lol no, poison was always one of the best defensive typings.

I never used Poison-types as much, likely due to the Butt Monkey status they were suffering, because they only had one type advantage and sadly that type (Grass) was already weak to a lot of stuff so people used Poison more for its defensive side. Introduction of Fairy helped Poison have a better offensive presence so it was good thinking.

Nope i never used poison types much. Though I do like to raise Crobats

When it comes to my thoughts about Poison types, I have considered them to be the Butt Monkey of the Pokemon types. Six gens and it still has not had a Legendary Pokemon.

[PokeCommunity.com] Pure Poison types-Worthless before the boost?

Well hello tharrr xD

Pure or not, they aren't useless as you think. During Generation I Poison-type moves were actually affecting against two types, namely the Bug-type and Grass-type. From Generation II to V, only Grass-types were really harmed by Poison.

But I'd like to remind you, in case you've forgotten, types weren't as diverse as we see nowadays. Types were assigned with different roles, for example Psychic and Ice types were masters of the Special stats, Rock-types (and later joined by Steel-types) are strong on the defensive side, Normal-types the multi-talented types of all are capable of learning different types of moves and so-on. Naturally Poison-type were assigned with a role -- they are perfect when it comes to stalling and inflicting opponents with status problems.

Sun makes a great point in his post there, in the earlier days the types were way more specialized towards a certain stat but thanks to evolution in mechanics and the physical/special split of 4th Gen, every type has had new Pokemon taking a different direction than what you'd usually expect for said type.

Plus, Poison actually had another advantage in 1st Gen with the aforementioned Bug-type but then that got changed to neutral. 6th Gen does at least now compensate for that loss with the introduction of Fairy-types.

Even though you'd rarely be able to score a super effective hit with poison before gen 6, I never thought if it as underpowered. As previously stated, poison is quite strong defensively. Plus who needs super effective damage when you can just poison your enemies and try to outlast 'em?

I still must admit I rarely use Pure Pokemon typed Pokemon though. But that more because I think there aren't any decent Pure poison typed Pokemon out there, save Weezing and Muk.

i always found poison to be good bulk if i was tired of using the usual bulk. Muk and Weezing can usually take a few hard hits from my experience. before gen 6 one of my favorite types to use against a poison type was another poison type.

I've personally always found them to be pretty underwhelming before gen 6. There just wasn't a whole lot that the type had going for it :(

This is true, but I can't say I fully agree that this is a unique role that Poison types particularly excelled at over other Pokemon prior to Gen 6. After all, almost every Pokemon in the game that can learn moves through TM can learn Toxic--something that I've never thought made any sense logically, and just served to make the Poison type even more redundant :c

There are other non-Poison types that can learn Status moves, but please don't forget the fact that Poison-types are able to learn different kinds of moves, they are more than a mere toxin type. On the statistic side, the Poison-type is the only type that can completely pull a sleeve of nasty tricks inflict confusion, sleep, paralysis and definitely more. {XD} That being said, the likes of Hypno aren't forgotten. :)
