Okay, let's start with the basics. In the main thread we talked about doing something else for this year's GT.

Detective-like theme where a group of villains takes over the forum and players are tasked with getting the forum back. Basically and ARG. Did I get this right?

So first thing - is everyone on board with this?

And second thing - What about story? Any ideas for it?

On the topic of the whole villains thing, I was thinking that for this one, PC would be taken over by an unknown evil team which would harness the power of a weird relic which houses a dangerous Pokemon), in order to try and destroy it. In order to take down this evil team, everyone participating has to join up with an already-existing evil team, four of which will form the houses that will be taking part, and will join forces to take down this unknown threat. I was thinking Rocket, Galactic, Plasma and Aether for the names of the houses, and through events we gain points as usual. However in a twist, what I was thinking was that gaining enough points will allow them to be banked for other activities/gains (however the overall points of the houses will remain the same, each member has a "total points" and "current points" tally) such as being able to deal damage to this Pokemon during a climactic battle at the end of the GT which everyone is encouraged to take part in (somewhat similar to gimmiepie's idea). Meanwhile, Looker is in the background, dropping hints about the mysterious entity in the relic, before revealing its true identity.

What do you think?

I don't think narrative-wise that really works. RR shows that the evil teams can work together but it'd be weird for them to work together in a protagonist capacity. Plus, it sounds like you want to make it very complex and I don't think that's the best move. If we want the GT to run without a hitch, even with us doing such a different take on it, I think it'd be better if things were mechanically simple to make for efficient and smooth running of everything.

So what I'm gathering from this thread and the other preceding threads so far is:

Detective theme - users participate in events which gives points, every x points will release a clue?
Evil Team - I'm seeing a mix between Team Rocket and Team Magma/Aqua

Part of me would like to start off with teams and then everyone has to band together to take down the villain who released the Pokemon from the relic. Participating in events will take down health. I have more ideas but I have to run off. I'll edit more in later.

The Detective idea sounds cute, but I'm also good with the Evil Team idea. What other ideas did you have, btw?

Detective Pikachu brought in a lot of excitement to the fandom this year, myself included, so I'm especially interested in a detective theme. We can break people into teams again and have them complete events to unravel clues/mysteries. 👍 idk details yet but that's my preference from a quick thought. Cute chance to involve and get the members interested by polling them on what four detective Pokémon teams they'd like to see! And the four with the most votes will be the teams for this year's GT. So we can end up with Detective Pikachu team, Detective Eevee team, Detective Psyduck team, and Detective Snubbull team, for instance?

!!! DETECTIVE PSYDUCK TEAM !!!

I'm not too keen on doing teams. It has been one of the main criticisms of the past few GTs. I do think that's such a cute idea though! I haven't seen Detective Pikachu so I wouldn't know the plot rip.

Detective Team Eevee tho!!

I love the detective theme! Haven't seen Detective Pikachu yet myself, but this idea ties in nicely with the film's release. :D

Janna's suggestion is super cute, however, I think teams didn't work that well for Get-Togethers in the past. For example, last time, there was a noticeable lack in participation from team Tapu Bulu compared to others, and I felt that it wasn't really fair on the more invested team members. You know?

Maybe two teams will work better? :)

Detective theme is winning by too much, so I suppose we'll be well suited to trying to think of ideas for that then. I presume if we go detective it would be detective pikachu, specifically?

So what teams do we want/how would we fit it into DP? Above we have some thoughts on two teams only... and we also need to come up with the villain/plot to go with it.

Maybe two specific characters from the film universe - but we'd have to ensure it's not too 'deep' into the movie to maybe confuse members who haven't seen it.

Seeing the nice CSS draft gives me the idea of two teams being Detective Pikachu... and Detective Eevee. Call it a mash-up of DT and LGPE?

We hadn't wanted TR to be the 'big bad' in the mystery, but I reckon it'd be good to use them at first as part of the misdirection, or twist. Team Rocket members doing 'something' bad, turns out someone else is controlling them, or they're say ditto working for a greater evil.

I'm still leaning to no teams, but this made me want Detective Eevee somewhere.

Do you feel like there is a need to create new thread for story discussion or we can do it here?

Few points to discuss that I can think of now (in no particular order):
  1. Teams or no teams?
  2. Basic skeleton of the story - what is the mystery that users have to figure out, what is the twist in this mystery, who is on users side, who is against them, ...
  3. How will users get clues to figure out the mystery?
  4. How much will GT be centered around this story?

1. Teams imo, but not a strong preference. If we don't do teams, then treat points or whatnot as a group effort by everyone.
2. TBD. :V I've offered a basis above, will think more on this tomorrow. Twist is that TR is not involved/someone or something else is manipulating them, or at least one of them.
3. Have points associated with each event. When a team/both team reaches a point total, that activates a clue or progression in the story.
4. I'd say have every event count as contribution to the story, but otherwise if a member doesn't care there is nothing stopping them just doing the events they want for their own enjoyment/personal glory. This also means limited unlocked-by-plot-progression events.

I said this before, but I think the more elements you add to the story here the worse this is going to be. Don't add multiple teams, don't add a bunch of different twists and turns. Have a singular mystery, a singular antagonist and have everyone together working towards solving that mystery using the point system Marcin suggested.

This is the first time we've attempted something like this, that in and of itself means it could easily go wrong. Add in to that the fact that every additional element we add is something that can go wrong? Keep it simple and if it goes well then we can attempt something a bit more complex for the next one. Better to ensure that this goes well than to create a super complex narrative with a bunch of complicated mechanics.
