tbh my dutch friends speaking english on Discord don't sound like they have much of an accent at all. Or maybe it's just so similar to my own that I don't react to it.

Apparently it's the Scottish accent I heard (this actor from my favourite TV series was born in Glasgow). Here's another video I watched for reference ^^
I like that they pronounce "r" like in Spanish ^^

What's strange to me, is that I don't make the difference between most American speakers. I would assume that such a big country would have a flourishing list of accents but it's not what I seem to hear ^^"

That video was fun! Also really sad :(

In Glasgow though, he would sound quite posh, and he was very easy to understand. It can be a pretty hard accent to understand in the real world, even for other Scots sometimes.

Half of my family are Geordie and the other half are old sheep farmers. My partner can't understand either accent particularly well 😅

Let me make my contribution too: Spanish, French and Chinese accents are also terrible XD
If two languages are too different, then the speakers of either language will be terrible at the other :(

I wanna say I barely have an accent. Partly because I never actually indulged in my local accent and partly because I don't speak that much irl. xD
That doesn't count 😂

Half of my family are Geordie and the other half are old sheep farmers. My partner can't understand either accent particularly well 😅
I didn't realise a small country like UK would have so many different accents XD

Which reinforces my question: why can't I hear any difference between people from different parts of North America, including Canada?

239078 english towns have been isolated from one another for years there wasnt always easy paths between them so accents didnt mix and dilute they more divergerd. america is relatively young and cities are well connected, accents would of mixed and blended. still there is nice variation, just not as dense. even im english and can tell a slight difference between canada and US 🙂

I think that's the problem; the only American people I hear are celebrities, athletes, Youtubers, and sometimes fellow researchers XD
I remember watching a video by PewDiePie in which he reacts to an American girl whose accent was terrible, he had trouble understanding her (so did I).

Enough talking of the worst, what's the best?
I like the British accent, it sounds elegant to me :)
