I'll shout out
@Setsuna for the many fun megaman discussions we've shared.
I have been summoned...
Yeah I absolutely adore Mega Man! I grew up with the classic series and have since finished the X, Zero, and ZX series. The other games are ones I'll play either this year or next year, but it's essentially one of those life-long passions of mine.
If you're looking to get into the series, I'd recommend something like Mega Man 3 as a starting point, I think it's the easiest out of the classics and still offers a lot of what makes the series so good.
@ReKoil The premise of megaman is being able to select any stage in order and taking the boss power to strengthen up megaman. It's a series worth looking at if your into moderately challenging platformers.
This pretty much sums it up. They can be fairly challenging but the idea is whenever you complete a level and beat its boss, you can a new special weapon that another boss is weak to, making every subsequent boss fight easier as long as you know their weakness. As you experiment with different weapons and learn the attack patterns of the bosses you can knock them down like a big domino chain.
If you find the classic games too slow, you could try the Mega Man X games, which include the ability to dash for extra speed, charge up your special weapons to make them more powerful, a bunch of different kinds of upgrades depending on the game, and different playable characters depending on the game. I think they're the ones that typically appeal to the most people, but not all of the games are great. The Zero series is a more difficult extension of those games, and ZX is sort of like a couple extra Zero games.
If you're not into 2d platformers, you might be interested in Battle Network, Starforce, or Legends? They're completely different genres, but still very well loved.
I've beaten all the classic mega man games 1-11 on switch via the 2 legacy collections, the games are quite hard, but I beat them eventually, the mega man X series is also fun, it's basically Mega man, but with a more mature story, they are also all on switch 1-9, then there's battle network, which is a very unique RPG with an even more unique fighting system, which is also on switch! the only bad thing about the mega man series is that Capcom doesn't care about it, they barely ever release new games which makes me, as a big mega man fan, really sad
The Legacy Collections are easily the best way to get into the series and I'm so glad they exist. Classic, X, Zero, ZX, and Battle Network all exist on modern consoles in these collections where you can buy several games for the price of one.
It
is a big shame how Capcom doesn't really seem to care about it anymore. Classic has gone missing for several years without any new games
three separate times. The last new classic game we got was in 2018, and the last one before that was 2010. Mega Man X DiVE is a great love letter for the series but it started out as a mobile gacha game in 2020 (though it's since been released on Steam without the gacha elements) and it's the only thing we've had for the past several years. Capcom is too hooked on Street Fighter and Monster Hunter to acknowledge us.
I love talking about this stuff so I suppose I'll follow this conversation for a little bit.~
