The Count To Infinity - v12

I've beaten all the classic mega man games 1-11 on switch via the 2 legacy collections, the games are quite hard, but I beat them eventually, the mega man X series is also fun, it's basically Mega man, but with a more mature story, they are also all on switch 1-9, then there's battle network, which is a very unique RPG with an even more unique fighting system, which is also on switch! the only bad thing about the mega man series is that Capcom doesn't care about it, they barely ever release new games which makes me, as a big mega man fan, really sad:sadwick:

I'll shout out @Setsuna for the many fun megaman discussions we've shared.

I have been summoned...

Yeah I absolutely adore Mega Man! I grew up with the classic series and have since finished the X, Zero, and ZX series. The other games are ones I'll play either this year or next year, but it's essentially one of those life-long passions of mine.

If you're looking to get into the series, I'd recommend something like Mega Man 3 as a starting point, I think it's the easiest out of the classics and still offers a lot of what makes the series so good.

@ReKoil The premise of megaman is being able to select any stage in order and taking the boss power to strengthen up megaman. It's a series worth looking at if your into moderately challenging platformers.

This pretty much sums it up. They can be fairly challenging but the idea is whenever you complete a level and beat its boss, you can a new special weapon that another boss is weak to, making every subsequent boss fight easier as long as you know their weakness. As you experiment with different weapons and learn the attack patterns of the bosses you can knock them down like a big domino chain.

If you find the classic games too slow, you could try the Mega Man X games, which include the ability to dash for extra speed, charge up your special weapons to make them more powerful, a bunch of different kinds of upgrades depending on the game, and different playable characters depending on the game. I think they're the ones that typically appeal to the most people, but not all of the games are great. The Zero series is a more difficult extension of those games, and ZX is sort of like a couple extra Zero games.

If you're not into 2d platformers, you might be interested in Battle Network, Starforce, or Legends? They're completely different genres, but still very well loved.

The Legacy Collections are easily the best way to get into the series and I'm so glad they exist. Classic, X, Zero, ZX, and Battle Network all exist on modern consoles in these collections where you can buy several games for the price of one.

It is a big shame how Capcom doesn't really seem to care about it anymore. Classic has gone missing for several years without any new games three separate times. The last new classic game we got was in 2018, and the last one before that was 2010. Mega Man X DiVE is a great love letter for the series but it started out as a mobile gacha game in 2020 (though it's since been released on Steam without the gacha elements) and it's the only thing we've had for the past several years. Capcom is too hooked on Street Fighter and Monster Hunter to acknowledge us.

I love talking about this stuff so I suppose I'll follow this conversation for a little bit.~

There's also mega man legends, which is like a 3D rpg-ish kinda game, sadly it's not on switch though. :(
And there was going to be a third one, but it got cancelled when the main mega man producer stepped down...

Even though the franchise will probably never get any more games, it will still remain My favorite game tied with pokemon! but I will never not hope for a new game, regardless of how long it's been.

I feel the same way about another almost-dead series that I love, Advance Wars. They released a compilation of the first 2 games back in April; but it went through 1.5 years of delays and it doesn't seem to have sold particularly well. Meanwhile, the last original game was released in 2008...

I only first played Advance Wars a little before Reboot Camp came out, one of my roommates was super into it and got me and our other roommates to play Dual Strike and Days of Ruin with them. I enjoyed it but any sort of strategy game like that or Fire Emblem isn't my thing.

I'm surprised it didn't sell well, it seems like lots of people were talking about it when it released, and it seems like a really well-made game.
I heard Days of Ruin was kinda divisive, did the series just kinda slow down because of that?

I've also played a little bit of Mega Man 11. But I just couldn't get into it. There was a time when I spent a lot of time playing platformers. Most of them being Metroidvania type of games. The last one I beat was Symphony of the Night. It actually took me multiple attempts to get into the game, though. ^^"

At this point I think I'm just over the genre. Ironically, I never got into Super Metroi, either. Some people seem to regard it as "the" Metroidvania of all Metroidvanias.

242 728

Never played Advance Wars either.
As for Metroid, the only one I've played is Dread, which was actually a pretty good game, but some of the secrets were a pain in the neck to get to. Like the one where you have chain multiple flash/spark/whatever it was called while moving around just to get to it.
The final boss was a marathon too xD

For MegaMan... it's just never really appealed to me that well tbh. Guess I could try one, but I grew up playing DKC and Mario as platformers. I also have a lot of platformers still lying around needing to be played =P
It's not off the table completely though. I mean I for the first time played a Kirby, Crash Bandicoot and a Metroid game last year. I occasionally experiment =P

When it comes to difficulty I prefer some challenge, but I'm not into stupidly hard and precise stuff. Like I 100%ed Super Mario Sunshine recently and some of those stages were just so hard they weren't enjoyable at all. I'm playing Galaxy atm and it feels like a walk in the park by comparison so far xD

Mega Man 11 is solid but I think it can be too punishing? Checkpoints are very sparse unless you play on Easy and some of the bosses were pretty difficult for me on my first playthrough, even as someone with the entire rest of the series under my belt.

Symphony of the Night!! 🤍
Oh I absolutely totally adore those Metroidvania-style Castlevania games, like SotN and the handheld games. They're some of my favourite games ever!

Super Metroid is great but I think it's a game that's great because of things like repeat playthroughs, stuff you need to already be experienced for. It feels like it was made for someone playing through it the third or fourth time rather than the first. It can be a little too daunting to newcomers because it can be really hard to try and find your way around. Metroid can be guilty of having hidden walls you need to find in order to progress with no way of really being able to tell they were there in the first place. I adore Metroidvanias but I don't think they're the most accessible genre and I honestly just recommend having a guide with you on your first (or even first few) times. I got into the genre by playing Castlevania Aria of Sorrow with a guide and I think it really helped preventing me from feeling discouraged.

Dread is a fantastic game, I felt the same about those shine spark secrets though too. It felt really complicated trying to find out exactly what I was supposed to do to obtain them, but it feels really good once you really nail the movement down. I've done a couple playthroughs and thought it was great both times.

I've heard DKC is another set of tough platformers, though I've only ever played Returns and maybe the first world or two of Tropical Freeze. I think it's really hard for me to weigh in on how difficult Mega Man as a series is, because I'm so used to the classic games and it's not fair for me to say "this game isn't hard!" when I've replayed it so many times over so many years. I'd still continue to recommend it if you enjoyed those games you listed.

How have you been liking Mario Galaxy? I finally got around to finishing all the 3D Mario games last year and I think Galaxy especially is really solid.

I've never really played metroid, I tried it one on nintendo switch online, And I got stuck not knowing what to do within like the first 15 minutes, lol.

242 731

Hoo-boy, time to catch up on the convo lol.

I've played most of the Metroid games at least once, love the Primes, Other M, (a shock, I know) and Fusion. Used to love Zero Mission, but after playing it again sometime in the last 5 years, I really didn't like it much, which is very odd since it used to be my favorite... Really don't like Super Metroid, really don't like the 'official remake' of 2, (one of the only like 2 games I've ever played that I wish I could have refunded) and after the dumpster fire that was M2R (not AM2R, which I've sadly never played) I have no desire to trust those devs with any of my money ever again and therefore will never play Dread. (especially because it looks like something I wouldn't like anyway)

Never played Mega Man either. The only real reason I'd consider trying out the series is if I was crushing on someone who happened to love it. *shrugs*

Don't know anything about Advance Wars either to say much here sadly.

I'm just out here weeping for my Sonic Chronicles 2...

Wow, seems like the section has been more active then usual lately!

I heard Days of Ruin was kinda divisive, did the series just kinda slow down because of that?
It was divisive; but I wouldn't say it's the cause of the series dying. It had kinda just run its course and the games, while not flopping, weren't pushing out good enough numbers for Nintendo.

I'm also playing Galaxy and have really enjoyed it as well; it starts off a bit slow but really got going for me after you unlock the 2nd dome. I also agree with you on the difficulty stuff too. I feel like I enjoy hard games in theory, but get really frustrated and want to quit when I actually try them.

Even though the franchise will probably never get any more games, it will still remain My favorite game tied with pokemon! but I will never not hope for a new game, regardless of how long it's been.
If you want something to play while you wait; Cave Story is a free download and seems to have a similar style of run-and-gun gameplay.

Ehehe, you can at least partially blame me I suppose, I do enjoy talking a lot.
That's disappointing. I've heard people just describe Advance Wars as "Fire Emblem but it's got tanks" so I just figured people who were interested in that genre just switched to Fire Emblem if they didn't agree with Days of Ruin.

I second this! Please go play Cave Story it's a wonderful classic. You can find the original version completely free on the internet and it's not a very long game if you know where you're going. It's got multiple endings, different kinds of weapons for some added replay value, and it's always been incredibly easy to pick up in my opinion, it's not complicated. The music is wonderful, the story is a good time, and it's incredibly impressive being made by only one person. It gets a huge recommendation from me!

I got into the genre by playing Castlevania Aria of Sorrow with a guide and I think it really helped preventing me from feeling discouraged.
My first one was Dawn of Sorrow. I found it in a bargain bin for cheap back when those were still a thing. I really liked the three DS games. I also played Cave Story+ but gave up when I got to the secret dungeon. ^^"

I've only played a little of the first game. But I've seen playthroughs of the others. I also like to watch some AWBW matches on Youtube. It seems like ReBoot Camp was kinda anticipated in the community for a while. But due to Nintendo treating it as "a game that will probably fail" it did exactly that. That was quite sad to see, ngl.

I played the original three DKC's on my GBA as a kid. I loved them, though I do remember having to clear certain hard parts for my sister lol
They definitely had hard sections, but those were mostly only way harder when going for optional stuff like the KONG letters.
I did buy Tropical Freeze, but it's still in my unplayed games pile =P

Galaxy has been nice and chill for the most part. One downside is that I'm on a Lite and... this game definitely has some... unoptimal/wonky controls when playing it on a Lite tbh.
The gyro related stuff is doable, but kind of finicky so I'm not very fond of those levels.
So far there's only 1 level that I actively dislike: the race against the boo in that Ghost mansion galaxy. Those pull stars are a hassle to use properly on a Lite and you have to race the boo with them... I lost a lot of lives there xD

Anyway the game itself so far is good and very enjoyable. My complaints pretty much all stem from me playing it on a Switch Lite, and although playable, it definitely leaves a lot of things to be desired when playing it on a Lite.

I'm playing on Wii, and while the motion controls work >99% of the time. That last 1% when you flick the Wiimote and it doesn't register your spin always seem to happen at the worst possible times. I also had a lot of trouble racing against the ghost lol. It's timing is really strict for an early game star.

Can confirm; I was on the subreddit and the atmosphere before release was absolutely electric. People were making maps for every day leading up to launch, all sorts of rumors were flying around. We had already been waiting for a year due to the delay and hadn't gotten a new game since the 00s; so we were ready for it to come out. Then they released it 2 weeks before Tears of the Kingdom with terrible online.

I'm currently not into any series in particular. Not a lot of exciting stuff coming up, either. So, I've been playing the occasional randomizer. I recently played a FF6 randomizer and I also want to try out a Golden Sun related one. Though, that one seems to be very limited. :(

That's a series that didn't have a new game for a long time. Especially, after the divisive last title...

I love all three of the DS games! Order of Ecclesia took me a little bit to get comfortable with but I've since fallen in love with it too. I played randomizers for Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin and had a fun time with both of those.
Cave Story+ is great if you haven't played the game before, but I think the extra content that CS+ includes over the original isn't worth spending that much money for. I got my copy for free off Epic and it's just so much easier to recommend the original version because it's just as good and it's free.

I've played a couple Castlevanias in the past. It's been quite a while since I last played one though.

Do you remember which ones you played? The series can be pretty different from game to game, the newer ones are absolutely nothing like the old ones.
I never got around to playing the original DKC trilogy but I keep hearing they're super good and considering I like those kinds of games I think I'd love them if I could get into them. Tropical Freeze is tough for me because it's a great game but I just couldn't get into it for whatever reason. Maybe I wasn't interested in playing platformers at the time, but I was just as eager to put it aside as I was to buy it. Since we're talking about difficult platformers I was thinking about Celeste again and wanted to at least bring it up and ask the room if anyone has any opinions on it?

I forgot Galaxy was ever on the Switch honestly, I just still had my copy for the Wii from back then. Are the controls similar to something like Skyward Sword HD, with a button option and motion control option? I can't imagine doing anything with star bits without completely disconnecting my joy-cons from the console and pointing with that like a Wii remote.

Cave story seems interesting, maybe I'll give it a try!

If you end up playing it, let me know what you think! I'd be more than happy to talk about it or lend a hand if you'd be interested!

That's a series that didn't have a new game for a long time. Especially, after the divisive last title...

A randomizer for an RPG like that sounds like it'd be a lot of fun! I've never done something like that (nor have I played FF6) but I recently learned randomizers for FF5 exist and I was thinking if I wanted to go back to that game I'd probably do it through a randomizer.

It's sad how common of an occurrence that seems to be? Having one divisive game seemingly stop an entire series in its tracks. There are definitely so many good games I've never gotten the chance to play because they weren't making new games for them by the time I was growing up and getting into video games.
While it's not really divisive, it's always been solid, the whole issue with not getting a new Mega Man game for years just makes me think of that vicious cycle of "company doesn't make game because it won't make money, and game won't make money because company won't make game". Super Monkey Ball kinda fell into that. It's rough.

Just beat the Toy Galaxy boss and dang do I hate Spring Mario.... 😤
It's just so dang hard to keep in control of it.

Anyway some of the motion control things can be done by pressing Y, but not all of them. Like that Golf ball ride or that surf level. Had to tilt the Lite a bunch of ways.
The Pull stars have to be done by touch screen... which obviously obstructs my vision =P
