Tbf. it was way better when it was just a Magick ripoff of a slugfest where you just spend ages chipping down the LP of your opponent with Beatdown strategies while they were doing the same.
Like, nowadays you're actually forced to understand archetypes and strategy. Depth in a children's card game! D:

They aren't even love interests (although that wouldn't make it any better). They are just literally useless. Even if they start off strong they'll just become useless background characters while the boys handle all the cool stuff. <_<
Like, even as a side character you can still have important things to do. Not just being a cheerleader!
 
Once watched one Yu Gi Oh GX episode.
A girl loses a duel against a bad guy... and falls to the ground (?). Then she gets back up :
"I have lost but I am alright because I have seen the "Light"!"
(Which must be why she is now smirking with a mean look just like the bad guy)

I stopped watching there. :p

My only exposure to the Yu-Gi-Oh! show was the abridged series on Youtube. I gotta watch the whole lot of them when I get some time, they're a riot.

Seriously though, most side characters in Anime have little if any importance.
The trope of 'only the Main character can do/accomplish anything' is so dang old that it probably witnessed the big bang, and it isn't limited to Anime either.

Also someone said 'Cheerleader' so have a cheerleader Glaceon =D

There are definitely people who believe to be the main character of our world. And a lot of them really do whatever they please with no regards to others. :(

I can't say I liked GX much after the first season. It just got way to weird for my taste. Granted, Yu-Gi-Oh! as a series itself has always been weird. But the first show at least had a goal in mind as to where it's heading. And the first season of GX was mostly just kids hanging out at school dueling each other for fun.
