As someone who is at least semi-regular I've gotta say it's mostly a pretty nice place. Random battling is pretty much a blast even if you hate competitive battling, don't give a hoot about teambuilding, or feel like tiers take the soul out of pokemon. No matter what your reasoning is; there's enough to do there. If you do enjoy competitive; you can battle any tier you like and many of us like to nerd out over teams and just talk about pokemon in general on some occasions.
I do understand that it can seem daunting. Like with any Pokecommunity chat; the topic oftentimes zags, zigs and weaves into some positively....strange territory sometimes. Don't let that spook ya, just wait a few moments and it'll change again. If something bugs you that much the mods are usually pretty willing to help change the mood or distract from the topic even if they don't use power. We also have some differing rooms; so you can join in with like minded folks and avoid the main rooms if they're not your style; so shyness shouldn't hold you back either!
The few dark elements can be lit up and compensated for rather handily if you stick around and want to give it a try. Most of us won't bite; though some of them can be kind of um...unique.
