After hearing what Pokemon Generations did with only showing the games' male protagonists and leaving the females out, it seems likely that Pokemon anime writers (granted I know Generations had a different team but it can apply to the main anime as well) are biased when it comes to treatment of female characters.
If you pay attention to every female main game protagonist who appeared in the anime (main examples being May, Dawn and Serena) they were all shoved into doing a role that was girly by default (aka Contests and Showcases) which unfortunately made them into frilly, girly-girl stereotypes.
The writers also have huge preference to only putting Ash's strength on par with male characters, which explains why pretty much every rival he's had has been male. Bianca was also unfortunately subject to the girly-girl curse, which is why she's ditzy and never managed to battle Ash a lot.
In fact, if you look at all the notable Gym-challenging characters, they are male-dominated. The only female who I recall was even collecting Gym badges was Lyra, who weirdly was the only female game protagonist not to fall to the girly-girl female character curse.
So basically, if you're a female character from the games, expect yourself to be butchered heavily in the anime and essentially denied from doing any major quests like the Gyms.
