After Nintendo elected to give us a Nintendo Switch with a Playstation Vita screen to look forward to, Valve has announced the Steam Deck, a portable PC in a Switch-style casing shipping from December 2021!

Website with full spec details etc is here.

Any thoughts on this? Would you be interested in buying one? Do you think it will it be able to compete with the Nintendo Switch?

Do you have any interest in it Dawn?
Honestly, this is the most exciting news for me this year thus far. I've already put in a reservation for a 256GB model and I'm really looking forward to it. I was debating a 512GB model but as the internal memory is apparently the only difference between the three models and they have micro SD compatibility, I decided to save myself £100ish and just buy an SD card if I need more space.

Steam has always been a frustrating thing for me, because I'm really not into PC gaming - I just don't find it comfortable. But the Steam sales are always so tempting, and there are a lot of games only available on Steam that I want to play. I've always preferred handheld gaming to everything else, so having Steam on a handheld device is a dream come true for me. Since it's basically a handheld PC that also means customisation, which means emulation. If Nintendo don't want to put their classics on the Switch, I'll just put them on the Steam Deck, and there are plenty of old Playstation games I'd love to revisit or experience for the first time as well. You could also put PS Now and Game Pass on this thing, which is amazing. It means I might also finally be motivated to start playing FFXIV again, since I'll be able to play on a handheld screen.

So yeah, I'm very interested and I have high hopes this will turn out to be a good thing.

Oh, so is it a portable version of Steam? I think I want it, tbh. I don't like computer steam, and my friend bought me Tales of Symphonia, so maybe I'll buy this.

It comes with Steam installed, although since it's basically a handheld PC you can put pretty much anything you could put on a computer onto it. If you want to stand a chance of getting one before this time next year I'd recommend putting down a deposit sooner rather than later - the 512GB ones already have a Q3 2022 ETA. They've said they're going to e-mail people with the opportunity to purchase in the order they receive deposits, so sooner is better!

I got mine in about an hour after they went live yesterday - after having my Paypal rejected multiple times thanks to server overload - so I'm hoping I'll get mine before the end of the year...the longer ETA for the 512GB one makes me think most people went for that, so hopefully the queue for the smaller ones aren't quite as long...

My only worry is that the hardware looks kinda… odd? Especially the buttons? Maybe I can adjust?
I am sure I can adjust to it, and today was when I could finally reserve one since I just recently joined Steam.

I'm stoked to get a hold of one now and I wanted one so guess reserving was smart on my part to get one at a decent time next year.

Oh, I thought Valve already moved on after the disaster that is the Steam Controller, but NO.

This sounds like a really good idea my laptop is too bad to ran games and I have always wanted to try out steam due to the sales and stuff

I was going to get it but I have to wait till middle of next year in order to get it I may still get it

I would love to get one of these but can't justify the purchase for probably a few years. I hope it does well enough that they keep up production, though, because this would be great for more casual games or even just doing dailies in ffxiv.

Lately I've become interested. I love the games I have on Steam, but often feel discouraged from playing them because I've grown so comfortable with handheld gaming - this would solve that problem. Doesn't seem like it'll be available in Australia for a while longer though. Looking forward to more in-depth reviews!
