Suggestion:Posting limits

We need stricter posting Limits, people seem to join the site and either spam or just respond to a bunch of posts and necro threads just to get their post count up I think. Stuff like this gets pretty annoying to me because it is not "constructive" commenting it is simply spam.

Anyways my suggestion is to limit how many posts they can make in under a 10 minute time period or something stricter. 3,5,10 minutes....just SOMETHING that prevents them from commenting on over 10 threads in under a couple of minutes.

Normally we don't have adbots signing up and mass spamming sections with threads like that (in fact, probably hasn't happened on this scale in years), but certainly it's something we'll need to consider if it continues.

But they're not trying to get their postcount up, they're just programs signed up to the forums to advertise whatever they want.

Hey, if this problem concerns me, by the fact that I'm new, and may have inadvertently necro'd a few threads, then I think I should be man enough to apologize for it. So yeah, I apologize if I've necro'd a thread or two since I joined; I admittedly should know better. But I'm no bot, and I'd like to stay on the forum in one piece here. And in no way am I doing it to get my postcount up, I can reassure you; I can do that pretty fine in active threads.

tl;dr, I'm sorry if I personally necro'd some threads, I'm not doing it to boost my postcount, and I'll try my hardest to avoid doing so from now on.

YellowTemperance, I feel it's safe to say that Nyro was referring to other members. You may not see it now, but this and other sections were just flooded with spam threads by spambot accounts until I and other mods went and deleted them all. (About 15-20 in this section alone?)

New people trying to be active and spam bots or spammers who just want to post random junk are way different from eachother. I think new people should post more when they first join simply as a "I'm Here" statement on their intended activity. But these spam bots got to go.

If you are referring to what happened in CQ&F earlier this morning, I can tell you that it has been quite some time since we had a spam bot come into the boards and spam up a storm like that. Every forum gets spam bots, and even if we tried our best to prevent them from happening, the people that continue to develop them look for flaws in forum software restrictions to let them in.

Overall, I'd have to disagree with your idea to prevent users from posting in intervals that long. Maybe the administrators could code it in where members with under 15 posts have longer waiting intervals, but 3-5, and even 10 minutes is extreme. Posting is what keeps a forum active, and having such restrictions will drive members away, and also reduce activity on the forum.

It was what I was talking about, from my experience once they do it then it is guaranteed they will try again. You are right though the time limit for posts is a bit extreme on my part. What about the certain amount of time between starting a new topic for individuals?

That's what an IP ban is for, to prevent users from a specific source from making duplicate accounts and trying to do it again. What happened today was actually pretty rare, at least in my time here.

A timer on post? This could hurt the forum games a bit, for those who just camp those sections :P

How about the DCC? they have tons of people who takes the DCC as a chat room lmao.

I'd say no on a timer for post. But a timer on making threads? I don't mind. I'm pretty sure there's no one that makes threads as fast as they posts.

I'm going to more or less echo earlier posts by saying a timer on posts is a bad idea, especially for my section, where threads can then into chat rooms basically. Just my two cents.

In addition to what everyone else has already said, aren't users who have not yet confirmed their e-mail address unable to post on any forums aside from the the ones under the "Official Forum" category? Perhaps that limitation could be reinforced as well, though I think that would be going too far.

I like the idea of intervals between posting threads, but I think intervals within making posts should generally be avoided.
