Shooter Games

I'm not really into shooters, if only because the majority of FPS fall into one of two categories: war simulator or futuristic, and I'm sick to death of both of them. When it comes to series like Call of Duty, when you've played one of them, you've pretty much played all of them; they offer little in the way of variety, and the setting never really appealed to me in the first place. They're fantastic for online multiplayer, but not much else really.

That said, I'm a huge fan of games like Borderlands, Timesplitters and Bioshock, which add a little twist to things in the form of powers, etc. It's much more satisfying killing things with guns if you've got the opportunity to blow them up with fireballs, freeze and shatter them, deploy turrets, etc etc. I was very attached to the Turok game as well for this reason. For me, a shooter needs to have a little more creativity and variety than the likes of Halo and Call of Duty have for me to be interested in it.

I've played a fair few third-person shooters, like Mass Effect and Resident Evil 4/5, but the shooting aspect isn't the primary focus of the game, so I'm not sure if they'd count or not. xD

I don't think you should knock Halo on a creativity standpoint. The plot, weapon selection, enemy variety, and vast worlds are all really creative in their own ways.

The first two I'd agree with you, but beyond that? Honestly, all I've really enjoyed is the multiplayer, and that was more due to the company than it was the game itself. In a genre I'm not really interested in to begin with, it just doesn't have enough that makes it stand out to interest me. Like a lot of series, it feels like it's rehashing itself for the sake of sales now, at least to me. It's just not my thing, which is part of the reason I don't look on it favourably, I'll admit. But I don't think that's the only reason.

...although the multiplayer does continue to be fantastic, and I think in the FPS genre these days that's the main thing people look for.

Tribes is the only shooter series I have a true appreciation for, and remains the only series of any genre that I could have an interest in playing competitively.

Does World of Tanks count as a shooter? It's hardly a tank sim with its 'arcade' gameplay, but I can hardly stop playing it, so if it is a shooter, then yeah. I never before thought a shooter in which having a 20 second reload is normal would really work, but the KV-2 is insanely fun.

I don't get it either. Complaints about campers are likely just nonsense — people do it in WoT and that game has spotting mechanics that reward stealthy gameplay! Patience is a major component of gameplay at higher tiers, so of course the noob in the T34 (by which I mean the American tank, not the Soviet one; the more you know!) will complain when he dies in the first five minutes after blundering out in front of invisible enemies.

I keep meaning the give WOT a go sometime. Also I imagine on that if your using a tank destroyer like a Hertzer or any other Jagdpanzer Camping is the only way to play effectively.

I enjoyed each and every COD title. However, my favorite FPS games has to be the Metro series. Those were terrifyingly good.

In theory. German TDs are pretty much exemplars of the traditional role, but with so many vehicles in the game the lines can be blurred. A good share of American and British TDs are mobile and have fully-rotating turrets, allowing them to take on the role of medium tanks if a situation demands. In any case, knowing where to wait for how long are important skills in WoT.

I do play shooters every once in a while. My favorite first person shooter would have to be F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon, my favorite third person shooter would have to be Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for the PS2, and my favorite shooter series would be the Max Payne series.

Other shooters that I enjoyed would be Far Cry 3 (I need to play the other Far Cry games), the Payday series, Left 4 Dead, and The House of the Dead: Overkill.

Wow, not a single mention of Planetside?

I'm not really a player of shooters but there are a small number that are rather good. Planetside 2, the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2, Battlezone 2 (not quite the genera?), and of course a shameless plug for GoldenEye on N64.

As much as I don't like most popular shooters, I think the hate is misplaced. COD, Battlefield and the like are all really good games, it's just that they tend to generate a disturbingly young audience, frustrate the crap out of people sometimes due to hyperspeed pacing, and have trouble keeping their franchises fresh. For instance, COD 4 was pretty revolutionary and well received by many, but as the franchise progresses the hatedom continues to grow.

Nowadays, there are plenty of options to the "mainstream" shooters. Personally I'm a fan of the ARMA series, which happens to be slow as hell yet extremely tense and tactical. I don't think there's a single person who plays it and wouldn't admit it's not for everybody, but that mentality also creates a great community. I also have to give a shout-out to my childhood contained in a disc, Timesplitters. Play it for a few minutes and you'll notice the similarities to GoldenEye can't just be coincidence.

ARMA 3 is where it's at!

After playing the Halo 5 beta, I've decided to leave most of the twitch-shooter's multiplayer (Though Halo is one of my favorite series so I'll see how long itll take me to go back after beating 5's campaign) I've been doing a lot of ARMA 3, CSGO, and though its not competitive (which makes it even better) PAYDAY 2.

I think personally the FPS (and 3rd person shooters) genre has been too associated with CoD, Quake, and all those fast paced shooters. I've gathered that the world seems to think if you get to use a gun, the game cant possibly have a story, or good gameplay, and that is simply not true. It takes the same amount of skill as a RPG such as Dragon Age, or a JRPG. I'd like people who make this claim to go play the Metro series, or Spec-Ops: The Line and say they lack gameplay and story.

Another thing I think it comes down to is the, honestly ignorant, public understanding that guns are scary. By association the games which feature them make people uncomfortable as well. This though is a conversation for another place so I wont start it here.

A game I very much recommend to people in this genre is Black Mesa Source. If you've played half life, time for a impossibly enhanced replay. If you haven't, shame on you, theres no better way to experience the game that has repeatedly won best game ever. Only problem is they havent finished the Xen chapters of the game yet.

I like shooters when they have a good purpose or good premise. Bland shooters I avoid. Right now I'm playing PayDay 2 and it's fairly generic in its shooting, but the other elements make it a lot better.

Yeah, I'm a guy who's into shooters nowadays.

My personal favorites would have to be the Halo, Battlefield, and Mass Effect series in general, House of the Dead Overkill, and Bioshock Infinite to name a few games. Right now I've been hooked on Far Cry 3 as far as shooters go and honestly, I'm surprised that I didn't pick up this little gem sooner. I was pretty good in Borderlands 2 a few years back but it got too frustrating for me eventually. Also beat CoD Ghosts on Veteran recently and unless it's a round of zombies, I don't think that I'll be playing another CoD game anytime soon seeing how I beat most of the CoD games on Veteran already. At least I can now focus on Dead Space's Impossible mode when I'm not busy on Far Cry 3.

I don't mind shooters, but I certainly don't go out looking for them. Not my favorite genre, especially since I'm usually not all that good at them. :P

Then again, only shooter I've played lately is Borderlands 2 (and even then that was only after people said how good it was and after I saw it on sale). Half the time I can't aim straight for the life of me. I can't imagine playing against other players, I'd probably be one of the ones who ragequit ah ha.

Am I the only one who gets extremely nauseous playing Borderlands 2? @.@ Not sure if I'm used to subdued colour schemes in regular shooters or something, but the vibrant colour scheme and different art style throws me off a bit. Then again, I've never considered myself adept at shooters so I'm in the same boat where I don't go out of my way looking. I pick up games that have my interest.

i love shooters(: my favorite shooting games are bioshock and uncharted.

BioShock Infinite was the game that kind of pushed me into shooters. Great game, though those Handymen were obnoxiously annoying to defeat...Loathed them with every inch of my being.

Isn't that the whole point of shooters?

Perhaps, but there are those like BioShock Infinite, Uncharted and The Last of Us that have equal, if not better, quality campaign modes.

Isn't Infinite the most crappy one of Bioshocks?

I actually haven't played the previous ones simply because they kind of creeped me out...I made the decision to get Infinite mainly because the difference in colour scheme and the graphics looked fantastic. Not a bad decision and it's one of the very few games I would actually consider replaying. But I have heard good things about the first 2 in the series. I'll eventually get around to them.
