moves don't bring down the power of her next move. "Now, use Power Trip!"
Bishop's body pulses with a dark energy, once for the boosted attack and once for the boosted accuracy. The little bird then quickly flies towards its opponent, prepared to slam into the HootHoot's body.
Damnit, I have no counter… Power Trip is a very potent attack…. Clovis thought this to himself, his teeth clenched and his brow furrowed in frustration. Occipt, unfortunately, takes the hit. It hoots in pain, as the Rookidee slams into the Owl Pokemon. Occipt slides along the floor, before it hopped angrily, hooting at Clovis angrily. But, Clovis knew Hoothoot had one move it could use to possibly get the advantage. "Occipt, I know a way we can beat them at their own game! Used Echoed Voice!"
"Hoo-HOOT!" The sound of the hooting call rang out in the station, visible sound waves began to fly towards the Rookidee.
That's not a bad plan at all: Echoed Voice's growing power puts them on a time limit. If they take the time to Hone Claws again, that will give HootHoot time to power up too. They have to strike fast and they have to strike now. "Fly up! Then fly through them and use Power Trip again!"
Bishop doesn't know what his new trainer's plan is, but as it ends in him attacking the owl again, he's happy to comply. The small bird flies up as far as he can before flying through the sound waves. His eyes narrow in pain as he takes damage from the harsh waves, but he remains determined, following the sound waves directly to their creator and preparing for a Power-Trip-fueled assault. If Melody's plan worked, getting the sound waves to expand as much as possible would weaken the impact.
"Occipt, use Echoed Voice again!" And again, the Owl hooted loudly, it's power a little bit stronger. The sound waves, a little bit larger.
-- Never mind. Go big or go home. "Fly around it and use Hone Claws!"
Bishop practically falls to the floor in order to avoid the onslaught of Echoed Voices, its claws glowing as it falls. Mere inches before hitting the ground, it spreads its wings and begins to fly upward once more.
"When you get behind it, use Power Trip!"
"Occipt, use Echoed Voice again!"
If any glass shatters… she's not paying for it. "Go, now!"
Bishop's body pulses with two more bursts of darkness as he flies through the strengthened Hyper Voices, which manage to blow him back once before he dive bombs the owl at a different angle. A massive amount of power smashes into the owl from above.
"HOOOOOOO-HOoooot... Hoo," Occipt couldn't stand after the last attack. Clovis stood, awestruck. "N-no! Occipt, return!" Cortex looked in worry at Clovis, seeing his left eye twitch. "W-Well… fine. Little rapscallion was insubordinate anyway. Cortex, go." Without hesitation, Cortex slid off of his trainer, and slunk up before the Rookidee, unsure how much damage he'd have to address before victory.
"Bishop, return." Melody calls the hyper-powered bird back to its Pokeball. It was a close call-- another Echoed Voice likely would have been it for Bishop.
She tucks the ball onto her belt and gives an eager grin to her partner noodle. "Ready?"
"Py!"
"Let''s go, Nightshot!"
"Cortex, go and use Struggle Bug!" Green streaks of energy shot forth from the Blipbug's noggin, surging towards the Dreepy.
"Nightshot, Quick Attack!"
The small dragon uses the speed boost to zip away from the last of the green streaks after taking the first few head on. The ghostly creature crashes into the bug quickly.
"RRRRRrrrrr!" Cortex flew, and hit the wall behind Clovis. "Cortex!" Clovis yelled in panic, seeing his partner take such a strong hit. However, the distance between Cortex and the Dreepy gave Clovis an idea. "Cortex, use Struggle Bug right where you are! Then, use Recover!"
And again, several streams of green light flew at the Dreepy. Clovis could only guess he had a small chance this desperate plan would work, but he was low on options. And, he knew it. Cortex sat weakly, trying to recover from the previous critical hit.
Damn it. Recover is going to be a problem-- but she might just have a counter. "Night shot, use Infestation!"
The tiny dragon flinches in pain as the attack hits its mark, but he's fortunate to be resistant to the bug's move. Once the green energy clears, the Dreepy summons a cluster of black, fluttering energy. What are those things anyway? Teeny tiny ghost bugs? Eh, doesn't matter. The tiny black dots fly forward and swarm the recovering bug, slowly picking away at whatever energy he was able to gain back. "Now, get closer and use Dragon Tail!"
Nightshot seems uncertain that he can make it across the room before the bug recovers, but with a determined stare he zips towards the glowing bug, his tail glowing a bright blue. In a matter of seconds, he's inches away from Cortex. He spins in the air to gain momentum before slamming his tail into the Blipbug's side.
Clovis' face became a face of utter shock. It was all like slow motion to him. From the moment Cortex attacked with Struggle Bug, Clovis could see everything happen before it even happen in his mind's eye. It was impossible, there was no way he could win. From the newly acquired Hoothoot, to his partner already being weaker than his opponent.
"RRRRRR!"
Cortex, already laying limp from trying to recover, was flung again to the corner of the station. He cried out from the pain, as he scraped against the ground upon impact. Panic rose in Clovis. N-No… NO! He ran up to Cortex in a panicked expression, scooping him up in his arms.
He rose, composed himself, and turned to Melody. A nasty look in his eye, as he held Cortex like a prized possession. "Don't get a swelled head about this, my Pokemon just didn't take you seriously. And rightly so, but we'll battle again." Clovis, then, stormed out towards the Pokemon center.
Didn't take her seriously, huh? Sounds like the words of a guy who can't admit he lost-- Oh, right, this is Clovis. Rather than glare at his arrogance, she gives a sly smirk and rests her hand on her hip. "Any time, Clovis."
As he leaves, Nightshot zips back to Melody, who raises her hand for the tiny dragon to tap with his nubbed hands. "You did great out there, little dude."
"Py py!" He chimes excitedly.
Melody pauses. Today Nightshot has gone on the offense to protect her more than once, and he just kicked some major bug ass. "... I guess I gotta start letting you fight some battles, huh?"
The Dreepy sways back and forth contently before giving a bob of his head.
"I guess I can let you do that." She smiles as she turns to the door Clovis had vanished from. "... I'm thinking we wait until he's gone to go to the center."
~~~

Clovis sat in silence, in the waiting area. The warmth of Cortex still lingered in his arms when he hurriedly rushed him to the Pokemon Center. He thought about what happened, how it happened, why it happened….

"Young man," the familiar, soft voice called. Slowly, he stood. He walked up to the counter, before looking up to a concerned Nurse Joy. "Please give your Pokemon at least a good night's rest. Not just for their health, but for their sake." A Chansey placed the tray with the lone Pokeball and Cortex, coiled up in itself and sleeping. "Hello, Cortex. Come on, let's do some reading," Clovis said with a softer tone than usual. He lowered his arm to him, allowing Cortex to climb up to his shoulder.

"Thank you, Nurse Joy," muttered Clovis, before taking the remaining Pokeball. But, instead of going back to the station, or even sitting at a bench… Clovis walked down to Route 2, a few feet before the tall grass could be seen.

pop

A blue light flew from the Pokeball, and Hoothoot appeared on the ground. It looked up in confusion, hooting questioningly. "You're out of here," Clovis coldy asserted at the Owl Pokemon, glaring down at him. Cortex looked on in worry, trying to make Clovis reconsider his actions. But, before Clovis paid mind to his partner, Hoothoot simply turned and flew off. "Don't worry, Cortex. We'll find more suitable Pokemon down the line." Clovis, shoving his hands in his pockets, walked back towards Wedgehurst, with Cortex looking back at the now distant Hoothoot. Clovis found a bench that overlooked the station, and sullenly sat down.

In his bitterness, he decided to just sit near the station and listen for the news of the tracks. Wordlessly, he pulled out a book about a Galarian fiction and began to silently read, with Cortex curled in his lap and reading with him.

Rosa Valdés // 17

CHAPTER 1.3 - Names and Nightmares!

"Stop it. Stop it…" the girl whimpered, shivering in her sleep. Her head rested soundly on the Munchlax's stomach. The rhythmic breathing of the Pokemon caused its gut to rise and fall in such a way that Rosa had been slowly rocked to sleep under the shade of a tree.

The nightmares still plagued her, as they had for many years. For much of that time, she'd had Simon to wake her from the terror and to comfort her, but now… she was alone. The feelings of her waking self held strong influence over these dreams she was a hostage to. And now, with only the comfort of her Pokemon, she felt alone and scared of what lay ahead. It was a feeling she'd felt only a few other times in her life, and it was oft times relived though these very same nightmares.

Wyatt was keen to its relatively new master's emotional state and attempted to curl up closer to the girl. The Whismur held many of its own fears, but it had to be strong. Realizing just how weak Rosa was, compared to the other trainer it had recently met, it knew that it couldn't be a slave to its fears forever. Wyatt needed to get stronger, he needed to protect her. The Pokemon folded back its ears and breathed in deeply, struggling as hard as it could to ease its own shivering.

This'll be you and daddy's little secret. Okay, Rosa?

Her eyes shot open as the chilling voice of her late father caused her entire body to tingle. Tears had started to stream down her face before she'd even opened them, and the Munchlax was struggling to reach the streams with both its tongue and its stumpy arms.

"Crap." She whispered to herself,realizing she'd fallen asleep. Her notebook lay open beside her on Jasper's entry. Having fallen asleep unexpectedly, the page was free of any new additions. She pulled the sleeve of her dress up to her eyes and rubbed them dry before closing the book. "Guess I'll have to work more on that when I'm not so worn out..."

She placed the book on her bag and stood up to stretch. She swung her body from side to side, popping her back in several places before letting out a long, wide-mouthed yawn.

"Mmmmunch!" The Pokemon copied Rosa's movements with its own massive stretch and a cry before scratching at its stomach. It gazed around, still drowsy from its rest. "Munch?"

Yup. She was adorable. Rosa smiled as she squatted down in front of the Munchlax that she'd obtained from Jasper. "Hello there, friend. I guess we both needed that little nap, huh?"

"Munch!" The Munchlax rubbed its stomach and nodded in agreement. The Pokemon sniffed the air, presumably searching for something to eat as was its nature.

"Well, now that we're rested, I suppose I should give you a name since you're joining our party. Thinking back on it now, Wyatt is only really fitting for Whismur, but what about when it evolves? Hmm, maybe I should give this a little more thought going forward."

"Whis?" The Whismur looked up at her from its safety veil between her legs.

Rosa absentmindedly began to chew on her fingernail as she considered a long list of names for her new partner. "Zee? No. Dee? No. Hmm…"

As she was lost in thought, the Munchlax had grown tired of waiting for her trainer to give her an order, and instead decided to rummage around in the girl's bag. "Munch?" The Pokemon questioned as it pulled out and tossed aside various shapes and sizes of writing utensils. "Munch, munch." The Pokemon mused, shaking its head as it tossed aside a dress and a change of shoes. "Muuuunch." The Pokemon sighed, defeated in its search as it fell on its bottom.

"Hey now," Rosa scolded, finally free from her daze. The girl started picking up the various items that had been strewn about as she returned to her new Pokemon. "It's not nice to go through a lady's things you know? How would you like it if I started frisking you to see what you had on you?"

The Pokemon's eyes met its trainers as it took in the scolding. The Munchlax scratched at its stomach and then took a quick look around before standing up. "Munch munch, munch… munchlax." The Pokemon scratched its head as it produced an apple that it had hidden in its cheek. "Munch." The Pokemon averted its gaze as it held the item out towards its trainer.

Rosa stared at the apple for a moment before recalling one of the entries on her dex about the Pokemon. 'It stores food beneath its fur. It might share just one bite, but only if it really trusts you.' She smiled, happily taking the apple from the Pokemon. "Oh, how sweet of you," she said as she went to take a bite.

The Pokemon's eyes and mouth widened as the girl took a hearty bite out of the apple and then quickly spit it on the ground at her feet. "M-M-Muuunch?" The Pokemon scrambled to pick up the chunk of apple that had been refused. Tears welled up in the Pokemon's eyes as it slowly put the piece into its own mouth and swallowed it. "Munch… Munch…"

Rosa wiped at her face and scraped her tongue against her teeth. The apple was tasteless, but the feeling it had as she chewed it was downright repulsive. She hadn't even noticed the look of pain in the Munchlax's eyes as she spit it out, as her own eyes were fixed on the spot where she'd just taken a chomp out of. "W-what?" She whispered to herself as the apple slowly regenerated itself. "This is… what? I'm so confused."

Rosa scratched at her head and then gave the apple back to the Munchlax who was still staring, teary-eyed at the spot where the chunk had fallen. The Pokemon looked up at her and slowly took the apple back, placing it in its mouth. The Munchlax waddled over to the edge of the lake and sat down, staring at its own reflection in the gently rippling water.

Rosa sighed and looked around. There was supposed to be some sort of competition going on today for fishing Magikarp. Luckily, they'd found a spot that the eccentrics hadn't made it around to yet, so things were relatively quiet. The tree that they'd been resting under had some low-hanging branches. Maybe…

Don't forget! The chilling voice of her father sent a shiver down her spine once more, causing a full body spasm. As a Pokemon Ranger, you've got to expect everything! You won't always be able to have access to a fishing rod, and the best Rangers out there don't even need balls to get Pokemon to join forces with them! Make use of what you've got, and do whatever it takes!

The memory was warm in her mind, but the taste it left in her mouth to think of her father was foul. She shook her head vigorously. "No. No, no, no. You know better than that… you know what he was really like. He doesn't deserve to have any fond memories inside you." She clenched her fist, shaking out of frustration as tears began to well up in her eyes once more. "Fuck!" she cursed under her breath as she fixed her gaze on the tree ahead of her. "Just do whatever it takes!" she whispered, in an angry but mocking tone.

Rosa jumped up, grabbing one of the lower branches of the tree and throwing her full body weight onto it. The branch quickly snapped off, and she trudged over to the Munchlax who was still staring into the lake. She tossed the branch down beside the Pokemon and cleared her throat. "Ezra. That'll be your name."

The Pokemon slowly looked over at the stick and then up at her. Her eyes were wet again. The Munchlax looked around, confused, before pointing at itself. "Munch?"

Rosa nodded her head. "Ezra. That's what I'll call you from now on. Now, since you're part of our team, I'll have to find a way to feed you, right?"

Ezra quickly stumbled to its feet and then nodded its head vigorously, several times. "Munch. Munch, munch munch lax."

Rosa smiled. "Good. Then you'll need to make yourself useful as well. See that stick? Sharpen it as good as you can in the next couple of minutes while I change out of my dress. It's time to go fishing."

- - - - - -

After ensuring that nobody was around, Rosa had taken refuge behind the nearby tree and stripped herself of her dress. In the time it had taken for Ezra to whittle down the branch into something usable, the girl had managed to apply some bindings across her chest. The boyshorts she wore beneath her dress would do well enough for a swim bottom, though it would take a little time to dry out once they were soaked. She'd not thought to bring any type of swimsuit with her though, so it would just have to do for the time being. That fishing rod would surely find some use in her journey, so the immediate inconvenience was worth it.

"Alright. Let's do this." Rosa did some quickly stretches as she walked back over to Ezra. The Pokemon lifted the thinned stick to its master, who quickly took it. "Good. Good. This will do finely." Rosa did one final look around, ensuring that nobody was around before stepping off into the water. "Cold! Cold!" She bobbed slightly out of the water as she kicked vigorously at the sudden shock. "Oh yeah, that's chilly. Suck it up, you're wrong. It's not cold, it's just the opposite of warm. Yeah, just not entirely warm. That's good."

The girl attempted to psych herself up as her entire body shivered. It had been… a minute, since she'd dove into a body of water larger than a bathtub. The shock was extreme, and drudged up even more memories that she'd wished were suppressed.

Fifty-five, fifty-six, fifty-seven, fifty- eight… You did it! The image of her father picking her up out of the bathtub as a young girl filled her mind. The vomiting sensation returned, exasperated by the chill of the water.

"Get out of my damn head." She growled as she took a deep breath and dove beneath the water's surface.

There were Pokemon all around her; mostly Magikarp, but some others like Lotad and Chewtle were scattered about as well. The Pokemon weren't what she was looking for right this second though. She had to go deeper.

Three whole minutes! Wow, my little girl has the makings of a Ranger yet!

Rosa winced in pain as the memories continued to bombard her. She'd only just begun her adventure, and already… she had to get this under control, but her main focus right this minute was getting to the bottom of this lake.

Daddy's so proud of his little girl.

Rosa continued to kick vigorously as the light began to fade away above her. The water here was getting colder, and only a few rays of light still reflected off of the gleaming targets of the lakebed.

I love you, Rosa.

She swallowed hard as she bumped into the lake bottom. She ran her hands quickly across the ground as she searched for her targets. After a few seconds of flipping rocks and digging out holes in the sand with her fingers, she felt it. A pincer clamped around her index finger. It wasn't strong enough to make her wince, but the pain was noticeable enough. She quickly pulled the stick up and ran it down the length of her arm, pressing the pointed end through the creature that held her in its grip.

Daddy's got to go away for a little while now.

Rosa continued the same process of allowing herself to be pinched and then striking her attacker until the stick had six of the creatures lining its length. She'd managed to hold a count in her head, despite the painful memories that were repeating themselves in the back of her mind.

'Two forty-two, two forty-three, two forty-four… yeah, I'll be safe.'

Don't forget, mommy can't find out. This'll be you and daddy's little secret. Okay, Rosa?

Rosa gasped, doubling over. Not that memory. Not again. In her panic, she'd accidentally inhaled a small amount of water. She'd started to choke, and had completely lost count. She screamed at the water around her as she kicked off from the lake's bottom, propelling herself towards the surface.

Don't forget, mommy can't find out. This'll be you and daddy's little secret. Okay, Rosa?

She kicked harder and harder as she winced, thinking about any little thing she could to drown out the thoughts that were on repeat in her head.

Don't forget, mommy can't find out. This'll be you and daddy's little secret. Okay, Rosa?

She screamed again, emptying her lungs completely of what little oxygen was left. The surface of the water was just within reach now, but her mind was slowly going blank.

Don't forget, daddy loves you.

Rosa burst forth from the surface of the water and coughed harshly, clearing her lungs of the miniscule amount of water which had made its way in. "Aaaah!" She screamed, trailing off into a sob as her voice grew hoarse. She buried her face beneath the water, curling up into a fetal position before screaming into the lake once more.

Her whole body was shaking, so she had barely even noticed the large splash that had come from someone jumping into the water nearby. The waves rocked her body, and when the strong arm of someone wrapped itself beneath her own, she didn't even attempt to fight it.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry."

The diver carried her to the water's edge and then helped her up out of the lake. Her mind was a mess, and her whole body was shaking from a number of different factors.

"Don't worry about it. After all, what else am I here for?"

The man's voice was familiar to her. She shakily lifted her head to allow her eyes to meet his gaze. "S-Simon?"

The childhood friend gave a pleasant half-smile as he kneeled down in front of her. "Sorry I took so long to get here. I saw you dive off from a little ways away and just wanted to make sure you were alright. It has been a while since you've… anyways, just what did you think you were going to accomplish with a stick full of baby crabs?"

She looked at the stick she'd used to impale the six crustaceans. Her eyes were heavier than before - it seemed that she'd really overexerted herself today. "I wanted to get the fishing rod… crabs are one of Magikarp's favorite foods. I remember my dad-" she shook her head. "I read in a book back when I visited the Lake of Rage that fishermen had started using live crabs to capture bigger and stronger Magikarp. I thought it might give me an advantage."

Simon sighed and then pried the stick from her hands. "Don't be afraid to ask for help sometimes. I'm sure if you'd just asked, they would have lent you a rod and sold you some bait."

Rosa nodded her head. Of course they would have, but how would she have been able to afford it? After that debacle with the Munchlax swarm, she'd been left almost completely broke.

Simon placed his bag on the ground and rummaged around in it for a moment before producing a small tube that was roughly the size of his palm. "Lucky for you, I already completed this challenge. You've already done the hard part, I'll finish up here for you now."

Rosa smiled half-heartedly. He was a good friend, even if she still didn't know what went on in his head. "So," she started, trying her best to stay awake, "how'd you say you found me again?"

Simon extended the rod and placed one of the crabs on the hooked end before tossing it out into the water. "Well, like I said, I'd already been out this way and got a rod of my own. I wanted to get straight on the train, but it was blocked by some Munchlax." He side-eyed Ezra, who was looking at the impaled crabs with globs of drool dangling from her mouth. "So after that, I came out this way, got my rod, and doubled back. By that time, everything was cleared up and they were giving out tickets again. I didn't see you around, so I took the liberty of grabbing one for you and then came to give you the news about the train. That's when-"

Rosa's eyes had grown too heavy to stay awake. Wyatt had reclaimed his spot at her side, and before Simon could even finish his story, she'd already nodded off.
