Crying.......

    this can be a general "discuss crying" thread, like how often, at what, etc I guess but there was one question that I wanted to pose in particular: do you cry more often at art or your own life?

    for me, it's the former, and I feel weird about it.

    I'D POST A POLL BUT IT IS BEING UNCOOPERATIVE so alas we will have to go sans poll

    I used to cry often as a kid 'cause sensitivity. Nowadays I only really cry when something sad or really happy happens in an anime.

    But that means your life isn't sad, and that's good

    I guess I'm the former as well, assuming 'art' refers to movies, books, etc., and not things like paintings, because those have never made me cry. Emotional stories make me cry. My life hasn't been too sad or emotional lately, so I haven't cried because of real life events in a while.

    excellent point. but sometimes sad things happen and I feel weird for being the only one involved not to cry. but alas. We All Grieve In Different Ways.

    and to clarify, by art I mean books, movies, music, etc.
     
    I haven't cried in some time. I haven't cried at the past four funerals that were members of my immediate family. so it takes a bit for me to find something to cry about. Maybe I'm just narcissistic or nihilistic, hm?
     
    I've definitely noticed tearing up more in the past few years. It's usually when I'm watching a movie, doesn't need to be a sad scene, just emotional. The orchestral music usually sets me off though
     
    As a kid I cried because of, well, someone hurting my feelings or me trying to get attention (as young yound kid). Now, I really only cry if something really, really sad happens, or if I'm extremely mad/frustrated.
     
    I never used to cry very much at anything and now I cry at the drop of a hat for media. I want to claim it's usually in games or books or something I've invested a lot of time into and gotten attached to the characters with, but I cry at movies where I've only known the characters for an hour, too. :( I'm stupidly sensitive to that kind of thing now and I have no idea why. I don't even consider myself a very empathetic person.

    I don't cry much about my own life, though. I go straight to distraction tactics if I'm emotional or stressed out and it helps me forget that I'm upset. I've only cried maybe once or twice in the last year about my life, if that.
     
    Well I cried less than an hour ago after my gf of nearly to years walked out on me without an explanation other than she wanted all my account passwords like facebook and i said no.

    I cry more so at my own life than anything else. I can get quite depressed easy and it just makes me end up crying.
     
    I don't cry much from life nor do I show it unless it's in front of my parents or best friend. There was an incident at uni which ended with me in tears which was quite rare for me, had my best friend hadn't been there it probably would have turned out worse.

    Also with anime and movies or whatnot, for some reason I can only cry in sports anime which is weird... I've had more ways of crying when it comes to Japanese dramas though haha.
     
    I used to cry quite often about real life stuff as it was the only way I could handle my emotions at the time, but now I'm a lot more stoic when it comes to that, I guess. I wouldn't say I've toughened up, just shown how resilient and numb I can be. I just don't cry at real life stuff anymore as opposed to getting angry, which I swallow most of the time. I'm a private person; I'd rather deal with my emotions internally.

    That being said, the heavens open right up whenever I watch something with a remotely sad scene. I cried at the end of Spiderman 2, for Christ's sake. Just today I was watching Desperate Housewives and Lynette found out she was cancer-free but she had ended up killing the real world metaphor for her cancer (a possum) and we both started sobbing :( I get too involved in the lives of white 40-somethings.
    It doesn't take much at all for me to get worked up in regards to visual media, lol. If I even think a kid is in danger I'll get tears in my eyes, let alone the waterworks that happen if a kid gets hurt.

    I suppose there's a healthy disconnect between me crying at real life stuff and me crying at movies and whatever. I save the tears for a medium that can't hurt me, as opposed to the hurt of real life matters.
     
    I feel it's pretty close between the two choices. Many times, I'll be reading a book or watching an anime and find myself overcome with emotion, to the point of crying. However, I'm also dealing with several difficult things at this point in my life; many of which have also led me to crying.

    In fact, yesterday I found myself crying a lot; I guess fights with your boyfriend's friend would do that to you. Seeing as that was a life 'problem', I voted Life in the poll. However, I feel that at times, it really could go either way.
     
    When I was a bit younger, I used to cry only when it involved emotional distress. Surprisingly I never cry when in pain. However, even with all the negative things surrounding my life right now that should've made me cry, I never found myself crying anymore, possibly due to a change in personality only just recently (like a week ago or so). I don't seem to be quite happy or lively either.
     
    Both. I don't think I've ever cried at literal are (like paintings and whatnot), but I've cried at words and movies, which I'd consider artwork as well. More often, though, it's personal material that springs tears. Not necessarily sad stuff, considering I've teared up at very happy things lately, but it's always been a little more personal. I cry a lot, considering when I was younger, it was the only way I knew to express my emotions.
     
    I've cried more at life but that's because I don't think art has ever made me cry. I'm not a big crying kinda guy in general anyway, that said. Dunno why since I know there are times where I absolutely should have been but hey ho, no big deal I guess.
